WELCOME TO THE FAIR!

Left to right: Stephanie Wright, District 3; Council Chair Dave Somers, District 5; Ken Klein, District 1; Vice-Chair Brian Sullivan, District 2; and Terry Ryan, District 4

It is my tremendous pleasure to welcome you to Snohomish County’s 2014 Evergreen State Fair.

With so much to do, it’s a wonder how you will experience it all in just two short weeks! Enjoy the carnival rides, concerts, races, reworks, tasty treats, animals, and more!

Snohomish County takes great pride in hosting this annual event. It’s more than just rst-class entertainment and food, it’s also an opportunity to showcase and celebrate our community’s strong agricultural heritage.

Get together with your family, friends, and neighbors and let’s all have a great time making memories that will last a lifetime!

Sincerely,Dave SomersSnohomish County Council, Chairman

Thanks for joining us at the 106th annual Ever-green State Fair. As Snohomish County Executive, I’m pleased to support such a wonderful annual event. The fair truly showcases what makes this county a great place to live, work and play. From the incredible food, to the farm animals, rides and exhibits, the fair gives us all an opportunity to relax and enjoy everything that Snohomish County has to o er.

So welcome!

John LovickSnohomish County Executive

Each year, the Evergreen State Fair honors an individual or family who has contributed signi cant personal time and energy toward the improvement and betterment of the annual fair. Their e orts can be focused in a speci c area of exhibition or toward the overall function of the fair. The Fair Honoree is recognized for his/her work and accomplishments at the opening day ceremony for the Evergreen State Fair.

This year’s Fair Honoree, Pam Phelps, has been involved in many di erent aspects of the fair for over 43 years. Always focusing on education, Pam led groups on eld trips to Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, the desert of eastern Washington in bloom, and the Ellensburg Elk Feeding Station, in addition to leading many camping trips, river-raft rides, canoe trips, and salmon tours. She also provided education on boating safety, marine sciences, and wildlife identi cation.

Pam began by assisting wherever she could in the Cats Program at the fair, then went on to serve as super-intendent of the Natural Sciences Department and the Snohomish County Fair display, and organize the Junior Loggers competition. She attends the Evergreen State Fair Advisory Board meetings as a representa-tive of the County’s 4H Council, reporting those proceedings back to 4H Council. She is an active 4H Council member serving on numerous committees, including the planning committee for the 2008 Washington State Forum held in Everett.

Superintendent Coordinator Sherry Stovner says, “I very much appreciate the many hours of extra help Pam does for me to get ready for each year’s fair. She is always available to help and with a smile, lending a hand cleaning, organizing supplies, packing ribbons, or doing whatever is needed.” Outside the fair, Pam’s community service continues, volunteering countless hours with the Grange and her church, popping many bags of pop-corn for movies, carnival days, and special events.

Congratulations Pam!

Do you know how many hands a Percheron has? Where to nd a buttercup comb? How to pronounce Appenzeller Spitzhauben? You’re in the right place to nd out! This year, tap into the animal magnetism of the

106th Evergreen State Fair. Spend some extra time in the animal barns, equestrian area and petting farm. And be sure to talk with the kids in 4-H and FFA who devote months prepping for this 12-day extravaganza, the largest and most varied collection of animals in Snohomish County.

We’re glad you’re here! Have fun!

…Experience Animal Magnetism!…Experience Animal Magnetism!

Enjoy your day at the Evergreen State Fair and help people eat at the same time!

Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, August 22, and again on Friday, Au-gust 29, the gate admission price to the Evergreen State Fair is three (yes, only 3) cans of food! The food collected will go the Snohomish County Food Bank Coalition to be shared among the 20 food bank members.

Neil Watkins, president of the Snohomish County Food Bank Coalition, states that we would love to report to you all that the number of people needing food bank services has declined as we begin to see economic recovery impacting our state. The reality, however, is that many families and individuals are still strug-gling to put food on the table.

What’s changing about hunger since the recession is how it impacts the “working poor.” Many of these individuals were laid o during the recession and have returned to work but are often underemployed and earning wages signi cantly lower than before the recession. Since they are not eligible for food stamps, the food bank is the local resource that is able to help while they continue ghting to get back on their feet economically.

Now, more than ever, we need your help to keep putting food into the hands of our neighbors who need it most! We thank you, your community thanks you and you will have a great time at the fair!

Did you know that approximately 85% of thewaste produced at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds is diverted from the land ll? That’s pretty good, but we can do even better.

There is still more than 245 tons of garbageheaded to the land ll from the Fairgroundseach year — that’s the weight of 19 schoolbuses!

Help us have a greener fair by reducing, reusing and recycling.

One of America’s most beloved comedians of all time, Bill Cosby has captivated generations of fans with his comedy routines, iconic albums and bestselling books such as Fatherhood. His comedy transcends age, gender and cultural barriers.    Cosby broke television’s racial barrier with I Spy, becoming the rst African American to costar on a television series while winning three consecutive Emmys.  He created and produced the Emmy-winning cartoon Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, which began airing in the 1970s and was made into a lm in 2004. The show, based on Cosby’s childhood in Philadelphia, was designed to educate and entertain.

The former Navy serviceman’s illustrious list of accomplishments includes roles on the children’s educational show Electric Company and creating and producing the Emmy award winning Little Bill, which is based on his bestselling book series.

Perhaps Cosby’s greatest contribution to American entertainment and culture is The Cosby Show, about a close-knit, upper class black family.  Cosby said his intent was to portray an American family. Time magazine called the show “an encouraging sign of maturity in matters of race.”   The Cosby Show dominated the No. One spot for years, earning nearly unanimous critical praise.  Life magazine described the program as “a gentle, whimsical, warmhearted” show whose “delicious ordinariness of its pleasures and tribulations has given millions a fresh, laughter-splashed perspective on their own domestic lives.”

Bill Cosby’s current best seller, I Didn’t Ask to Be Born, But I’m Glad I Was. Cosby talks about the Bible, being a grandfa-ther and his rst love in his humorous and insightful manner.

Cosby has received the Kennedy Center Honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (America’s highest civilian honor), the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and the Marian Anderson Award.

BUTLER AMUSEMENTS CARNIVAL The Cleanest Show in the West!

Butler Amusements, the largest carnival in the Western United States, was founded in 1970. Four generations of the Butler family own and actively operate this thriving company. Always committed to its motto “The Cleanest Show in the West”, Butler hires grounds clean up employees who work from carnival opening until closing, each day of the fair. Throughout Butler’s existence, it has provided the newest and most exciting rides and attractions available in the carnival industry. The presentation of the carnival always includes innumerable features which give a bright colorful appearance while always stressing a safe and customer-friendly environment.

The Evergreen Fair comes alive under the lights of the Magical Midway, where fairgoers of all ages will nd their favorite rides!

Near the Blue Gate (East) are the Family and Kid rides. Kid rides are gentle and smooth running with just the right amount of thrill for rst time riders. Family rides can accom-modate both adults and children which is perfect for children who are not ready to brave the rides alone. This includes rides such as the Americana Carousel, Looney Tooter Train, Wacky Worm Kid Coaster, and the Tea Cups.

Just inside the Red Gate (West) is where the Spectacular and Major rides are located. Spectacular rides are the most thrilling and exhilarating – NEW this year is the Freak Out. The Freak Out, manufactured by KMG –Netherlands will be the new stand out attraction at Butler Amusements in 2014.

This new ride boasts an energy e cient light package utilizing LED’s which produce

clear bright color while using 90% less power to oper-ate.

Towering at 70 feet, the Freak Out seats 16 persons and takes them on a thrilling journey into the sky! Pas-sengers are secured by over the shoulder harnesses as they dangle in expectation. Once the ride begins the seats slowly rotate as the entire boom begins to swing horizontally. Passengers swing over the midway direct-ly overhead of those watching from the front of the ride. The ride climax is reached as the boom reaches a height of over 40 feet in the air while the passenger seats rotate. Also featured this year is the high speed, multi-story, Zillerator Roller Coaster.

Please visit our website www.EvergreenFair.org for a complete list of rides, height requirements, coupons, safety and general information.

Daily Attractions & Displays

Snohomish County is pleased to honor the Schwarzmiller Family as this year’s Centennial Farm Family. Ernest Robert Albert Schwarzmiller, who went by E.R.A., immigrated to the U.S. from Germany (Berlin) along with his wife Cecelia Tu-verson, who was from Sweden. In 1903 they purchased what was to become the Schwarzmiller Farm in Lake Stevens, WA. They purchased a ¼ section (152 acres) of rough land, working hard for many years to clear it and put it into production growing grains. ERA and Cecelia had 2 girls and 3 boys– Louise, Hanna, Albert (Babe), Edward and Otto.

ERA was a well-known blacksmith, shoeing horses throughout the area. The blacksmith shop remains on the farm and is still home to the large bellows and his farrier tools in the carrier sitting ready to go back to work. He also raised certi ed seed potatoes. The family still has the stamp that was painted onto the burlap bags and the old potato cellar has “Schwarzmiller October 8, 1915” engraved on the concrete wall.

Their youngest son Otto went to college for a year to learn better ways of

farming. He returned to the farm in 1920 to take over the daily operations. The fol-lowing year the barn collapsed from snow load- in the famous 5-foot snowstorm that shut down Everett! Wood was hauled in on a buckboard from the Rucker Mill in Everett to rebuild the barn. A full buck-board of wood was $7.

Otto expanded the farm’s produc-tion and named the farm “Sleepy Hollow

Farm.” He raised purebred cattle and Chester White hogs that were a good lard pig that he sold to English’s restaurant in Everett. Otto continued to raise seed potatoes. They sprouted the potatoes to make sure they were good; those that didn’t sprout were cooked and fed to the pigs. Otto also had certi ed Guernsey dairy cattle but the lost them all except “Star” to TB. She was the only one that

survived. He rebuilt the herd and they milked 8 head by hand, sold milk to Darigold and later sold milk to Carnation Farms.

Today the farm continues to thrive as Renee Schwarzmiller and her husband Je have brought in new beef animals. They’ve added sheep production and are working on pasture improvements. They are putting in a habitat bu er along the bank of the Pilchuck River and are looking at additional ways to create sustainability and diversi cation. They have a goal of economic viability and keeping the farm in production for future generations for the Schwarzmiller family.

The turning of the century and the County’s Heritage 2000 Program prompted the beginning of a new annual recognition program for Snohomish County Centennial Farms. To qualify, farms must have been in constant production and under the same family ownership for 100 years or more. This annual award will be presented to the Schwarzmiller Family during the 2pm Opening Day Ceremony of the Evergreen State Fair on August 21st.
