A look at the process chainARKU’s InfoDays 2017 focused on combined systems – and an
anniversary
Baden-Baden, 08.06.2017. The leveling and deburring expert ARKU is prepared for the networked industry. This year’s InfoDays for leveling and deburring demonstrated how they were able to do so. From the 15th to the 19th of May 2017, ARKU in Baden-Baden showcased a triple linked line for the first time. This covered all of the crucial processing steps, such as leveling and measuring the actually flatness. In addition to live demonstrations at the exhibit, the InfoDays also included tours around the machine park. Visitors had the opportunity to experience the processing quality first hand by running their own parts on a variety of machines. The InfoDays 2017 also focused on 50 years of leveling technology from ARKU. The company celebrates this anniversary with a look back at its own history.
Networked production was a key topic at the five-day event in
Baden-Baden. The central exhibit at this year’s InfoDays was a
complete line of three linked systems – a construction that one of
ARKU’s customers is already operating successfully.
Its core components consists of an EdgeBreaker® 2000 Plus
deburring machine, a FlatMaster® 55 80 precision leveler along
with the FlatJack® automatic flatness control. With this linked
system, ARKU covers all central material preparation processing
steps with one single line. The EdgeBreaker® deburrs and rounds
the panels on both sides. The FlatMaster® transforms these into
flat panels almost entirely free of internal stresses. Finally, the
FlatJack® control system checks the flatness of the pieces. All of
the machines operate fully automatically and in sync with each
other thanks to the integrated control system. This central
computer is a variable customer interface (VCI) and enables the

units to communicate with each other. As a big advantage, the
machines can be deactivated quickly in the event of faults.
Portfolio with a historyIn addition to high parts quality and process efficiency, the line
also represents the company’s consistent portfolio expansion.
“Every machine represents a milestone in our company’s history.
ARKU sold its first precision leveler exactly 50 years ago. Since
then we have continued expanding our expertise in this area”,
emphasizes Albert Reiss, Managing Partner at ARKU. The
FlatMaster® hydraulic precision leveler was developed in 2005
and represents the results of decades of experience in leveling.
The hydraulic overload protection enables it to reliably
compensate for sudden overloads, protecting the system. 2015
saw the launch of the EdgeBreaker® deburring machine, another
important step in the edge conditioning process. The machine
removes any burrs and unevenness from both sides of the
material, ensuring smooth parts. Since 2016 the FlatJack® has
been available to measure the flatness with a precision range as
low as a tenth of a millimeter upon request. Visitors could also
experience other successes from the company’s 50-year tradition
at the InfoDays. ARKU invited the guests to discover its history
with extensive information.
Sheet metal processing in the digital ageARKU is already firmly focused on the future of automated
production. “Industry 4.0 will play an important role in the sheet
metal processing sector. This will result in increasingly networked
processes and we will offer the right solutions”, explains Albert
Reiss. “That is why our systems can be linked to form a
seamless chain. Therefore, they enable efficient leveling and
deburring in a single comprehensive process.”
A major benefit for customers: this makes subsequent work such
as welding or coating even more effective. In addition to higher

parts quality, manufacturers also profit from the reproducible
results. These consistent materials are a product of the
programmable control systems for all of the units. The systems
store the process parameters which can be accessed when
needed. Furthermore, the complete line also enables shorter
cycle times. As a benefit, the FlatJack® automated flatness
control reduces the time-consuming measuring work after
leveling.
Linking the systems also results in less handling. A conveyor
transports the cut parts directly from one machine to the next,
eliminating manual intervention. Visitors could convince
themselves of the benefits during live, customer-specific
demonstrations. In addition to the complete line, ARKU also
presented individual deburring machines such as the
EdgeBreaker®, the EdgeGrinder® and the EdgeRacer® in
action. Guests also had the opportunity to bring their own parts to
be leveled and/or deburred by the systems.
