2001-02 Army Women’s Basketball

THE ARMY-NAVY SERIESArmy and Navy women basketball meet for the 37th time on the

hardwood this afternoon. Navy holds a 19-17 series advantage. TheBlack Knights won the first game against the Midshipmen 65-48 onJan. 18, 1980 in the consolation game of the Dartmouth-Burger KingInvitational. Army and Navy met once every season for the next 10years. In 1991-92 Army and Navy became Patriot League opponentsand have met twice every year except in 1991-92, 1995-96, 1996-97,1998-99 and 2000-01 when they have faced each other an additionaltime in the league tournament.

Navy won two out of three meetings against Army last season.Navy defeated the Black Knights 72-61 on Jan. 24 in Christl Arena.The Mids won the second meeting at home on Feb. 17, 81-59, in theannual “Star Match”. Army handed the Mids a season ending loss,73-61, in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament on March2, 2001.

SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTSThe Black Knights started the 2001-02 season on a three-game

losing skid. In the opening round of the Army Tip-Off Tournament,the Black Knights fell to Davidson 72-59 on Nov. 16. The Black Knightsfell the next night in the consolation round to Hofstra 64-61.

Army was defeated by Columbia, 64-61, on Nov. 20 at ChristlArena.

The Black Knights won its first game of the season at Indiana-Fort Wayne, 82-73 on Nov. 24. Army fell in a hard fought matchup todefending national champion No. 23 Notre Dame, 89-57, two dayslater at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind.

Traveling to Providence the weekend of Dec. 1, the Black Knightsfell to the host 65-56 in the opening round of the Brown Classic.Army lost its third straight game to Quinnipiac 61-57 in thetournament’s consolation game on Dec. 2.

Army fell in overtime to Albany 65-63 in their homecoming onDec. 5. The Black Knights snapped a four-game losing streak with a69-65 victory over Princeton on Dec. 8. Notching its first back-to-back wins of the season on Dec. 11, Army defeated St. Francis (N.Y.),83-64 at Christl Arena.

The Black Knights pushed past Sacramento State, 64-59, on NewYear’s Eve Day, in the first of a three game road stint. Army fell 66-52at Air Force on Jan. 3. The Black Knight’s Katie Macfarlane hit thegame-winning basket with 18 seconds remaining for the 71-69 vic-tory over Yale on Jan. 5.

Lehigh defeated Army 67-58 on Jan. 9 to open Patriot Leagueplay. Notching its first league win of the season, the Black Knightstraveled to league newcomer American, winning 78-69 on Jan. 12.Army fell at Bucknell 79-69 on Jan. 12 in a league game. Army’ssecond half surge put the Black Knights over Lafayette, 73-51, onJan, 19 at Christl Arena. Last time out, Army beat defending PatriotLeague Champion Holy Cross 68-67 on Jan. 23 at Christl Arena.

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMENNavy opened the 2001-02 season falling to the College of Charles-

ton 93-70 on Nov. 16. The Mids picked up its first win of the seasonat Jacksonville 75-65 on Nov. 18. Appalachian State opened Navy’shome schedule. The Midshipmen won a tight 72-71 contest on Nov.21.

The Mids dropped the first of four road games to San Diego State,73-69 on Nov. 25. Towson defeated the Mids on Nov. 28, 55-54. AtAlbany, Navy snapped a two game losing streak 69-55, two days later.The Mids defeated Marshall 71-61 on Dec. 5.

Maryland-Baltimore County fell 57-47 to Navy on Dec. 16. Navypicked up its four victory in a row 67-54 against Maryland-EasternShore on Dec. 19 in the first round of the Navy Classic. The nextday, the Mids won its own tournament against Winthrop 73-58.Navy beat Columbia 81-70 on Dec. 29.

Valparaiso handed the Midshipmen its first loss of the New Year71-64 on Jan. 2. Service Academy foe Air Force beat Navy 85-69 onJan. 5.

The Mids dropped its third consecutive game at Holy Cross 82-79 in overtime to begin Patriot League play on Jan. 8. Bucknelldefeated Navy 69-52 on Jan 12. On Jan. 16, The Midshipmen fell toLehigh in a tight 52-51 game. Navy fell to Colgate 84-53 on Jan. 19.

Navy snapped a six game losing streak with a 56-55 victory overLafayette last Saturday, Jan. 23.

Courtney Davidson leads the Mids averaging 18.9 ppg. and rankssecond in the Patriot League in scoring. Davidson is first in theleague in free throw percentage at 73.3 percent and is also rankedseventh in the latest NCAA national poll released Jan. 21. BryannaHerring is the top Navy rebounder averaging 6.8. rpg and sits infifth place in rebounding in the league.

LAST MEETING - MARCH 2, 2001, ARMY 73, NAVY 61Senior Therese Kelley scored 22 points and freshman Katie

Macfarlane added a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, sparkingNo. 4 seed Army to a 73-61 victory over No. 5 Navy in the openinground of the Patriot League Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The Black Knights struck for 10 straight points to ignite a 17-2run early in the second half. The decisive spurt turned a seven-pointdeficit into an eight-point lead (51-43) midway through the secondhalf. Macfarlane’s baseline jumper gave Army the lead for good (42-41) at 13:49. Kelley registered six of her 16 second-half points tospark that tear.

The Mids pulled to within one point at 55-54 on a three-pointplay by Jennifer Bombinski with 6:49 remaining, but the Black Knightsresponded with five straight points to regain control. Navy coulddraw no closer than four points the rest of the way as Army closedthe game with a 13-5 run.

Army did its damage at the free throw line down the stretch,converting 11 of 12 free throw opportunities during the final 1:57.Kelley led the charge, hitting all six of her charity tosses to close thegame.

The decision marked Army’s second opening-round Patriot Leaguetourney win in the last seven years. It also stands as only the thirdtime in the 11-year history of the league that the No. 4 seed hasdefeated the No. 5 seed. Army has been the winner in all three ofthose triumphs.

In improving its overall record to 19-9, the Black Knights con-tinue to author one of the nation’s most prolific regular-season turn-arounds this season. Army, which has already posted its highest wintotal since the 1990-91 campaign, finished 9-18 a year ago. The 10-game turnaround rates as the best in school history.

In the early going on Friday, Army jumped out to a 9-3 lead fiveminutes into the game. Navy, which defeated the Black Knights twiceduring regular-season play, fought its way back behind an 11-0 surge.Army regained the lead at 27-26 on Macfarlane’s jumper with 2:50left, capping seven consecutive points by the Black Knights. TheMids held a 35-32 lead at intermission, then pulled out to their larg-est lead at 41-34 four minutes into the second half.

Macfarlane followed with an inside bucket, touching off Army’sgame-winning onslaught. Army’s hawking defense limited Navy tojust one field goal across a seven-minute span to key the attack.

PATRIOT LEAGUE STATISTICS

Hot-shooting Army posted a 57.1 field goal percentage duringthe second stanza, knocking down 12 of 21 shots from the floor.Navy, meanwhile, struggled with its shooting during the same pe-riod, connected on just 9 of 39 field goal attempts (.231) during thefinal 20 minutes. Additionally, Army dominated the battle of theboards, outrebounding its arch rival by a whooping 46-30 margin.

Kelley finished 7 of 10 from the field and hit on all eight of herfree throw chances. Macfarlane closed 6 of 9 from the floor en routeto establishing a new career scoring standard. She added a game-high12 rebounds in registering her eighth career double-double.

BLACK KNIGHTS BEAT HOLY CROSS FOR THIRD LEAGUE WINArmy beat defending Patriot League Champion Holy Cross 68-67

Wednesday night for its third Patriot League win of the season. TheBlack Knights first league win came at the hands of league new-comer American, 78-69, on Jan. 12. Army used a second-half surgeto top Lafayette 73-51 on Jan. 19 for its second league victory of theseason. The Black Knights’ two losses came at the hands of Lehigh,67-58, and Bucknell, 79-69.

REJERA DOES IT AGAINFreshman Rejera Arnold came off the bench in the opening min-

utes of the Holy Cross game to show just what she is made of. Ar-nold netted 11 points and tied her career high in scoring set lastgame against Lafayette in 25 minutes on the hardwood. Shooting50.0 percent from the floor, Arnold hit one shot from behind the arcand was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

CANELLI STATUS DAY-TO-DAYSenior guard Christina Canelli injured the tendons in her ankle

in practice on Friday, Jan. 18. Canelli is the teams fifth leading scoreraveraging 6.8 ppg. and has missed both the Lafayette and Holy Crossgames. Her status is day-to-day.

CAREER NIGHTJunior Amy Saal bettered her career high in scoring with 16

points as she led all scorers against Lafayette on Jan. 19. Saal’s recordof 14 points was originally set during her plebe season. She hasequaled the number on five other occasions, including three timesthis season. Saal had 14 points against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Dec. 11,at American on Jan. 12, and at Bucknell on Jan. 16. Saal is averag-ing 8.1 ppg. and is ranked 29th in the Patriot League.

SENSATIONAL SAALJunior Amy Saal set her second personal record on Jan. 19 against

Lafayette grabbing 13 rebounds. Saal completed her first double-doubleof the season and second of her career against Lafayette with her 16points and 13 boards. Saal’s first double-double came during herplebe season.

MOVING UP ON ANOTHER RECORDKatie Macfarlane continues to make a dramatic impact in the

Army record book. Macfarlane made six shots from the foul lineagainst Holy Cross on Jan. 22 and passed Karin Gventer at 184 ca-reer free throws. The sophomore’s 188 free throws made in 48 gamesplayed, puts her in 12th place in the Army career free throw leaders.Macfarlane has attempted 242 making 77.7 percent of her shots fromthe charity stripe. With ten more free throws made, Macfarlane willtie Melody Smith with 198 in 11th place. The record is 286 set by PatWalter in 1982.

REJERA COMES UP BIG OFF THE BENCHPlebe Rejera Arnold came off the bench to register a perfect game against

Lafayette on Jan. 19. Arnold went 4-for-4 from the floor including one shotfrom behind the three-point arc and was perfect from the charity stripeshooting 2-for-2, setting a career high with 11 points. Arnold has seenmore playing time in recent games. In the last three games Arnold hasaveraged 22.7 mpg.

ARMY IS ACCURATEThe Black Knights’ 46.2 field goal percentage leads the Patriot League

in conference games according to the Jan. 24 league release. In five leaguecontests, Army has made 126 of its 273 attempts.

ARMY THREE-POINT SHOOTING, ONE OF THE NATIONS BESTAfter 17 games this season, Army has become a three-point shooting

threat making 38.5 percent of its shots. Netting 57 of 148 three-pointers,Army ranks 23rd nationally as of the Jan. 21 NCAA release.

LEAGUE LEADERSophomore Katie Macfarlane is the lone Patriot League player to be

averaging a double-double this season. The forward is averaging 18.1 ppg.and 10.3 rpg. this season.

Macfarlane also sits among the league leaders in some other catego-ries. In rebounding, Macfarlane has led the Patriot League since the start ofthe season. With 7.61 defensive rpg., Macfarlane sits in second place. Inoffensive rebounding, Macfarlane stands in second place with 2.67 rpg.

AWESOME AMYJunior guard Amy Saal has come into her own in the last nine games. Since

coming back from the finals and the holiday break, Saal has averaged 10.1 ppg.,becoming Army’s fourth leading scorer with 8.1 ppg. for the season. Last weekSaal broke into the scoring leaders in the Patriot League and is sitting in 29thplace. Saal stands in 18th place with 11.8 ppg. in five league contests (1/24).

Making an impact on the defensive side of the ball, Saal has averaged 6.3rpg. in the last eight games. Overall, Saal averages 4.4 rpg.

BUCHHOLZ OFF THE BENCHPlebe Amanda Buchholz has seen increasing minutes off the bench. The

reserve forward has played in six of the last eight games dating back to theSacramento State victory. Buchholz made her collegiate debut in the secondgame of the season against Hofstra and has seen action in 10 games this year.She is averaging 1.1 ppg. and 1.4 rpg in the post position.

IN THE NEIGHBORHOODThe Army roster features two standout high school forwards from the Buf-

falo, N.Y. area in sophomore Katie Macfarlane and freshman Lindsay Brent.Macfarlane, a Clarence, N.Y. native, and Brent, from Williamsville, N.Y., are nostrangers to each other. Both played on the Western New York regional team atthe Empire State Games. The pair also share some of the same honors such as;first-team All-Western New York selection and were named an All-Bee’s first-team selection as seniors.

MCKINNON PROVIDES QUALITY TIME IN THE POSTJunior Molly McKinnon has come off the bench to give Army solid minutes

in the post position. The 6-0” Black Knights has played in all but the Bucknellgame this season and has seen nine starts at forward. McKinnon is the sixthleading scorer for the Black Knights at 4.9 ppg., averaging 1.4 more pointsthan last season. McKinnon is averaging 2.1 rpg. this season.

HALEY STARTS AT THE POINTSophomore Haley Edwards joined the ranks of the starting lineup on Dec. 8

against Princeton. Since Edwards has started at the point guard position, Armyhas won six out of nine games. In the span, Edwards has recorded career highsin scoring (9) against St. Francis, rebounding (4) in both the St. Francis (N.Y.)and Lehigh contests and assists (8) in the win at Yale.

BRENT LEADS THE PLEBESLindsay Brent has come into her own and is leading all plebe players aver-

aging 3.4 ppg. and 1.8 rpg. Brent has come off the bench to add valuable timeon the floor averaging 10.0 mpg. in 17 appearance this season.

HELU BREAKS INSenior guard-forward Halaevalu Helu took sole possession of 25th place on

Army’s career scoring list with 705 points against American. Coming into thegame, Helu was tied with Karin Gventer with 700 career points. To move up inthe standings, Helu, who has 735 career points, needs eight points to over takeAndrienne Quimby who sits in 24th at 742 points. The record was set duringthe 1983-84 season by Melody Smith and is 1422 points.

TURNING IT AROUNDThe Black Knights got off to a slow start to start the season but

have returned to their winning ways, victorious in six out of their lastnine games, stemming back to the Princeton game on Dec. 8. Armydefeated the Tigers 69-65 and St. Francis (N.Y.), 83-64, before breakingfor finals and the holidays. Traveling to Sacramento State on NewYear’s day, Army picked up its third win in a row 64-59. On Jan. 5, theBlack Knights defeated Yale in the final seconds, 71-69. On Jan. 12 theBlack Knights won its first Patriot League game over league new-comer American 78-69. Army won its second league game againstLafayette 73-51 on Jan. 19. The Black Knights won its third leaguegame defeating defending Patriot League Champion Holy Cross 68-67on Jan. 22. In the span, Army’s losses came at Air Force on Jan. 3 (77-52) to Lehigh on Jan. 9 (67-58) and at Bucknell on Jan. 16 (79-69).

ARMY TO MAKE WBNR AND WLNA DEBUTThe Army women’s basketball team will make its debut on WBNR

and WLNA, the flagship of Black Knight football and men’s basketballtoday. Calling the game will be Casey Kahler, Army’s director of broad-casting, and Bob Beretta, assistant athletic director for media rela-tions, will add the color commentary.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE SHOWKatie Macfarlane has had dynamic efforts in scoring and rebound-

ing with 10 double-doubles in 18 games this season, setting a careerhigh mark. Last season, the sophomore forward had seven double-doubles for the season.

Opening the season against Davidson, Macfarlane scored 14 pointsand set a then career high in rebounding with 17. Macfarlane set apersonal high in scoring with 26 and pulled down 12 boards againstColumbia. The forward collected her third double-double on 18 pointsand 10 rebounds at IPFW. At the Brown Classic, Macfarlane capturedtwo doubles-doubles with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the Browngame and 13 points and 11 boards against Quinnipiac. Macfarlanebettered her personal best in scoring with 27 points and added 14rebounds, both team highs on Dec. 5 against Albany. In the game

against Princeton, Macfarlane notched her seventh double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.Macfarlane notched her eighth double-double showing of22 points and 13 rebounds on New Year’s Eve day.Macfarlane had 18 points and 11 boards at Air Force.Macfarlane had 15 points and 10 rebounds to compete her10th double-double of the season and 17th of her careeragainst Lafayette on Jan. 19.

HEAD COACH SHERRI ABBEY-NOWATZKISherri Abbey-Nowatzki enters her fourth year at the

helm of the Black Knight program. At Army, Abbey-Nowatzki has posted a 42-59 record in her tenure. In fiveyears of coaching, Abbey-Nowatzki holds a career record of61-87 after spending one year at D’Youville and Keuka Col-leges. Slowly rebuilding the Black Knights’ program sincearriving on post, Army was cited last season as having oneof the best turnarounds at the Division I level after postinga 19-10 record.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARSThe Army women’s basketball team enters its 25th sea-

son as a varsity sport. The Black Knights began as the firstvarsity women’s sport in 1977-78 after spending the previ-ous season as a club team. In its tenure, the women’s bas-ketball team has compiled a 356-343 record.

LAST OUTINGKatie Macfarlane’s 22 points paved the way as the Army

women’s basketball team defeated defending Patriot LeagueChampion Holy Cross in a spirited 68-67 victory at ChristlArena in West Point, N.Y.

Army (8-10, 3-2 Patriot League) was outscored by HolyCross (12-6, 3-2 Patriot League) 41-39 in the second half butnever trailed. The Crusaders opened the half strongly, pull-ing within one point (19-18) on two Katie O’Keefe foul shots10 seconds into the half. The Black Knights then used a 14-4 run to take what would prove to be the largest lead of the

night, 43-32, at 14:17.Holy Cross pulled to within one point again at 45-44

with 8:42 left in regulation before Halaevalu Helu converteda three-point play to push the lead to 48-44 with 8:19 to go.

Army increased its lead to 10 points (64-54) on a three-pointer by Rejera Arnold with 1:36 left in the game. Missedfree throws by the Black Knights down the stretch enabledHoly Cross to slip back into the contest. Powered by thosemisses, the Crusaders went on a 13-4 run to cut the marginto one point with just under two seconds remaining in thegame. With one last chance to win, Holy Cross was unableto get off a final shot and Army preserved the victory.

The opening half saw four ties and two lead changes.Army began the game with four quick points from Macfarlane.The first tie of the game came at 16:22 (6-6). The Crusaderswent on to score the next nine points to take their largestlead of the game at 19-14 with 6:30 left. Army battled back,though, scoring five consecutive points to tie the score at19-19 with 5:16 remaining until the break.

The Black Knights forged back ahead to take the advan-tage (23-21) with just under three minutes to go until half-time and led 29-26 at the intermission.

The win was the second consecutive victory for the BlackKnights over the Crusaders at home in Christl Arena. Armydefeated Holy Cross last season at home, 87-71, on Feb. 24,2001.

With the victory, Army also handed Holy Cross its sec-ond straight loss in Patriot League play. Only once before,during 1991-92 season, has Holy Cross suffered two con-secutive losses in league play. During that year, the Crusad-ers lost to Lafayette (55-32) and Bucknell (72-66).

Macfarlane led all players with her 22 points. The standoutsophomore narrowly missed her 11th double-double of theseason, pulling down a team-high nine boards. Helu added12 points for the Black Knights. Arnold rounded out Armyplayers in double figures with 11 points off the bench, tyingher career high set last game against Lafayette.

O’Keefe led the Crusaders with 19 points. Also scoringin double digits for Holy Cross were Maggie Fontana andAmanda Abraham with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

ing performances in the last few gamesaveraging 9.9 ppg. and 4.9 rpg. Over-all, Helu is averaging 8.3 ppg., thirdon the team, and 4.6 rpg., second onthe team, for the season. In the PatriotLeague standings (as of Jan. 24), Heluranks fifth place in field goal percent-age with .532.

SCORING MACHINEKatie Macfarlane bettered her per-

sonal best in scoring with 27 points inthe Albany game on Dec. 5. Originally,Macfarlane set her career mark in justthe third game of the season when shescored 26 points against Columbia onNov. 20.

Macfarlane’s 27 points is tied for22nd place for a Black Knight in theall-time record book for an individualgame high in scoring. Macfarlane alsosits tied in 25th place with her 26points showing. Scoring 20 or morepoints only twice before this season,Macfarlane’s previous high coming intothe season was 21 points set againstNavy in the Patriot League Tournamenton Mar. 3, 2001.

This season, Macfarlane has 20 ormore points in five games. On Dec. 31against Sacramento State Macfarlanehad 22 points. Macfarlane 24 points inthe outing at Yale on Jan. 5. Macfarlanescored a game-high 22 points againstHoly Cross to tally her fifth 20 or morepoint game.

Macfarlane is currently rankedthird in the league standings in scor-ing averaging 18.1 ppg., according tothe Jan. 24 Patriot League release.

MAGNIFICENT MACFARLANESophomore Katie Macfarlane set a

career high with 17 rebounds in thefirst game of the season on Nov. 16against Davidson. The mark betters herprevious high of 15 by two and is tiedfor 16th place with four others for re-bounds in one game. The record, setby Pam Pearson on Jan. 2, 1984 againstSt. Francis-Illinois, is 22 boards.

Macfarlane is averaging 10.4 rpg.for the season and stands in first place

in rebounding in the Patriot Leaguestandings (1/24).

MACFARLANE DOES IT AGAINFor the second time in two weeks,

sophomore forward Katie Macfarlanewas named Patriot League “Player ofthe Week” on Dec. 17. Macfarlane ledthe team in scoring with 16 points andwas second in rebounding with sevenboards.

On Dec. 9, Macfarlane earned hersecond league honor after a careerweek. Macfarlane set personal bestswith 27 points and six assists. She alsonotched her sixth and seventh double-double of the season with 27 points and14 boards in the Albany overtime lossand 18 points and 16 boards in the winover Princeton.

On Nov. 25., after averaging 22.0ppg. and 11.0 rpg. for the week,Macfarlane earned her first weekly topleague honor.

GASSMAN FINES HER NICHEIn just the fourth game this sea-

son, junior Christine Gassman becom-ing one of the Black Knights three-pointscoring threats. Gassman went 4 for 5against Indiana-Fort Wayne and in thePrinceton game, Gassman went 4 for 5for the second time this season.Gassman’s career high in three-point-ers with five made came in the Lehighgame on Jan. 9. The mark tied CarrieGranigher and Megan Dempsey for theschool individual record.

Gassman’s three-point shootingpercentage has improved to .433 (29-67) on the season, third in the league.With 29 three-point field goals made,Gassman is in 10th in the league with1.61 three-pointers per game accord-ing to the Jan. 24 Patriot League re-lease.

In double figures eight times thisseason, Gassman led all Black Knightsfour times in scoring, most recentlyagainst Lehigh in the opening PatriotLeague game on Jan. 9 with 19 points.Against Princeton Gassman had 20points, one shy of her personal best onDec. 8. Gassman also lead all BlackKnights in scoring against Hofstra and

Quinnipiac. At Indiana-Fort Wayne,Gassman scored all of her 16 points,for a then season high, in the first halfbefore suffering from foul trouble.Against the Braves in the consolationround of the Brown Classic, Gassmantied her season high of 16 points. BRILLIANT BRENTPlebe Lindsay Brent has come into

In 26 minutes of game time,Brent was the second-leading scorerand one of two Black Knights in doubledigits against Albany on Dec. 5 with aseason high 16 points. Senior Halaevalu Helu and sopho-more Katie Macfarlane return to the2001-02 Black Knight squad as the onlytwo returning starters. Averaging al-most 25 minutes of playing time,Macfarlane was the team leader in re-bounding at 8.1 rpg. and was secondin scoring averaging 11.7 ppg. Helu re-turns as the second-leading scorer, be-hind Macfarlane, at 7.8 ppg.

Missing from this year’s squad willbe starters Therese Kelley, Dawn Hal-faker and Megan Dempsey who aver-aged almost 30 minutes of court time.

Bucknell is sec-ond, followed by Lehigh in third andPatriot League newcomer American ispredicted to finish just above the BlackKnights in fourth place. Navy, Colgateand Lafayette round out the poll insixth, seventh and eighth places, re-spectively.

OLDIES BUT GOODIESON THE RADIO

For the second year in a row theArmy women’s basketball program willappear on a commercial station whenWBNR Radio, the flagship station of theBlack Knights’ football and men’s bas-ketball radio networks, broadcaststhree regular-season games and the Pa-triot League Tournament. Included inthe package is the Army-Navy “Trophy”game on the homefront (Jan. 26th), theArmy-Navy game in Annapolis, Md.(Feb. 23rd), and Army’s game againstHoly Cross in Worcester, Mass. (Feb.16 th). The Patriot League Tournamentwill take place in Upper Marlboro, Md.,Friday, Mar. 1 and Sunday, Mar. 3. Allthree games and the league tournamentwill be heard on both WBNR (1260-AM)and WLNA (1420-AM).

Casey Kahler, Army’s director ofbroadcasting, will call play-by-play ac-tion. Kahler is the sideline reporter andproducer for the football network inthe fall.

LAST SEASONArmy recorded one of the best

turnarounds in Division I women’s bas-ketball last year. The Black Knights be-gan the 2000-01 season with a 4-0

record, their best start in 15 years. Af-ter capturing their own tournament forthe first time in the program’s history,the team went on to post a 15-gamemark of 13-2, its best at the Division Ilevel.

The Black Knights were the lonePatriot League team to beat defendingchampion Holy Cross, 87-71, in thehome season finale finishing the sea-son with a 10-2 record at Christl Arena.The victory helped capture the fourthseed at the Patriot League tournamentwhere the Black Knights beat arch-ri-val Navy 73-61 in the quarterfinalround after dropping the previous tworegular-season meetings.

Army advanced to the league’ssemifinal round for the fifth time inschool history, where it was defeated70-50 by eventual champion HolyCross.

Finishing the season with a 19-10mark, Army posted the most wins sincerecording 20 victories in 1990-91, andjust the seventh time in school historythat it compiled 19 or more wins in aseason.

Senior Therese Kelley collectedleague honors becoming only the sec-ond Army player to be selected a two-time Patriot League first-team pick, andthe 11th Black Knight to score 1,000points and also grab 500 rebounds. Alsohonored by the league, freshman KatieMacfarlane was chosen to the league’ssecond unit and rookie team after post-ing the second best mark by an Armyfreshman in scoring 340 points andgrabbing 236 rebounds. Senior MeganDempsey closed out her career as theseason and career leader in three-pointshooting.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Katie Macfarlane collecteda career high 17 rebounds, but it was not enoughto hold off Davidson as Army’s women’s basket-ball team fell 72-58 in the opening round of theArmy Tip-Off Tournament tonight at Christl Arenain West Point, N.Y.

Macfarlane registered a double-double, theeighth of her career, when she collected 14 pointsto go with her 17 boards. In addition, Macfarlanetied the record for individual rebounds in an Armytournament game. The record was originally seton Nov. 28, 1998 by Tamika Bates of Hofstra.

Jumping out to an early lead on a HalauvaluHelu layup at 19:44, the Black Knights raced to a14-3 advantage eight minutes into the game. TheWildcats struggled for most of the half but cameback to take their first lead of the night with 56seconds remaining before the break on a bucketby Courtney Laird.

The Black Knights went on to score three morepoints before the intermission when ChristineGassman converted her first attempt from behindthe arc giving Army a 33-29 lead heading into thelocker room.

After broadening their lead to 40-32, the BlackKnights were then outscored 14-7, leading to theWildcats’ second lead of the game at 13:09. David-son would not relinquish the lead, authoring a 19-10 run that moved the score to 67-57 with 1:01remaining in the game.

Christina Canelli led the scoring for Army, reg-istering 15 points. Rounding out the Black Knightsin double figures was Molly McKinnon with 12points. For the Wildcats Janna Magette and AshleyHallsted led the team with 14 points apiece andMeghan Bryant chipped in 13 points and 10 re-bounds for the other double-double on the day.

West Point, N.Y. - Hofstra used 22 points fromJen Brickey to defeat Army 68-51 in the consola-tion round of the Army Tip-Off Tournament in WestPoint, N.Y.

Swapping baskets for most on the first half,Hofstra took the initial lead. Army tied the game(11-11) for the first time at 11:49 before pullingahead 13-11 at 11:18 on a basket from HalaevaluHelu.

Over the next 6:54, the two teams exchangedleads and tied the game four times before Hofsta(1-1) took the lead for good with 4:37 remaininguntil the half. The Pride used a 14-6 spurt to headinto the locker room with a 38-27 advantage.

In the opening 8:27 of the second half, Hofstraoutscored Army 21-6 to take a 16-point lead (49-33). Down by as much as 24, the Black Knightscame as close as 15 points (4:11) at 4:11.

Christine Gassman led all Black Knights with12 points. Also in double figures Katie Macfarlaneand Helu scored 10 each. Macfarlane grabbed ateam-high five boards.

Brickley led all Hofstra players with 22 points.Rume Pela chipped in 17 points and Kimberly Cokeadded 10 for Hofstra. Coke also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

With the win Hofstra (2-0) improves their win-ning streak over the Black Knights to two. ThePride’s last win against Army (0-2) came in theconsolation game of the West Point Tournamenton Nov. 29, 1998.

Coming down to the wire in the championshipgame of the Army Tip-Off Tournament, Pennsyl-vania beat Davidson 75-70.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Columbia used 19 pointsfrom Megan O'Neill to defeat Army 64-61 in awomen's basketball game at Christl Arena in WestPoint, N.Y.

Tied at 59 with seven seconds to go, Columbia(1-2) used a two-pointer from O'Neill and a freethrow off a foul by Katie Macfarlane to take whatwould prove to be the final three points of thegame.

Battling to four ties and three lead changes inthe second half and Army (0-3) down by three, theBlack Knights had one final chance to the tie thegame as the clock wound down, but was unable toget a shot off as the Lions preserved the victory.

The Black Knights, controlling most of thegame, took its largest lead of the day (11) with16:09 remaining in the second stanza on aMacfarlane two-pointer, but were unable to holdoff the Lions attack. Columbia then went on a 13to 2 run to tie the game (43) at the 11:32 mark.The two teams continued to battle for the remain-der of the game coming down to the final seconds.

Sophomore Katie Macfarlane scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Black Knights. Adding12 rebounds, Macfarlane had her second double-double of the season and the ninth of her career.

For Columbia Susan Kern chipped in 12 pointsfor the only other Lion in double figures. KatieDay led Columbia with five boards.

Shooting 46.6 percent to Columbia's 36.9 per-cent for the game, Army also held a 42-33 advan-tage in rebounding but suffered with 50.0 percentshooting from the charity strip.

Katie Macfarlane scored a team high 18 pointsand Christine Gassman added 16 as the Armywomen’s basketball team edged out Indiana-FortWayne 82-73 In Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Black Knights used nine free throwsdown the stretch to preserve their first victoryof the season. Halaevalu Helu scored eight ofher 11 points in the final 4:09 of the game.

Battling back and forth from the start of thegame, Army (1-3) and IPFW (1-2) exchanged thelead six times and held six ties before the BlackKnights took the lead (25-24) at 9:02. The BlackKnights went on to outscore the Mastrodons14-2 to take their largest lead of the game (13)with 5:27 remaining.

The Black Knights held a 43-37 advantage atthe intermission behind 83.3 percent shootingfrom behind the three-point arc. Army outshotIPFW 64.3 percent to 36.8 percent in theopening half.

To open the second half Army pushed theirlead to eight at 17:41 (47-39) before theMastrodons attempted their comeback to causethe sixth tie of the game at 53 with 13:02remaining in regulation. Retaking the lead on aMacfarlane jumper, the Black Knights neverallowed the Mastrodons to regain the lead.

Macfarlane added a team high ten reboundsfor her third double-double of the season andtenth of her career.

Jacqueline Batteast had 18 points and 12 re-bounds, and Le’Tania Severe added 13 points tolead No. 23 Notre Dame to an 89-57 victory overArmy.

Alicia Ratay added 12 points, making 4 of 6shots from 3-point range in the first half, to helpkey a 15-2 run as the Irish (2-2) took controlmidway through the first half. Army (1-4) nevermounted a challenge.

Katie Macfarlane led the Black Knights with13 points and eight rebounds. Christina Canelliadded 11 points.

The Irish, who dropped the previous twogames, were never in danger of losing threestraight. Army went on an 8-0 run to tie it at 18when Amy Saal converted a three-point play andscored inside, and Canelli hit a 3-pointer.

But Ratay hit back-to-back 3-pointers to sparka 15-2 run that gave the Irish a 33-20. She hither fourth 3-pointer at 5:38.

The Irish led 47-31 at halftime, their mostpoints in a half this season.

Notre Dame opened a 75-49 lead in the secondhalf when Allison Bustamante scored with 5:56left, leading Irish coach Muffet McGraw to pullthe starters.

Rada Pavichevich scored a game high 17 pointsto lead Brown over Army, 65-56, in the first roundof the Brown Classic in Providence, R.I.

The fourth meeting of the two, Army last fell toBrown, 77-59, on Dec. 6, 1997 in the openinground of the Brown Classic.

Opening up to an early lead, the Bears rattledoff the first four points. Molly McKinnon stole theball from Bear’s Stephanie Bruce and KatieMacfarlane fed the ball to Amy Saal to take Army’sfirst lead of the half, 7-6, at 17:12.

Going on an 11-2 run over the next 2:11, Brown(3-3) lead by as much as eight points twice. Army(1-5), making a run of its own, closed the gap toone twice before taking its second lead of the dayon a Christina Canelli layup at 3:24 (29-28). Re-gaining the advantage, Brown led 35-30 at thehalf.

Never leading by more than four, Brown con-trolled most of the second half. The Black Knights’used a shot by Canelli from behind the arc to pushahead 48-47 with 9:06 remaining in the game.

Falling behind by as much as four again, Canellihit another three-pointer with 2:50 left to take theBlack Knights final lead (57-56). Brown closed thegame with 11-0 run for the victory.

Katie Macfarlane scored 16 points and added13 boards for her fourth double-double of the sea-son, 12th of her career. Other Black Knights indouble figures Christine Gassman scored 14 pointsand Canelli chipped in 10.

For Brown Nyema Mitchell had 15 points andBruce had 14.

Army’s Christine Gassman led all scorers butit was not enough as the Black Knight’s fell 61-57 to Quinnipiac in the consolation game ofBrown Classic.

A close contest throughout, the game featured12 lead changes and eight ties. Holding the ad-vantage for most of the first half, Army (1-6) led byas much as five points on two Katie Macfarlanefree throws with 26 second remaining in the half.The clock winding down, Army held a 33-28 ad-vantage at the half.

Opening the half with seven straight points,Quinnipiac (3-3) took the lead at 17:12 (35-33).Able to tie the game four times, Army was unableto regain control.

The only other Black Knight in double digits,Macfarlane captured her fifth double-double of theseason with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Two as-sists shy of her career mark, Halaevalu Helu dishedout six assists. Gassman’s 16 points ties her sea-son high set during the Davidson game on Nov.14.

For the Braves, Theresa Sanchez had a teamhigh of 14 points. Katie Caputi added 12 pointsand Sara Esidore had 10.

The Black Knights out rebounded the Braves45-25 for the game.

Katie Macfarlane had a career high 27 pointsas the Black Knights fell to Albany, 65-63, in over-time, at Christl Arena.

Jumping out to an early lead, the Great Danesused six points from Danielle Hutcheson to take a12-point lead at 16:11. The advantage would proveto be the largest of the game.

Making a run of their own, the Black Knightsused four points from Lindsay Brent, KatieMacfarlane and Molly McKinnon and two points fromHalaevalu Helu to come within one point (15-14)of the Great Dane at 8:21.

Continuing on its surge, Army (1-7) took itsfirst lead of the day, 21-20, at 5:26 on a Macfarlanethree pointer. Taking a 12-8 advantage over the fi-nal 5:12 of the half, Albany (1-4) headed into thelocker room with a 32-29 advantage.

Battling for the lead, the Black Knights camewith one point three times in the second stanzabefore taking its second lead of the day, 54-53, on aMacfarlane shot at 3:43. Army was ahead by as muchas five points until the visitors tied the game at 58with 1:03 remaining in regulation.

Neither team was able to score in the remain-ing minute, and for the first time this season forboth teams, the game headed into overtime.

Army’s Helu score first in the extra sessionbut Sarah Sweetland tied the game once more at 60with 3:58 remaining. Christina Canelli pushed theBlack Knights ahead by three (63-60) on a twopointer and the extra free throw at 3:30. Christine Gassman score a team high 20 pointsas the Army women’s basketball team snapped afour-game losing skid when they squeaked byPrinceton 69-65 at Christl Arena in West Point, N.Y.

Coming as close as one-point twice in the sec-ond half, Army (2-7) held off the Princeton (4-3)threat. With six second remaining, Christina Canellimade a clutch free throw to give the Black Knightsa two-possession advantage.

Midway into the second half the Black Knightsused six points from Katie Macfarlane on an 8-0run to take a 10 point lead, 62-52, at 5:24. Stretch-ing its lead to as much as 11 points with 2:29 re-maining, the Black Knights used its strong ballhandling skills to ward of the strong Tiger defense.

Gassman scored a team-high 20-points, a sea-son high and one point shy of her personal best.Macfarlane added 18 points and was one board shyof her career mark grabbing 16 rebounds. Thedouble-double was the seventh of the season forMacfarlane and tied last year’s mark of seven double-double for her plebe year.

The Black Knights opened the game with a quick7-0 run. Fighting back, the Tigers used a 17-9 runto take its first lead of the day, 17-16 at 10:02.Responding, Army used two points from four dif-ferent players to take the largest lead of the half,25-17, at 8:01.

The remaining eight minutes of the half saw twolead changes and two ties before Army used fourpoints from both Halaevalu Helu and ShavonneHolden down the stretch to push ahead 41-35 atthe half.

Scoring a game high of 25 points was Princeton’sKelly Schaeffer. Schaeffer also pulled down a teamhigh six boards.

The Army women’s basketball team used 16points from Katie Macfarlane to win its first back-to-back games of the season, as it defeated St.Francis (N.Y.) 83-64 in West Point, N.Y.

St. Francis (1-5) opened the game with a three-pointer from Kia Nealy at 19:07. Army (3-7) foughtright back with nine straight points, five from KatieMacfarlane, to take a 9-3 advantage at 14:58.

The Black Knights extended its lead to as muchas seven points (12-5) at 13:58. Going on a 9-2run, the Terriers retook, what would be their finallead of the game, 15-14, at 11:12.

The Black Knights dominated the remainder ofthe first half, before St. Francis went on a 7-1 runin the final 2:53 and pull as close as three points(37-34) at the intermission.

In the opening minutes of the second half, theTerriers pulled as close as one point but were un-able to hold off the Black Knights. Going on a 8-0run in a span of 1:10, Army used three points fromChristine Gassman and Haley Edwards and twopoints from Macfarlane to take a 47-38 lead (16:27).

With 12:52 remaining in the game, MollyMcKinnon, who netted a season high 14 points,pushed the Black Knights to a double figure advan-tage, 53-42. Despite facing a press defense, Armywould hold a double-digit advantage the rest of theway. A two pointer with 37 seconds remaining gavethe Black Knights its largest lead of the day with19 (81-62).

Also having season highs, Amy Saal score 14points and Shavonne Holden pulled down a teamhigh nine rebounds. Macfarlane scored a team-high18-points for the Black Knights in just 23 minutesof play.

Scoring only 24 points in the second half, Armywas held without any score for the first 5:52 of thesecond half when Macfarlane broke the BlackKnights longest stretch of the season without ascore. In the span the Hornets went on a 7-0 run topull within three points of the Black Knights.

Using a run of its own (7-1), Army pushed thescore to 47-38 with 9:10 remaining in the game.Continuing on its run, Army scored nine of the next13 points to take the largest lead of the game at 14(42-56) at 4:55.

To close the game the Hornets pushed as closeas five points (64-59) with one second remainingin regulation.

Falling down by as much as nine points threetimes, the Black Knights trailed the Bulldogs formost of the second half. With 7:15 remaining, Chris-tine Gassman hit a three pointer to begin the Armycomeback.

With 2:12 remaining in the ballgame, HalaevaluHelu connected on a jumper to tie the score at 65.Yale’s Tory Mauseth made one free throw to cut theArmy lead in half with one minute left butMacfarlane converted on two shots from the char-ity strip with 45 seconds left to push Army’s leadto three. Army was ahead until Mauseth hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 69 with 35 seconds lefton the clock.

Macfarlane’s jumper with 18 seconds left gaveArmy (5-8) the final lead. Yale (6-6) had two moreattempts to tie the game but was unable to do so.

To open the game, Helu scored the first basketof the day at 18:50. Dominating most of the firsthalf, Army led by as much as 14 points twice. Yaleused a 9-0 run in the final 2:15 of the half to comeas close as one, 39-38, heading in to the lockerroom.

Christine Gassman scored a game high 19points as the Army women’s basketball team fellin its Patriot League opener to Lehigh at ChristlArena in West Point, N.Y.

Senior captain Halaevalu Helu’s four pointsbreaks into the top 25 all-time scoring list as sheties Karin Gventer in 25th place with 700 careerpoints. In rebounding, Helu’s eight boards movesher into 16th place with 451.

To start the game, Army (5-9, 0-1) and Lehigh(5-9, 1-0) swapped baskets until the Black Knightsscored seven unanswered points to take the lead,14-7 at 11:33. This would proved to be their larg-est lead of the game. Fighting back the MountainHawks tied the game at 18 with 5:53 left until thehalf.

The remaining minutes of the first half saw threelead changes and four ties as the two teams headedinto the half deadlocked at 30.

To open the second half, Lehigh went on an 18-8 run taking a ten-point lead at 14:48. Scoring fiveof the next seven points, the Mountain Hawks tookwhat would prove to be its largest lead of the day,53-42 at 13:12.

Fighting back Army came within four points ofLehigh (53-49) at 9:29. It was as close as the BlackKnights would come of the lead for the remainderof the game. Scoring her fifth three-pointer of thenight, Gassman would push Army as close as fivebut Lehigh pulled away scoring the remaining fourpoints on free throws.

Gassman’s 19 points was one shy of her seasonhigh and two points away from tying her careermark. For the 14th time this season Katie Macfarlanehad a double point showing, chipping in 18 points.Amy Saal grabbed a team-high eight rebounds fora season high and added eight points on the night.

Katie Macfarlane led all players with 19 points asthe Army women’s basketball team defeated PatriotLeague newcomer American 78-69 at Bender Arenain Washington, D.C.

Eight seconds into the game Army’s Amy Saalscored the opening basket before American (6-8, 1-1) went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-2 lead at 18:50.

The Black Knights capitalized on four Eagle turn-overs and a foul by Maria Werries to spark a 16-0run, retaking the lead, 18-7 at 14:53. Starting therun, Saal hit a two-point shot at 18:16. In that spanArmy’s Macfarlane scored seven of her 11 first halfpoints while Lindsay Brent chipped in four points,Christine Gassman hit a three-pointer and Saal addeda basket.

With 4:23 remaining in the half, Army’s AmandaBucholz’ fast break basket pushed Army (6-9, 1-1)to its largest lead of the half, 13 (35-22). To end thehalf, American went on a 10-2 run to head into thelockerroom down 38-32.

Triggered by a Macfarlane’s layup at 18:49, Armywent on a 7-0 run in the opening of the second half.Attempting a comeback, American got as close asthree points (53-50) with 8:28 remaining. Armywould have no part of this and went on a 9-1 tear topush its lead to 11 (62-51) at 6:12.

To end the game, Army score 21 of its 29 pointsfrom the charity stripe, beginning at 13:55, to pre-serve the victory.

The win is the first victory over American for theBlack Knights. The two teams met twice before thisseason in non-league play, with American taking bothdecisions.

Also in double figures for the Black Knights, Saaltied her season high with 14 points and Brent chippedin 11 for Army.

Bucknell's Molly Creamer set a Patriot Leagueand school record as she led all scorers with 43points to push the Bison women's basketball teampast Army 79-69 in Lewisburg, Pa.

The early minutes of the game saw five leadchanges and four ties before Army(6-10, 1-2) took over the lead with 7:45 left to thehalf. In a span of 3:34 the Black Knights went on a12-2 tear to take a seven-point lead at 5:04. Thelead was the largest of the half for either team.

Heading into the locker room, the Black Knightsheld a 40-36 advantage. Army outshot Bucknell (10-6, 3-0) 61.5 percent to 41.2 percent on 16 of 26shooting.

The Bisons pushed as close as two (40-38) at19:26 in the opening seconds of the second half.But Army responded by scoring seven of the game'snext eight points to grab a seven-point advantage(46-39) with 16:32 remaining.

Army was unable to hold off the Bison, though,as Bucknell went on a run of its own (9-2) to tie thegame at 48 with 12:57 remaining in the game. TheBlack Knights battled back to retake the lead onelast time, forging ahead 50-48 with 12:37 to play.

Bucknell led the rest of the way with Army com-ing as close as one point three times. Bucknell tookits largest lead of the night at 79-69 with 10 sec-onds to go.

Katie Macfarlane led four Army players in doublefigures with 16 points. She was joined in doubledigits by Amy Saal, who tied her season high with14 points, Christine Gassman, who added 13, andHalaevalu Helu, who finished with 10. Macfarlane,the league leader in rebounding, led all players witheight boards.

The Black Knights opened the second half bydominating the game. The Leopards tied the gameone last time at 29 with 19:30 remaining beforeArmy rattled off 12 straight points pushing to a41-29 advantage (14:11). In that span Army usedtwo points from Katie Macfarlane, Halaevalu Helu,Christine Gassman, Haley Edwards, Saal and AmandaBuchholz.

Lafayette (2-14, 0-4 Patriot League) would comeas close as 10 points (41-31) with 14:11 left in thegame. Army, (7-10, 2-2 Patriot League) increasingits lead, pushed the gap to 28 points, its largestlead of the day, at 69-41 with 2:16 remaining.

The Leopards led most of the first half. At the12:48 mark, Lafayette built its largest lead of theday at seven points (7-14). In the final six minutesof the half, the game saw five lead changes and fourties. Heading into the locker room at the intermis-sion, the two teams were tied at 26.

For the Black Knights, 13 players saw time onthe hardwood. Saal scored a game-high and career-high 16 points. Completing her first double-doubleof the season and second of her career, Saal led allrebounders with a personal-best 13 boards.Macfarlane joined Saal with another double-doubleof 15 points and 10 rebounds. Christine Gassmanadded 13 points for Army and Rejera Arnold netteda career-high 11 points.

Arnold had a perfect night from the floor mak-ing all four of her field goals, including one frombehind the arc. She also went 2-for-2 from the char-ity stripe.

Katie Macfarlane’s 22 points paved the way asthe Army women’s basketball team defeated defend-ing Patriot League Champion Holy Cross in a spir-ited 68-67 victory in West Point, N.Y.

Army (8-10, 3-2 Patriot League) was outscoredby Holy Cross (12-6, 3-2 Patriot League) 41-39 inthe second half but never trailed. The Crusadersopened the half strongly, pulling within one point(19-18) on two Katie O’Keefe foul shots 10 secondsinto the half. The Black Knights then used a 14-4run to take what would prove to be the largest leadof the night, 43-32, at 14:17.

Holy Cross pulled to within one point again at45-44 with 8:42 left in regulation before HalaevaluHelu converted a three-point play to push the leadto 48-44 with 8:19 to go.

Army increased its lead to 10 points (64-54) on athree-pointer by Rejera Arnold with 1:36 left in thegame. Missed free throws by the Black Knightsdown the stretch enabled Holy Cross to slip backinto the contest. Powered by those misses, the Cru-saders went on a 13-4 run to cut the margin to onepoint with just under two seconds remaining in thegame. With one last chance to win, Holy Cross wasunable to get off a final shot and Army preservedthe victory.

The opening half saw four ties and two leadchanges. Army began the game with four quick pointsfrom Macfarlane. The first tie of the game came at16:22 (6-6). The Crusaders went on to score thenext nine points to take their largest lead of thegame at 19-14 with 6:30 left. Army battled back,though, scoring five consecutive points to tie thescore at 19-19 with 5:16 remaining until the break.

The Black Knights forged back ahead to take theadvantage (23-21) with just under three minutes togo until halftime and led 29-26 at the intermission.
