Armies of Oerth-Orders of Battle-by Rob Kuntzfrom Lord of the Green Dragons blogspot

http://lordofthegreendragons.blogspot.com/2010/02/armies-of-oerth-part-i.htmlOne of the earliest gems I found was in Dragon #37. It has a great Sorcerer's Scroll article by Gygax on Greyhawk's evolution, and (at the time) its intended future. At the end of the article, he gave us an added bonus: Orders of Battle forcertain renowned figures from the Greyhawk world - Bigby, Mordenkainen, Robilar, Tenser & "Erac's Cousin". Earlier in the same article, Gary spoke of having aset of rules to set forth the orders of battle of the various governing states of the Flanaess. Players would be able to fight the major battles which could affect the course of history in the World of Greyhawk. Knowing of his roots in wargaming and interest in military history, I would hypothesize the orders of battlegiven are entirely playable (with probably a few adjustments) for whichever wargaming system one was to use.

As I am currently experimenting with Field of Glory, I intend to represent thesearmies accordingly. Each base of models can normally represent 250 men-at-arms,but the rules quickly suggest to ignore this (I suppose a player should unlessone has an incredibly large battle-table and lots of toy soldiers to fill it with!). The player is advised to treat an army as a coherant whole, representing whatever full-sized army its prototype usually fielded. It aims for reaching the c

orrect shape and feel of the army for a more realistic representation of how itfought. Since this system was not designed with fantasy games in mind, it eliminates the use of magic. Still I think it will be a good system to experiment with. So, looking over the army lists, I have decided each model base should represent approximately 25 men-at-arms each. The reason for the smaller ratio is to allow more bases/models on the board to properly play with.

there are several more related articles from other Dragon Magazines giving additional battle forces for some of the greater state armies.

Field of Glory is a set of historical miniatures rules for ancient and medieval

tabletop battles. The rules cover the ancient and medieval period (3000 BC 1500AD) from the rise of the earliest known armies through to the introduction of effective gunpowder weapons. The game scale is flexible and the movement and rangedistances are the same regardless of scale.

FoG is designed to play a battle with 10 15 battle groups in a 3 to 4 hour game. Each battle group is made up of variable number of bases, usually between 2 12each, and are maneuvered by commanders as independent units which remain as a single cohesive block for the game. These battle groups move as a unit but the combat system allows the shooting and melee combats to be fought by those bases exposed or in contact. Battle groups are rated by type (cavalry, heavy foot etc) training, protection level, weapons and morale.

A standard turn consists of a set sequence of phases; an Impact Phase (chargingand combat) a Movement Phase, Shooting, Combat Phase (in addition to the chargecombat) and a final Administrative Phase which deals with a range of command andmorale issues. The sequence is logical and straightforward to follow.

The command and control system rates commanders by levels of competence and applies the simple mechanic of distance from the commander to model the efficiency of the army command and control. Commanders can assist battle groups to maneuver, fight and rally. Under some circumstances a commander can provide benefit to a groupof battle groups which is called a battle line. This simple technique seems

to model the efficiencies of a traditional ancient battle-line quite well.

This simple technique seemsto model the efficiencies of a traditional ancient battle-line quite well.

The move system is reasonably simple and intuitive. Move distances, formations and maneuvers (such as wheels and formation changes) are logical and well explained. One clever touch is the Complex Maneuver Test (CMT) which forces battle groups in close proximity to the enemy and who are performing a complex move to rolldice to complete the move. This makes you think twice about performing formation changes within charge range of the enemy! There is some complexity in the movesequence, fighting in two directions and the ability to feed parts of a battlegroup into an existing melee but the rules do cover these circumstances in sufficient detail to allow an understanding by the second or third game.

The combat system appears complicated but is actually quite straight forward andis well supported by a set of good charts and tables. There are more units ableto shoot and skirmishers now take on the important function of forcing the heavy units to take Cohesion Tests from a trickle of shooting casualties inflicted over a long period of time. Melees now take many turns and the disintegration of

battle groups is gradual and the effects are more subtle than one would normallyobserve in a game where each unit fights to the last man. For example the initial clash between an elite Roman Legion and a Gallic warrior band might see the legionaries disruptedand even lose some elements but often their better armour, better morale and close quarter training will allow them to (over 4 or 5 turns) whittle down the Gauls and cause them to break and run.

Morale rules are also important in determining the outcome of a battle. Supporting units, location of Generals, routing units, rallying units, bolstering(improving a units morale) and the Cohesion Testare some of the techniques the game applies to model the impact of morale on an ancient battle.

The game is supported by a detailed set of annexes and a comprehensive glossary

which is very useful for new players to this system. There is a range of 13 supplemental books containing specific Army Lists, such as Republican & Imperial Rome, Ancient Greeks, Late Medieval Europe, Byzantium, and the Far East. These books are not necessary for using the main rulebook, but they are well presented andillustrated and provide detailed lists of a broad range of historical armies.

In summary, Field of Glory is a well written and well explained system with lotsof clear and colourful diagrams which will ease the pain of learning a new setof rules. The rules have a formed-unit approach that represents many of the aspects of ancient warfare with simple ease. The morale rules add a significant element to the game and are simple to understand and straightforward to apply. The combat rules are not complex, but they do require a methodical and measured approach. New players who rush will either make fundamental errors or become confused

about who did what to whom. The rules have been assembled by a group of long-standing wargamers and several of the contributors are classical or history scholars in their own right.

    Bigby's Army List

This army is actually centered in a very good area related to the City of Greyha

wk and its surrounding Lands of Oerik, specifically somewhere between the ShieldLands & Bandit Kingdoms. Battlewise, this can bring them into oppostion with the Horned Society, Iuz, or even the Kingdom of Furyondy depending on which way this neutral-alligned force may wish to involve itself.

Commander-in-Chief: Bigby (MU of 18th level) = 1 baseOne piece of triviaI found was "His personal symbol is an open palm behind a large, stylized bumblebee". I do not know if this is from his original beginnings when run by Gary Gygax, or if it was simply added to the character's history at some point later by others. Due to the thematic nature of many spells bearing hisname, the 'open palm' is certainly a safe symbol to go with for now.

Heavy Cavalry: 50 (Elite) = 2 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy armour & barding, hand weapons)

Medium Cavalry: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Light Cavalry: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour, small shields, hand weapons)

Light Horse Archers: 100 (Levied) = 4 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour, small shields, bows)

Armored Infantry: 50 (Elite) = 2 base(4 models/base; foot troops, helm, chest armour & substantial shields, hand weapons)

Heavy Infantry: 180 (Regulars) = 8 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy armour & substantial shields, hand weapons)

Light Crossbowmen: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour, small shields, crossbows)

Heavy Crossbowmen: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy armour & substantial shields, crossbows)

Pikemen: 100 (Elite) = 4 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, pikes)

So, this totals 35 bases with 103 models on them.

It is mentioned this force has been occasionally allied with:

    Elven Infantry: 200 = 8 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, swords/hand weapons)

Kron Hills Dwarven Infantry: 150 = 6 bases

(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, axes/hand weapons)

An army this size is more in league with the larger state armies which I plan torepresent later on. I will be using the standard ratio of 250 men-at-arms per base. Yes, the state armies will be THAT huge. For anyone feeling ambitious to build one of these armies in either scale, I will list the number of bases in both

ratios. The number of actual models per base will be the same for both.

100 men/base will be listed in BLUE.250 men/base will be listed in GREEN

    Mordenkainen's Army List

    Commander-in-Chief: Mordenkainen: (MU of 20th level)= 1 base / 1 base

Medium Cavalry: 500 (Regulars) = 5 bases / 2 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Light Cavalry: 500 (Regulars) = 5 bases / 2 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Light Horse Archers: 1,000 (Regulars), = 10 bases / 4 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, bows)

Light Horse Archers: 2,000 (Levied) = 20 bases / 8 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, bows)

This totals 41 bases with 86 models on them.

This totals 17 bases with 35 models on them.

This force was known to be Chaotic, possibly Neutral, with an absolute zero-tolerance policy towards Evil clerics.

    Robilar's Army List

Commander-in-Chief: Robilar (Fighter of 19th level) = 1 baseSometime over one year ago, Robilar freed a demon, and in the ensuing difficulties, forces aligned with Good sacked and destroyed his stronghold west of the Cit

y of Greyhawk. Many of the higher-level figures were slain, but Robilar still has Otto, a high-level magic-user, and Quij, an Orcish hero of high abitlity but low intelligence, as well as some relatively low-leve1 cohorts. It is reported that the following force escaped and is now somewhere in the Pomarj region.

Heavy Cavalry: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy armour & barding, hand weapons)

Medium Cavalry: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

    Light Cavalry: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases

Pole Armed Infantry: 100 (Regular Orcish) = 4 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, pole arms)

This is 27 bases with 71 models on them.

This force is known to be Lawful Evil, but even the minions of Hell eye the armywith suspicion due to its chaotic actions.

    Tenser's Army List

Commander-in-Chief: Tenser (MU of 19th level) = 1 baseSomewhere along the southern shares of the Nyr Dyv is the hidden fortress of Tenser. It is likely that the identity of the master of the place is kept secret. Tenser is accompanied by a high-level cleric and various other figures of relativ

ely high level, some reported to be demi-human. Some say that the ranger, Otis,is with him. The force is Good in alignment, but its exact disposition is unknown. It is suspected that troops from the surrounding area will join with Tenser in time of need.

Heavy Cavalry: 50 (Guards) = 2 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy armor & barding, hand weapons)

Medium Cavalry: 100 (Elite) = 4 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

    Light Cavalry: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases

(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Medium Horse Archers: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, bows)

Armored Infantry: 50 (Guards) = 2 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, helms, chest armour & shields, hand weapons)

Heavy Infantry: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy armour & substantial shields, hand weapons)

Light Infantry: 100 (Levied) = 4 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Heavy Archers: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy armour & substantial shields, bows)

Light Archers: 50 (Levied) = 2 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour & small shields, bows)

So, this totals 27 bases with 77 models on them.

    The Unnamed's Army List(a.k.a. Erac's Cousin's Army List)

Commander-In-Chief: The Unnameda.k.a. Erac's Cousin (MU of at least 16th level) = 1 baseOnce a servant of Good, this very malign individual now serves Hell with will and enthusiasm. Erac's Cousin is seldom seen without a red-eyed rat upon his shoulder. It is also stated that this mage is able to wield a sword with great proficiency (6th level fighting ability!).

Medium Cavalry: 50 (Guards) = 2 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Light Cavalry: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Light Horse Archers: 50 (Regulars) = 2 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, bows)

Heavy Infantry: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy armour & substantial shields, hand weapons)

Heavy Archers: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy armour & substantial shields, bows)

    Pole Armed Infantry: 100 (Regulars) = 4 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, pole-arms)

So, this totals 19 bases with 59 models on them.

Whether or not any of the troops serving Erac's Cousin are humanoid is open to debate. Certainly, humanoid levies will join his forces in some strength if theyare called.

    Beware the Ides of March!

I will soon be taking a look at some of the larger state armies from the World of Greyhawk previously shown in the Dragon Magazine.

Sorceror's Scroll article from Dragon Magazine #56Gary Gygax gives us a look into the events in the north central Flanaess region.Specifically, the article revolves around two groups of states. In the westernregion, the events surround the Wolf Nomads, the Rovers of the Barrens, luz, andthe Horned Society. Eastward, some interesting developments allow the Duchy of

Tenh to make a strong foray into the Bandit Kingdoms.

    The Wolf Nomads' Army List

At one time, the Wegwiur (Wolf Nomads) horsemen contested gladly with the Roversof the Barrens for the rights to the lands around the Howling Hills and the Dulsi River, sometimes defeating them and sometimes being driven away. With the rebirth of Iuz, the Wolf Nomads shun the territory they once disputed, and are themselves subject to raids from humanoids and humans from Iuz. These Nomads are notdaunted by these forays, however, and have given as good as they've gotten. The

ir banners depict one or more wolves, and their standards bear wolftails and heads.

    Commander-in-Chief: Bargru, Tarkhan & Commander ofthe Relentless Horde (F 14th level/MU(I) 2nd level) = 1 base

Medium Cavalry: 2000 (Guards) = 8 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, lances)

Light Cavalry: 10000 (Regulars) = 40 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Light Horse Archers: 7000 (Regulars) = 28 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, bows)

    Armored Crossbowmen: 1000 (Regulars) = 4 bases(4 models/base; Foot, helms & chest armour & moderate shields, crossbows)

So, this totals 81 bases with 177 models on them.

NOTE: Sorcerer's Scroll, Dragon Magazine #55. Gygax has given us a brief look atthe racial populations & some national dress guidelines that could be used whenpainting this army. He mentions the Wolf Nomads being intermixed with the Rovers of the Barons. Even though they are partially of the Baklunish strain, they ra

cially show the darker Flan blood.

Flannae: bronze skin, black to brown hair, dark brown eyes, clothing is of solidbright hues with yellow ochre and vermillion being the favorites, and the morecivilized Flan dress in the mode currently fashionable in their portion of the continent.

    Iuz's Army List

    Commander-in-Chief: Iuz, The Old, Demigod

    (C, 16th level & T(A), 16th level) = 1 base

Whether luz is a human who has become demon-like through the centuries, or whether he is a semi-demon, a cambion (as some suggest, a by-blow of Orcus), no mortal knows. He is, however, the first known godling of Chaotic Evil, whose wickedness and treachery are infamous throughout the Flanaess. luz rules a portion of Oerth, a horrid territory which bears its master's name, from the cursed city of Molag. Few creatures beyond the boundaries of this domain will even speak his name, let alone adore him. Clerics of luz dress in rusty black (their master's favorite color) or white streaked with rust-red bloodstains.

    Sub-Commander: Lord Choldraf (C, 14th level) = 1 base

    Sub-Commander: Mellard-Plict (MU, 12th level) = 1 base

Heavy Cavalry: 2000 = 8 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy armor & barding, hand weapons)

Light Cavalry: 1000 (Guards) = 4 bases(2 models/bases; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Goblin Infantry: 3000 = 12 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Orc Infantry: 6000 = 24 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Hobgoblin Infantry: 4000 = 16 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Infantry (various humanoids): 5000 to 8000 = 20 to 32 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

So, this totals 103 to 115 bases with 307 to 343 models on them.

Continuing in my endeavour to study the greater armies in the Flanaess, I had discovered another Sorceror's Scroll article. This one was from Dragon Magazine #57. Gary Gygax gives us a look into the activities of Stonefist's Hold, what someof the northern barbarians are up to, the developing events of Ratik and Bone March, and continuing down towards Aerdi's South Province - particularly in relation to Sunndi, Idee, and Onnwal.

The Hold of Stonefist's Army List

Disorganized raids and internal struggles threatened to keep the Hold of Stonefist from becoming a serious threat to its neighbors. Invasion from the Duchy of Tenh threatened their stability further. Seuvord Redbeard refused to be drawn into a civil war, knowing the surrounding enemies of the Hold would take advantageof the opportunity and destroy the remnants of the state. Seuvord called a greatcouncil and reconciled the differing warband leaders. The council granted him t

he hereditary title of Rhelt making him the Master of the Hold. Under his rule, expansion of the Stonefist frontier has been pushed past Big Seal Bay, 80 or 90leagues into territory claimed by the northern Ice Barbarians.

    Commander-in-Chief: Seuvord 'Redbeard' I,Rhelt & Master of the Hold (F 18th level) = 1 base

Sub-Commander: Vlek Col Vlekzed, Atamen = 1 base

    Sub-Commander: Dyerg Keda, Atamen (F 12th level) = 1 base

Light Cavalry: 2000 = 8 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

Heavy Infantry: 1000 (Guards) = 4 bases(4 models/base; heavy armour & substantial shields, hand weapans)

Medium Infantry: 6000 ('Fist' units) = 24 bases(3 models/base; leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

    Light Infantry: 1000 = 4 bases(2 models/base; no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

So, this totals 43 bases with 115 models on them.

    --

These army lists are abit more subjective. The only army layout provided by Gygax was for the Frost Barbarians. The other two lists are based on comments from the article, brief blurbs from the World of Greyhawk Gazetteer, and some comparative army structure from Field of Glory supplement books.

Three major groups vie for control of the whole Bone March. The most powerful group are the humanoids under the Orcs of the Vile Rune. The second strongest group are the Orcs of the Death Moon Tribe. Both groups have considerable numbers ofvarious sorts of humanoids serving them. Both are also led by half-orcs and assisted by evil humans. The third power group is a force of ogres and gnolls basedin the hills of the Teeser Torrent. This force is commanded by ogre magi. South Province's Army List

The ruler of South Province, Herzog Chelor III, a cousin of the Overking in Rauxes, is in disfavour. All previous attempts to regain the lost portions of the fief have been turned back in defeat, and the revenue coming to the Malachite Throne have diminished considerably, for the lost territories were rich indeed. Thusthe Herzog has stated the intent to stake his entire personal fortune on a lastattempt to break the Iron League. Success would make his title something more than hot air, regain favour for him in Rauxes, swell his coffers to bursting withwealth, and lastly giving much personal satisfaction to him. He has currently g

    Sunndi's Army List

The County of Sunndi was once a fief within a fief, being granted to a loyal peer of the Overking's Herzog of the South Province of the Great Kingdom. After a long period of oppressive taxation, maltreatment by royal troops and those of theHerzog as well, they eventually rebelled and joined the general uprising against Aerdian rule. The county is well protected by natural barriers which enable itto be defended - the dense Rieuwood and hills to east and west. It is threatened continually from the north by the Herzog's legions, from the east by the forces of the Holy Censor of Medegia, and by the Sea Barons along its coasts.

    Commander-in-Chief: Count Hazendel(C 5th level/F 8th level/MU 8th level) = 1 base

ense of security, Idee was ill-prepared for the strength and force of the SouthProvince's army. As Fedorik mustered an unready army of 6,000 men, the timely assistance of Dwarfking Holgi Hirsute chased the Herzog's forces back. Unfortunately, a rift has developed between the Count and the Dwarfking. There is no question the defending army of the Iron League will be badly outnumbered due to the rupture, but the Iron Hills are still relatively secure against invasion even though Holgi Hirsute stands separately from the allies.

    Commander-in-Chief: Count Fedorik Eddri (F 14th level) = 1 base

    Irongate's Army List

This large and thriving city is based on sea commerce and trade between Onnwal and the east. Irongate developed an independent spirit early in its history due t

o its minglng of peoples and ideas. As the rule of the Overking grew more despotic, the people of the city began to murmur, and the Lord Mayor headed a deputation bearing grievances to the Herzog. These emissaries were thrown into prison, given a mock trial, and executed by ritual torture for the Overkings entertainment. The following year the whole of the south was in arms against the realm, and after a brief struggle the Iron League was founded, an alliance of mutual supportwhich aided the rebellious states to throw off the yoke of the Aerdi tyrants. Irongate has a strong naval squadron and a large company of armored infantry in League service. Cobb Darg is using all of his efforts to heal the breach betweenIdee and Dwarfking Holgi Hirsute, for a united front will certainly be more able

    Onnwal's Army List

Onnwal was originally a lesser fief of the Herzog of South Province, to be granted as he saw fit to his faithful followers. The oppressive rule of the Great Kingdom brought great discontent and instigated open rebellion, the whole of the South Province being in arms. All of the lower portion was lost to the empire whenthe Iron League was founded. Onnwal and Irongate supplied the sea power, whilethe other members furnished troops for land actions. Irongate was besieged by Aerdian forces for several months, but in the battle of a Thousand Banners the siege was lifeted when a ruse panicked the northerners, and great numbers of them were subsequesntly slain by a combined host of men and Gray Elves of the League. While never invaded, Onnwal is subjeet to periodic sea raids from the Herzog's squadrons. The major port of Scant is exceptionally well fortified because of this fact.

Commander-in-Chief: Count Szek Elverd, of the House of Destan(F 12th level) = 1 base

Armoured Infantry: 600 = 3 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, helm & chest armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Light Infantry (Levied): 4,000 = 16 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

This totals 45 bases with 117 models on them.

This completes the armies from Dragon Magazine #57.Of course, it doesn't stop there. Not just yet...

    --

Continuing my study of the greater armies in the Flanaess, I had discovered another article. From Dragon Magazine #59, this one is entitled The Great Kingdom and The Knights of Doom - Notes From The World of Greyhawk Fantasy Setting and written by the Lord of the Green Dragons himself, Rob Kuntz. It gives us a look into some of the activities of the Great Kingdom, as well as the controlled servant

s of the OverKing Ivid and his Court Wizard Xaene: the dreaded Knights of Doom.

The Knights of Doom were written up to be used for NPC encounters, likely as they scoured the coutryside fulfilling the dark will of their masters. The LotGD gives us a superb breakdown of the KoD, their levels, the number of men-at-arms they lead, and most importantly...a breakdown of the unit composition of the GreatKingdom's army. Reverse calculation of the KoD & their units actually allows anestimate of how many KoD there are and a better estimate as to the size of thegreater army.

    The Great Kingdom's Army List

Once the most powerful force for order and good, the Aerdians have declined overthe last century to an unspeakable state of decadency. After a millenium of leadership, its rulers and nobles turned to evil and irrationality. Its current monarch, Ivid V of the royal house of Naelax, is reported to be quite mad, but crafty and deviously capable nonetheless. His writ extends to the Royal Demesne surrounding the capital, the Grandwood, and further only by threat and persuasion ofthe Peers whose fiefs comprise the balance of the realm.

    Commander-in-Chief: OverKing Ivid,(C 7th level/MU 12th level) = 1 base

Sub-Commander: Xaene, Court Wizard (MU 16th level) = 1 base

Heavy Cavalry: 2,000 = 8 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy plate armour & lances, substantial shields)

Heavy Cavalry: 3,000 = 12 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy chain armour & lances, substantial shields)

    Medium Cavalry: 2,000 = 8 bases

(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Medium Horse Archers: 1,000 = 4 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, bows)

Heavy Halberdiers: 2,000 = 8 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy plate armour & substantial shields, halberds)

    Heavy Pole-Arms: 2,000 = 8 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, chain mail armour & substantial shields, pole-arms)

    Medium Infantry: 4,000 = 16 bases

(3 models/base; foot troops, chainmail armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Light Infantry: 2,000 = 8 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Medium Crossbowmen: 600 = 3 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, crossbows)

Medium Archers: 400 = 2 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, long bows)

So, this totals 83 bases with 253 models on them.

Alternately, you could have the army led by:

Commander-in-Chief: Knight of Doom, Greater Marshal (F 11th level)wears magic plate armour, wields a sword of cold, and can withstand all types offire

    The Sea Baron's Army List

The people of these lands are a mix of Oeridian and Flan. Centuries ago, the Overking established four baronial island fiefs here, instructing each to build squ

adrons of ships and compete with each other. Whichever proved best in naval warfare would be appointed supreme baron, admiral of Aerdy, and be duly rewarded with Imperial favor. Old Baron Asperdi won the contest, and now, the baron of thatisland rules the Sea Barons. The main duties of the Barons in serving Aerdy wereto fight off the Frost and Ice Barbarians and the Lordship of the Isles, whichthey carried out without great enthusiasm.

    Commander-in-Chief: Aldusc, Lord Captain (F 9th level)= 1 base / 1 base

Light Cavalry (Elites): 120 = 1 base / 2 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

    Heavy Infantry: 600 = 3 bases / 6 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy plate armour & substantial shields, halberds)

    Heavy Infantry (Veterans): 120 = 1 base / 2 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, chain mail armour & substantial shields, pole-arms)

    North Province's Army List

In the North Province, Herzog Grenell's forces have been battered by incursionsof Almor and Nyrond into the southern part of the Bone March. They have also suffered the continual raids from humanoid bands near Bellport, who have not thrownin their banners with the Herzog as of yet. Having withdrawn his forces, and noenemies pursuing, the Herzog has been slowly rebuilding his army to some degree. With the addition of the Sea Barons, the North Province's army again approaches the strength of 10,000. If the humanoid bands do not immediately force the issue, Grenell might well turn the tide of affairs.

The Herzog is in a quandry, for he must not only regain complete control of hisown territory but also be ready to supply troops to the Overking when the confro

ntation between his master and Nyrond occurs soon. Dare he risk failure in battle again and offend the Malachite Throne? To make matters worse, General Hooglish, a new commander for the Western Approaches, has been causing dissension amongst the Herzong's allies. Hooglish detests the Sea Barons and believes he can handle any enemy force that comes against him.

Commander-in-Chief: General Hooglish, Commander of the Western Approaches = 1 base / 1 base

Heavy Cavalry: 200 = 1 base / 2 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy armour & substantial shields, hand weapons)

Light Infantry (Levied): 2,000 = 8 bases / 20 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, no armour & small shields, hand weapons)

    This totals:12 bases with 34 models / 28 bases with 82 models

e, it is entirely possible to discern the troops from a previous Armies of Oertharticle concerning the Great Kingdom. Based on an article from Dragon Magazine#59 and the breakdown of the Knights of Doom's military hierarchy, a glimpse ofthe North Province's army emerges. Primarily overseen by one of the Knights of Doom's Marshals, the stronger arm of the North Province army under Herzog Grenellwould look something like this (using the ratio of 250 men-at-arms per model base):

    Commander-in-Chief: Grenell, Herzog of the North Province (T(A) 15th Level) = 1base

Heavy Cavalry: 1,000 = 4 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy plate armour & lances, substantial shields)

Heavy Cavalry: 1,500 = 6 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy chain armour & lances, substantial shields)

Medium Cavalry: 1,000 = 4 bases(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

    Medium Horse Archers: 500 = 2 bases

(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, bows)

Heavy Halberdiers: 1,000 = 4 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, heavy plate armour & substantial shields, halberds)

    Heavy Pole-Arms: 1,000 = 4 bases(4 models/base; foot troops, chain mail armour & substantial shields, pole-arms)

Medium Infantry: 2,000 = 8 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, chainmail armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Light Infantry: 1,000 = 4 bases(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Medium Archers: 500 = 2 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, short bows)

Medium Crossbowmen: 300 = 2 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, crossbows)

Medium Archers: 200 = 1 base(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, long bows)

So, this totals 42 bases with 213 models on them.

    See of Medegia's Army List

The Holy Censor was originally the chief cleric of the Great Kingdom. Clerical holdings were granted from Re1 Astra to Pontylver south of the Mikar and Flanmi Rivers, including a portion of the Imperial Preserve (Grandwood Forest). This fief became so strong as to be virtually independent when the Malachite Throne wentinto decline. The Holy Censor still remains one of the chief advisors of the Overking, however, and he reigns oppressively over peasant masses with full approval from Rauxes. The clerics and nobles of the See have grown exceedingly rich, and their mercenary forces harry the Olvenfolk in the Grandwood and loot across the Flanmi in the Glorioles and Hestmark Highlands where the Censor has extendedhis holdings to these very foothills, contesting with dwarves and gnomes withoutquarter.

Commander-in-Chief: Spidensa, His Equitable Nemesis of Medegia (C 15th level) =1 base

Heavy Cavalry: 1,000 = 4 bases(3 models/base; knights on horses, heavy plate armour & lances, substantial shields)

    Medium Cavalry (Mercenary): 300 = 2 bases

(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Light Cavalry: 1,500 = 6 bases(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Medium Infantry: 1,200 = 5 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, chainmail armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Medium Infantry (Mercenary): 2,100 = 9 bases(3 models per base; foot troops, leather armour, moderate shields hand weapons)

    Light Infantry (Levied): 2,400 = 10 bases

(2 models/base; foot troops, no armour & no shields, hand weapons)

Medium Infantry (Humanoids-Orcs, etc): 4,000 = 16 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

    Armoured Infantry (Guards-mixed): 7,000 = 28 bases(3 models/base; foot troops, chainmail armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

So, this totals 81 bases with 225 models on them.

After Captain General Gahru's blundering defeat in Granwood Forest, the Overkinghas sent another Imperial force to deal with them. The Holy Censor may call upon them for assistance should the need arise. The force consists of:

    Sub-Commander: Banwald, General (F 8th level) = 1 base

Medium Cavalry (Mercenary): 150 = 1 base(3 models/base; riders on horses, leather armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Light Cavalry (Guards): 240 = 1 base(2 models/base; riders on horses, no armour & no shields, hand weapons)

    Armoured Infantry (Guards-Orcs): 240 = 1 base(3 models/base; foot troops, chainmail armour & moderate shields, hand weapons)

Medium Crossbowmen (Guards): 120 = 1 base(3 models/base; foot troops, chainmail armour & no shields, crossbows)

Medium Infantry (Mercenary): 750 = 3 bases(3 models per base; foot troops, leather armour, moderate shields hand weapons)

es and Views of the Greyhawk Campaign: Events of the Eastern and Southern Flanaess. This one begins with a proclamation of war issued against the Great Kingdomand her satellites by the Kingdom of Nyrond, the Prelacy of Almor, and their allies. This, in conjunction with the various military activities already in motion, as well as some other mysterious happenings, serve only to ignite the inevitable powderkeg that has been growing within the region.

    Prelacy of Almor's Army List

Originally a fief of Aerdy, Almor grew in power and independence as the Great Kingdom became weak and decadent. The state is only loosely organized, but it hasa strong spirit of freedom and justice based upon religious precepts. The peoples are mainly farmers and herdsmen and fisherfolk. The Prelacy is strongly suppor

ted by Nyrond as a buffer between that realm and that of the Overking, and paysa stipend to help support the standing army of Almor.

    Commander-in-Chief: Anarkin, Prelate of Almor, Arch-cleric (C 12th level) = 1 base

The Kingdom of Nyrond's Army List

The strength of Nyrond, and the hostility of its rulers and nobles, have been the major protection for the civilized nations of the Flanaess against the depredations of the Great Kingdom and its mad emperors. Nyrond also went through a phase of near-imperialism, making both the County of Urnst and the Theocracy of thePale tributary states for a time. This course was altered, however, when the wise King Dustan I. called Crafty, saw his realm threatened by internal strife andextenor enemies and called up the Great Council of Rel Mord. Here, the king metwith ambassadors from Almor, the Iron league, the Pale, and Urnst. All troops were withdrawn from the Pale and Urnst thereafter, the Nyrondese allowing both areas self-determination, and both, in turn, agreeing to a concord entailing mutualtrade and military support. Almor was treated somewhat similarly, and aid was g

ranted to the Iron League in the form of loans and treaties which assured the League of survival against the common enemy.

The current boundaries of Nyrond are: Nesser River - Franz River - Artonsamay River - Nutherwood - Gamboge Forest (northern terminus) - Rakers - Flint Hills - (lower) Harp River - Relmor Bay. Nyrondal contingents assist Urnst and the Pale against the Bandit Kingdoms, and a squadron of their warships sails Relmor Bay and the Sea of Gearnat in support of the Iron League. Strong garrisons of the Nyrondese Army are stationed in strategic positions to move to the aid of either Almor or the Pale in time of need.
