Full microprocessor control

Putting the emphasis on reliabilityand ease of use Full digital control makes the ARL 9900 easyto use. It also ensures consistent resultsover many operations.

The microprocessor architecturecomprises clusters of microprocessors, microcontrollers and digital signal processorsconnected by full duplex links. They controlthe overall operation of the instrument, monitor several hundred status points everyfew seconds and direct the goniometer(s),integrated diffraction system andmonochromators functions.

The analyst’s instructions transmittedthrough the analytical software OXSAS areprocessed in the master microprocessor andsent to the appropriate cluster. The resultinganalytical data is displayed on the videoscreen. For convenience, current operationscan be followed on a synoptic panel.

Fixed monochromators

High speed simultaneous analysis Fixed channels offer fast analysis, highsensitivity and rapid processing as each oneis dedicated to detecting and analyzing justa single element. The ARL 9900 series canbe equipped with up to 32 monochromatorsfor simultaneous analysis or 24 of themwhen a goniometer is fitted.

Compact slit-crystal geometry optimizesthe sensitivity and spectral backgroundlevels to permit detection of elements atvery low concentrations. The latestdetectors ensure a wider linearity ofresponse and very precise analysis. In asimultaneous configuration there is no needof detector gas for all elements from Na.

Each monochromator has its owntemperature control system (to ± 0.1ºC)ensuring excellent stability of analysis. Forthe analysis of light elements, multilayersynthetic crystals are used. Adjustment ofpulse height discrimination, high voltageand deadtime correction are totallyprogrammed through the software.

Goniometers

Very precise sequential analysis The goniometers can be programmed toanalyze specific elements (quantitativeanalysis) or to scan the X-ray spectrum todetect elements present in a given sample(qualitative analysis). Two very fast andhighly accurate gearless goniometersallowing qualitative, quantitative andstandard-less analysis are offered for ARL9900 series instruments.

The availability of the SmartGonio™

distinguishes the ARL 9900 from itspredecessors. The SmartGonio™ allowsanalysis of elements from F to U. It is acompact goniometer using three crystalsand two detectors to provide a versatile andaffordable detection system. Up to threeSmartGonio™ can be fitted in the instrument.

Excellent repeatability over 24 hours, here for Cr and Ni in steel

The compactSmartGoniocovers F to U

Page 5: ARL 9900 IntelliPower Series ARL 9900 X-ray WorkStation

The F45 universal goniometer is thealternative when additional crystals andcollimators are required for specificapplications. Up to two universalgoniometers can be fitted.

Both goniometers provide high qualitysequential X-ray spectrometry as a result ofthe crystal and detector being positionedrapidly with great precision bymicroprocessors using Moiré fringetechnology. This design brings severalimportant advantages – Fast positioning – a slewing speed of up

to 4800° 2theta per minute is five timesfaster than a conventional goniometer andup to twenty times faster than a scanner.

– Automatic alignment of the theta/2thetaangular relationship between crystal anddetector – this alignment is performedelectronically by the microprocessor and, unlike conventional systems, nomechanical adjustments are needed.

– Rapid qualitative analysis – continuousdigital scanning allows fast acquisition ofspectra at speeds up to 320º/minute.Peak identification is automatic.

– No wear, no performance degradation –the absence of gears, hence of friction, makes them ‘no wear’ systems assuringconsistent excellent angular reproducibility(< ± 0.0002°) and precision (0.001°).

– High accuracy of peak positions (e.g.0.01° with LiF crystal) – analytical peaksare found exactly in their theoreticalpositions, a performance up to ten timesbetter than conventional systems.

– Independent rotation of crystal anddetectors allows two detectors to bemounted side by side. Secondarycollimators in front of each detectoroptimize count-rate or resolution.

– When specialized applications requirespecific crystals, up to nine of them canbe fitted on the universal goniometerallowing the analyst to choose the bestcrystal for each region of the X-rayspectrum. Up to four primary collimators(fine, medium, coarse, extra-coarse) areavailable in order to optimize resolutionor intensity.

Both goniometers offer full capabilityfor the analysis of non-routine elements. They can back up any of the fixed channelsand provide standard-less analysis whencoupled to appropriate software packages(e.g. QuantAS™ and Uniquant® with theuniversal goniometer and OptiQuant™ withthe SmartGonio™).

Goniometerprinciple ofoperation

• Angular positioning to ensure θ/2θ relationship between crystal anddetector is achieved through Moiré fringe optical encoders:- no friction- no wear!- excellent angular positioning accuracy

• Temperature regulation of crystals for best analytical stability

X-ray fluorescence spectrometers

with integrated XRD

capability

XRF and XRD capability in oneinstrumentX-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysisdetermines the elemental composition of asample but does not provide informationabout how the various elements arecombined together. Such mineralogicalinformation is only available through X-raydiffraction (XRD). In a typical crystallinesample, XRF might measure for example thetotal Ca concentration or the total Feconcentration. XRD permits analysis of thephases or compounds in crystallinematerials such as rocks, minerals and oxidematerials and products. So in the samesample, XRD takes the analysis a stagefurther and gives information about CaO,CaCO3, Ca(OH)2 contents and other Caphases or the levels of Fe phases, such asFeO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Fe3C and other Fephases. Therefore combining the results ofboth XRF and XRD techniques allows for abetter and more complete characterizationof any given crystalline sample.

Undertaking both types of analysis hastraditionally called for two separate X-rayinstruments, maintained and operated atsignificant cost to the user. But the integrationof innovative X-ray diffraction systems allowsboth techniques to be included in the sameARL 9900 instrument bringing significantadvantages to the user, e.g:• Only one sample introduction• Single user interface for both techniques, • Elemental and phase results merged into

one single analysis bulletin• Minimized floor space• No water cooler at mid power levels

Compact integratedXRD systemsProductive, precise, patented Our compact integrated XRD systemsare capable of making qualitative scans andquantitative analysis thanks to the highprecision of their Moiré fringe positioningmechanism. Accurate sample positioningand parallel beam X-ray geometry preventany sample alignment problems. Thebenefits of working under vacuum and in astable temperature environment are theexcellent sensitivity and repeatability ofanalysis, notably for sensitive phases likefree lime. Typical and documentedapplications are among others: • Free lime in clinker and in slags• Clinker phases (C3S, C2S, C3A and C4AF)

for which the ClinkerQuant calibration isavailable

• Fe2+ determination in sinters• Iron phases in DRI (Direct Reduced Iron)

processes• Phases related to electrolysis of

aluminium• Other mineral and mining applications

A dedicated version of our compactIntegrated XRD system is called Free LimeChannel. It provides the same performanceat a fraction of the cost and still allows freelime determination in clinker and slags, limestone additions in cement, hot mealcalcination monitoring and quartz in rawmaterials.

Integration of XRF and XRD in the same instrument: one sample, one instrument, one analysis for two techniques

Full integrated X-ray diffractionUnique, fast, patentedThe innovative NeXRD, a full X-raydiffraction goniometer for phase analysisintegrated into the ARL 9900 X-rayWorkStation, provides qualitative scans andquantitative analysis thanks to the highprecision of its Moiré fringe positioningmechanisms. Accurate sample positioningand the temperature stabilized environmentof the ARL 9900 produce excellent stabilityof analysis. Working under vacuum permitsthe use of a cobalt anode X-ray tube thatsignificantly reduces fluorescence of ironwhich is common with copper anode tubes.Avoiding iron fluorescence minimizes thespectral background and greatly improvesthe peak to background ratio. The NeXRDsystem is also distinctive in its ability toobtain a full diffraction scan for quantitativeanalyses, useful for process controlmonitoring and phase investigation ofunknown materials. Full pattern quantitativephase analysis results can be obtainedwithin 5 minutes, made possible byautomatic interpretation of the XRD patternand direct reporting through VisualCRYSTAL® software. Coupling these uniqueXRD capabilities with elementaldetermination by XRF provides totalinstrument analytical capabilities that aretruly one of a kind.

ApplicationsSeparate application notes are availabledescribing how the advantages of a combinedinstrument can be applied to processmonitoring in industries such as cement, ironand steel, aluminum as well as other miningprocesses involving iron ores, limestone, slags, sinters and beach sands among others.

The X-ray WorkStation can submit XRFresults and phases quantification by XRD ina single analysis bulletin

Benefits of the ARL 9900 X-ray WorkStation• Only one sample introduction• Easier integration into the process control• Faster analysis• XRF and XRD results in a single analytical report• No compromise in XRF and XRD performance• Can be used as XRF only, XRD only or both• Unmatched stability thanks to vacuum and temperature

Quantitative analysis

Accuracy made easy Analytical programmes and calibrations aredefined with the help of the on-line AnalyticalAssistant. Calibration curves are built using themulti-variable regression (MVR) programme.

Correction models are used to minimizethe influence of interfering elements in multi-component matrices and achieve betteraccuracy of analysis. These models are:- Line overlap correction- Additive correction on intensities- Additive correction on concentrations- Multiplicative correction on intensities- Multiplicative correction on concentrations- Multiplicative and additive corrections on

concentrations- COmprehensive LAchance (COLA) with 3

term alphas to be used with the NBSGSC fundamental parameters programme, which can simulate analytical calibrations for homogeneous materials. Inter-element correction factors (theoretical alphas) are calculated and used as knowncoefficients in the MVR. This minimizesthe number of standards necessary toproduce calibrations and improves theaccuracy of analysis.
