When you think of the arche-

type of a Renaissance man, you

might be tempted to think of

the Italian artist, scientist and

mathematician, Leonardo Da

Vinci. We at Art in Giving prefer

to think of the debonair, Vene-

zuelan born, modern-day Ren-

aissance man, Raphaël Jaimes-

Branger, one of Art in Giving‟s

talented participating artists.

Based at the SOWA studios,

Raphaël is a gifted artist, TV co-

host of the show “Naked Art”,

faculty member of the Massa-

chusetts College of Art, and one

-time economist. In France, he

attended L‟école Nationale

Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in

Paris, where he received his

masters in Fine Arts and L‟école

des Beaux-Arts de Versailles for

printing. Raphaël‟s earlier

works were oil on canvas. In

recent years he has gravitated

to silver leaf on wood which

uses acid instead of paint.

His artwork is breathtaking.

When asked about the source

of his ideas, Raphaël explained

“Art does not occur by random -

it is 90% perspiration and 10%

inspiration.” In fact, his most

recent show at the Boston De-

sign Center relied on mathe-

matical formulas in the form

of fractals. The term

“fractal”, coined by Benoit

Mandelbrot, is a self similar

geometric shape that can be

divided into parts – with each

part in essence a replica of

the greater whole (think of

seashells, broccoli or cauli-

flower).

son Avenue, Boston, Massa-

chusetts or if you will be in
