Course Description

This is a studio art course exploring the medium of digital photography. In this course we will look athow digital photography is connected to previous technologies in photography and explore the

possibilities of the technology available to us. Students will take his/her own “original” images using

scanners, digital cameras and (if desired) film cameras. In this course we will be using Adobe

Photoshop CS2 as a digital darkroom. We will discover options of output/display. We will explore

theory and practice surrounding the photographic image and technology while fulfilling creative

assignments. In this course you are going to pursue your own unique creative projects through close

analysis and exploration of photographic processes formally and conceptually.

This course is followed by Digital Photography 2 (offered in Spring 2008).

Course Objectives:

1. to demonstrate ability to express oneself visually through the medium of digital

photography;

2. to articulate the conceptual basis of one’s work in oral and written form;

3. to develop approaches to creative expression that include risk taking, originality, andproblem solving through digital photography assignments;

4. to identify historical and current issues, themes, and concerns in digital photography.

ExpectationsThis is a multilevel course and each of you will bring varied experiences and skills to the classroom.

All of you should have basic camera operations and experience with black and white photography

(Photo 1). You must have basic computer skills to take this course. Some of you may have a lot of

experience with traditional photography; some of you may have a lot of experience with Photoshop.I expect for each of you to exhibit patience and respect for your professor, classmates, and the work

we view during this course. If we are covering something in class that you already know, you mightbe called upon to help out (with the demonstration). The expectations both in and out of class will

be high. This class will take a considerable amount of time and effort with an emphasis on creativity,concept, and technique. There will be outside reading and research required in order to have

exciting and informed discussions and critiques. Although there may be some time in class forworking on your projects/assignments, the majority of your art making will take place outside of our

scheduled class time. If you do not feel like you are prepared for this course or if you do not have

fundamental computer experience, please speak to me at the break during our first class. I may recommend that you take a basic computer course or workshop before taking this course.

Attendance is mandatory for all classes. If you are unable to attend a class you are required tonotify me before class with an email, phone call, or note (in my mailbox). Class begins at 2pm

sharp. Excessive (2 days or more) tardiness, early dismissal, and any unexcused absences will be

documented and will adversely affect your grade by at least one letter grade (it will be impossible

for you to get an “A” for the semester). (An excused absence is due to illness or emergency.) If you

do not return from a break on time, this will count as a tardy. If you have the equivalence of 3

absences, you will not pass the course. It is REQUIRED for you to come to class prepared (with

completed assignments, textbooks, notebooks, and materials) and on time! Late or incomplete work



will not be accepted (under almost all situations). If I do give you permission to turn in a project latethe highest possible grade a late project can receive is a “C”. Absolutely no late work will be

accepted after one week beyond due date. No late prep notes or written assignments will beaccepted. If you miss a class you must keep up to date on blackboard, get readings from a

classmate, and be prepared for the following class. I take attendance every class and

mark the time you arrive and the time you exit. I can’t emphasize enough how important

punctuality, attendance, and preparation are to your success in this course.

Course Requirements, Critiques, Discussions, and Office HoursHow we use our time in class is crucial! I expect for all of us to use our time as efficiently as

possible. Class will begin at 2pm. We have a lot of technical material to cover, photographs to look

at and images to create! I am excited for our group discussions and critiques and am expecting full

participation in both. During critiques you will learn how to talk constructively about each other’s

work, and your own work as well. I expect nothing short of thoughtful discussions including concept,

references, qualities, and other issues brought up by readings or work. Each student should

participate at least once during a critique (yet if you tend to participate frequently, please resist

dominating the critique or discussion). During workshops, demos, presentations, I expect for

everyone to be awake, focused and respectful. Please show respect and never work on the

computer or talk when someone else is talking. And of course, all cell phones must be turned

off, and no headphones or Bluetooth earpieces should be worn/used during class. If you would like

to meet with me about questions or concerns with your work or the class please make an

appointment to meet with me, or feel free to drop by my office during my office hours.

GradesYour project grades will be posted in the grade book on blackboard. Determining a grade is not

simply an exercise in mathematics but a decision that also takes into account factors such as

performance, ability, effort, creativity, improvement, commitment, enthusiasm and participation.

Students who are curious and care impress me and students who do not take themselves or their

work seriously discourage me. Grades are based on the following: attendance, on time and

successful completion of all assignments, class participation, prep notes and proposals, portfolios,

midterm projects and your term project. If you have a deficiency in any of these areas you cannot

expect to receive an “A”. If you are concerned about your grade it is your responsibility to

schedule a meeting with me. Each student will have an individual meeting scheduled with the

instructor shortly after the midterm. Please note: Attendance is absolutely required for the ENTIRE

final critique (I will notify you of the day/time as soon as the Finals Schedule is posted). You will be

graded on the following:

Each student is required to complete a detailed self-evaluation essay at the end of the course.

I will also be giving handouts and online assignments as needed.

Blackboard and CCNY email addressBlackboard is a crucial tool for communication in this class. Not only will we be using it for

discussions on readings, but I will also post weekly assignment descriptions, links, images, memos,

directions, extra credit opportunities and other important information on our blackboard page. I

expect for you to be on blackboard regularly. You are also now required to have a City College



email address. You will be doing course evaluations via your CCNY email and will also receiveimportant information through this email address. You must go to the CCNY website and follow

prompts for BOTH email and CCNY portal. http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/portal/

Prep NotesIt is your responsibility to come to class prepared in order to have an enriched conversation aboutthe readings. Therefore, you are required to post prep notes on blackboard. Prep notes on articles

are to prepare you to lead a class discussion on the reading if called on to do so and/or participate

actively in a discussion. Your prep notes should be your personal response to the reading. I am not

looking for a summary but your opinion, thoughts, and ideas. Prep notes should be 250+ words.

Prep notes for technical readings should be a summary of your understanding of the material

covered. Also if you have any questions, you should include those in your prep notes too. Someone

might help you out and create a thread to answer your question! You will also be required to post

prep notes for your assignments. These will serve as a written proposal regarding your idea for an

assignment. Prep notes must be posted by 9pm Monday. Class prep notes and class

participation form an important part of your grade. I strongly recommend that you write your prep

notes in word first, do a spell check, save, and then cut and paste them into blackboard. Blackboard

can be funky and you don’t want to risk losing a great prep note before anyone gets to read it!

PLEASE NOTE: Late posts or posts under 250+ words will result in a 0. If you ever have problems

with blackboard, please email me your prep notes by the due date/time and then post them once

you can log on again.

AssignmentsAll assignments are posted in detail on blackboard. Creative assignments are the core of this course.

There will be approximately 4 major assignments plus your midterm and final. Your assignments

are due as a complete final product at the beginning of class on the critique/due date. I

try to give assignments that are open enough where each student can approach the project in their

unique way. Unless otherwise noted, you must turn in photo quality print(s) for critiques. Eachassignment will have specifications and guidelines, if you have an idea that does not fit within the

given guidelines, please discuss your idea with me before you start your project. Work on computerscreens or standard paper will be considered incomplete and will not be critiqued or graded. There

will be opportunities for you to show work-in-progress in order to better develop your piece before itis due. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of getting feedback on a work-in-progress! Also

pay close attention to the guidelines for each project. Sometimes you will be required to turn in

notes, test prints and other supporting materials. If you do not turn in ALL required materials andfollow the directions per project, your project will be marked down.

You will be turning in your work in 3 different ways:1. digital files in the “digital photo” folder on labshare

2. completed photographic prints (or approved equivalent) in envelope3. high quality prints or documentation prints for your “portfolio” and on CD-ROM

IMPORTANT: At the midterm and last day of class you will be turning in your portfolio and a CD-ROM

containing all of your projects. Your portfolio and CD-ROM will be graded at both of these points.

Your portfolios will be returned but the CD-ROMs will not be returned.

Required Materials/Equipment• 35mm camera with manual options and/or good quality digital camera* (4 megapixel or

higher, if your camera has less, talk to me)

• Digital photographic paper and/or other high quality digital paper/material (to be discussed

week two)

Notebook and folder or 3 ring binder• Black Itoya binder with acetate sleeves with 8.5 x 11 pages

• CD-Roms for storage and for midterm and final project portfolios

• Mounting/Matting board or equivalent for final project

• Standard size plastic envelopes with string closure for assignments (at least one)

• Post-it notes

• 35mm film and/or digital media (memory sticks, compact flash cards, etc)

*Many of you already have digital cameras. Some of you will choose to buy them now that you are in thiscourse! There are some resources that can help you decide which camera is best for you. I am happy to give

Useful MaterialsA home computer with photoshop, a home inkjet printer, scanners, firewire drives (or other portable

storage), old photographs, alternative cameras (toy, polaroid, etc), camera accessories. You might

choose to bring your own USB connecting mouse to use in the lab. Traditional art supplies and

materials could come in handy.

ScheduleA detailed week-by-week schedule will be posted on blackboard in the “Assignments” section. It is

your responsibility to keep up to date and on top of deadlines. PLEASE NOTE: We use the Internet a

lot for this course!!! You must check blackboard and your email regularly. If you do not check your

CCNY email daily, please forward your CCNY email to your personal email account.

Photographers/ArtistsAn important part of inventing yourself as an artist is finding role models. To this end we will look at

and read about many photographers. You will also be required to do a major research presentation

on a photographer at the midterm. There is also at least one tentatively scheduled fieldtrip to a

museum/galleries or to an artist’s lecture. There will also be some extra credit opportunities

throughout the semester.

Facilities and EquipmentThis class takes place in a Macintosh/Apple environment. All demos will be done on an Apple

computer. As a member of this class you will have some special privileges and therefore some extra

responsibility. We have two Sony DSC-V1 digital cameras that are designated for this course only!

They will be available for checkout. We also have an Epson 7600 wide-format printer. This printer is

going to have very limited access, but will hopefully result in some beautiful, exhibition qualityprints. I will discuss the rules for the above equipment in the following weeks. The lab also has a

Nikon slide/negative scanner and numerous flatbed scanners. We also have small inkjet printers, aan Epson R2400 (for matte paper only) and one color laser printer available for student projects. If

you will plan on using the EDM facilities for printing you must follow the print center procedures andlab monitors will print out your projects. The equipment and computers in these labs are on very

high demand. If you are reliant on equipment in the lab, you are going to have to PREPLAN and

work ahead of schedule in order to ensure you have your assignments prepared when due. NEVERPLAN ON PRINTING THE DAY OF CRITIQUE! If you decline to follow the lab rules you will lose lab

WEEK ONE: DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY HOMEWORK

Criticizing Photographs--The Singular Image

Please read carefully and complete by 2/06/07 (prep notes due 2/05/07)

1. Read handout from Criticizing Photographs (Describing Photographs) by Terry Barrett

2. Post prep notes for Criticizing Photographs (250+ words) on blackboard by Monday9pm or if blackboard is not up, please email to me ([email protected]) by

the 9pm deadline!3. With a digital camera, please take a photograph of whatever you want. Although you are

only turning in a singular image, I expect you will want to take many. Your goal is tobring in a photograph that shows where you are at right now. This could be what you are

thinking about, what you are interested in, what disturbs you, what intrigues you…Basically, it must be interesting to you and something that you are prepared to talk

about. You must bring a PRINT of your singular image in. This photograph can be blackand white or color. Please bring the photograph to class on Tuesday, February 6, 2007.

Be prepared to talk about this image. You must present a good quality digital print.(If you do not have a digital camera please speak to me!)

4. Purchase your textbook. Please bring text to class.5. Get your CCNY email account active and get your Login ID and password for CUNY portal.

Make sure to test out your CCNY email and look around blackboard.
