Quote of the Month

February 2014

At Nikkei Senior Gar-dens, we are fortunate to have an amazing supportive outside-community. From this com-munity, we have had many people volunteer at the vari-ous activities, special events, and outings that have been

planned for our residents over the years. Thanks to these volunteers we are able to provide a wide variety of activities and programs for our residents. Cultural ac-tivities, such as mahjong, Japanese cal-ligraphy and bon dance, and activities that are life enriching, such as cooking class, outings to museums, and Tai chi.

Many of the volunteers have been with Nikkei Senior Gardens since it’s grand opening in ear-ly 2009 and continue to engage with our residents on a regular basis. They have become part of the family here at Nik-kei.

Nikkei Senior Gardens would like to thank all the volunteers who have gen-erously donated their time to the life en-richment program over the years. Your

kindness, ongoing support and compassion for volunteer work has not gone unnoticed. The residents and resident families of NSG will continue to thrive through the life enriching activities.

What Makes Us Happy? New study identifies predictors of happiness and

depression in older seniors

Researchers posed questions that “assessed happiness, perceived health, social provision, economic security and life satisfaction” to 158 seniors at least 100 years of age. What they dis-covered was that resources did not affect happi-ness but that “past life satisfaction — even re-calling isolated individual achievements — had a direct association, proving to be the key to happi-ness in oldest years”.

The findings from this study led researchers to encourage caregivers to “implement programs, including reminiscence therapy and structured life review sessions, to foster feelings of happiness among very old populations”. They also “suggest that caregivers in nursing homes make efforts to converse more with residents (even briefly) to help ease their depressive symptoms”.

What does this mean for you? Take steps now to ensure you enjoy a higher quality of life in your golden years.

Talk about options now: One of the key indica-tors of depression, especially in older seniors, was the inability to choose living arrangements. There are many senior living options today and a premature move to a nursing home is unneces-sary. The different options include home health care, independent retirement living, Continuing Care Retirement Communities, assisted living and more. Discuss your hopes for retirement with family early before circumstances require a sud-den move.

Get involved: Remember the importance of so-cialization! Find groups, clubs, organizations, or causes that interest you. In addition to the many mental and physical benefits of socialization, con-necting with others who share similar interests can be the foundation of a support system later in life.

Hang on to the past: Keep mementos (scrapbooks, journals, photos, or even just men-tal notes), that detail important fond memories in your life. You will value these as you age and your family is likely to enjoy them as well.

This month residents of Nikkei Senior Gardens were able to view the “GO FOR BROKE: Japanese American Soldiers Fighting on Two Fronts Exhibit” on display at the Japanese American National Museum. The exhibit chronicles the history of Japanese American Nisei soldiers from the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and Military Intelligence Service (MIS) who served during World War II to protect their country but more importantly prove their loyalty to the nation that had disowned them.

The exhibit also shows the struggles on and off the battle field for the Japanese American soldiers of the 100th and 442nd. Not only did they fight in eight brutal battles across Europe, but found themselves fighting racism when they returned home. The Nisei veterans with much persistence helped to eliminate hundreds of anti-Asian laws.

The exhibit is on display at the Japanese American National Museum until March 2, 2014.

It is widely be-lieved among the people in Japan that one’s blood-type is the influen-tial factor over one’s personality. It started over 100 years ago, when a doctor concluded that men with O-type blood were good for army soliders. Even though, psychia-trists and doctors say this research is false, it is still believed by many. It is not uncommon for woman to determine compatiability of spouses, based off blood types. Erica Angyal, a Miss Universe Japan official nutritionist and health consultant, has even published books on health and beauty by blood type, such as “Bijo no Ketsuekigata BOOK” (beautiful women’s blood type) and “Bijo no Ketsuekigata-bestu Obento BOOK” (beautiful women’s lunch box by each blood type). The Question is...What blood type are you? And does it match this 100 year old belief?
