All-Star Alumni Today 3 former Travs will take part in the Major League All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis. Rice Futures Although no Travelers player took part in the Major League Futures Game in Minnesota, Travs pitching coach Pat Rice was the pitching coach of the U.S. Futures Team. Rucinski’s Rise Right hander Drew Rucinski became the 5th Travs pitcher called straight to the Major Leagues last Tuesday, and made his ML debut allowing 2 runs in the 9th inning of a victory at Texas. He held a 4-0 record with a 1.28 ERA (6 er/42 ip) in his last 6 starts and just 32 base hits allowed with 35 strikeouts and 2 walk. Rucinski fired the only 9-inning, complete-game shutout in the Texas League this year on June 14 against NW Arkansas to begin this streak. Undrafted out of Ohio State, Rucinski spent nearly 2 full seasons pitching for Rockford in the Frontier League before signing with the Angels last August. Transactioning The Los Angeles Angels made 15 transactions in the past 17 days af- fecting the Travelers roster. Rucinski’s call up to LA was coupled with Cam Bedrosian being optioned back to the Travs after 3 days with the Angels. David Carpenter was also transferred to Salt Lake. During Monday’s off-day, Bedrosian was called up to Los Angeles for the second time this season. Kevin Johnson was activated from the disabled list to replace Bedrosian on the roster. Last Sunday, Michael Roth was optioned back to Arkan- sas after spending 1 day on the Angels’ 25-man ML roster. For a full list of the Travs transactions this season turn to the last page of notes. Roth’s Resuscitation Two months after being removed from the Angels 40-man roster and exposed to waivers, Michael Roth was selected to the 40-man roster again and called up to the Major League team where he pitched 2 innings on Saturday and earned the win in the Angels’ 11-5 win over Houston. The similarities in Roth’s call ups to Los Angeles in 2014 and 2013 are striking. Both years, Roth was called up on a Saturday when the Travs were scheduled to play the RockHounds. Both years Roth pitched 2 innings the day he was called up against Houston and earned the win as Albert Pujols drove in the winning run. Designated To Swing The Travs have used 18 different designated hitters this season. As a whole Travelers DH’s are batting .242 (74-306) with 6 home runs and 28 RBI. Homer Watch The Travs have a league-low 48 home runs, with 17 hit against Spring- field representing 35 percent of the team’s home run total. Pitchers have allowed the 2nd- fewest home runs this year (50). The last 4-game series played at Dickey-Stephens Park between the Travs and Cardinals included 7 home run by Arkansas hitters. Roadwork The Travelers have found hitting and scoring on the road much easier than at Dickey-Stephens Park. In 46 road games they’re averaging 4.8 runs and hold a .275 team batting average, .393 OBP and 32 home runs. In 47 home games they’re averaging just 2.7 runs a game with a .210 batting average, 16 home runs and .291 OBP. They’ve also been shutout 11 times at home. Golden Gloves Although they’ve committed 28 errors committed in the past 29 games, the Travs’ 68 errors are the fewest in the Texas League. They also hold the highest fielding percentage at .980, which is .003 higher than any other Texas League team. They’ve also put together streaks of 53 errorless innings and 91 innings without an error during April. The Travs’ total of just 33 unearned runs allowed this year is nearly half the average of the rest of the Texas League teams. The Travs have played 46-of-92 games without making an error. June’s Awards The Travelers named Brian Hernandez as the Travs’ batter and fielder of the month of June. Coasting and Rolling—There have been numerous highs and lows for the Travs recently as evidenced by the following run of streaks. From June 26 through June 30, the Travs rode a 5-game winning streak, but then dropped 8 in a row from July 2 through July 10 which has been followed by their current 3-game winning streak.

Both Ends Of The Candle—The Travs snapped their longest losing streak since August 2011 on Saturday at Tulsa with a 7-3 victory in which they led from the first inning. Not only had they dropped 8 straight, but opponents had led for 32 consecutive innings until Brian Hernandez’s RBI fielder’s choice in the 1st inning gave the Travs the lead on Friday. With just 17 runs scored during the losing streak the Travs batted .190 (48-253).

Doubleheader Dippity Doo—The Travs have dropped the last 3 doubleheader games they’ve been scheduled for and are 1-8 in the last 9 doubleheader games since sweeping a pair from Frisco on April 7.

All-Star Alumni—Today 3 former Travs will take part in the Major League All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis. Mike Trout (2011) was named to start in centerfield for the American League, while Francisco Rodriguez (2002) will pitch in relief for the Na-tional League. Although Garrett Richards (2011) did not win the final vote, finishing second to the White Sox Chris Sale, former Travs shortstop Erick Aybar (2005) was named as an injury replacement for the AL squad.

Rice Futures—Although no Travelers player took part in the Major League Futures Game in Minnesota, Travs pitching coach Pat Rice was the pitching coach of the U.S. Futures Team.

Rucinski’s Rise—Right hander Drew Rucinski became the 5th Travs pitcher called straight to the Major Leagues last Tuesday, and made his ML debut allowing 2 runs in the 9th inning of a victory at Texas.

During Monday’s off-day, Bedrosian was called up to Los Angeles for the second time this season. Kevin Johnson was activated from the disabled list to replace Bedrosian on the roster. Last Sunday, Michael Roth was optioned back to Arkan-sas after spending 1 day on the Angels’ 25-man ML roster. For a full list of the Travs transactions this season turn to the last page of notes.

Roth’s Resuscitation—Two months after being removed from the Angels 40-man roster and exposed to waivers, Michael Roth was selected to the 40-man roster again and called up to the Major League team where he pitched 2 innings on Saturday and earned the win in the Angels’ 11-5 win over Houston.

Designated To Swing—The Travs have used 18 different designated hitters this season. As a whole Travelers DH’s are batting .242 (74-306) with 6 home runs and 28 RBI.

Homer Watch—The Travs have a league-low 48 home runs, with 17 hit against Spring-field representing 35 percent of the team’s home run total. Pitchers have allowed the 2nd-fewest home runs this year (50). The last 4-game series played at Dickey-Stephens Park between the Travs and Cardinals included 7 home run by Arkansas hitters.

DREW RUCINSKI—25 year old right hander is making his 18th appearance in 2014, 45th career affiliated Minor League appearance.

In his last 6 starts, Rucinski is 4-0 with a 1.29 ERA (6 er/42 ip). Batters are hit-ting .200 against Drew and he’s thrown 362 strikes out of 530 (68 %) pitches.

Drew comes off his first Major League appearance on Thursday in Arlington finish-ing the Angels’ 15-6 victory over the Texas Rangers. He was scheduled to start that day for the Travs at Tulsa, but was selected to the Angels’ 40-man roster .

In his last appearance for the Travs on July 4, Rucinski held a 5-3 lead after leaving the game in the 6th inning. Frisco came from behind against the Travs and sent Drew to a no-decision.

Previously in a 3-2 victory on June 27 at Frisco, he allowed a run just 2 batters into the game on a triple and single before retiring a batter. However just 6 of the next 24 batters reached base, and the Travs gave Rucinski the lead in the 2nd inning.

On June 22, in a 4-3 win over Springfield, Rucinski retired 13 of the first 14 batters

before allowing his first base hit in the 5th inning. No runner reached 3rd base against him.

Drew fired the first complete-game shutout of his career June 7 in a 3-0 victory over NW Arkansas at Dickey-Stephens Park. It was the first 9-inning, CG in the Texas League this year and the first for the Travs since Matt Shoemaker in July 2011. He retired 23 of the last 25 batters for a 3-0 win over Sam Selman.

Acquired by Angels as a MiLB Free Agent on August 8, 2013 after pitching most of 2013 and all of 2012 with the Rockford Riverhawks of the independent Frontier League.

CHAMPIONSHIP CLINCHER—Was the top pitcher for Inland Empire during the Angels’ single-A club’s run to the 2013 California League championship with a 3-0 record and 2.79 ERA in 3 starts. Rucinski got the start and the win in the 66ers Championship clincher allowing just 1 run in 6.22 innings against San Jose. FRONTIER MAN—Rucinski was undrafted out of Ohio State University and signed his first professional contract with Rockford in June 2011. After he made his pro debut in a 2-inning appearance, Rucinski signed with the Indians and spent the rest of that season in Cleveland’s organization. When Rucinski was released by Cleveland at 2012 Spring Training he signed with Rockford.

A veteran of 30 seasons in professional baseball, Travs manager Phillip Wellman is back in a familiar role as manager where he owns a 862-939 record in 15 minor league seasons, including eight years as a manager in the Southern League with the Mississippi Braves (2007-2010) and Chattanooga Lookouts (1999, 2001-2003).

Most recently Wellman was the hitting coach for the Springfield Cardinals from 2011 through 2013 and tutored Texas League Players of the Year (Matt Adams - 2011 and Oscar Taveras - 2012). Wellman, a native of Bulverde, Texas, managed the M-Braves to the 2008 Southern League Championship.

Wellman went into coaching in 1988 with the Atlanta Braves after the end of a 4-year playing career as an outfielder and infielder in the minors. He took his first managerial post in 1992 with the Gulf Coast Orioles and managed four years in Rookie-level affiliated baseball. His first full-season managing job came with Winston-Salem in 1996 in the Carolina League beginning his eight-year stint in the Cincinnati Reds farm system.
