By Lisa Clements

On Sunday 10th October, I attended the Point Cook Fiesta at the Point Cook Town Centre. It was a magnificent day, with very little wind and brilliant sunshine. Murnong and Main Streets had been blocked off and made into a temporary mall. There were rides for the kids, free face painting, community stalls and plenty of shopping bargains, as most retailers put on sales.

Entertainment was provided by the Werribee Show Band, followed by the Indian Dance Group, Rochana Natyala. The girls looked lovely in their colourful costumes, and their act was a real hit with the crowd. These were followed by a Robbie Williams Tribute band, which played most of his hits.

I had an interesting discussion with Tony Barbara of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, Werribee South. He was there with one of the Coast Guard’s two boats, which is a Rigid Inflatable Boat, or RIB. This boat is six metres long, is powered by two 75 horsepower motors, and is equipped with a marine radio.

Dancers from the Indian dance group, Rochana Natyala.

Many kids took the opportunity to have their photo taken at the helm of the boat. The Coast Guard’s task is to assist civilians who get into trouble on the water, and the area they cover is huge: technically from Werribee across to Portarlington, however their areas overlap and they can go all over Port Phillip Bay if required. Their jobs are usually referred from the Police, however they don’t have a law enforcement capability and if they see a crime committed, they call the Police. (Cont. Page 2)

I had assumed that the Coast Guard only provides coverage for our seas, however that is not true. For example, the RIB was used during the recent floods at Shepparton. I am told that there is one particularly grateful cat owner, whose pets were rescued from the trees!

The other Coast Guard boat had been called out onto Port Phillip Bay that morning, for a boat which had broken down. Thankfully nobody was hurt and everyone returned home safe and sound.

I had never given the Coast Guard a second thought, but after this discussion I now realize what a great job they do. All staff are volunteers, and they provide a 24/7 service via a pager service. All staff receive on the job training, including first aid training, and there are administrative roles available for terrible sailors like me! Let’s hope they’re not too busy over the coming summer boating season.

Also of interest was a stall run by Walter Villagonzalo of the Migrant Hub. Walter emigrated from the Phillipines some time ago, and has realized the need for support for migrants. So he started the MiHub Cafe and Community Centre, which is in Hoppers Lane, opposite the Werribee Mercy Hospital. The food is fresh because it is grown on site, and apparently Walter has negotiated with the Wyndham City Council for a similar community garden at the Jamieson Way Community Centre here in Point Cook! (Negotiations are in their final stages, so watch this space for updates.) Walter also commented that we can obtain a starter box of vegetables and worms from the MiHub Cafe, so I’ll be heading down there in the near future. Vegies are courtesy of the Werribee Environmental Community Park. The Migrant Hub also publishes the MiNEWS, which is free and makes interesting reading.

City West Water also had a stall, and I had fun talking with Wilbur The Water Drop. Wilbur was there to reinforce the message to save water.

POINT COOK SHINES FOR LOCAL FIESTA - Continued

The City West Water stall was near the CFA fire truck. One of the firefighters showed me the breathing apparatus. The truck was a hit with the kids and he was kept busy answering questions from them.

Animals On The Move provided a petting zoo. I managed to get a photo of Kermit the Tawny Frogmouth, whose species is related to owls. Kermit was hand reared, and as a result he was awake when he’d normally be sleeping. Taz the sugar glider was also hand reared, because his captive bred parents broke his tail! I tried to get a photo of Charlie the sleepy Common wombat, but looked so peaceful I thought better of disturbing her. Saucy the Eastern Rosella was a talkative boy, and apparently he gets himself into trouble, as he says some naughty things and wolf whistles a lot. Also on display were an Eastern Water Dragon; a blue tongue lizard, a green tree frog and Goldie the non-venomous, hand reared carpet python.

The Victoria Police provided a toy police car for the kids to play on, as well as two model police members for the kids to pretend they’re cops.

There was a display of hot rods provided by Smokin’ Aces hot rods, as well as a roving band in colourful costumes, who played what I thought was

Wilbur with Lakshay, who is nearly 6. Happy Birthday to Lakshay!

Above: Roving entertainment. Right: Tawny the Frogmouth. Far right: A great toy Police Car.

Mexican music. I also dropped in on the B24 Liberator Restoration project, which is underway in a Werribee hangar. Apparently one of the pilots who flew this plane in WW2 is involved in the project and is always available for a chat. The Point Cook Aviation Museum was also represented, as well as the Point Cook Homestead.

I was at the Fiesta for several hours, but I don’t think I saw everything. Guess I will have to get out of bed earlier next year!

Editors Note: Lisa, thank you for this fantastic contribution.

“The Williams Landing Project provides a significant boost to Wyndham’s transport network, building on and supporting new residential communities at Point Cook and at Williams Landing, which is being developed on the site of the old RAAF Laverton Air Base.”

Mr Pakula said the new railway station was part of a $220 million Government investment into expanding rail services across Melbourne, with the initial works to pave the way for major works to start early next year.

“This new premium station is being constructed on the Werribee line, between existing stations in Aircraft and Hoppers Crossing, and will provide integrated public transport services to commuters living in Williams Landing and surrounding suburbs.

“The station will have a new customer service centre, enclosed waiting areas with toilets and approximately 500 car parking spaces.”

Mr Pallas said the $24 million overpass on Palmers Road would provide important access to the new station for the residents in and around Point Cook. “The Palmers Road overpass will

extend beyond the Princes Freeway and across the rail line, providing direct access to the new train station and town centre, as well as connecting to the Princes Freeway and Point Cook,” he said.

Jill Hennessy MP, Member for the Altona District welcomed the early start to works and the massive investment in transport and road infrastructure for the local area.

“Delivering new infrastructure around Williams Landing town centre is an important step to serve the growing community – expected to double in the next 20 years to

96,000 people,” Ms Hennessy said.

“We’re providing better and safer connections for rail patrons, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, with easier access to schools and community facilities for local people.

“The new train station and road connection are expected to open in late 2012 to early 2013,” Ms Hennessy Said.

Publishers NoteThe big news this month is that the first A Frame

sign has been placed outside the new Hobsons Bay Community Workshop in Queen St. opposite the Kooringal Golf Course in Altona.

Without a sign it has been difficult for passers by to locate the old EPA Building located in the Explosive Reserve on the single lane stretch up to the sea from the basketball courts.

Whenever Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed folk are there and the gates are open – the sign would be out on the nature strip.

Council is in charge of the signage and should soon have something permanent in place.

The effort inside the building has been great with the woodworking shop operational and almost complete. The boat construction team are hard at work with completion of their first boat restoration in sight.

The first seminar held by the I.T. group on Internet Marketing was a great success. Fred Gillen of Nitty Gritty Business hosted a small group of interested members and all voted the program to be of great value to their future use of the Internet.

The Printing group sub committee has on loan substantial training equipment and to date some 15 members of HBMS have expressed interest in supporting the operation.

The Novelty Band has held practice on a weekly basis, a process that has produced a number of admirers of their performance. Maybe you have something you would like to do?

A QUICK NOTE FROM THE EDITORA fantastic day for the Point Cook Fiesta, the

weather could not have been better.

Welcome to our new local journalist / writer, Lisa Clements, who did a fantastic article on the Fiesta.

It really does take people who are willing to put in and contribute to make a project like this work. I had the chance to have a coffee with her recently and she is incredibly enthusiastic about the paper and she is full of great ideas.

If you would like to get involved email me at: [email protected]

The Laverton Community Choir formerly known as the Laverton Choir is a non-profit group made up of 26 female and male members of diverse backgrounds and ages. The choir is directed by Chris Ramm, a music teacher and choral conductor and together with organisers Di Coleman and Sandra Horsburgh the choir performs a repertoire of music drawn from a myriad of genres. The choir rehearses at the P-12 College on Bladin Street.

The choir gets a buzz from singing music together, developing their skills and creativity, and celebrating diversity. They aim to perform to their greatest potential, and enjoy being together as ‘like-minded’ people committed to reaching into the community to embrace physical health and spiritual well-being.

To date their performances have been obtained by word of mouth and they have made appearances at the Laverton Point Cook Rotary Club, Wyndham Rotary Club, Bendigo Community Bank events,

Sunrise for Supported Living at Hoppers Crossing and the Newport Festival.

Due to the explosive population belt in neighbouring areas the choir is dedicated to supporting the wider community through the power of music, respecting and entering into the heart of the new and developed suburbs of the west.

The choir was recently invited to perform at the Cocktail Party hosted by the Bendigo Bank to celebrate their 10th Anniversary of Community Banking. The choir was very well received and have formed a strong relationship with the bank who is one of their sponsors.

Each week throughout the month of August a small group from the choir entertained different groups in aged care facilities. This was a particularly enjoyable, experience for both the choir and the audience.

It has been a very productive and exciting eight months for the choir since regrouping in January this year and the last part of the year will be just as exciting.

The choir is looking forward to performing at the Hoppers Crossing Rotary Club, the Bula Foundation Fundraiser in Sanctuary Lakes, the Werribee Craft Festival, the Laverton Festival, the South Kingsville Community Centre in Spotswood and the P-12 College Presentation night. The choir will also be singing at two other aged care events as well as performing at three different community venues for Christmas carols. So you can see that the Laverton Community Choir has indeed had and will continue to have a very busy schedule.

We would like to thank our sponsors because without them we would never have been able to achieve what we have in such a short period of time.

If you are interested in joining please call Di 0418 544 212 or Sandra 9931 1814. You do not need experience just a love of singing and someone who enjoys being part of a fun and enthusiastic group of people.

Working parents expecting a baby in the New Year are now able to lodge their claims for Paid Parental Leave.

Eligible working parents in Point Cook can lodge their claims up to three months before their baby’s due date.

We know how busy it can be for new parents when a baby arrives. To make things easier parents can apply for paid parental leave three months before their baby is due.

The Gillard Labor Government’s Paid Parental Leave scheme provides eligible working parents of babies born or adopted from 1 January 2011 with parental leave pay for up to 18 weeks at the minimum wage, which is currently $570 a week before tax.

From 1 January next year many local casual and part-time workers, contractors and the self-employed, will have access to

Prime Minister of AustraliaFederal Member for Lalor

Hon. Julia Gillard MP

paid parental leave for the first time.

To help parents get all their paperwork done before the birth of their child, claims for Family Tax Benefit and Maternity Immunisation Allowance can also be lodged early, using a combined claim form with Paid Parental Leave.

Eligible expectant parents can apply at www.familyassist.gov.au or they can pick an application form up from a local Family Assistance Offices located in Medicare Australia and Centrelink offices or by calling 13 6150.

Parents in Point Cook planning to claim paid parental leave should plan their caring and leave arrangements and discuss these with their employer before lodging their claim.

Parents who are not eligible for Paid Parental Leave, or who choose not to participate in the scheme, will be able to continue to access the Baby Bonus and Family Tax Benefit if they are eligible.

The Labor Government supports working parents in and that’s why we are delivering Australia’s first Paid Parental Leave scheme on 1 January next year.

We’ve also committed to introducing two weeks paid paternity leave from 1 July 2012, giving local dads time at home with their new born babies.

Try Scottish Country Dancing!Come and join us! It’s lively, social, fun, gets

you off the couch and out of the house, and you don’t need to bring a partner!

But what IS Scottish country dancing? It’s been called the ballroom dancing of Scotland, and there is a quick and a slow travelling step to move you round the dance. Once you have grasped these you have a good headstart. Four couples, the man and woman standing opposite each other in a line, make up one set, and each couple dances through the sequence of movements twice, progressing to the end.

It’s danced to very strict tempo recorded music, with varying combinations of accordion, piano, fiddle, and kettle drums – no bagpipes!

Don’t confuse it with the more familiar Highland dancing, which is competitive and involves special outfits. For class you come casually dressed, but be ready to peel off the outer layers as you can get very warm! Soft flexible jiffies, or soft shoes without a heel, are advisable.

Even if you’ve never danced before, you may find it really draws you in. There are lots of explanations, demonstrations, step practice, and

Timber FencesDecking

walkthroughs to help you get started. We learn in a very relaxed friendly environment, and it doesn’t matter if you make mistakes, as we all do!

Best of all, it helps keep Alzheimers and general stiffening up at bay, helps fitness and muscle tone, gets the heart, lungs and legs moving, lifts your spirits, makes you forget your troubles, and simply brings you joy!

And do you see people enjoying themselves in the gym? Or getting in for a tiny $3 a session?

We practise every Friday at the Jamieson Way Community Centre (next to Carranballac College), in Point Cook. It’s on the 413 bus route from Werribee Plaza. Class runs from 7.45pm to 9.30pm. Leaders Deryck, Joan, and Wendy are experienced dancers who demonstrate and encourage and really want you to learn.

Ring 9394 7905 for more details, and come along and try it!

First thing is to work out what you are looking for - traditional martial arts, gradings, fitness, self defence, fun, social interaction, strength etc. Maybe it is a mix of these things or maybe you are just not sure. Do your homework and look around and see what clubs have to offer - make sure the club has proper Govt accreditation and these clubs (like mine) proudly display their rank and title certification and accreditation. Make sure you talk to the head instructor as they will explain your development path - if you only talk to an admin assistant then how important are you - in my club you have access to myself as a 10th Dan (highest rank in the world). Be careful about just sitting and watching as this can be a little daunting - why not just have a go as most clubs offer a free trial lesson. Decide if you want to train with beginners or (as in my club) integrate in with a variety of levels so that you can be mentored and coached at all levels. Decide if you want to learn by repetition or would it not be better to learn by understanding (as in my club). Be careful of what I call staging (just like the movies and you can be impressed if both parties know what to do - really good whilst people attack you that way on the street - in my opinion a far better way is to arm you with basic skills and then focus on scenarios and whilst it will always be harder for real, you can get an appreciation that the hardest thing is the unknown, therefore we place a high emphasis on avoidance and awareness). Make sure the club trains in a mix of uniforms and street clothes and you are able to ask about what happens if............? So really it comes down to two simple things - identify the danger and then control the situation.

Norwegian Education Delegation Visits Carranballac CollegeDuring the last 18 months, we have had streams of

overseas visitors from groups of Principals, teachers and our equivalent of Regional Directors. Countries represented in these visits included Malaysia, Thailand, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and only last week 16 visitors from Norway.

The Victorian International Education Division, which is a division of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), suggested to the overseas delegation that they visit Carranballac College to experience our approach to teaching and learning in the Early Years area.

We are extremely happy, and very honoured, to be one of four schools recommended by the International Division for the overseas delegation to visit this year.

The day began with a welcome and an introduction to our College by our Director, Peter Kearney and Campus Principal, Kay Kearney. They were followed by our Literacy Coaches, Deb Way and Debra Daffy. Both spoke on our approach to advancing the literacy skills of all students across the College.

Lesley Hall our Assistant Principal (Curriculum) and Teaching and Learning Leader gave an overview of the influence that the DEECD initiative related to the provision of Teaching and Learning Coaches in schools has had on the teaching of literacy particularly in the

Western Metropolitan Region. They then led a discussion session addressing specific questions the delegation had formulated prior to their visit to Melbourne.

During discussions that ensued, both the representatives of the Norwegian delegation and our teachers agreed that students who did best in their learning were those whose parents were supportive and involved in their children’s education.

Improved children’s services welcomed locally

Jill Hennessy MP, Member for Altona District welcomed an extra $1,365,000 in funds for local kinders.

“Through these grants, we are supporting centres to deliver more places, expand their facilities, deliver extended hours and offer high-quality kindergarten programs,” Ms Hennessy said.

Our Government has significantly increased funding for early childhood services across Victoria and today’s announcement builds on our already strong record of investment in early childhood services.

Ms Hennessy said a $1 million grant will be provided to Wyndham City Council to assist in building a children’s centre at the new Featherbrook Community Centre.

“$365,000 will be provided to Hobsons Bay City Council to assist in renovating and refurbishing Seabrook Kindergarten and Russell Court Kindergarten and Children’s Centre.”

“I am thrilled the State Government has provided these funds. This money will help Seabrook Kindergarten and Russell Court Kindergarten renovate and refurbish their centres,” Ms Hennessy said.

What is…!?! Syncopation

In music, syncopation includes a variety of rhythms which are in some way unexpected in that they deviate from the strict succession of regularly spaced strong and weak but also powerful beats in a meter (pulse). These include a stress on a normally unstressed beat or a rest where one would normally be stressed. “If a part of the measure that is usually unstressed is accented, the rhythm is considered to be syncopated.”

More simply, syncopation is a general term for a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm; a placement of rhythmic stresses or accents where they wouldn’t normally occur. (Wikipedia, Oct 2010)

A $75 million funding boost from the Brumby Labor Government will improve safety on metropolitan and regional roads across Victoria, including nearly a $1.5 million boost for Point Cook Road in Seabrook, Member for Altona District, Ms Jill Hennessy MP announced today.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to improve Victoria’s road network and this upgrade will provide important safety benefits for our local community,” Ms Hennessy said.

“Many local residents have raised their concerns about Point Cook Road with me. The funding of almost $1.5 million will deliver improved safety to a 1.2 km stretch of Point Cook Road between Seabrook Boulevard and Homestead Run, Seabrook” Ms Hennessy said.

Works will include pavement widening and a new centre median, shoulder sealing and green bicycle lanes, skid resistance surfacing, line marking, installation of a guard fence at the Bridge, new signage, and street lighting.

“This is a great result for the local community and the many motorists who use this stretch of Point Cook Road

every day.”

“We understand that people are concerned about safety on Victorian roads, that’s why the Brumby Government is taking action to improve community safety and drive down the road toll,” Ms Hennessy said.

Vintage Tiger Moth Joyflights operates from RAAF Point Cook Airfield, which is the longest continually operating airfield in the world. We operate three 1940s Tiger Moths and a Russian military Yak 52 aerobatic aircraft. All our Tiger Moths saw active service in WWII where they operated in the training role. The Tiger Moth was first manufactured by DeHavilland in England in 1931and over 10,000 were built under licence around the world. 1070 Tiger Moths were built at Mascot in NSW and their 4 cylinder Gypsy Major engines were manufactured at Fisherman’s Bend by GMH during the war years. The aircraft are

capable of many aerobatic manoeuvres including spins, loops and rolls. Passengers can get to experience what it was like to fly in these vintage biplanes with their open cockpits by making a booking with Vintage Tiger Moth Joyflights. Ph 1300 138 207. For the thrillseekers, the mighty Yak52 is capable of extreme aerobatics for the ultimate 3D rollercoaster ride. The Yak 52 is powered by a supercharged 9 cylinder radial engine and is stressed +7/-5 G. Our aircraft is a 1991 model and these aircraft are still in current production in Romania. The joyflight business is owned and operated by Garry Herne, a resident at Point Cook, who is also an A330 Captain flying international routes.

From a Cat’s Diary

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on their carpet.

Today I killed a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made

Page 23: Around Point Cook 11

Page 23

condescending comments about what a ‘good little hunter’ I am. Fiends!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight.. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food.

I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of allergies’. I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously misguided.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move.. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now... Will keep you posted.

SALES OPPORTUNITY FOR A PEOPLE PERSONAre you the sort of person that is warm, friendly and motivated? Are you a listener, someone who is

enthusiastic and willing to ‘pound the pavement’ in order to achieve a very important task.

An opportunity is available for someone to help out in sales with local Community Newspapers.

The ideal person would love to chat and certainly be community minded, have an understanding of local community as well as the needs of local small business. This Community Newspaper takes a lot of effort to get on the street, print, distribute, and would not survive without the support of our local advertisers. Hi, My Name is Caren HudsonAnd I’m a breast cancer survivor. I moved to Point Cook in January 2010 and have been hoping to connect with a support group. Unable to find one I decided to start my own. I have recently trained as a Community Liaison for BCNA (Breast Cancer Network Australia) and am looking for opportunities to support other women like myself.

I’m hoping the support group will be a place where survivors can meet to chat, share stories, connect and enjoy some fun activities like belly-dancing and ChiBall or whatever else we come up with.

So if you are interested in joining the group or just having a chat please contact me.

There is a lot of support on the BCNA website. It provides some very useful resources and information. An online network has just been introduced which is a fabulous tool for women and their families to connect with others affected by the disease.

I look forward to meeting you and sharing some time.

GARDENSInstead of continuing with my essays about the plants

that are featured in the Basaltica WaterWise Garden, I want to tell you about three interesting insects that we have seen in the garden.

Another interesting insect is the caterpillar of the Black and White Tiger Moth which has a tongue-twister of a scientific name - Spilosoma glatigny. This 40mm to 50mm dark brown caterpillar has a yellow stripe down its back that is particular prominent when it is young. Its body is densely covered with tufts of reddish-brown hairs that may cause irritation to the skin if you are foolish enough to handle it. You could find the caterpillar feeding on a range of low-growing introduced and native herbaceous plants, including the Hop Goodenia (Goodenia ovata) in the Basaltica WaterWise Garden.

LOCAL COMMUNITY TO BENEFIT FROM STATE GOVERNMENT AMBULANCE BOOST

Local Families will benefit from an $81 million commitment from the State Government to boost paramedic numbers and improve ambulance services.

Member for the Altona district, Jill Hennessy MP said the investment would allow the ambulance service in Werribee to be upgraded to provide 24 hour coverage.

“$2.04 million will be provided for a new station and 2 additional stretcher vehicles.

“Funding will be provided each year for 6 additional paramedics to operate this upgraded service.

“This investment will mean that our hard working paramedics continue to have the resources and support they need to respond to the record demand of callouts and emergency cases,” Ms Hennessy said.

“This investment builds on the State Government’s record of support for our ambulance services including more than tripling the funding for our ambulance services, investing in over 100 new or upgraded services and providing over 1200 extra operational paramedics,” Ms Hennessy said.
