Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
SA Power Networks
Incorporating the ElectraNet Touring Ensembles
Anyone who has ever taken a child to a concert knows the look of wonder that can come over their face when they hear the sounds of the orchestra. Music gives children an invaluable chance to imagine – and really there is no better gift you can give a child than the opportunity to dream!
Of course orchestral music comes in many forms and this year we are so pleased to be able to offer children, families and schools a varied program that includes Play School’s Jay Laga’aia, renowned animateur Paul Rissmann, a concert of SACE repertoire for high school students, and a performance of Roald Dahl’s Red Riding Hood.
Our popular ElectraNet Toe Tapping Toddlers and Edward and Edwina the Emus return this year, as well as a new session for small babies and mums-to-be.
This year, three of our Learning program concerts will be at Her Majesty’s Theatre, with some performances at the family-
friendly time of 6pm on a Friday; the proximity to the Adelaide Central Market makes it a great opportunity for a night out with the family. I do hope you and your school and family will enjoy all of our wonderful Learning concerts this year.
We are grateful to SA Power Networks for their continued sponsorship of our Learning program. Through their long-running commitment, we have been able to plan a few years out to ensure we can program the best possible concerts and events. Our touring and outreach program is sponsored by ElectraNet and we thank them for their ongoing commitment to the ASO and our objective of reaching as many children as possible.
We look forward to seeing you in 2013. Barbara George, Chief Executive, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
SA Power Networks takes great pride in supporting community involvement in the arts, particularly for young audiences.
Our support of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Learning program is a way for us to assist young people and their families to discover and learn from creative musical
activities, while experiencing the wonder of a live symphony orchestra. We urge everyone to take up the opportunity this fabulous program presents and make musical education an essential part of their learning experience in 2013.
Welcome

‘Music doesn’t describe, narrate or tell stories. What it does best is evoke, suggest and imply. It can open up the mind of a child in extraordinary ways. The abstraction of music allows them into a special world and a unique way of thinking.’ Richard Gill
‘To be capable, it is to have a mind of many wonders.’
In today’s media-driven society, the opportunity for young people to just sit, listen and think is rare - and is something an orchestral concert can provide.
Many studies worldwide have shown that we are born hardwired to respond to and enjoy music, and that involvement with music in childhood has beneficial effects on young people’s language learning, cognitive skills, emotional intelligence and social behaviour.
These are all wonderful benefits of music. But above all what we hope to provide with our concerts is a chance for young people and their families and teachers to just sit and listen, to step into the ‘special world’ of music and see what they find there. In other words, to have a mind of many wonders.
Why is music so important for young people?

For the first time ever with the ASO, best-selling children’s entertainer and star of Play School Jay Laga’aia will sing songs from his latest children’s album I Can Play Anything, with the accompaniment of a full symphony orchestra!
As well as performing some of his most popular songs, Jay will introduce children to the wonderful sounds of the orchestra with some well-known classical works.
Throughout the performance children will be encouraged to sing and dance – and best of all – to use their imaginations!

‘Music is human expression in sound. It is an integral part of life, transcending social and cultural boundaries and reflecting the health, vitality, and spiritual well-being of society.’ SACE subject outline – music
In 2013 we are giving students the chance to attend concerts featuring SACE Music and International Baccalaureate Music set works, giving students the invaluable opportunity to hear these works live.
These concerts will feature an in-depth discussion of these and other works, by renowned musicologist Christabel Saddler, and will be of interest to any high school students, not only those studying SACE and IB music.
We will be offering many associated activities around these concerts including opportunities for students to review the concerts and to interview musicians.
Teachers will be able to use our website and Learning Facebook page to access resources for these concerts, including recordings and teaching materials, and to allow their students to interact with the orchestra in the lead-up to the concerts.

‘I try to inspire young people to be composers and performers — by engaging their sense of creativity, that gives them a sense of ownership for what happens.' Paul Rissmann
Paul Rissmann - described as ‘the Jamie Oliver of music animateurs’ - is in demand worldwide for his inspiring children’s concerts and for getting children involved in the music.
These concerts are all about the beat, and will feature rhythmical classical works as well as Paul’s audience participation work Bamboozled which has been performed by 40,000 children worldwide.
Paul’s concert for lower primary students will feature an orchestral performance of The Lion Who Wanted to Love by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz, featuring beautiful images from the book projected on a screen.
To download the music for Bamboozled - and other information about the concert including teaching resources - please visit the ASO’s Learning website, aso.com.au/learning

Children and teachers who attended our Soundscapes concerts in 2012 were unanimous in their praise:
‘Wow! What a fabulous experience... little did I realise how amazingly wonderful the performance would be for our children. They were totally rapt by the sounds and sights of the musicians and conductor.’ Teacher, Grange Primary School
‘Dear Orchestra, I wish I could play the violin. I really liked the thunder. I liked the pictures and the music.’ Student, Sturt St Community School
Soundscapes features some of the most well-known classical works inspired by nature performed by the ASO, and stunning images of our environment on a big screen behind the orchestra.
We are very pleased to be able to present this concert for families as part of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Something on Saturday series in 2013.
Tickets will be on sale in March 2013.

This year for the first time we have a session specifically for babies up to 18 months, and pregnant mums and their partners. Studies indicate that babies can hear from around 22 weeks and are born with sound awareness. Singing and listening to music are great ways to bond with your baby - as well as stimulating their interest in language.
This concert will be all about singing to your baby – whether born or yet-to-be-born – and learning some easy songs which you’ll be able to sing at home. ASO musicians will play the songs for you, and babies can listen to them play some gentle classical music too.

Students will have an opportunity to see the ASO rehearse the first half of the program they are preparing for that evening’s performance, and watch how the conductor works with them to hone the performance.
These sessions are free for schools and can be booked by calling 8233 6253
