STATE DEPUTIES REPORT MICHAEL KIEFFER

STATE DEPUTY

Our fraternal year is nearly over and I would like to thank everyone who has made this year a success. Now please thank your wives for supporting you. Without them we would have a tough time getting to where we are today. As I write this it is two weeks before publication of the newsletter. It is April 15th, tax day and the day they bombed the Boston Marathon. Well, my taxes are done, and I hope we have all taken time out to pray for those affected by the bombing in Boston. Your State Officers, Program Directors/Chairmen, and the Convention Committee are all busy trying to prepare the best Convention ever. Now is the time for you and your councils to prepare for the 2014 Convention in Russellville. Don’t wait until 2014 to think about Resolutions, Per Capita or Delegates. I had several councils that had 1st degree knights that wanted to be alternate delegates. As you know many alternate delegates turn into main delegates. A delegate needs to be a 3rd degree member to vote. Get them to a 2nd and 3rd degree so they can participate in next year’s convention! As of April 15th we are at 56.43% of our membership goal and need 187 new members. In other words each council needs to bring in 3 new members. Some councils could do that, some might have a hard time doing that, and some councils have not brought in a new member this year. Those councils who have not brought in a new member are not necessarily small rural councils. We also have a couple councils who have fewer members than they started the year with, due to suspensions. If you suspend one member you should to recruit two. We need to talk to our new Catholics from RCIA. We need to look at our graduates and newcomers to your parish. There are men out there that want to be knights, but you have to ask them. One Member, per Council, per Month! Remember to complete the paper work for the Year of Faith and send it in to Supreme. Please also conduct program, participate in a 1st degree and fill out the paper work so that your Grand Knight, Program Director and Membership Director are eligible to enter the drawing for the trip to Italy in October. Your chances are much better than the lottery, and it would be great to have someone from Arkansas win!

STATE CHAPLAIN FATHER BILL ELSER

As I prepare to go the annual state convention in Jonesboro, I am eager to hear encouragement to recruit new Knights to the order and to do so myself. We do need to grow the Order, for the good of the Order and the Councils who will benefit from more members and fistly, for the good of the Catholic gentlemen whose faith will hopefully grow through participation in the Knights of Columbus. In this newsletter, while we are in the midst of the Easter Season, I would like to offer encouragement for all of us to answer our baptismal call to evangelize and bring people to the Lord and his Church. At every gathering of the Knights at the Supreme level, I have heard our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, and our Supreme Chaplain, Archbishop Lori urge us and all Knight of Columbus to participate in the "New Evangelization" which challenges Catholics to give witness to their faith on a day to day basis and participate in ongoing catechesis so as to be able to speak credibly and passionately about the Catholic faith. I urge my brother Knights to be active firstly, to bring people to the Catholic faith and secondly to encourage them, when they are able to do so, to join and participate in the Knights of Columbus. When people do make a profession of faith as Catholics, I am always eager to plug them into the life of the Church. The Knights of Columbus is a great way to help new and experienced Catholics to grow as faith-filled followers of Jesus. Please be active in this effort on an ongoing basis. Vivat Jesus

STATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR PHILIP SAVAGE

Worthy State Chaplain, Worthy State Officers, Worthy Supreme Representative, Worthy Past State Deputies, Worthy Fourth Degree Master, Worthy Insurance Agents, Worthy District Deputies, Worthy Program Directors and Chairpersons and Worthy Brother Knights: “Don’t Bonk!” Years ago, a commercial for Power Bars showed a marathon runner way ahead of the rest of the pack, stumbling and gasping for breath, he could see the ribbon marking the finish line and he knew he was going to win! He was so tired and worn out when he hit the finish line, he did not have enough energy to break the ribbon. In fact, the ribbon bounced him back like it was a rubber band. This is my message for everyone today. “Don’t Bonk!” Finish the race, don’t stop at the finish line! As State Program Director, I know all council’s do many great things, but I do not get to see them because many will not enter to win any of the state awards. When Forrest Gump ran the football in the game, he ran through the end zone and kept on running through the tunnel and out of the stadium. Some of the pros in Golf Digest will tell you when practicing for a tournament, play more than just 18 holes to get ready. Play 22-24 holes so your body won’t get conditioned to only play 18 holes. Are you looking for the finish line instead of the adventure along the way? When your council sponsors a poster contest and you have given out the prizes to the winners, is that the finish line? No, programs like that should be talked about! Enter to win a state award! So I say to all the councils, “Don’t Bonk!” If you see your council doing great things, share it with other councils. Enter to win one of the State Council Service Program Awards! You win a very nice plaque and your program will go up against all other councils on the international level; and when your council wins an award for a program, some councils may say, Wow, that is a great idea! So in essence, your council is doing great and your council is helping other councils to do great as well.

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN REPORT OZRO N BARCLAY

STATE CHAIRMAN, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

First, I would like to thank our State Deputy, Michael Kieffer, for re-appointing me to this position, and for his rapid approvals for grants from the Pennies From Heaven Fund. I also thank our State Secretary, Adrian Dominguez, and State Treasurer, Michael Heathcott, for working closely with me in expediting the these requests. I have also advised State Deputy, Michael Kieffer, that I will remain as the Chairman of the State Pennies From Heaven if he so desires. Beginning May 1, 2012 through April 15, 2013, there were 27 requests for these funds totaling $7,250 from 15 councils who contributed $100.00 to $300.00 from their funds when possible. These requests ranged from total fire destruction of home and belongings, health problems as cancers, brain operations, strokes and accidents, both auto and motorcycle, and logging related and rehab of a 15 year old log cabin home with major damage owned by totally disabled husband since 2006 and wife who is on early social security retirement. A few examples of these requests are:

1. A 3 year old girl, suffering from Optic Nerve Hyperplasisa lives with grandparents, who also have a 20 year old autistic son living with them. Grandparents need funds that will enable them to purchase a Braille Label for computer so that they can help the girl learn to read.

2. A single mother with two young daughters (ages 10 & 14) has stage 4 colon cancer, needed help with

living and medical expenses.

3. An 8 month old baby diagnosed with Failure to Thrive. Family needs help with hospital expenses.

4. A father was trying to burn debris in yard. He was going to use gasoline in a can to start the fire when the gasoline caught fire traveling to the can which exploded covering four year old son with the burning gasoline, resulting in 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Family needed help with hospital expenses.

5. A young service man and his family stationed in Yuma, Arizona traveled to Paris, Arkansas to attend his

Mother’s funeral. Immediately upon arriving back in Yuma, he was requested to return to Paris as his Step-father had died. He now needed funds to enable him and his family to attend the funeral and return back to his base.

6. Husband was declared to be totally disabled in 2006 from a stroke on his side and losing his vision in

right eye and partial vision in left eye. He now has a spinal disease and Lupus. Mother now has income from early social security retirement. They live in a 15 year old Log Cabin home that has greatly

degenerated with the flooring being rotten with black mold in two places, the oak timber are shrinking so that there are large cracks needing chinking and sealing. Varmints have gained access to attic, front door needs replaced and windows repaired. The council has neither the resources nor talent to complete repairs.

The State Deputy and I congratulate those councils who have responded to help their unfortunate members of their communities. These acts of assistance fulfill the principle of the First Degree - Charity. Remember, look not only to your councils or parish for those in need, but to any one in your community who needs a helping hand, whether they are Catholic or not. You as Grand Knights of a Council must seek out these people and give them this helping hand. Brother Grand Knights, please remember when submitting requests for a grant to send it to the Pennies From Heaven chairman by an e-mail rather than by snail mail. Also, be as short as possible in writing the request giving the name of the family, how many children and their ages, what happened, to whom the check should be made payable, and your home address so that the check may be mailed tp you for presentation. Remember that if the request is mailed by snail mail, it will take at least three days or more to be received, then attached to an e-mail to be sent to the State Deputy for approval of the recommended amount. As a collective body we need every Council to meet their membership goal. Some Councils have exceeded their goals (Congratulations), some Councils are getting close and will be successful (Keep up the good work) and then (from the report below) some Councils are struggling. This is not the time to become complacent; this is the time to work hard to achieve your goals. I believe that we can be successful as a team if every Council will recruit 2 more new members, that’s right every Council.

Retention is a key to success for membership. When you drop a member you then have to recruit a new member to make your goal so it is important to have good retention committee. I know that you can’t save everyone but find out there objections and try to resolve their issue. Council Officers should be leading by example and have recruited/our recruiting one new member. OWNERSHIP: When you recruit a new member it is important that you take ownership of him. Be a mentor; take him to the 2nd and 3rd Degree’s. Get him involved in activities. Everyone can’t do everything but we can do some. Involvement of members keeps the Council growing. Here are some ideas for the upcoming months that might help your recruiting:

Continuous: Officers Challenge - Recruit one new member. All Officers should be actively recruiting. You have the experience and should be leading by example.

May: You have 2 months left to accomplish your membership goal. Put your plans in action to

finish the year and earn STAR COUNCIL.

June: Thirty days to finish strong. It is time to close your year out with positive numbers. Continue to ask gentlemen about becoming a Brother Knight and inform that about our 4 Corner Stones; Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS DUB GREEN

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS STATE CHAIRMAN-SPECIAL OLYMPICS

In preparation for the 2012 Arkansas Special Olympics State Competition, I have traveled 1,024 miles, logged 78 hours, and spent $415.27 thus far. I attended one Knights of Columbus state meeting, one Knights of Columbus district meeting, two S.O.A.R. meetings, and made two trips to the Searcy storage unit to clean equipment and inventory our supplies. My spouse has logged 20 computer-hours to submit my newsletters reports, emailing potential volunteers, entering data needed for lodging volunteers in Searcy, telephone calls, etc., and other volunteers have logged 571hours painting wooden bead for necklaces and a directional sign for use at Olympic Town. Additional hours will be incurred by my wife for painting more beads (approximately 8,000 - 10,000 painted beads are used each year), making a banner to be used at the tents in Olympic Town, finalizing volunteers’ lodging assignments, making name badges for our volunteers, and computer-time to keep in touch with Terri Weir to ensure our accommodations for State Competition, and contacting Mr. Kelley who is in charge of assigning the amount of space we are allotted for erecting the tents for Olympic Town. We have increased the number of volunteers for the 2013 competition and will require additional monies for rooms and the volunteer dinner held Friday evening. SOAR has allotted 15 rooms in the past, but we will need 21 for this event. I suggest we allot $1,000 extra in addition to the amount that the State donates in order to reimburse SOAR for the additional rooms. The volunteer dinner may cost approximately $500 if we cannot get it donated, as we were able to do successfully last year. The Honor Guard is lined up for the event and consists of Sir Knights from Mountain Home and Hot Springs Village. Our expenses to date, compared to 2012, are much less because we did not have to re-work or re-paint any equipment (games, etc.). Additional expenses will be incurred for tattoos, nail polish, necklace wires, soda pop for the volunteers (to name a few items), which should be minimal. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR

Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need; a call we answer every day.


There are limitless opportunities to get involved with, local, national and international charities. Look for something that’s needed and workable in your community and get involved. Together as a group we can accomplish more, so get your Brother Knights and your councils involved to better your community. SUBSTANCE ABUSE POSTER CONTEST

I am pleased to announce that this years’ Substance Abuse Poster Contest has concluded and we have 4 awesome posters that were submitted to supreme for judging. The theme for this years’ Substance Abuse Poster Contest was "Drug Awareness" and "Alcohol Awareness". The participation of the contest was lower than we had hoped for however the thought and time put in by these youngsters were plentiful. Each winner will receive a $25.00 Walmart gift card and with a chance to receive up $300.00 on an international level. This years' winners are:

PRO-LIFE ANNUAL REPORT JIM & PATRICIA GOODSON, PRO-LIFE COUPLE

This year there have been two separate 40 Days for Life campaigns. We have no report on what was done by the Knights within their own parish communities; however we can report that during each campaign we adopted a Knight’s Day at the Little Rock Abortion Clinic, where we prayed to end abortion along with other sidewalk “Prayer Warriors”. On one day we had 13 Knights, some being accompanied by their supportive wives and the other day we had 11, also with some of the wives in support. We pray that those those numbers will improve, considering that we have 7000+ Knights here in Arkansas. We thank those Knights that were there in prayer. We will get this opportunity twice each year and look forward to more of our Knights stepping up in support of Life. Of course, some of you attend regularly on your own.


Baby Bottle Campaigns that were reported to us, were successfully conducted by Council 13829 in Siloam Springs (They have another planned this year.), Council 6419 In Hot Springs and Council 10208 in Hot Springs Village (They have another planned this year.). Two things remain very clear to us is the fact that so many Councils do not have a Pro-Life Director and very little Pro-Life activity, or even awareness. We continue to encourage that Supreme and/or State require that Councils do have a Pro-Life Director. We also encourage every Council to (1) conduct a Baby Bottle Campaign and support the State Council Ultrasound Fund, and (2) meet with the Pregnancy Center’s in your community and find out what you can do to help. Ultrasound machines are proven life-savers; as are the Pregnancy Centers; as are the Councils who get involved in support of Pro-Life. Consider inviting the Director of your local, or nearby Pregnancy Center to be a Guest Speaker at a Council meeting. God is Pro-Life! On our day of judgment what will our answer be when He asks what we did to stop the abortionists from killing His Babies? Vivat Jesu
