A festive crowd enjoyed the activities including a sausage sizzle cooked by Armadale Police Rangers, giant games, a bouncy castle and aqua inflatables and the acoustic tunes of Robert Parker. Patrons reminisced over the photo displays and had a first glimpse of the future centre from a video walk-through. Mayor Henry Zelones acknowledged the Aquatic Centre staff for their months of commitment to planning the final farewell to the old facility. More than 100 people including key art leaders from across Western Australia turned up to hear the Minnawarra Art Awards 2017 winners announced last week. The exhibition held in the iconic Armadale District Hall was professionally curated by the nationally recognised curator Robert Buratti, who praised all the exhibiting artists for creating works of the highest quality. As part of the City’s continued commitment to support the local arts community, the evening was the opening event for the launch of the Armadale Arts Festival, which will run over 17 days, with 42 events at 15 venues throughout the City. The Gerry Gauntlett Award went to local artist Ruth de Vos for This Discovering 2, and the Stockland 3D Commission Award went to Britt Mikkelsen for her piece entitled Quidalup III. WA artist Carly Le Cerf won the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority Acquisitive Award for her art work Soaked (pictured left). Local Artist Award went to Annabel Haizer for Lost Wor(l)ds and Eva Fernandez took out the Highly Commended Award for her work Isabel La Catolica. Members of the public can enter the People’s Choice Award by voting on their favourite artwork, with the chance to win one of two exclusive Alister Yiap silver and black nano crystal pendants which celebrate the new public sculpture recently installed in Jull Street Mall. The Minnawarra Art Awards are open to the public every day between 11am to 4pm until Sunday 7 May. The City’s STREAMCARE waterways restoration program has assisted hundreds of Armadale landowners to care for their local riverside environment. Free native plants are available for eligible landowners to revegetate and create a healthier environment along their river foreshore. GivingBackathon STREAMCARE Perth was recently acknowledged as the fourth best urban art destination in the world and Armadale has become part of that story. Internationally renowned mural artists have been invited to create their signature portraiture inspired art on a series of selected walls along Jull Street, Armadale. The commissioned artist for stage one, Matt Adnate from Victoria, has completed his colourful mural in Memorial Park.
