The Arkansas State Volleyball program has racked up

238 vic to ries at the Con vo ca tion Cen ter in the 24 sea sons

it has played in the are na. ASU has an amazing 238-65

record (.785) in the build ing since its open ing in 1987. How-

ever, the Red Wolves have found a second home... the

newly remodeld Health, Physical Education and Sport Sci-

ence (HPESS) facility on campus. The facility was origi-

nally rennovated to serve as a practice facility for the

A-State men’s and women’s basketball teams, but its size

and setup proved to be the perfect volleyball environment.

Arkansas State began play in the HPESS in 2010, starting

the new home court off with a 5-2 (.714) record.

The team has had un de feat ed home records in five

seasons, in clud ing 2004, when the team was 14-0 at the

Convocation Center. The building was built in 1987 at a cost

of $19 mil lion and paid for pri ma ri ly by the state of

Arkansas. The 10,563-seat multi-pur pose fa cil i ty has

earned its ti tle as the “Show place of North east Ar kan sas”

over the past 15 years.

The Convocation Cen ter is not only home to the Red

Wolves vol ley ball pro gram, but also the Ar kan sas State

men’s and wom en’s bas ket ball pro grams and the in door

home of the A-State track and field pro gram.

Beginning in 1990, the Con vo ca tion Cen ter played host

to sev en straight con fer ence post-sea son tour na ments, in -

clud ing six straight Sun Belt Con fer ence Vol ley ball Cham -

pi on ships. In 1997, for the first time since ASU joined the

Sun Belt Con fer ence, the league's post-sea son tour na ment

was held in a place oth er than Jonesboro.

ASU won five of those seven con fer ence tournaments

it hosted, go ing 21-4 in tour na ment ac tion at the Con vo ca -

tion Cen ter.

Arkansas State has had crowds of over 1,000 for a vol -

ley ball match eight times, including a record 4,140 for a

match against the University of Mem phis on Nov. 25, 1995,

that was part of a men's bas ket ball/vol ley ball doubleheader.

ASU went un de feat ed in home match es in back-to-back

seasons in 1988 (15-0) and 1989 (12-0) and won its first

three home matches of the 1990 season to post a 28-match

home winning streak the longest in program history. ASU

has gone through a season with just one home loss five

times, including two years ago in 2009. The oth er four came

in 1994 (11-1), 1995 (15-1), 1999 (14-1) and 2003 (11-1).

Not only does the Convocation Cen ter play host to

Arkansas State ath let ic home events, the build ing also at-

tracts peo ple from all over North east Ar kan sas and the Mid-

South region for a va ri ety of other events—from concerts to

con ven tions, area busi ness ex po si tions and con fer enc es,

ban quets and uni ver si ty and high school com mence ments

as well.

The Sun Belt Conference enters its 36th season in 2011-2012 with severalconstants evident during the over three decade span of the league. Suc-cess, progress, and academic excellence have always been at the core ofthe league and in the second decade of the 21st century those constantscould not be more clear.

The Sun Belt Conference was founded on August 4, 1976 with New Or-leans, South Alabama, Georgia State, Jacksonville, North Carolina-Char-lotte and South Florida participating in four men's sports: basketball, golf, soccer and tennis.

With the onset of the 21st century the Sun Belt Conference began spon-soring football at the Division I-A level (now known as the Football BowlSubdivision) in 2001 and generated an automatic bowl tie-in for its confer-ence champion in the New Orleans Bowl.

Prior to the 2001 season only Louisiana-Lafayette had competed at the Di-vision I-A level for the entirety of its program's history. New membersNorth Texas, Middle Tennessee and New Mexico State would take on thetask of maturing into I-A programs along with Arkansas State and footballonly members Idaho and Louisiana-Monroe.

The conference's automatic berth into the New Orleans Bowl gave theleague credibility, but wins would be needed to show that the league couldcontend at the highest level of the game. North Texas carried that respon-sibility well in the early years of Sun Belt Conference football. The MeanGreen would represent the league for four consecutive seasons in theNew Orleans Bowl.

One of the first shining moments in Sun Belt football history came in thesecond New Orleans Bowl in 2002 when North Texas defeated Confer-ence USA co-champion Cincinnati 24-19.

More memorable moments would soon follow, but not before the league'smembership took on additional changes. Utah State joined the leaguebriefly as a football playing member but departed along with Idaho andNew Mexico State following the 2004 season. Troy joined the league as afootball only in 2004 and would join as an all-sports member soon there-after. Florida Atlantic joined initially as a football only member in 2005 andwould also enter competition in all sports a couple of years later. FIU, aleague member since the late 1990s, began competition in football in 2005and WKU, a longtime league member, began competition in 2009.Louisiana-Monroe, a founding member of the football league, would joinas all-sports member as well.

As the Sun Belt Conference evolved with new members and new foundsuccess - the league earned two bowl berths for the first time in 2004 - thestate of the Football Bowl Subdivision would also evolve. The Sun BeltConference entered the ranks of the Bowl Championship Series when theBCS restructured prior to the 2006 season.

The Sun Belt Conference now found itself as one of 31 NCAA conferencesthat sponsor multiple sports, but the league was now one of only 11 to par-ticipate in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

With that lofty standing, expectations for the Sun Belt Conference are ashigh as ever and the league and its member institutions have consistentlydelivered in the past few years.

Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision coali-tion, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA's 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voiceon some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will alwayshave a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation andguidelines.

The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote theleague and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a

new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in January of 2009 that will re-sult in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Additionally,ESPN televised the conference's men's basketball championship game forthe 30th straight season in 2010, marking its longest affiliation with anyconference in the country.

The conference's regional television partnership with Comcast/CharterSports Southeast (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables livetelecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The additionof volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference's television packagehas resulted in more national and regional television exposure for theleague than at any time in its history.

The Sun Belt Conference has also partnered with JumpTV Sports, Inc. todeliver a full-service, customized, public and premium website to providefans with a broad range of real-time information and content about theconference's athletic teams. The Sun Belt is one of the few conferences inthe nation to provide video highlights and features on its website fromeach of the league's respective championships. This technology serves asa great recruiting tool for schools by enabling anyone in the world with in-ternet access to view the conference's championship events.

Success has been easy to find in recent years.

Over the last four seasons the Sun Belt Conference has represented itselfwell in the football postseason. In fact the Sun Belt Conference boasts awinning record of 4-3 in its seven bowl appearances in the last four sea-sons. With Middle Tennessee's victory in the R+L Carriers New OrleansBowl, the Sun Belt Conference has now won four bowl games in its lastseven appearances.

Since 2005 football season, the first year after conference realignment, the Sun Belt Conference ranks 6th out of 11 conferences in compositebowl game winning percentage. The Sun Belt Conference set an all-timeleague high for players selected in the NFL Draft in 2010 with seven totalplayers selected - topping the previous record of five in 2007.

The world has taken notice of the Sun Belt Conference as well. Proof ofthat comes as the league now has two automatic tie-ins to postseasonbowl games. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl recently extended itsagreements with the Sun Belt Conference ensuring that a Sun Belt teamwill play in that bowl game through 2013 (the league has sent a team tothat game every year since the game's inception in 2001). The Sun BeltConference also signed an agreement this past offseason with the GMACBowl, played annually in Mobile, Alabama, that will ensure a Sun Beltteam plays in that bowl game through 2013. The league also has second-ary tie-ins with the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl, the St. Petersburg Bowl andthe PapaJohns.com Bowl.

There has been no shortage of success in the league's other sports aswell in recent years.

the sun belt conferenceThe Sun Belt Conference has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Base-ball Tournament for 22 consecutive seasons. Since 2000 the Sun BeltConference has sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament in a seasonsix times - that is six times in the last decade that the Sun Belt has beenworthy of having three teams in the NCAA Tournament.

In women's basketball, Sun Belt Conference ranked in the top half of thefinal league RPI rankings for the 2009-10 season - making it the 12th con-secutive season that the Sun Belt Conference has placed in the top half ofleague RPI. Most impressively In six of those 12 seasons, Sun Belt Con-ference women's basketball has placed in the national top 10 for RPI. TheSun Belt Conference has also sent multiple teams to the Women's NCAABasketball Championship in two of the last four season. This past seasonUALR and Middle Tennessee both represented the league in the NCAApostseason.

Men's basketball has seen noted highlights as well in recent years, withnone greater than Ty Rodger's magical last second three-point shot asWKU defeated No. 5 seed Drake in the first round of the NCAA Men'sBasketball Championship in 2008. The Hilltoppers would go on to reachthe Sweet 16 that season and followed up with a trip to the second roundthe following year. South Alabama also reached the NCAA Men's Basket-ball Championship in 2008 as the Jaguars qualified for an at-large bid.

One of the nation's all-time greatest softball programs resides in the SunBelt Conference as Louisiana-Lafayette has advanced to the NCAAWomen's College World Series on five occasions. Most recently, theRagin' Cajuns played in the annuals WCWS in 2008.

The Denver women's golf team has been among the nation's best for anumber of years as well. The Pioneers held a national ranking throughoutthe entire 2009 season and capped the year with its first-ever regionalchampionship, winning the NCAA East Regional at the Mark Bostick GolfCourse in Gainesville, Fla. Denver came away with a top-five finish in thenational competition, taking fifth place at the 2009 NCAA National Champi-onship.

Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individual accom-plishments, but in the realm of academic excellence nearly every Sun BeltConference school is currently graduating its student-athletes at a ratehigher than its respective school's student body.

For the third consecutive year Sun Belt Conference student-athletestopped the previous year's record number of Commissioner's List and Ac-ademic Honor Roll awards winners. 1,700 Sun Belt student-athletesearned a GPA over 3.0 for the previous school year and were named to ei-ther the Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll or Sun Belt Commissioner's List.

Sun Belt schools combined to have 756 student-athletes land on the Com-missioner's List, which honors all student-athletes recording a 3.5 GPA orbetter during the 2008-09 academic year. The league also had a total of944 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll, which isawarded to those maintaining a 3.0-3.49 GPA.

The total of 1,700 student-athletes that were honored tops the previoushighs of 1,503 set during the 2007-08 school year and 1,429 for the 2006-07 school year.

Prominent Sun Belt alumni include former United States Secretary ofState Condoleezza Rice (Denver), NFL Hall of Fame football player"Mean" Joe Greene (North Texas), Florida Marlins All-Star baseball playerLuis Gonzalez (South Alabama), Boston Red Sox baseball player MikeLowell (MLB All-Star and 2007 MLB World Series MVP, FIU), former mem-ber of the United States Senate and House of Representatives JohnBreaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw(Louisiana-Monroe), and actor Andy Garcia (FIU).

The conference's first 34 years have also produced numerous individualnational champions along with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell,Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (FIU). Old Dominion's Anne Donovan, who received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation's top women'sbasketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic goldmedal in 1984 and helped the Lady Monarchs capture the national cham-pionship in 1985.

Those who have not visited the campus of Arkansas StateUniversity in the last five or 10 years would be shocked atthe school’s appearance today. So much on campus is tiedto athletics. ASU Stadium is the gathering site for Saturdaysand excitement surrounding each game can be felt for miles. The sights, the smells, the sounds of football.

There is so much construction and new projects on cam-pus. The school looks . . . and is . . . a modern educationalinstitution that has kept up with technology and studentneeds as much, if not more, than most schools in the na-tion. A student center addition anchors the campus, and anew student recreation and wellness center was completedlast fall.

New campus housing has recently been completed, in-cluding a “Collegiate Park” apartment complex, coastal-typesoft-colored housing throughout campus, and a new dorm. There is a new Alumni Center and construction of a newoverpass connecting the campus to local businesses isabout to become a reality. Jones-

boro, home of Arkansas

State University, weighs in as the largest city

in Northeast Arkansas. As a matter of fact, if you form a

triangle by connecting Little Rock, St. Louis and Memphis,

Jonesboro stands out as the largest met ro pol i tan city in

what amounts to a 17,000 square mile triangular area.

Jonesboro is a great city of 60,000, and is always

ready to welcome incoming ASU students from the mo-

ment they arrive in town. The booming community has ma-

tured over the past half century into a regional center for

cultural, educational, industrial, commercial, agricultural,

communication, transportation, recreational and medical

interests. It contains almost every convenience of a big

city and every comfort of a small town.

The community is alive with cultural events such as

the art exhibitions, theatrical and musical productions, not

only on campus but in the city itself through the Jones-

boro Fine Arts Council, NEA Foundation of Arts, the Forum

and the Northeast Arkansas Symphony. One highlight is

the annual Hispanic celebration when downtown Main

Street is transformed into a festive explosion of Hispanic

music, food and cultural activity.

Jonesboro is also the medical hub of northeast

Arkansas and southeast Missouri, with two major hospi-

tals and countless medical professionals. The city is also

a shopping mecca, offering a modern business district as

well as quaint downtown antique shops and restaurants.

The $100 million Mall at Turtle Creek recently opened with

more than 100 stores.

One of the five largest cities in Arkansas, Jonesboro is

located between the vast and fertile Mississippi River and

the cultural and scenic richness of the Ozark Mountains. It

is nestled about 70 miles west of Memphis, Tennessee, on

the gentle slopes of Crowley’s Ridge.

Jonesboro is a comfortable one hour drive from Mem-

phis, two hours from Little Rock and four hours from St.

Louis. The city and University have meshed resources in

recent years and have truly become the “capital” of the

northeast quadrant of the state.

Northeast Arkansas is a recreation haven for the per-

son who enjoys water sports, fishing, hunting, and boating

as well as the joys of unspoiled nature. Jonesboro and the

surrounding area have an abundance of lakes, rivers,

ponds, streams and forests to serve as nature’s play-

grounds for the avid outdoors person.

And, Jonesboro, ranked by Forbes.com as the 27th

“best small place to live” is a nice place to call home.
