ABSTRACT FLORALS with Katie Goldberg This 4-week session will use a floral focal point to practice painting, drawing, and mixed media skills. Students will learn to understand what they see as shapes and values, to overcome fear of the blank canvas, to silence their inner critic, and to paint intuitively. The instructor will supply class materials.

BLACK & WHITE DRAWING: Pencil, Charcoal & Ink with Dr. Quincy Egginton Each class will introduce a media--graphite, charcoal, pen and ink. Techniques will include drawing contour line, building value, cross-hatching and ink washes. Demonstrations will present methods to explore. This step-by-step class is ideal for beginners and experienced students who want to refine their drawing skills. Basic materials will be provided but students are asked to bring a sketchbook 12”x15” or larger.

BEADWEAVING with Dana Stein-Dince Learn to weave with beads and crystals using stitches such as peyote, right-angle weave, and brick stitch. Each week will feature a different technique that can be used to create jewelry that will look as intricate as it is beautiful. All levels welcome.

DRAWING IN COLOR with Dr. Quincy Egginton Explore drawing techniques in color using a variety of art media--colored pencil, oil pastel, chalk pastel and watercolor. Study of the color wheel and demonstrations of techniques will guide students to experience the unique qualities of each media. The challenges of rendering value with color will be explored through the various media. This course will add to your drawing skill and creative expression with color. Basic materials will be provided but students are asked to bring a sketchbook 12”x15” or larger.

HOW TO READ AND INTERPRET A WORK OF ART with Suzanne Altman In this class, you will learn many different ways of looking at art and gain a deeper understanding of how to interpret artwork. We will examine artist’s choice of subject matter, media, size and proportion, as well as their use of point of view, perspective, and symbolism to convey the meanings in their work. Using simple criteria, students will learn to identify various eras and schools of art.

THOMAS COLE AND THE ART OF THE HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL with Suzanne AltmanCoinciding with an exhibit at the Met, this class will discuss Thomas Cole, the founder of the first American art movement. Discussion of his influences from European painters such as Constable and Turner, some of his most important works such as The Course of Empire, and his subsequent influence on other 19th-century artists such as Frederick Church and Asher Durand.

WATERCOLOR PAINTING with Dr. Quincy Egginton Explore the luminous and fluid watercolor medium. Transparency and overlays produce subtle variations of tone and color. COOKING UP COMMUNITY: A culinary exploration of cuisines thatreflect our culture with Giovanni Chef D’Amour GreenBreak Bread not Hearts was founded in 2012 with one philosophy: “Cooking UP Community--Understanding the impact of knowing where our food comes from and striving to support local and regional farmers and producers.” Giovanni Chef D’Amour Green will guide the palate on a culinary journey with food from around the world. A melting pot of cuisines from the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Latin America, Asia and the United States will be showcased. The underlying theme throughout this six-part series is that food is a common denominator that connects us.

1. CARIBBEAN Savory, sweet, and heat come together to form the complexity of Jamaican style curry dishes. Students will prepare their own curry spice blend, which will be used to cook curried chicken and curried vegetables.

ENTHUSIAST PHOTOGRAPHY: The Hudson River Landscape with Adam BrownThe Hudson Valley provides amazing opportunities for landscape photography. Beyond general photography, this class will explore technical and compositional skills in relation to landscape photography. The first class will address compositional techniques for landscapes, use of tripods, and night photography, as well as some discussion of post-processing techniques for maximizing landscape photography. The second class will be conducted on location, at a site to be determined. The third and final class will be an opportunity to review our photographs including further post-processing. Students should have familiarity with the functionality of their camera and manual controls. DANIEL BLAKE, a saxophonist, composer and educator, has developed a wide-ranging career as a contemporary composer and performer. Daniel holds a Ph.D. in composition from the City University of New York and is currently on faculty at The New School and Brooklyn College.

ADAM BROWN spent many years as an enthusiast and hobbyist photographer before becoming a part-time professional. ROBERT CHUCKROW, whose Ph.D. is in experimental physics, has studied T’ai Chi, Ch’i Kung, and other movement, self-development, and healing arts since 1970. He is a certified master teacher of Kinetic Awareness® and has taught T’ai Chi extensively. A multi-award-winning author, he has written five books, three on T’ai Chi and one on diet. DR. ABBY EGGINTON is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor practicing in Pleasantville, NY and Ridgefield, CT. She earned her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. His objective is to demystify fly fishing and give beginners and novices the information and training they need to get on the water, enjoy fly fishing, and catch fish.

MARC SKY has been teaching his classes and workshops in adult education schools throughout New Jersey and New York for the past twenty years. He is a psychology graduate from Rutgers University and a hypnotherapist.
