I never though I could save so many people in my life. I took a law degree because I wanted to become a lawyer. Instead, I accepted a position at the Portuguese embassy in Bordeaux, the same year France was invaded. Although I did many good deeds, I paid the price and end up dying in complete misery.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes

I am Aristides de Sousa Mendes, one of the biggest heroes of the portuguese history. My greatest achievement in life was to save thousands of people in world war two by giving them 'visa's' to leave France. However, 'karma' did not threat me as I threated others, after world war 2 ended, and portuguese dictator Salazar found out my actions and cut my salary. Maybe my life did not go as I had planned, after studying law I accepted the role of portuguese ambassador in Bordeaux. I had hoped for a calm and peaceful life, but war changed everything. Even though I might have died in misery, I feel grateful for my deeds and feel that no matter what happened to me, the feeling of having saved all those people always rises above all others.

Me and my wife. Isn’t she beautiful? She always support me in everything, she was always there for me. What can I say? She is the love of my life.
