ExecutiveSummaryThisdeliverabledescribesthetransnationalaccess (TNA)activitiescarriedout intheframeworkoftheARIADNEproject,from2014to2016aspartoftheactivitiesofWorkPackage6(WP6)byPIN,Prato (Italy). It describes the programme and objectives of the training activities, and theparticipants’profilesandfeedback.

The first activity was a week-long group visit, organized with the format of summer school on“MappingexistingdatasetstoCIDOCCRM”,takingplaceinPratobetween26and30May2014.ThegoalofthesummerschoolwastoenableresearchersandprofessionalstomaptheirdatasetstotheCIDOC CRM standard, an exercise required to integrate them in a wider framework such as theARIADNE one. The first activity was successful, although the number of participants was limited.Onlythreeresearcherswere,indeed,abletoattendtheworkshop,mostlyduetothenonavailabilityoftheotherapplicantstojoininonthefixeddates.Forthisreason,theteamatPINdecidedtoofferresearchersthepossibilitytovisitthecentreasindividualaccess,withmoreflexibilityonthedatesthatwereagreedinadvancewiththevisitingresearchers.

Duringthefollowingyears(2015-2016)PINhosted32researchersasindividualvisits,andconcludedthe TNA offerwith aworkshop on “Legacy datasets and their inclusion in the ARIADNE Registry”hosting 13 researchers from 12-16 December 2016. In total PIN awarded 47 researchers with ascholarship.ThehighnumberofTNAfellowhostedatPINismotivatedbytheinterestinthetopicofthe course offered and also is due to the availability of PIN to accept candidateswith a researchproject in scientific archaeological datasets. This corrective actionwas taken to take into accountWP9activities,whichhad initiallystalled; thedetailsof thecorrectiveactionsandtheoutcomeofthecoursearedescribedinthedeliverableD9.1Quantityofaccessoffered.

The transnational access to PIN’s facilities provided a summary background of the CIDOC CRMontology, showing some case studies and some frequently used templates (e.g. for chronology,authorship,locations,etc.).PIN’sTNAprogramattractedscholarsandarchaeologicalresearchersofall levels of experience, from postgraduate students, to experienced researchers, and technician,frominstitutionslocatedin13differentEuropeancountries.

Participantsproposedtheircasestudiesandresearchprojectsand learnedhowtotransformtheirdatasets in a CIDOC CRM compatible format for enhancing integration and for raising a wideinteroperabilityamongdifferentarchives.

The first edition of the ARIADNE Summer School “Mapping existing datasets to CIDOC-CRM”washeldfromMay24thtoMay30th2014inthepremisesofPINinPrato.

The goal of the schoolwas to enable researchers and professionals tomap their datasets to theCIDOC CRM standard, an exercise required to integrate them in a wider framework such as theARIADNEone.TheschoolhadtheaimtoprovideasummarybackgroundofCIDOCCRM(2-3days)demonstrating some case studies and some frequently used templates (e.g. for chronology, authorship, locations, etc.). The remaining days were dedicated to develop the mappings ofstudents’casestudies, whichtheycarriedoutunderthesupervisionofPIN’sspecialists.

4 ConclusionsPINprovidedtrans-nationalaccess (TNA) from2014to2016.Thisexperienceallowedustoreflectonwhatworkedwellandonwhatdidn’t.

In the firstyear,aweek-longsummerschoolswasorganisedaddressingthetopicsofCIDOC-CRM.Thisattractedovernineapplicationsfromwhichfivestudentswereselectedandthreedidactuallyattend.

Students were all expected to bring along their own projects to get support and advice and thisprovedtobeapopularfeatureoftheTrans-nationalaccess.Thedown-sideofsummerschoolswasthatthefixeddateswerenotconvenientforsomeapplicants.ThisconvincedPIN’steamtooffertheopportunity to researchers to visit the centre during the year, withmore flexibility on the dates, whichweredecidedtogetherwiththeapplicants.

DuringYear2(2015),theTNAwasthereforeexpandedtoincludeindividualtrainingplacements.

This time therewere tenapplications, all of themwereaccepted. Moreover, greater interestwasshowninscientificarchaeologicaldatasets, duetothepossibilitygivenbyPINtoacceptcandidateswithresearchprojectonthistopic.

AttendancewashigherthanexpectedsincePINreceivedtheparticipationof47researchersoutoftheexpected15.

However, therealsuccesswastheindividualplacementsfortraining.Theresearchprojectsthatthestudents have sought help from the experts at PIN have included mapping and conversion ofexcavation data recorded during excavation campaigns, CIDOC CRM description and encoding ofepigraphic and textual entities, integration of scientific analysis for dating and provenance ofartefacts, CRMbased database design to be used in the creation of new archaeological datasets,semanticenrichmentof3Dmodels.

The2016continuedwiththeindividualtrainingonCIDOC-CRM.Inaddition,ARIADNEhadpublishedtraining materials on the portal following two very successful workshops on data managementplanning for archaeologists held in January. The infrastructure did also establish a gooddisseminationnetworkover the last three years, especially through socialmedia, whichhelped inattractingyoungerarchaeologists to these trainingopportunities. However, attractingapplicationsprovedtobeachallengetostartwithaswehadtoreachtherightpeoplewho, inmostcases, hadnopriorknowledgeoftheinstitutionsofferingthetraining.Ratherthanlaunchonceandthenhaveto re-advertise to encouragemore applications, in Year 2 a phased call for applicationswas usedwhichworkedalotbetterandwasmoremanageable.

The feedback fromtheTNAhasalsobeenpositive–manyattendeeshavecommentedthatbeingabletogetexpertadvicefortheirownresearchprojectshasbeenverybeneficialforthem.

In conclusion, the TNA on “Mapping existing datasets to CIDOC-CRM”,which is part of theWorkPackage 6 “Legacy data and dataset design” fulfilled its objectives, by offering the attendees anoverall picture of how the Semantic Web languages can be applied to the integration of legacy

datasetsandtothedevelopmentofnewdatasetsinarchaeology.Inparticular, theattendeeshavebeen given a complete view of the current state of the languages for encoding (URIs, XML) andexpressing(RDF)archaeologicalknowledge,basedonontologyinthearchaeologicaldomain(CIDOCCRM,CRMArchaeo).Duringitsoffering,thecoursehasbeenmodifiedtoadjusttothebackgroundoftheattendees,sothatthesecondandthirdeditionsincludedasurveyoftheprinciplesofsemanticmodelling.

Feedbackwereoverallbetweengoodandverygood.
