About the Author

Arshile Gorky was born on 15.04.1904 Vari Khorkom year in Armenia, died on 21 July 1948 in Sherman, Connecticut. He is considered one of the greatest American artists of Armenian descent. Gorky’s paintings are the example of abstract expressionism.

About the AuthorArshile Gorky was a melancholic person, he longed for his family and home country and often referred to the tragic death of his mother. His final years of life were series of personal tragedies. First, a fire completely destroyed his studio. Later, he was diagnosed with cancer. He also had a dangerous car accident in which his neck was broken and he suffered partial paralysis of his hand with which he painted.

Subject

The first paintings began to be created just at the beginning of the Twenties. In his early works the sign of Impressionism is visible. After moving to New York, he was fascinated by the paintings of Paul Cezanne. He painted "Landscape in the Manner of Cezanne" and "Landscape, Staten Island” at that time. In subsequent years, Gorky sought inspiration in Cubism and Surrealism.

His paintings were on the walls of American galleries and museums, in New

York, for example.
