Press Release from Johnson County Amateur Radio Association - April 27, 2018

Source: George D. Odom, K4ETN, President, Johnson City Amateur Radio Association, Inc

Johnson City Amateur Radio Association Receives Grant Funding

Johnson City, TN April 27, 2018:

The Johnson City Amateur Radio Association, Inc. has been awarded grant funding for retrofitting and upgrad-

ing their communications trailer for emergency responses. Amateur radio is a vital part of emergency prepared-

ness throughout the United States.

The grant will outfit the unit with the latest in communications radios, computers and work stations. The grant

also provides for the replacement of the 146.79 JCARA repeater with a new Yaesu DR-2X System Fusion re-

peater, duplexer and antenna system. HF through UHF communications ability will be supported in the new

configuration.

On site local communications will be handled through a permanently installed System Fusion UHF repeater

system, along with a Yaesu FTM-400XDR dual band base station on board the unit and supported by ten Yae-

su FT-70D dual band digital/analog handheld units.

The importance of fixed equipment reduces setup time during activation’s and minimizes the need for unpack-

ing equipment on arrival.

The communications trailer will continue to be used for events such as Field Day, public service events and

community relations appearances.

The grant was made possible through the efforts of the Washington County Emergency Management Office,

TN Department of Health Emergency Preparedness Office and The Northeast Tennessee Healthcare Prepar-

edness Coalition.

Completion of the project is expected by the end of summer 2018.

MTARS TULLAHOMA HAMFEST

Sponsored by: MTARS - Middle TN Amateur Radio Society Date: Saturday, March 10, 2018 Place: First Methodist Church Tullahoma, TN

There was a good-sized crowd that came to visit the MTARS Tullahoma Hamfest. Once a few technical issues

were resolved, there was an interesting ARRL forum, including discussion about the new ARES task book. Fol-

lowed by, of course, some award-winning BBQ!

2018 “Ides of March Hamfest”

Sponsored by - Reelfoot Amateur Radio Club

Date: Saturday, March 24, 2018 Place: Tennessee National Guard Armory

Union City, TN

There was a steady stream of visitors who came to the Hamfest, which is a time-honored tradition sponsored by the Reelfoot Amateur Radio club. There were all kinds of new and used ham items for sale by various ven-dors, as well as some goods that make our non-ham activities much easier! What would a Hamfest be without a little excitement to liven things up? Not long after starting, the fire alarm sounded—which woke everyone up to say the least! No second cup of coffee needed after that! No fire, and things calmed down pretty quickly, but it DID give folks something new to remember about their visit to Union City! The onsite VE Testing sessions at the 2018 Hamfest resulted in some new licensees to our Amateur Radio Community, including some “youth” operators! Their luck carried over to the prize booth, where they both en-joyed winning good prizes during the many drawings that took place throughout the day.

MEMPHIS FreeFest®

Sponsored by: Mid-South Amateur Radio Association

Date: Saturday, April 14, 2018 Place: Bartlett Station Municipal Center

5868 Stage Road Bartlett, TN

There were several great events at the Memphis FreeFest, including a Mars Meeting, Seminars, and VE

Testing. Some great vendor displays, and of course, tasty concessions kept visitors busy at this annual

TOTALLY FREE “FreeFest” in between all of the scheduled activities. There was also a steady stream on

visitors to the Raffle ticket booth throughout the day. All proceeds benefited the LeBonheur Children’s Hos-

pital.

The VE testing in the morning brought some new licensees into the Amateur Radio world. The ARRL Forum started when the testing wrapped up, providing valuable information about the Delta Division and the TN Section.

CATS Tailgate

Sponsored by: Clarksville Amateur Transmitting Society

Date: Saturday, May 12, 2018 Place: Hilldale Family Life Center Clarksville, TN 37040

A very lively tailgate north of Nashville, with several tables and true “Tailgates” in the back of pick-up trucks! Many good deals to be had, some great grilled food, and a station set up to give visitors a chance to get on the air!

Each Monday evening at 9:00 p.m. ET/ 8:00 p.m. CT, amateur radio operators from across the Tennessee “check

in” to the MTEARS net to confirm their ability to communicate using the MTEARS system BEFORE it is needed for

an actual emergency. All amateur radio operators are encouraged to check into the net. During an actual emergen-

cy (severe storms, or other events), only designated liaisons will check into the net , and all other operators would

check into their local net.

Counties are called by the MTEARS Net Control station for East TN, then Middle TN, then West TN, either by coun-

ty groups or by individual county. Amateur Radio operators checking into the net are asked to wait until their

county is called, then check in by stating their county twice, then their call sign, then their name. They will be

acknowledged by Net Control before moving on to the next county. Those who miss checking in with their county

will be given another opportunity to do so later in the net.

WHAT IS MTEARS? (from MTEARS.org website http://mtears.org/ )

“Dedicated "MTEARS" UHF only repeaters serving as a "liaison net" during severe weather. That is that the individual

storm spotters continue to use their local frequencies and report weather conditions to their local organization. When an

organization receives a report of a tornado, funnel cloud or other severe weather criteria (hail that is 0.75 inches in diameter

or larger, or winds greater than 57 mph), a liaison from the local spotter organization relays the report to the National

Weather Service. Amateur radio operators at the National Weather Service Office will also give warning, weather summar-

ies, and radar information to the liaisons, who in turn pass the information on to their local spotter network. Spotters and

citizens are encouraged to monitor these frequencies, but to limit the traffic on this network, please report severe weather

to your local spotter groups instead of on these frequencies. A number of meteorologists at the National Weather Service

Nashville office are amateur radio operators and communicate with the spotters on the MTEARS Repeater Link System.”

AMATEUR RADIO EMERGENCY SERVICES (ARES) ... If you are not part of your local Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) group, please consider becoming a member.

They offer valuable services their served communities, not just in times of severe conditions, but many also serve the com-

munications needs for local events. As an ARES member, you will learn ways to enhance your Amateur Radio operating

skills BEFORE you need them. For more information about ARES in the ARRL TN section, check out web page at http://

tnares.com/ .

“ARES volunteers are licensed amateur radio operators who are organized and trained to provide emergency communica-

tions during emergencies and public service events. "When all else fails" is a motto of ARES because in many instances,

amateur radio communications are operational when other communications systems have failed or are over burdened.”

To get involved, simply find the county you wish to serve in on the tnares.com website, and get in contact with the emer-

gency coordinator.
