BIRD SEED PAINTING Spread glue on paper and let kids sprinkle birdseed on it to make pictures.

PAPER PLATE OWLS

Materials: 3 paper plates, orange construction paper, Scissors, Glue (or a stapler), Wiggle eyes, Crayons, paint or markers

1. Cut a notch from 1 plate to form ears. 2. Add Wiggle eyes and construction paper beak. 3. Glue or staple head to body. 4. Cut 1 plate in half for wings. Add construction paper feet.

PAPER BAG TURKEYS For each bird you will need 2 large-size brown bags, a medium-size brown bag, newspaper, glue, wiggle eyes, a red balloon, and a large rubber band. To make the head, stuff the bottom of the medium-size bag with balled-up newspaper. Twist the top of the bag to form a long, skinny neck. Glue the eyes and the balloon wattle onto the face. For the body, use one large bag. Snip a hole through the front of the bag an inch from the bottom and fit the neck into it. Then stuff the body two thirds full of newspaper. Close the top of the bag with the rubber band. To make tail feathers, cut four large half-circles from remaining bag and glue them in layers to back of body.

PAPER PLATE TURKEYS Materials: 1 small paper plate with outer rim cut off 1 large paper plate colored construction paper Paint plates and let dry. Glue small plate to large plate. Add beak, wattle, eye and feet. Cut several colored feathers for tail.

BIRD MASKS

1. Glue two 9" paper plates together 2. Cut two eyeholes and one 2" slit in the plate below the

eyes for the beak. Paint the bottom of the plate. 3. Using different colored foam sheets, cut out two

triangular shaped beaks. 4. One on top of the other, slide through the slit so that

foam sheets stick out to form the beak. 5. Glue feathers above the eyes of the bird to make a

crest. 6. Attach a large craft stick for the handle.

DOVES 1. Trace around child's hand onto white paper with four

fingers together and thumb extended away from fingers. 2. Draw an orange beak on the edge of the thumb and cut

out entire shape. 3. Draw red eye on each side of thumb. 4. Glue glitter on dove for festive look. 5. Attach string to top of dove's body for hanging.

OWLS Materials: 6" Paper Plates

Scissors Black Paint Paintbrushes Glue Small cupcake liners Black or yellow buttons

1. Cut the plate at the bottom and save for later use. 2. Paint paper plate and let dry. 3. Cut three little triangles out of the piece of the plate that was saved. 4. Glue on two triangles for owl's ears and one for his beak. 5. Glue the cupcake liners for the eyes on either side of the beak. 6. Glue buttons inside cupcake liners.

5 BLACK AND SHINY CROWS (to tune of “Five Little Speckled Frogs”) 5 black and shiny crows, Sat on a garden hose, Watching the water sprinkle down, Caw, Caw! 1 jumped into the spray, Where he could play all day Now there are 4 black shiny crows… Repeat.

FEED THE BIRDS (to tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”) Feed, feed, feed the birds In the wintertime When the days are dark and cold Food is hard to find Feed, feed, feed the birds Till the spring has come Scatter birdseed on the snow Feeding birds is fun.

SWANS IN THE PARK (to tune of “Rock-a-bye Baby”) Swans glide across the pond in the park, With feathers so white and beaks that are dark. They spread out their wings and take to the air. The swans fly away, but I don’t know where.

LITTLE BIRD (to tune of “Up On The Housetop”) Most of the birds have gone away On this cold, dark winter's day But here is one bird I can see Looking for something to eat Little bird, I'll feed you Till the cold, winter's through And all your friends come back to play On some bright and warm spring day.

OTHER FUN STUFF

BIRD FEEDERS Spread peanut butter on a pinecone. Roll in birdseed. Attach a string to the top. Hang for birds to eat.

Use Gallon Plastic Jugs or milk cartons to make bird feeders. Bend a pipe cleaner into a “J” shape. String Cheerios or other whole-grain cereal onto pipe cleaner. Hang in tree.

TENNIS BALL CHICK Cut a 2” slit in a yellow tennis ball. (for mouth) Prop the mouth open with a craft stick. Cut 2 triangles of orange felt for beak and glue them to the top and bottom of the slit. When glue is dry, remove craft stick. Glue on wiggle eyes and a few feathers. To make puppet’s mouth move, squeeze the tennis ball on each side of the slit.

FEATHERS Try painting with feathers.

SENSORY TABLE Fill your sensory table with birdseed or feathers.

GIANT NEST Put out a wading pool filled with stuffed birds, bird puppets, books on birds and pillows. Pretend the pool is a bird’s nest.

SNACK

ORANGE-PINEAPPLE OWLS

Place Pineapple ring on Lettuce. Place two orange segments at the top of each ring to resemble feather tufts of great horned owl. Flatten two marshmallows into 1\4" patties. Place on pineapple rings for eyes. Use raisins for pupils. Place an orange segment (so it tucks into the open space below the eyes) on pineapple for a beak.

BIRD NEST COOKIES

Combine in bowl: 3 cups crispy rice cereal 1 cup shredded coconut Bring to boil while stirring: 1/3 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup peanut butter 1 teaspoon vanilla ¼ cup chocolate chips Remove from heat. Stir mixture into cereal/coconut mixture. Let cool and shape into nests. Fill with jelly bean "eggs."

CHUBBY CHICKS

Ingredients: 1 ½ slices white bread mixture of mayonnaise and mustard 2 black olive slices ¼ slice yellow cheese spoonful of shredded mozzarella cheese Cut 1 large circle and 1 small circle from bread. Cut small triangle (beak) and 2 rectangles (feet) from yellow cheese In small bowl, tint mayonnaise with small amount of mustard. Spread large circle with mixture. Top large circle with small circle and spread with mixture. Put 2 olive slices on for eyes. Add triangle beak and rectangle legs. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese for “feathers”

FINGERPLAYS

TWO BIRDS ON A WIRE Two tall telephone poles, (hold up both index fingers) Between them a wire is strung. (form wire by placing thumb tips together) Two little birds hopped on the wire, (lower tips of middle fingers to thumbs) And swung and swung and swung. (with fingers in position, swing hands back & forth)

FIVE BIG CROWS

Five big crows sitting by the door, (hold up five fingers) One flew away, then there were four. (bend down thumb) Four Big crows cawing in the tree One flew away, then there were three (bend down index finger) Three big crows wanting pastures new, One flew away, then there were two. (bend down middle finger) Two big crows having lots of fun, One flew away, then there was one (bend down ring finger) One big crow feeling lonesome for her son, She flew away, then there were none (bend down little finger)

BIRDS (Hold up 5 fingers and fold down 1 at a time.) Five baby robins watch Daddy robin soar. One baby leaves the nest, and now there are four. Four baby robins high up in a tree. One flies down to catch a worm and now there are three. Three baby robins had nothing to do. One tried his new-found wings, and now there are two Two baby robins frolicked in the sun. One robin chased a bug and then there was one One baby robin left all alone This baby robin decided to stay home.

LITTLE ROBIN REDBREAST Little Robin Redbreast (make fist and join thumb and index fingers) Sitting on a rail (rest wrist on edge of other hand) Nibble, nabble goes his head. (Move thumb and index fingers up and down) Wiggle, waggle goes his tail, (tilt wrist over other hand)

TWO LITTLE BLACKBIRDS Two little blackbirds Sitting on a hill (hold up both index fingers) One named Jack (wiggle one) One named Jill (wiggle other) Fly away, Jack, (hide first finger behind back) Fly away Jill (hide second finger behind back) Come back, Jack (return first finger to front.) Come back, Jill (return other finger to front) Alternate verses - Just down the road from Jack and Jill lived two more blackbirds sitting on a pole, one named High and one named Low... Fly away, High Fly away, Low Come back, High Come back, Low And just down the road from high and low lived two more blackbirds sitting on a pole, one named Fast and one named Slow... Just down the road from Fast and Slow lived two more blackbirds sitting on a gate, one named Early and one named Late... (on this one, you can keep you hand hidden to make “Late” late to come out!)

LITTLE BIRD I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop. (rest index and tall fingers on thumb, make bobbing motions) I told the little bird to stop, stop, stop (point each stop with index finger) I went to the window to say, "How do you do?" (extend hand as if to shake hands) He wagged his little tail (rest index and tall fingers on thumb, curl other index finger and attach at back of hand) And away he flew (fly fingers over head and behind back.)

FIVE LITTLE ROBINS 5 little robins sitting in a nest, (hold up 5 fingers) The 1st one said, “I’ve had enough rest.” (point to thumb) The 2nd one said, “Let’s fly from the tree.” (point to index finger) The 3rd one said, “That sounds good to me!” (point to middle finger) The 4th one said, “I’m hungry for some lunch.” (point to ring finger) The 5th one said, “I see worms to munch! (point to pinkie finger) So the 5 little robins all left the nest (wiggle fingers then “fly” away) To go and do what robins do best!

MOTHER HEN’S BABIES 5 eggs and 5 eggs (hold up hands) That makes 10 Sitting on top is the mother hen (fold one hand over other) Crackle, crackle, crackle (clap 3 times) What do I see? (shade eyes) Ten fluffy chicks As yellow as can be! (hold up 10 fingers)

CHICKENS Chook, chook, chook (curtsey) Good morning Mrs. Hen How many chicks have you? Madam, I have 10 (hold up 10 fingers) 4 of them are yellow (hold up fingers on 1 hand) 4 of them are brown (hold up fingers on other hand) 2 of them are speckled (wiggle thumbs) The nicest in the town.

TAP TAP TAP Tap, tap, tap goes the woodpecker, (tap finger on arm) As he pecks a hole in a tree. (form hole with thumb and index finger) He is making a house with a window To peek at you and me! (peek through hole)

EAGLE WANDS 1. Copy and cut one pattern on card stock for each child and let them color. 2. Cut small slit in bottom on dotted line. 3. Fold wings and body on dotted lines. 4. Insert stiff plastic drinking straw into slit and secure with tape. 5. Glue body (not wings!) of eagle together. 6. Hold straw and make an up-and-down motion to make eagle flap its wings.

TURKEY PATTERN

You can use Mr. Turkey for many things in your room. Allow children to color feathers and glue on turkey. Try writing a number on Mr. Turkey’s wing and allowing children to add feathers to match the number.

PAPER PLATE TURKEY PUPPET Materials 2" x 10" strip of corrugated cardboard (from old box) 3 9-inch paper plates 3 6-inch paper plates tempera paint scraps of construction paper in red, orange and yellow 1. Draw eyes on one 6" plate. Staple plate to top of cardboard strip. Add second

cardboard plate behind. Staple plates together. 2. Staple bottom of the cardboard strip between two 9" plates. Then Cut a 6" plate

in half for wings and staple them between the 2 9-inch plates. Staple shoulders. 3. Using brown tempera and 1" piece of sponge, sponge-paint the head, body, and

wings on the front and back. Let dry. 4. Using a variety of colors, sponge-paint another 9" plate on both sides. 5. Make cuts toward center of the plate to create tail feathers. Staple center of tail

to lower half of body back. Bend tail feathers for a 3-D effect. 6. Accordion-fold 1" x 12" strips of orange construction paper and glue feet to ends.

Staple legs to body front. Cut and glue folded beak and wattle to head. Leave body open at the bottom for use as a puppet.

OWL MASK

Lay pattern on fold and cut. Let children color. Punch holes in sides of mask. Tie on string to fit child's face.

CROW PUPPET

1. Put your hand in a black sock, four

fingers up, thumb down. 2. With index finger of other hand,

push sock in until your finger hits the palm of the other hand. Use your thumb in index finger to bring the sides together to form the mouth.

3. Take off sock and secure the mouth with a few stitches.

4. To make upper beak, draw two 4” equilateral triangles on yellow felt. Curve two sides to give appearance of a beak.

5. To make lower beak, make 3” equilateral triangles. 6. Glue along edges of curved edges of beak to form 2 “pockets.” 7. When dry, blue around edges of the beaks’ openings. Put puppet on your hand

and slide the large beak onto the upper part and the smaller beak on the lower part of the mouth. Hold firmly until set

8. Sew or glue on button or felt eyes.

HATCHING BIRD PUPPET 1. Copy, color and cut pattern. 2. Cut a strip of manila tagboard 1" x 9". Fold back 1" on each end. 3. Glue one folded tab to center back of egg top. 4. Glue other tab to back of chick's head. 5. Cup hand around strip and bring egg top down over chick. Open and close

fingers to create flapping motion. Raise top expose chick.

LITTLE RED HEN FINGER PUPPETS Use the patterns on the following page to make finger puppets. Form a tube big enough for your finger and glue a chick to one side and an animal to the other. While you tell the story, place all the animals your fingers facing the children. When you get to the part where the hen calls for her chicks to come and help eat the bread, turn your hand around to reveal the chick side of the puppets.

BEAD CHICKS

Material: 2 round wooden beads (one 16-millimeter and one 25-millimeter bead) with holes large enough for a doubled pipe cleaner to fit through 6-inch pipe cleaners paint feather fine-point marker

1. Paint the beads. When they have dried, bend a 6-inch pipe cleaner in half, sandwiching the end of a tiny craft feather in the fold.

2. Thread the smaller bead onto the opposite end of the pipe cleaner and slide the bead up to hide the bottom of the feather.

3. Thread the larger bead onto the pipe cleaner, then bend the ends of the pipe cleaner into feet.

4. Use a fine-point marker to give your little chick eyes and a tiny beak.
