cards of cthulhu

Transcript of art book

  • I must warn you about a threat to our world.

Long before mankind roamed this earth, there lived great andterrible beings. Even a single of these ancient beasts held thepower to enslave, or even destroy, the world. When they entereda state of hibernation, humanity was allowed to prosper.

Even now, however, their power infects mankind.

Weak-minded men have fallen under their control and formedCults dedicated to each Elder Gods revival.

You must prevent them from succeeding or the world will be lost.

    - Walter P Matherson

This book showcases the art of Cloud Quinot.

We were very excited when we found out Cloud would be able tocreate the art for The Cards of Cthulhu. We have worked withhim on several other games and it is always a pleasure to workwith someone with so much talent and enthusiasm.

Next to each painting are Clouds thoughts and inspirationspertaining to that specific piece, as well as some of thetechniques and tools he used to create them.

  • This particular work is a infusion of 3d and2d art. The statue was first created inZbrush, then I transferred it to Photoshopto add textures, colors and all its finaltouches. I am fond of experimenting so thephysical characteristics of this statue wereall made from scratch.

In the Philippines, one of the many trees growing inour land is the Narra Tree. It is known to be asturdy tree and it is most commonly used for

furnitures such as tables, chairs, cabinets, etc. Idecided to make this dagger a wooden one

because I would like to introduce a differentapproach when it comes to designing weapons. I

believe it's not only metal that we can use forprotection but other natural resources as well.

The elder sign is situated on the gates ofthis "Hell". It greets visitors and

passersby with a warning that it isn'tthat pretty on the other side.

  • I was practicing proportionsand poses when I wascreating Xiurhn. I likedetailing as well so I wantedmy creature to be enormous.

This sword is only for someone who ismighty and perfect. It can't be lifted or

removed from the ground unless the mostfit individual who possesses the right

attitude and skills comes along. The imagewas created using Photoshop tools such asbrush and lasso. I only played around with

the color and textures to finish it.

I'm a frustrated artist when it comes toillustrating the human anatomy. So what Ido is I apply the basics that I know in thehuman body and eventually transform it toa whole different creature. I really loveexperimenting with the form and texturesand colors. That's why I'm more comfortabledrawing these kind of images.

  • They are hungry and they will huntyou. They don't stop until they getwhat they want.

Deep down below the quietsea these creatures live, die,

reproduce, and hunt. Theyare disturbed though, so

they're risking to come outof their comfort zone andfind who/whatever woke

    them from sleep.

The leader of all leaders. Heis dark, mysterious, stern and

knows too well how to lead hisown people.

  • Fire symbolizes power and passion andthat's what are seen spitted out from themouths of these creatures. They arefierce and will make sure their enemiesare all burned to the ground.

    This unusual floatinggate welcomes

expected or unexpectedguests to the world of

    Yog-Sothoth.

Its face is triangular andthat makes it moredangerous. Sharp andswift, the God will makeyou wish you could justdisappear just from thelooks of it.

  • For this particular composition, I was basicallyplaying around with the textures and how it wouldcomplement the creatures and the environment.

I also practiced some lighting here.

I played with lights again for this piece since Iwas imagining then that the feel of the imagewould be dark, with only minimal light inside

the room. I think it was perfect to what washappening in the illustration.

Since I badly want to be better inillustrating humans, I created thispiece without reference. Thankfully, the outcome is close to what a manactually looks like.

Just like some of my works, theintricate patterns were created in thesoftware, Alchemy then I transferred

to Photoshop to create and finish thewhole composition.

  • I got the inspirationof the Arwassa fromone of the sevendeadly sins, which isGluttony. This is acreature too lazy tomove and doesnothing but eateverything.

I really have the most randomstuff my mind imagines andthis piece is one of them. I

honestly can't remember whyI drew this thing but I'm glad

its outcome is as it is.

This gigantic serpent wasdisturbed from its sleep, hencethe presence of the dynamicpose and expression. This wasalso a time for me toexperiment on the lighting inmy illustration.

  • Prison Break! A wild andenormous beast that triesto free himself, was whatI had in mind during the

production of thisparticular work. I see him as the most

feared, strongest, and wisest creature in its world.

I am not really familiar when it comesto illustrating faces or even the

human body. I only tried my best tocome up with the face of a woman

that would fit to the role of a thief.

I once dreamed of becoming a soldier. It brings such honor to be out there onthe battlefield in order to save thecountry. I focused more in detailingthe soldier so the background wascreated in a more plain style.

  • I started using the softwareAlchemy to create the object'ssilhouette, then I transferred it toPhotoshop to add its details.

    Inspired by the master,Kekai Kotaki.

I wanted to break the usual image of ascroll that is commonly placed/foundinside a room or on top of a table. I

thought of something that would stillrepresent an old era so I brought thescroll outside and placed it on top of

    a concrete pillar.

  • I usually start doodlingrandom figures and if Isee something from theabstract image I wasable to create thenthat's where I startimagining a certaincreature. The humanmind is very creativeand wise and that's

what I'm really thankful for.Without the expression of all the things we

can think of, I'm pretty sure this wouldn't exist.

Like the rest, this piece was created merelyfrom imagination. As much as I wanted to

have a reference for the face, I honestlycan't copy from an original. I alwayssettle for just thinking about it while

    creating the whole process.

The cultist can be your friend, yourenemy, your neighbor or your boss.He has a modern take on fashionmaking him look like he fits in withthe crowd. But whenmidnight comes, he turnsinto this monster and goesto a gathering of peoplebelieving in eerie things.

  • This image was one of my favorites.Aside from the lighting, I alsoexperimented by tilting theperspective to make it a bit moredynamic. And with the use ofcustom brushes, I added details inless time.

This one is considered asspeed paint. I used big brush

strokes, and had funduplicating those dark

minions :) This took meabout 30 minutes.

These flying creatures wereinspired by a game Idownloaded. This is also myown interpretation of fire flieswherein they have their own"lamps" attached to theirbodies in order to see the path.I'm fascinated with these kindsof insects because they'rereally unique.

  • I basically used the lasso tool tocreate the elements in thiscomposition. I also playedaround with the angle of the shotso it would display somedynamism.

Inspired by the awesome artof Resident Evil, this creature

came to existence. I wantedit to be a little exaggerated,

so I drew a number oftentacles. I wanted it to

look massive. That's why Idrew the people so small

    compared to it.

This piece is just a part of mypractice/daily sketch. I didn't

really put much thoughtwhen I created this because

I only wanted to improve mytexturing skills.

  • I experimented with the anatomy of thiscreature so it would look odd but stillhave a more human side. I also playedaround with the textures and colors ofthe composition.

I have this thing called "moodpainting" wherein I start paintingwhenever I'm in whatever mood I'min. This piece is inspired by Clash ofthe Titans. I wanted to try creatingmy own creature.

Jerad Maratz is one of myidols in concept art andevery time I browse his

works, I can't help but getinspired. This piece is one

of them. Im trying my bestto be better in designing creatures.

  • I'm actually quite happy with the resultof this piece because I'm really not intodrawing the human anatomy. It cameout normal as if this is not myweakness. Maybe its because I spentmore time creating this, compared tomy speed paintings.

I wanted this priest to be a littledifferent in terms of its facial features,

compared to those priests that lookmore approachable.

To be successful in my field, I must pushmyself to my limitations and try as hard

as I can to achieve more of what Ioriginally planned. I spent more time

actually on this work since I wanted it tolook as realistic as possible.

  • This young lady journalist hides behind herlong blonde locks and sometimes her beanie. She's shy but she knows where the news is. Imade her look like this since I was aiming forbreaking the normal look of my creatures.

Another play with the texturespiece. I really wanted to createsomething that looks realisticbut at the same time still lookslike it's painted.

This old man knows how to fool peoplebecause he's been a magician ever since hewas young. He may forget names or places

but he never forgets his magic tricks.

  • This piece was a practice in colorcombinations. I usually go for dark, neutral orwarm tones, so I decided to use cool colors. Ididn't make it red except for the inner glowthat shines through the details.

This red potion is inside a beautiful bottleso it can fool people to drink it. It looks

appetizing since it resembles a tastywine. I made the design of the bottle

appeal to women because they are themain victims of this potion.

I spent more time rendering thisone because I really wanted to

improve in this kind of art.

  • This was created actually for a demo tomy classmates when I was in school. They asked me to create a characterfrom scratch and this is what I came upwith. Who would've guessed this piecewould be included in a cool game? :D

I honestly enjoyed doing thispiece. Not only because it'sfor the cover but I'm a fan ofthis kind of creature. I loveexperimenting with it andeven though I'm given adescription of the character, Istill want to add my owninterpretation to it.

This piece is inspired byCarnage, Spiderman's enemy.

Although I wanted it to be morescary, wild and disgusting.

That's why I added anexaggeration to its features.
