It’s been a busy September, hasn’t it? Between our first membership meet-ing , the ARMA International Confer-ence, and the planning some of our members are doing for the VAGARA Conference October 16-18, it’s a wonder we’re all not faint from exhaustion. The ARMA Conference in Chicago was a great experience. The networking, as well as the vendor technology and in-dustry sessions were eye-opening. The education sessions were thought-provoking. I had the opportunity to hang out after conference hours with colleagues from other chapters and eat some good deep dish pizza and see the sights. The Annual Conference is like a bat-tery-charger. In our profession, it’s easy to feel beaten down and unimpor-tant. Attending the conference helps the Records and Information Manager regain some serious motivation and gain some creative ideas for strategiz-ing and imple-menting sound RIM practices in their organi-zations. This month, the chapter will welcome students from local colleges at our monthly

membership meeting as a way to reach out to them and provide some real-life RIM education. I’m looking forward to it, and hope you are planning to attend. Next month’s meeting is a big deal. Not only is it our annual joint meeting with the Richmond Chapter and the Old Dominion Chapter of AIIM, it is also a meeting that will mark the Tide-water Chapter’s 40th Anniversary. I hope you will plan to attend that meet-ing as well. In the meantime, enjoy this photo I took in Chicago of the Buckingham Fountain, and I look forward to seeing you on October 23.

2012 ARMA Conference delivers education and networking ARMA International conducted its Annual Conference in Chicago, IL, September 23—25, 2012. Chapter members in attendance included Darlene Barber (Newport News Ship-building), Lori Gay (Bayport Credit Union), Kim Kindrew (Jefferson Lab), Jonathan Tillman (Newport News Depart-ment of Public Utilities), and Kimberly Wilson (AMERIGROUP Corporation). On Saturday, September 22, the Opening Reception in-cluded a 1920s themed extravaganza during which confer-ence attendees were invited to wear their best vintage cos-tumes. Barber and her husband Jeff participated in the costume contest with a number of other ARMA members. Although the Tidewater Chapter agreed that the couple looked the best, they lost to another contestant. Sunday morning’s Opening General Session’s Keynote Speaker was John W. Bagby, Professor of Information Sci-ences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. Bagby’s presentation, was entitled “Tales from the Litiga-tion War Room: High Stakes in Information Governance,” and in it, he explored various catastrophes and crises, and stress the importance of good information governance, stan-dards, and best practices to mitigate risks. The Expo Hall was bustling Sunday and Monday, and it was the place to be for educational sessions, the ARMA In-ternational Educational Foundation’s Silent Auction, and networking with the vendors. In addition, the Expo Hall is

home to the Pub Crawl and numerous drawings and give-aways. More than 200 exhibitors were registered to attend the conference. General educational sessions took place Sunday afternoon through the end of the conference on Tuesday. About the Institute of Certified Records Managers

The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM) is an international certifying organization of and for professional records and information managers. The ICRM was incorporated in 1975 to meet the requirement to have a standard by which persons involved in records and information management could be measured, accredited and recognized according to criteria of experience and capability established by their peers. The ICRM is an independent non-profit organization administered by a Board of Re-gents. The ICRM serves as the official certifying body for both ARMA In-ternational and the Nuclear Information and Records Management Asso-ciation (NIRMA).

ICRM Announces Alan Andolsen Mentor of the Year Award Recipient

The ICRM recognized the first recipient of the Alan Andol-sen Mentor of the Year Award as Kathleen Glasgow Sparks, CRM, during its 2012 Annual Business meeting.

In April 2011, the ICRM Board of Regents established the Alan Andolsen Mentor of the Year Award. Alan Andolsen was the President of the Insti-tute when he passed away on January 24, 2010. A long time employee of Naremco Ser-vices, Alan loved to teach. He saw a consulting engagement as an opportunity to share his knowledge with a client as well as promote the benefits of becoming a CRM. He was very generous with his personal resources, both time and

money, to improve the CRM process. With Alan, “mentoring” was second nature. Co-incidently, Alan was born in Mentor, Ohio. This award was created in Alan’s memory to recognize a CRM in good standing who has contributed significantly to the ICRM and to certification through their mentoring ac-tivities. Mentoring activities include but are not limited to the following: Individual mentoring and coaching; Promoting the CRM designation; Teaching/presentation of CRM Exam Prep seminars or

other venues, Hosting or contributing to CRM study groups. Kathleen earned her CRM over thirty (30) years ago and has been mentoring RIM professionals ever since. Her dedication to promoting certification and helping prepare CRM Candidates has influenced hundreds if not thou-

sands. She can personally name forty (40) Records and In-formation Management (RIM) professionals who earned their CRM as a direct result of her mentorship. Many of those CRMs were present at the Annual Business Meeting to recognize Kathleen’s mentorship. In the 1980’s, she formed a CRM study group conducting regular monthly meetings. While serving as the Region 7 Vice President for ARMA International, she traveled throughout the north-eastern United States and spoke to chapters about the benefits of becoming a CRM and the process of certification. She also taught CRM exam preparation workshops in Can-ada for those chapters in close proximity to her home. Later in the 1990’s, she served as the Dallas/Fort Worth’s Chapter of ARMA International’s ICRM liaison and coordi-nated numerous study groups with Helen Harden and other chapter members. Our recipient worked with Chuck Nolan and Pat Vice to start the first CRM exam preparation ac-tivities in ARMA International’s Southwest Region, for-merly known as Region V. She also spoke to ARMA Inter-national members at chapter events in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma regarding both ob-taining the CRM and certification maintenance. She has also addressed hundreds of CRM Candidates and pros-pects at seminars and ARMA International conferences on the topic of preparing for the exams. She worked with the late Gail Pennix to initiate the ICRM Mentoring program started before turning it over to Gail Ann McCreary who shepherded it for many years thereafter. She also served on the Institute’s Board of Regents including two years as Regent for Professional Development and Public Relations, two years as Vice-President and two years as President. The ICRM Board of Regents is honored to recognize and congratulate Kathleen Glasgow Sparks, CRM, as its first Alan Andolsen Mentor of the Year Award recipient.

Chapter volunteers: five easy ways to be more productive as a volunteer By Kim Kindrew, CRM

Records and Information Managers are busy people. In our workplaces, we juggle projects, customer and employee relations, changes in regulatory guide-lines, meetings and committees. Add into the mix our personal lives: kids and their extracurricular activi-ties, school and church activities, care-giving for our parents, and financial concerns.

How in the world can a RIM profes-sional squeeze professional activities into an already busy schedule? The answer is time management. Here are some steps to take toward greater productivity as a volunteer: 1. You have to want to do it. If

you don’t want to do it, then you won’t do a very good job because, well, you don’t want to do it.

2. Prioritize. Determine which task is most important and do that one first, and so on. Baby steps.

3. Be organized. 4. Just do it. Don’t let your insecu-

rities or worries prevent you from getting something done.

5. Take some “me” time. Without your good health, nothing can get accomplished and your work and family will suffer, too.
