HistoryArq Psychotrauma Expert Group

Arq Psychotrauma Expert Group was formed in 2007. The initiative for this had come from Foundation Centrum ’45, and was underpinned by the conviction that close cooperation on the theme of psychotrauma care is of great added value to both clients and institutions. Over the years the group has expanded. Each workin wn field and in its own manner, all affili-ated institutions are engaged in the prevention and impact of overwhelming events or psychotrauma. Arq brings together the affiliated partners’ specialisms, facilitates and connects. Besides, Arq initiates and drives the public discourse on the matter.

MissionArq Psychotrauma Expert Group

Arq Psychotrauma Expert Group sees it as its mission to help prevent adverse health effects of overwhelming events where possible. Arq offers effective support and (after)care where necessary. The demand for specialist care services in the wake of overwhelming events is of a limited and episodic nature. Prevention, support, (after)care and research need to be organized in the best possible manner. Arq Psychotrauma Expert Group has thus set itself the task of bringing together and enhancing knowledge and expertise gained in the field of psychotrauma. The aim is to enable people who find themselves in well-nigh unliveable situations due to the impact of overwhelm-ing events to pick up the threads of their lives again and to help them live autonomously, within their own social context and regain trust.

Support and aftercareArq Psychotrauma Expert Group

Arq views support, a clear vision for the further development of care ser-vices and policy as one coherent whole. Arq converts its knowledge and experience into interventions and policy in order to be able to work preven-tatively. The partners in Arq possess the expertise to be able to provide the right kind of support at the right moment. Most people recover after an overwhelming event and regain their balance of their own accord. However, a number of people find that their resilience has (temporarily) decreased. By ensuring adequate crisis or incident management that focuses on the psychosocial aspects of the event, an employer and/or the social environ-ment provide a good basis for restoring resilience. With continuing tensions, coaches or experts are available.

Diagnostics and treatment are recommended when someone continues to present persistent stress reactions or health problems following an over-whelming event and these bring obvious distress or restrictions. People suffering from complex psychotrauma complaints, victims of human traffick-ing and refugees may appeal to the specialist care (TOPGGz [TOP Clinical Mental Health Care]) that is available from Arq.

Guidelines and protocols may help authorities and companies set up a good safety net and a code of conduct with which to provide care and support in the wake of overwhelming events. Knowledge based on research and expertise obtained hands-on in the field is made available in accessible and understandable forms by Arq to benefit organisations involved in the after-care to survivors of overwhelming events.

Page 13: Arq Psychotrauma Expert Group · the partners in Arq form a personal union. For each partner and for Foun-dation Arq, the members are the same individuals. The supervisory board appoints

An important mainspring of the establishment of Arq was the wish to utilize what had been learnt from the treatment of WWII survivors with other target groups. One lesson learnt involved the discovery that advocacy, knowledge and care are inextricably bound up with each other. Contacts with fellow survivors, volunteer work, services and social work go to support and promote self-management. Being alive to the context of the overwhelming experiences, recognizing and acknowl edg-ing the impact of traumatic experiences have proved their worth over the past decades.

ResearchArq Psychotrauma Expert Group

One of the core activities of Arq Psychotrauma Expert Group involves trans-lating scientific research into its practical application. Working in cooperation with national and international universities Arq carries out scientific research and coaches researchers. Arq’s primary aim is to enhance the support and (after) care to traumatized individuals.

Education and training are closely connected to the research conducted. Knowledge needs to be disseminated and shared. Thus, Arq organises scien-tific lectures and conferences and offers, if so requested, a variety of courses, modules and training activities, for instance in collaboration with the training institute RINO Noord-Holland [Regional Institution for Continuing Training and Education]. Arq also contributes to the training for psychiatrists, psychothera-pists, healthcare-psychologists, and clinical psychologists. Trainees of such vocational training programmes as the UAS Nursing course [HBO-V], advanced nursing course (nurse practitioners), social work, socio-educational care work [SPH] and non-verbal therapy do part of their work experience with Arq.

Arq has developed the digital Dutch and English-language Psychotraumanet to make knowledge accessible and available to a wide variety of target groups, including war victims, care givers and students. Of course, this knowledge network also comprises all Arq development areas. Arq deploys www.psychotraumanet.org/en to share information widely. Psychotrauma-net is an online knowledge platform on the theme of psychosocial care and safety during and following overwhelming events. Psychotraumanet is an open knowledge platform that also features contributions from external experts.

Research projects and the application of knowledge converge in the development areas in which Arq partners participate in varying compositions.Their expert status is based on their scientific research. This research needs to have social relevance as well as practical applications. Arq is an authority on the subject of social issues of psychotrauma care. Because of this, Arq holds a great appeal for (inter) national specialists working in this field. In order to structure its research Arq has opted to work with development areas linked to the different stages of psychotrauma:

e-HealthArq Psychotrauma Expert Group

Arq is developing possibilities as to e-health, including a digital patient plat-form, apps for screening, diagnostics and treatment as well as virtual-reality programmes. Arq is enhancing its diagnostics and referral function through product differentiation. Arq not only develops registration apps that can quickly distinguish between a light but adequate diagnosis or a diagnosis that is of necessity comprehensive, but also develops an aggression app and toolkit for managers. Thus, the aggression app comes with a syllabus with some theory, an escalation game, stress management, protocols and offers the possibility to report aggression. This enables ‘blended learning’, where electronic and personal contacts are combined. It furthers a better embedding of knowledge. The tool kit offers possibilities for putting aggression within an organisation on the agenda and for tackling it. Arq is enhancing its visibility through the use of media such as Twitter and LinkedIn and opens up knowledge and information through databanks such as the Knowledge Bank Overwhelming Events, the Indies DVD databank, the Heritage databank and the Kind and Trauma databank.

Arq sets great store by embedding its knowledge and experience in publi-cations to benefit scientists, therapists and other interested parties. In the course of time this has yielded an impressive series of influential books and journals. For instance, Arq not only publishes a number of periodicals tailored to specific target groups but also such a unique magazine as Inter-vention, which can claim world-wide readership. This magazine connects science and research with practical care work and provides a lively platform where professionals exchange experiences. Intervention is read in over sixty countries, with summaries in Arabic, French, Russian, Pashto, Sinhala, Spanish and Tamil. The WHO has enabled free-of-charge circulation in local organisations in low and middle-income countries. The magazine can be accessed online via over sixteen hundred academic libraries and research centres.

In these pages, incidentally, you will only find a selection of all the products we have developed over the past years. You are welcome to a complete overview of our publications in our library.

The Institute for Psychotrauma (IVP), the only private company in the Arq group, is an expert in the field of overwhelming events. IVP supports and helps authorities, social organisations and the business community to prevent overwhelming events and restrict their impact. IVP offers training and has a national network for (group) care and therapy.

Impact amasses knowledge on psychosocial care and safety in the wake of overwhelming events, and shares that knowledge with inter-ested parties to help them reinforce their resilience and to restrict any adverse effects. Impact offers advice and support to organisations and authorities concerning psychosocial care and safety with crises.

Cogis is the national knowledge institute for the psychosocial impact of war, persecution and violence. Cogis brings its knowledge of war to bear on topical themes such as radicalisation and the question how to deal with victims in the wake of a disaster and the commemoration of war and acts of violence.

The 1940-1945 Foundation provides services to former members of the resistance, victims of persecution and civilian war victims from the 1940-1945 period.

Foundation Pelita is dedicated in the Netherlands to the well-being of Indies Dutch men and women and Moluccans (and their offspring) who were forced to leave the former Dutch East Indies after the war, bersiap (struggle for independence) and decolonisation.

Foundation Centrum ’45 is the national centre for specialist diagnos-tics and treatment of people with complex psychotrauma complaints. Treatment goes hand in hand with quality control and scientific research. Knowledge transfer is of paramount importance. Centrum ’45 carries the TOP Clinical Mental Health Care quality mark [TOPGGz] and is HKZ-certified.

Equator Foundation provides psychiatric and psychosocial care to traumatized refugees and victims of human trafficking in the Nether-lands to promote their psychological recovery and social bonding.

The Psychotrauma Diagnosis Centre (PDC) investigates the psychological impact of traumatic events and advises about treatment possibilities. For specific target groups the PDC has set up separate outpatient units, such as the outpatient unit for police.

War Trauma Foundation (WTF) helps people and communities all over the world that have been affected by war and violence. Together with local organisations WTF develops and documents knowledge to deal with the psychosocial impact of war and violence. WTF trains care- givers and forms regional networks in conflict areas to help people work together towards psychosocial recovery.
