Around the Traps

We have your future at heart!

2

Part of our commitment to the

Governments new reform “Living

Longer – Living Better” and our own

“Total Model of Care Framework” is

looking at areas where further

support and services can be provided

that will enhance our residents and

staff lifestyle. As part of this, Scott

Patrick, our physiotherapist, is now

on-site at Star Gardens four days per

week. We see this as an extremely

valuable addition to our Star Gardens

services and will provide increased

and ongoing support for all of our

resident’s needs. Scott’s exercise

and balance classes in particular are

extremely popular with all of our

residents.

Star Gardens has a visiting podiatrist

Trent Asmus who attends residents

every fortnight on a Thursday. To

make an appointment with Trent

please see the supervisor in your

area for assistance.

The lovely ladies from Ryan’s

Hairdressing come every Tuesday

morning. Please see the supervisor in

your area to make an appointment.

The salon is open from 9am on-

wards.

Winter has been a long time coming this year but it has finally arrived with the mornings cooling off considerably. Fortunately in the beautiful Scenic Rim the days are usually lovely. Our residents have had plenty of opportunities over the last few months to get out and about to enjoy our surrounds with outings to parks, pubs and entertainment.

A celebration of the life of Audrey Togne was held here at Star Gardens recently. Audrey was a driving force behind the establishment of Star Gardens here in Beaudesert. The OES, Staff, Residents and the public took some time to celebrate her life and her contribution here with a commemorative service in Jessamine lounge. On Sunday 8th June.

Another milestone in June has been Glady’s Dauth 100th Birthday. As a celebration In honour of her centenary, Glady’s family and Star Gardens hosted a function on her

birthday, Sunday 15th June. Gladys is a local Beaudesert identity being the founder of the enormously popular choir “Glad’s Girls” and being a horse women of some renown in her earlier days. I’m sure you will join everyone here at Star Gardens in wishing Gladys a very Happy Birthday!

Star Aged Living – Strategic Plan. In conjunction with senior management, the Board takes the lead in reviewing and mapping out the strategic direction of our Organisation. The Board takes time every three to five years to develop a long-term plan for Star Aged Living, to ensure its future sustainability and growth. In July 2014 the Board and senior management will be spend 2 days carrying out this review, and setting the direction for the next five years.

As always, if you have any comments, concerns or would like to talk, please do not hesitate to come and see us at your earliest convenience.

Osteoarthritis Its coming into winter and the cold weather brings with it an increase of joint pain due to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a mechanical degeneration of a joint space that is typified by loss of cartilage and effects surrounding bone and soft tis-sue.

This type of arthritis can be accelerated by an injury during your life but other factors like your genes, development, strength and mechanical problems can lead to osteoarthritis.

Symptoms include pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, swelling and chronic thick swelling that we call a joint effusion. Loss of joint range of motion and muscle strength can occur secondarily because of pain inhibiting activity and exercise.

Common sites for osteoarthritis are knees, hips, shoulders and the bases of thumbs. Also your spine gets arthritis but is sometimes called spondylitis.

Osteoarthritis can’t be reversed (yet) but can be removed via joint replacement surgery. Besides this there are several things that may help the pain including:

Movement- simple joint range of motion exercise will help. Heat to the joint- get your hot packs ready for winter.

Massage

Medication- Simple paracetamol can help with bone pain. Also anti-inflammatory medication might help.

Hydrotherapy- exercise in hot water.

TENS- a machine that can mask the pain.

Exercise will also help avoid the ravages of osteoarthritis such as loss of strength and joint range of motion.

There is no easy answer for arthritis but please feel free to talk to me more about the information provided.

Hello fellow residents. Here I am, back for another chronicle on exciting events to come at Star Gardens. Anzac Day was very memorable day for all concerned and the Star Gardens Memorial Service on the Tuesday before the march on Friday 25th was well attended. Rainbow residents who had either family or in some cases were involved in any of the conflicts brought photos and stories to the dining room walls so others could read some of the history. In my case my father was in the air force stationed in Darwin. One of our residents was a spotter on the coast of England and she also met Winston Churchill. We have quite a few x army nurses amongst us and we can just imagine the hardships they and all the injured servicemen had to endure. My generation must realise this because all the attendance at all services throughout Australia and Anzac Cove were crowded.

On May 6 residents attended a Glads Girls concert in the civic centre. What a wonderful morning for all concerned. Thanks to all staff who cared for the residents who attended the concert.

One of our residents turned one hundred years old on the 15th of June. Glad was the founder of Glad’s Girls so on the June 17 Glads Girls had a special concert to celebrate this

occasion at the Civic Centre with all proceeds going to Star Gardens. A number of residents attended this wonderful morning.

Friends of Star Gardens next B.B.Q. Will be held on the fifth Sunday in the month, which to my reckoning will be the 29Th of June this will be at lunch-time as it is to cold and dark at night Tom Moore and Ken Jurd will enter-tain everyone.

Date Claimer...In July the O.E.S are having a fete here in Beaudesert to raise money for Star Gardens. This will be held on the weekend of the 12th & 13th of July in the St Mary’s Hall on the Boonah-Beaudesert Road, Beaudesert. You can help by spreading the word for family members to attend. Look out for advertisements closer to the dates.

In closing this newsletter I hope those residents and staff who have been sick are feeling a lot better. This flu has hit very hard . See you in the hallways.

Who remembers… Monday Wash Day

I remember very clearly my mother doing her washing in a copper boiler in the back yard. She used to put a blue cube wrapped in material with the clothes to get them white.

Well into the 1950’s, most Australian women washed by hand. Doing a family’s washing involved a complex process of heating water, soaking clothes, agitating them with a posser, scrubbing them on a board, rinsing and pushing them through a wringer.

The clothes line was commonly a wire strung between two poles, propped up with another piece of wood. For many the frustrations of wash day were compounded when the pole fell over or the line broke, pitching clean clothes into the mud. The picture of the dipper to the left. Used to transfer clean water to the wash tub is a reminder of the hard work involved in keeping the family’s linen clean.

Who remembers items such as the Sunlight soap grated up into the water? Wiping the line down so nothing got dirty? Helping mum put the clothes through the wringer? Watching mum man handling the sheets out of the copper with a big stick?

A Love of Picnics Our residents love picnics and who wouldn’t living in the Scenic Rim with so many lovely spots not far away to visit. Beaudesert is very lucky to be central to many different vistas. Over the last few months we have had a number of outings to a few of our favourite places.

Jacobs Well on a sunny day is always enjoyed especially when fish and chips are on the menu. Everyone enjoyed a morning watching boats and birds from their position under the trees. (picture opposite top)

Our other outings headed bush up Christmas Creek Road. One day was to Stinson Park for a picnic by the creek (below left). On another occasion, Dossie’s family(Dossie is a resident of Violet) who run Cave Rock Cottages, invited residents to a picnic by their creek. As a special treat one of the neighbours came down with his old car for all to view and have some photos taken in front of (pictures opposite bottom) and another surprise visitor was a baby goat for pats and cuddles. (below right is Ian & Rosemary Oakes with Ivy Conners and the goat). An

absolutely brilliant day and thanks must be given to Gayle Wilson for the invitation

It is a real boost for our residents to have the opportunity to head outside in the fresh air and have something different to look at. Part of the enjoyment for many is the drive to and from where you get to see what is happening around the area. As part of our commitment to enriching the lives of our residents at Star Gar-dens it is important to us to be able to offer these trips out. A huge thank you must go to our volunteers who assist us with these as we couldn’t do it without their help.

From Beach...

...to BUSH!

Matilda Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong Under the shade of a coolabah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled: You’ll come a-waltzing Matilda with me. Down cam Matilda dressed-up in her finery; Up jumped the swagman and grabbed her with glee, And he sang as he danced her round and round the coolabah: You’ll come a-waltzing Matilda with me. Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred, Saw Wife Matilda waltz, one, two, three. Get, be gone, swagman! Take your tea and tucker-bag! My Wife Matilda is waltzing with me! Up jumped the swagman, leapt up on the thoroughbred, Into the sunset, riding merrily, And his voice could be heard as it echoed round the billabong: You’ll coma-waltzing Matilda with me. Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda, You’ll com a-waltzing Matilda with me. Leave your stuffy squatter, meet me here on Saturday, You’ll come a-waltzing Matilda with me! Daphne Dennis 19-08-11

One fine day in early May Star Gardens had some goats come to visit. Kim Billiau, who is a staff mem-ber here, with the help of her son kindly brought in a few of her show goats for residents to meet. A pen was set up on the lawn near Rainbow café so that everyone could come out at their leisure to sit and watch them and have a pat if they chose. For

those who couldn’t come out Sam, one of our care staff and goat girl for the day took one around so the op-portunity wasn’t missed. We often notice how a resident will light up when given the opportunity to inter-act even in a small way with an ani-mal so we are always thankful when staff choose to share their pets with us for the benefit of our residents.

A few footy lovers got together in Jessamine to watch the kick off for round 1 of the State of Origin. Not a good night for Qld but it will be on again in two weeks. Go Qld!!

State of Origin

Australian Bush Buddies A visit from Australian Bush Buddies recently gave residents the opportunity to interact with a number of Australian animals including birds, snakes, lizards and gliders. This short presentation promotes a greater appreciation of our native wildlife and the need for conservation. It was a wonderful chance to touch some animals that we probably wouldn’t choose to if we came across them in a more natural situation. Thanks to Louise for sharing her friends with us.

Helen Castillo. Helen joined Star Gardens in 2009 after a number of times here as an agency nurse and loved it so much she wanted to stay. Features that drew her to us were the lovely relaxing, friendly atmosphere of the areas and the rural, community feel. Helen enjoys her work and loves all the residents under her care. As well as her position as a care nurse, Helen orientates new staff and placement students. Helen also mentors new staff in their first months. Away from Star Gardens Helen enjoys fishing with her husband, her horses and dogs and her garden. The roses are her pride and joy and we have all enjoyed their beauty when bunches have come in to work over the years..
