Lot: 25A interesting and important military standard, associated with the Duke of Marlborough, possibly Scots guards, the red silk ground with applied embroidered details comprising: a central shield with a rampant lion, the numeral XXVI to the top left, and 'WILLm III' to the top right, dimensions 54.5 x 57.5cm (21 1/2 x 22 1/2 in.). By family tradition, this standard was itself in the possession of the 1st Duke of Marlborough and passed to the current owner via the Spencer family. This standard has been mounted on a glazed frame: it appears to have been trimmed for the purpose. Nb.
