The best designs are simple. Armorflex is noexception. In fact, the perfection of itsdesign has led to its current position as oneof the most popular systems used today tocontrol erosion caused by wave action.

A machine-compressed cellular concreteblock, Armorflex has a unique interlockingshape – which provides great strength whenlaid, yet makes it remarkably flexible duringinstallation.

Armorflex mats are manufactured andassembled in our UK factory, where the

Armorflex – strength with flexibility

blocks are linked longitudinally by means ofgalvanised wire cables or polyester ropes. The horizontal linkage is made by means ofan interlocking stretcher bond.

The made-up mats are then delivered to thesite where suitable lifting equipment isprovided.

Design features

Up to 35% of the surface area can be openby making two rectangular cells within theblocks. This permits free drainage of groundwater, thus preventing a destabilising build-up of back-pressure behind the revetmentand permits the establishment of indigenousvegetation.

The unique double taper on the sidesof the block also greatly enhances the‘friction interlock’ when the revetmentis blinded with the specified granularmixture.(Refer to H.R. Wallingford Revetment systemsagainst wave attack - a design manual)

But what about the environment? “Concretecan’t be considered when a ‘green’ solutionis desired.” Nothing could be further fromthe truth. One of the great benefits ofArmorflex is the way its open structure canactively encourage plant growth when usedon canal and river banks. This not only actsas a secure binding agent but can also hidethe original structure below a lush cover ofvegetation. Armorflex can therefore providea truly green solution.

With an array of important features,Armorflex is the right solution for a widerange of erosion control problems.

Quality

The blocks are produced usingsophisticated, purpose-built machinery toensure the consistent high qualitycommensurate with its specification:sulphate-resistant to Grade 2, for excellentdurability in service.

Armortec does more than provide you withthe product. Our Field Engineers will helpyou select the right product for yourparticular situation and will assist with on-site advice during the installation.

Moreover, Armortec supplies a wide rangeof geosynthetic fabrics enabling the bestpossible solution to be chosen by thedesigner every time.

The mats are fully interlocked transversely, soadjacent mats can be butted against eachother without discontinuity. Furthermore, mats may be linked both longitudinally andtransversely for more aggressive situations.A range of mat weights, from 140 – 435kg/m2, enables the optimum weight to bechosen for each design requirement. Solidblocks are also available.

Easy installation

Laying is comparatively quick, 150 m2 perhour for a 4-man team plus crane can easilybe achieved.

Plenty of help

Extensive research has been carried out inthe Netherlands, the USA and the UK anddesign recommendations can thus be madeon the basis of extensive trial data andexperience.

Armortec has carried out extensive research intowave and open channel flow conditions onArmorflex in the United States and theNetherlands. Design manuals and computerprograms are available to assist in the properArmorflex block selection for your hydraulicconditions. Design recommendations can thus bemade on the basis of specific research data andsound engineering principles.

Since the early 1980’s, Armortec has initiatedand participated in a wide range of researchprojects to evaluate the performance ofArmorflex, including the following:

1. Tetratech model tests – California, USA.

2. Lelystad field trials, Netherlands –Rijkswaterstaat Directorate of the ZuiderzeeProject, 1982.

3. Wave attack tests, Report No. M1910 – DelftHydraulics Laboratory, 1982.

4. Hartel Canal Trials – Rotterdam Public WorksLaboratory and Delft Soil MechanicsLaboratory.

5. River Waal Breakwaters, Arnhem –Rijkswaterstaat, 1983.

6. CIRIA Report 116 Design of reinforced GrassWaterways.

7. Hydraulic Stability of Articulated ConcreteBlock Revetment Systems During OvertoppingFlow, Colorado State University 1988-2002.

Design assistance

A computer program produced by the ArmortecCorporation can be utilised to give valuableassistance at the design stage as well as providing‘in-use’ statistics which demonstrate the product’smerits.

Mats subject to wave attack should be blindedwith a 5mm to 30mm sand/gravel mixture with aD15 of 5mm. Above the normal waterline, matsmay be topsoiled and seeded to give a ‘green’effect.

Filling volumes are as follows:Armorflex 140 – 0.02 m3 per m2

Armorflex 180 – 0.03 m3 per m2

Armorflex 220 – 0.04 m3 per m2

Armorflex 165 – 0.01 m3 per m2

Armorflex 215 – 0.012 m3 per m2

Armorflex 305 – 0.015 m3 per m2

Armorflex 435 – 0.023 m3 per m2

Product Advice

Our Field Engineers will help you selectthe right product for your particularinstallations and will assist with on-siteadvice during the installation.

Installation couldn’t be faster or easier

Prior to laying Armorflex, the subgrade must beprofiled to line and level and compacted wherenecessary. As the mats are articulated and willadapt to any profile, great care is necessary atthis stage. A geosynthetic fabric is then laid onthe profiled surface.

The mats are delivered to the nearest hard roadon 40’ trailers containing 60 to 180m2 per load, with the geosynthetic and the lifting beamdelivered on the first vehicle. On suitable sites thedelivery can be phased so that mats can beoffloaded directly from the road vehicles onto theprepared subgrade.

If the revetment has a gradient of 1:2 or steeper, the mats may slide on the geosynthetic fabric untilthe system settles and vegetation begins to grow.Temporary anchorage can be achieved by meansof wooden pegs driven at 0.6m centres along thetop of the mats. Permanent anchorage for specialinstallations can be achieved using groundanchors and non-corroding cables.

Summaryof benefitsArmorflex is a flexible, interlockingmatrix of concrete blocks of uniformsize, shape and weight connected by aseries of cables which passlongitudinally through preformed ductsin each unit. Armorflex is installed oversite-specific filter fabric on a preparedsurface. Armorflex revetment systemscombine the favourable aspects oflightweight blankets and meshes, suchas porosity, flexibility, vegetationencouragement and habitatenhancement with the nonerodable, self-weight and high tractive force resistanceof a rigid lining.

Armorflex has proven to be anaesthetic and functional alternative todumped stone riprap, gabions, structuralconcrete and other heavy-duty, durableerosion protection systems. Armorflexis easy to install, therefore, candramatically reduce overall projectcosts. More specifically, when comparedto other revetment systems, life-cyclecosts have been reduced becauseArmorflex is a permanent system andsaves on subsequent maintenanceexpenses.

The following table is based on Delft HydraulicsLaboratory Report M 1910 and is intended to offer aguide to designers. Designs for specific projects canbe prepared using the report itself. The table assumes the following data:a) Revetment slope 1 in 3.b) No reinforcement effect from cables

(assumed corroded).c) Revetment blinded with sand/gravel mixture

after installation.d) Irregular wave pattern Tp = 3.75 secs

(most damaging period found in tests).
