ABOUT

The Festival of Tolerance - Jew-ish Film Festival Zagreb is an unique manifestation which, through its rich program that includes film screenings, thematic exhibitions, educations, discussions and music events, has a goal of spreading the truth and remem-brance of the Holocaust and adopting tolerance in our everyday life and times that we live in.

From its first edition in 2007, when it was formed as Jewish Film Festival, it has been a place that brings together a diverse audience, nourishes different affinities and beliefs, but also a place where thinking about other points of view and open dialogue are encouraged. The Festival was initiated with the idea of raising awareness and preserving the collective memory of the Holocaust,

and using it as an example of trans-ferring the experiences from the past; while listening to the needs of Croatian and global society, during 10 years, the festivals programs have also touched upon numerous other subjects, raising awareness of which can and should enable a better tomorrow for all. Attention was brought to the problems of racism, discrimination, xenophobia, homophobia, hate speech, position of immigrants and their assimilation.

The Festival of Tolerance today has become globally interesting and often the public, opinion makers, partners, politicians and visitors call it the Festival of universal tolerance, the goal of which is to educate the youth and the slightly older population, to show that we are all not the same but that we should also accept our differences, talk openly about them and in that way achieve a successful coexistence.

In support of that claim, there is a great deal of interest from other countries to host the Festival. Besides in Croatia, the Festival was held in 5 other countries in the region: Austria, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and has attracted almost 115.000 visitors and participants to its programs. Total running time of the Festival of Tolerance film program puts it among leading manifestations in Croatia, while film critic from Jutarnji list, Mr. Nenad Polimac, calls it “one of the most important domestic film manifestations”.

The 11th edition of Festival of Tolerance, held from April 3rd to May 15, 2017, and led by two-time acad-emy award winner Branko Lustig as Festival President and Nataša Popović as Festival Director, offered its audience (with only a few exceptions) Croatian film premieres and one world premiere. Film program opened on April 8th with a German feature film Naked Among Wolves, based on the Bruna Apitz’s novel of the same title, published in 1958. The film is directed by award-win-ning German director Philipp Kadelbach.

On April 3rd, as a part of the Festival, an exhibition of contemporary Austrian artist Arik Brauer named „From Genera-tion To Generation / The New Hag-gadah By Arik Brauer” was opened at

the Museum of Arts and Crafts, which presented a new and profound view of key events of Jewish history, such as the spring holiday Pesah, whose beginning marks the evening of Seder. That is the time when the Jews around the world gather to retell the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. The stories are read from the beautifully illustrated book Haggadah Sel Pesach, this time with new illustra-tions by the Austrian artist. The opening ceremony was attended by the Director of the Jewish Museum in Vienna, dr. Danielle Spera, as well as the Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Zagreb, Ms. Suzanne Ranetzky, in co-operation with whom the exhibition was orga-nized. The exhibition remained open until April 16th, 2017.

The main accent of the 11th Festival of Tolerance was put on current social events that are increasingly revealing var-ious social-cultural antagonisms which put and added emphasis on the need to speak out against injustice and to insist on a dialogue about all relevant and cur-rent questions as well as cooperation of the whole community in a fight against discrimination. By opening up a space of public dialogue which is in practice focused on socially engaged topics, and by involving experts from different disci-plines, such as sociologists, philosophers, politicians and film critics, on discussions related to topics covered in films, with a goal of developing democratic values

of society and individuals as well as de-veloping a culture of dialogue in public space, the Festival attracts an audience that is much wider then strictly film oriented audience.

As a part of this year’s Festival, a total of 72 feature, documentary and short films of world production were screened, with total running time of more than 4.800 minutes. The films were meticulously selected by one of the most respected film authorities in the world Branko Lustig, who is also a Holocaust survivor. The films that comprised the program convey a powerful and clear message, but also bear numerous world-renowned awards - for instance, films that were screened at the Festival previously won awards at Berlinale, Tribeca, Cannes and Sundance film festivals, while no less that five films nominated for this year’s Academy Awards were also presented.

After the screenings, the audience had a privilege („Q&A”, Questions and Answers) to meet with distinguished filmmakers, which is becoming a Festival tradition. From the fact that the audi-ence rated the films with high average grades, often higher then 4,5 (grade range is from 1 to 5), it is evident that the program contents aren’t subject to quantity, but they rather maintain a high standard and even continuously raise the bar every year.

For Educational Mornings, an innovative program of teaching the young generations about the Holocaust and accepting diversities through film,

survivor’s testimonies and experts’ lec-tures, that were first introduced in 2009, after 74 programs held in 6 different countries, we can certainly say that they have become a real brand, a program recognizable by itself and a segment of the Festival whose implementation has brought a visible progress in the society. Educational Mornings have become a vital part of the school year for numer-ous educational institutions, they are often included in the official curriculum of individual schools, recommended by the Ministry of Science and Education as a valuable source of information for pupils and an inspiration for professors for implementing similar programs into their classrooms.

A number of 21.500 young people that attended the programs so far is something about which only a few regional institutions that educate on the Holocaust can boast. Through Educa-tional Mornings, a wide network of edu-cational institutions, organizations, local authorities and media has been created, thanks to which the young people today can understand the danger that comes from exclusive way of thinking and disrespecting diversity. Within the 11th Festival of Tolerance, 2 Educational Mornings were held.

Along the described film program and Educational Mornings, the 11th Festival of Tolerance Zagreb offered its visitors 6 discussions (seventh, on the topic of the Holocaust denial, was canceled because it was not possible to find discussion participants i.e. due to the fact that the Croatian society is

All programs were free and open to public.

The Festival Grand Opening gathered an array of notable individuals from domestic political scene, from Mayor of the City of Zagreb Mr. Milan Bandić; State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture of the republic of Croatia Mr. Krešimir Partl;

Head of the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports Mr. Ivica Lovrić; Deputy Head of the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports Mr. Tedi Lušetić; Deputy Head of the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports Ms. Mila Jelavić; Advisor for Social Affairs and Youth of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Ms. Renata Margaretić Urlić; Heads of Missions, like H.E. Mr. Andreas Wiedenhoff, Ambassador of the Repub-lic of Austria to the Republic of Croatia; H.E. Mr. Thomas Eberhard Schultze, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Croatia; H.E. Mr. Adriano Chiodi Cianfarani, Embassy of the Italian Republic to the Republic of Croatia; and media, like Mr. Kazimir Bačić, Director General of Croatian Radiotelevision and so on.

The Festival’s visual identify is designed by world-renowned design-er Mirko Ilić. The visual identity won numerous awards all across the globe, which also contributed to the promo-tion of the Festival in Croatia but also much wider, from USA all the way to China.

The Grand Opening was hosted by Tamara Garbajs. Great interest for the Festival’s programs was noted among the diplomatic corps, Croatian associ-ations, and other inter-governmental organizations such as UNHCR - people from these organizations were not only

regular attendees but also active partic-ipants at programs, sharing their experi-ences and examples of best practice.

Traditional patron of the Festival of Tolerance Zagreb is the City of Zagreb, why many other years-long partners, from various embassies, cultural insti-tutes and ministries, to business entities and media sponsors, also provided their support. The Festival was also recog-nized as one of the most important projects under the „Cultural Year 2017 Croatia - Austria” program.

The exceptional value of this project are its numerous volunteers, 60 of them to be precise, aged from 14 to 84, who, with their professions, knowl-edge, energy and enthusiasm, greatly contributed to a successful preparation and realization of the Festival. Part of the volunteers helps with office work during the whole year, while the majority of them join 3 weeks before the begin-ning of the program and participate in implementation of all segments of the Festival. Its especially worth noting that for numerous past years Branko Lustig has been engaged as a volunteer on the project, in the roles of the main film pro-gram selector and lecturer, while many other notable individuals and companies from public life also volunteer at the Festival. The total number of volunteer hours recorded on the project exceeds 1.300.

Over the course of one week, on free screenings in Zagreb cinemas Europa and Tuškanac, 72 films were shown as part of the Festival, of which 21 were feature films (the highest number ever screened at any of the Festivals before), 29 were documentaries and 22 were short films. With their subject the films don’t only remind us of the Holocaust but of all social phenomenon that should encourage us to think about tolerance and respecting differences. The total number of visitors of the film program was 9827.

The Festival was, as is now tradition-al, opened in cinema Europa with the screening of the feature film “Naked among Wolves” by German director Philipp Kadelbach.

The film is an adaptation of Bruno Apitz’ 1958 novel of the same title. Apitz’ story became a symbol of the antifascist resistance movement in East Germany. The movie was nominated for two International Emmy Awards 2016. It won the German television award for best film and best actor Florian Stetter, and got Bavarian TV Awards 2015 for the best movie. The film follows a group of prisoners from the Buchenwald concentration camp who find a small boy hiding in a newly arrived prisoner’s suitcase.

It is the prisoners’ greatest trial, and they act according to their values, some reluctantly, some greatly concerned, all risking their lives to operate within the tiny confines they have for deci-sion-making. They do so in the hope

that their imprisonment in this hell-on-earth might be made to yield some sense, and in securing the bare survival of the child find hope for a future.

The audience in Croatia was among the first who saw the premier of numer-ous movies that received prestigious awards in the last year and were shown at the most significant festivals in the world. The Festival of Tolerance present-ed the prize winners of the Tribeca Film Festival, such as King Jack, the American movie about an adolescent Jack and the problems he is dealing with; and Berlin International Film Festival awarded movie Who’s Gonna Love Me Now?, an Israeli-British film about an HIV-pos-itive gay man from London, a singer in the London Gay Choir, who is seeking love and support from his family that is fighting with their own fears and prejudices; movie Unrest, shown at the Sundance Film Festival, a British-Ameri-can documentary who tells the story of Jennifer and her husband, Omar, newly-weds dealing with Jennifer’s syndrome of chronic fatigue. In search of answers and initially bedbound, Jennifer sets off

on a virtual voyage around the world, meeting four extraordinary patients in the US, UK, and Denmark; film Sami Blood, shown at the Venice Film Festival, a Swedish-Norwegian-Danish feature film on racism and racial bio-logical research of Sami in the 1930s; or the Cannes Film Festival awarded movie The student, a Russian feature film about manipulation and the relation-ship between religion and education; As well as the winner of the César award, the exceptional French-German feature film Frantz, mostly filmed in black and white, a love story set in the period after the World War I.

The Festival also features five films nominated for the Oscar Award 2017: The Land of the Mine (in the category for Best Foreign Language Film), I’m Not Your Negro (for Feature Documentary Film), Joe’s Violin (Short Documentary), Enemies Within (a short feature film) and Blind Vaysha (for a short animated film).

Only six films have not been pre-miered in Croatia, while the Festival

showed some of the world premieres, such as the Croatian documentary film Staying Human by Ljiljana Mandić, on the fates of Croatian Jews during the World War II. The movie premiere screening was organized on the last day of the Festival in cinema Tuškanac.

We continued implementing the communication of the Zagreb audience with directors and protagonists of films through a concept of questions and answers (Q&A). It is certainly worth mentioning that the Festival guest was Academy Award winner Mr. Thomas Lennon, who is the director and pro-ducer of the film „Sacred”.

After the screening of the film, with the participation of Mr. Lennon, a discussion on the topic What religion means to people? was organized. At a time when religious hatreds dominate the world’s headlines, this film explores faith as primary human experience, and how people turn to ritual and prayer to navigate the milestones and crises of private life. Shot by more than 40 film-making teams around the world, the film immerses the viewer in the daily use of faith and spiritual practice. Most known for his documentary films that are screened at the most important film festivals in the world like Sundance, Mr. Lennon also cooperated on the projects of American broadcasters PBS and

ABC, and won two duPont-Columbia Awards, two George Foster Peabody Awards and two Emmy awards. Along with Ruby Yang, he is one of the found-ers of the China AIDS Media project, whose revolutionary AIDS awareness raising messages have been seen more than 900 million people on Chinese television and on the Internet.

„Destination Unknown”, docu-mentary film which blends intimate testimony with immersive archive to bring the stories of twelve Holocaust survivors to the screen, was presented to the Festival audience by its director Claire Ferguson and producer Llion Roberts. Ms. Ferguson has a rich career, she worked as an editor with renowned directors, such as Stanley Kubrick, and at the Festival, she answered to numerous questions from the audience, primarily explaining the role of music in documentary films.

Film Festival, presented his film „Jaseno-vac Memento”.

„The Festival of Tolerance is extremely important, especially these days, when fascism is reappearing and its conse-quences are being denied. For all these 25 years, events like those in Jasenovac are trying to be covered-up as much as possible, and swept under the carpet. In school textbooks, this topic is not covered, children are not taught about it. And that is one of the reasons why I am talking about this topic again after 50 years, and why I want to teach the youth about the crimes in Jasenovac. This film is full of facts about these crimes”, he pointed out.

The program of Retrospective of Eu-ropean authors, introduced in 2015 with hosting Mr. István Szabo, continued this year with the screening of selected films of renowned Austrian actor and direc-tor Karl Markovics, winner of the Heart of Sarajevo, who has, among other films, starred in Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson and The Counterfeiters

by Stefan Ruzowitzky, which won the Academy Award in 2007 for the Best Foreign Language Film. As a part of the retrospective, the Festival presented the films „Breathing” („Atmen”) and „Su-perwelt”, which Mr. Markovics directed, as well as „Fog in August”, in which he starred. After all three screenings, Q&A sessions were held, and they attracted great interest from the audience.

We can proudly say that the vast majority of the audience stayed for the Q&A segments with the filmmakers after the screenings, and that they had many questions for them. With interest-ing films and guests, we believe that we as the organizer contributed to devel-oping new habits of the film audience in Zagreb, as only just a few years ago the audience had not been eager to stay for discussions after the screenings.

Like every year, the audience had a chance to use ballots to rate every watched film. The highest average grade in the category of feature film went to aforementioned „Fog in August” (with grade of 4,89); „Land of Mine”, Danish candidate for the Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Language Film, which has already won 26 awards worldwide, and which is based on a true story of German prisoners of war who were forced to clear the Danish coastline from the land mines at the end of the Second World War (4,82); and „Holding the Man”, of Australian production, an extraordinary true love story about two Australian young men and their love that has prevailed all the challenges over 15 years.

As the best achievement in the category of documentary film, with the perfect grade of 5,0 the audience has singled out an exceptional American film „I Am Not Your Negro”, which has already received 17 awards at various prestigious festivals around the world, which is based on never finished book by James Baldwin, and which thema-tizes the fight for African-American civil rights. Second best rated film, with an average grade of 4,94, was aforementioned „Unrest”, which is followed by „Shadow World” (4,88), American-Belgian-Danish film made after the world-renowned book of the same name by Andrew Feinstein, which

reveals how the international trade in weapons - with the complicity of governments and intelligence agencies, investigative and prosecutorial bodies, weapons manufacturers, dealers and agents - fosters corruption, determines economic and foreign policies and undermines democracy. In the category of short film, best average grade were given to „Spring Chicken” (4,91) and „Enemies Within” (4,83).

As a special program, on April 13th from 4 PM to 11 PM in the small hall of the cinema Tuškanac, a continuous screening in loop of the video performance „Salute” by authors Vesna Mačković and Ana Opalić was organized. With this video performance, Vesna Mačković “imaginatively returns to Sisak”, city of her youth, and “tries to face the city and personal past after years of absence”. Ms. Mačković person-ally attended the program.

Educational Mornings, as a program of educating the youth about the Holocaust, were introduced for the first time in 2009 as part of the 3rd Zagreb Jewish Film Festival, and have up to this date attracted more than 21.500 pupils and students. The program has so far been realized 74 times, in 15 different Croatian cities, as well as in Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Austria. Considering that the modern society is characterized by dan-ger of possible emergence and strength-ening of radical beliefs and movements, which the younger population often unthinkingly follows, it is crucial to de-velop awareness among the youth and to continuously educate them on such subjects. Developing attitudes based on knowledge and empathy as values that must never be forgotten is the first premise of the Educational Mornings program.

Educating the young on the Holo-caust has become one of the main tasks of the Festival of Tolerance. Informing

the youth about the ideologies of exclusive way of thinking that have led to terrible consequences for the whole world, today, seventy years afterwards, becomes even more important in order to keep the Holocaust from becoming a mere fiction for the youth and future generations. Through discussions and exchanging opinions, the pupils can grasp the meaning of tolerance and understand how the lack of it as well as indifference to the sufferings of others lead to immeasurable consequences that the society can never again allow to happen.

As a part of the Festival, two Educa-tional Mornings were organized.

For the ninth year in a row at the Festival, Branko Lustig presented the pupils his testimony from the period of the Holocaust. Program named „Sur-vivor’s testimony” took place on April 10th at cinema Europa.

The program started with a screening Holocaust survivor testimony, Branko Lustig

of „Fanny’s Journey”, multiple award-win-ning film intended for young audience, based on a true story of eleven minors of Jewish origin who in 1943 flee from the occupied France towards Switzer-land.

After the film, and drawing paral-lels with it, Branko Lustig, two-time Academy Award winner, who as a boy was held captive for two years in the infamous concentration camps, gave his own testimony from the period of the Holocaust.

During his one hour testimony, he told the pupils about his journey, de-scribed events from Auschwitz and Ber-gen-Belsen that he personally witnessed, pointed out the existence of numerous camps on the territory of Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during 1940-ies, and urged the new generations to live in tolerance and acceptance of diversities.

„When we listened to Branko Lustig’s testimony, some things he told us were so horrible and inhuman that they seemed unreal. I realized how much I had not known about the Holocaust and I think that it should not be forgot-ten and that everyone needs to hear the whole truth”, Marija Kos, eighth grade pupil from Juraj Habdelić Primary School from Velika Gorica told after the program.

The program was intended for the age group of 13 to 15 years, and the

screening and testimony were attended by 600 pupils and teachers from 11 pri-mary schools and 8 high schools from Zagreb, Vukovar, Petrinja and Velika Gorica, as well as by protégés from the Center for Training and Education “Slava Raškaj” and young attendants of „Pčelice” kindergarten.

Because of the exceptional interest and limited capacity of the cinema hall, the applications were closed as early as eleven days after invitations were sent to schools, so 4 schools that wanted to attend the program were unfortunately unable to get seats.

Second educational morning

Desired Bodies: the Ideal of Aryan Masculinity, Dr. Daniel Wildmann

The second Educational Morning, intended for pupils of second, third and fourth grades of high schools, as well as university students, was held on April 12th at cinema Tuškanac. The lecturer was dr. Daniel Wildmann, esteemed German historian and film expert. He is the Director of the Leo Baeck Institute London and Senior Lecturer in History at Queen Mary, University of London. His research areas are Modern German-Jewish History, The history of the Third Reich, The history of Mas-culinities, and Film, Antisemitism and Emotion.

In this lecture, dr. Wildmann focussed on the visual language of „Olympia”, documentary film about the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 pro-duced and directed by Leni Riefenstahl, one of the most famous film direc-tors of Nazi Germany, known for her propaganda films made for the regime. Dr. Wildmann analyzed the modus of representation of Aryan masculinity and showed what kind of role anti-Sem-itism and the interpretation of Greek mythology had in it.

At the end of the lecture, which included the screening of the prologue of the aforementioned film „Olympia”, pupils and students had numerous questions for the lecturer. They were interested in other Leni Riefenstahl’s films, political and historical context of the Olympic Games in Berlin, as well as a lecturer’s opinion about the propaganda

in today’s society that is being directed against certain social groups.

Educational Morning with dr. Wild-mann was the most attended program of the Festival of Tolerance in cinema Tuškanac up-to-date - 300 young people participated in the program, and they came from 6 high schools from Zagreb and Zaprešić, as well as two faculties, including, already traditionally, 50 Police Academy cadets.

The Educational Mornings program has, as usual, received the recommenda-tion of Ministry of Science and Educa-tion of the Republic of Croatia as well as of the Education and Teacher Training Agency.

The programs were co-financed by the City of Zagreb and Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia.

New Life, New Future

Round table “New Life, New Future” was held on April 12th at cinema Tuškanac, following the film “After the Spring” which features a story about the Syrian refugee crisis. Film follows the transition of two refugee families and assistant workers who maintain the camps, it brings a view of life in Zaatar, the largest Syrian refugee camp located in Jordan. The roundtable has raised questions about whether it is possible to start life in a new country, is a future in an unknown community possible, how to tackle new challenges in a place that never was suposed to be a perma-nent residency? Among other things, interlocutors looked at the consequenc-es of the refugee crisis in Europe and the world as well as on the current situation in Croatia.

Croatia has two reception centers for asylum-seekers; the Government intends to improve accommodation capacity to ensure that adequate accommodation space is available. Refugees and migrants arriving through irregular border crossings are at risk of being rejected at the border and exploited by smugglers and traffick-ers. National child protection systems do not have sufficient capacity to address the needs of unaccompanied and separated children and there are delays in the appointment of special guardians and a lack of interpreters for less common languages. Children are placed in residential care institutions that do not adequately respond to their needs. In addition, social welfare officers

often are not familiar with the children’s specific cultural backgrounds, impeding the delivery of services and assistance. Legal and psycho-social counseling for refugees and migrants needs to be pri-oritized, taking into account the specific challenges (trauma and exhaustion, depression caused by the prolonged stay at reception centers) faced by persons of concern. Integration of refugees and migrants will also present a challenge, in particular in terms of acquiring neces-sary language skills, and effective access to education and employment.

Participants of the round table were: Mirjana Vergać from UNHCR, Milena Zajović from the Are You Syrious? initiative, Hrvoje Maleković, Clinical Psychologist and International Consul-tant, Dr. Stjepan Šterc, Demo grapher at PMF and Ilija Jandrić, N1 Television anchorman.

Round table ‘Editorial boards under fire’ was held on April 10th at the Cultural Information Center (KIC). The topic was journalists exposure to pressures, threats and violence, and the incitement aimed at the media and journalists in the public sector and oth-er media. to subordinate their work to the creation and transmission of ‘correct’ information and stories.

As part of this great topic, the issue of pressures on journalists and independent journalism as such was imposed, as well as can we can talk about the existence of research journalism today.

Participants in this conversation were representatives of organizations that discuss the role and the position of me-dia and democratic political culture in their work, such as well-known research journalist Hrvoje Appelt, journalist and editor of the independent portal H-alter Ana Kuzmanović, Saša Lekov-ić, president of Croatian Journalism Society, Dražen Hoffman from GONG and director of The Human Rights Film

Festival Barcelona Toni Navarro; the round table was moderated by Robert Tomić Zuber.

Robert Zuber, a former journalist as well, pointed out that from the start of recession to date more than 600 of his colleagues in Croatia lost their jobs. The conclusion is that there are almost no journalists in investigative journalism, and that the young generation does not know the rules of the profession and are subject to pressure from adver-tisers. Journalism is now reduced to re-posting, translation of international media reports and counting clicks, while independent media, , small in numbers, generally barely survives.

It is a great responsibility of the pro-fession to educate the public about the

meaning of verified information.

Youth and (in)tolerance - bullying

and discrimination in schools and

how to overcome them

A round table titled “Youth and (In)Tolerance - Bullying and Discrimination in Schools and How to Overcome them” was held on April 12 at 19:00 in KIC. The conversation was conducted by moderator Martina Horvat of the GONG organization and interlocutors Domagoj Morić from the Forum for Freedom of Education, Marko Kovačić from the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, Luka Rinčić, head of the educational program at the Associa-tion of Jewish Film Festival Zagreb and

Toni Navarro, Director of Human Rights Film Festival Barcelona-New York-Paris

Round Table “A New Life, a New Future” was organized in cooperation with UNHCR. Participants were Dr. Stjepan Šterc, demographer at PMF; Hrvoje Maleković,

Clinical Psychologist and International Consultant; Mirjana Vergaš of UNHCR Croatia; Milena Zajović from the Are You Syrious? Initiative;

Ivan Novosel from Youth Initiative for Human Rights.

The topic of this Round Table was the spread of discrimination and discrimina-tory motivated violence among young people, how this problem is addressed in Croatia and how it is carried by society. In Croatia, this problem is most evident in schools that could, and some do, through civic education and other forms of activity with young people, transmit and teach the values of tolerance and appreciation of diversity.

This roundtable partly covered the theme of the last year’s round table entitled “Youth - Our Strength: How Children and Young People Develop Intercultural Dialogue” and addressed

issues of worrying statistics on intoler-ance among young people, especially among members of other nationalities or religions; the role of the institutional school system in education, but also the upbringing of young people; the necessity of reforming the school system and the position and importance of civic education; roles of society and the me-dia in encouraging tolerance and mutual respect among young people.

Also, all the participants presented programs, activities and forms of work with schools and youth that their orga-nizations carry out.

The roundtable began with the pre-sentation of a oneminute promotional video “All for Hate for Croatia” under the

direction of Andreja Korovljeva made in 2014 as part of the initiative “All of Us for Croatia of All of Us”, which brings to-gether a large number of civic initiatives and organizations from all parts of Cro-atia that persistingly work on respecting the rights of every human being and every social group with emphasis on the promotion of the rights of national minorities in the Republic of Croatia.

A round table was visited by a total of 34 visitors, who have been discussing about half an hour with participants about the state of society today, edu-cational institutions and organizations that are implementing non-institutional upbringing and education.

changing opinions, questions and answers, agreeing and disagreeing, the discussions include the audience, as an important fac-tor that, alongside experts from relevant social areas, co-creates public opinion, through encouraging polite communica-tion, all for the purpose of creating a more open and tolerant society.

The eleventh edition of the Festival brought seven film-related discussions. The movies to which the discussions were linked are ‘The Age of Consequences’, ‘Sacred’, ‘The Destruction Of Memory’, ‘Under Fire: The Untold Story of Tony Vaccaro’, ‘Denial’, ‘Holding The Man’ and ‘Shadow World’.

Discussion series of the 11th edition of the Festival of Tolerance begun with the topic of international trade in weapons. Military analyst Igor Tabak, journalist, writer and activist Ratko Martinović and court expert on ballistics, firearms and cold weapons Dubravko Gvozdanović, participated in a discussion titled “Military Industry - the largest war profiteer”. The

discussion was held after the movie “Shadow World” on April 10th in cinema Tuškanac and was moderated by Jasmina Popović (HRT).

On Tuesday, April 11th, also at cinema Tuškanac, a discussion called “War report-ing or how easy it is to manipulate public perception” was held that talked about the importance of documentary films and photography, their influence on the public opinion, as well as who are the people who risk their lives in order to convey the truth that is so easily manipulated. One of the main questions was how much would we know today about the World War II if there were no images. The discussion was made possible thanks to the participation of Srđan Vrančić, photographer from Cropix, Zoltan Kabok, war reporter at HRT (Croatian national television), Nedžad Haznadar, media expert, and host Jasmina Popović (HRT).

On the fifth day of the festival (12th of April), in the movie theater Europa, a discussion named “What religion means

of the exhibition on destroyed NOB monuments, a member of the Associ-ation of Social Fringe: interesting untold stories; Eugen Jakovčić, media coordinator of Documenta - Centar for dealing with the past, and Saša Borić Poljanec from the Ivo Pilar Institute.

The denial of the Holocaust was the subject of the last discussion scheduled at the 11th Festival of Tolerance, and was following the film by Mick Jackson “De-nial”. The film is based on the acclaimed book “Denial: Holocaust History on Trial” and recounts the legal battle of Deborah E. Lipstadt (played in the movie by Oscar winning actress Rachel Weisz) for the his-toric truth against David Irving (played by Timothy Spall), who accused her of slan-der when she declared him a Holocaust denier. In the English legal system, in the case of defamation, the burden of proof is on the defendant, so proving the essential truth and Holocaust events depended on Lipstadt and her legal team led by Richard Rampton (played by Tom Wilkinson).

The goal of the discussion “Holocaust Denial: Everyone Has Their Own Truth?” was to present and engage in dialogue different opinions that are present in the public. Several historians, representatives of the Croatian Government and edu-cators were invited to participate in the discussion, but due to the lack of panelists, the discussion was canceled. We were faced with the lack of panelists, due to the fact that, in our opinion, Croatian society is still not open enough to discuss this topic freely.

to man?” was opened and hosted the famous director Thomas Lennon whose film “Sacred” was presented the same evening.

This film is specific because over 40 film teams collaborated together to bring stories of everyday religious and spiritual practice on screen. Other participants in the discussion were Luciano Moše Prelević - Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Community in Zagreb and Chief Rabbi of Croatia, Miter Georgijev - House of Human Rights Za-greb, priest MA Sc. Borna Puškarić -Head of the Zagreb office of the Archdiocese of Zagreb.

The discussion “Ecology / Migration / Chaos and Conflict” (13th of April, cinema Tuškanac), followed the presentation of the documentary film “The Age of Con-sequences”, which opened the debate on climate change and its consequences. The participants were prof. Dr. Mirko Bilandđić, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, and Dr. Drago Župarić Iljić from the Institute for Migra-

tion and Ethnic Studies. The discussion was hosted by Jasmina Popović.

After the screening of the Australian movie “Holding the Man”, focusing on teenage gay love, a discussion called “All Colors of Love” was held on 13th of April in the movie theater Europa. Participants in the discussion were Bruno Šimleša, author of “Loveology” and “School of Life”, books in the field of popular psychology and spirituality, Barbara Matejčić, journalist and author of the book “How are you?” and Romana Taylor, a transgender woman and activist. They concluded that attitudes could only change with education.

Two discussions were planned for the last day of the festival, 14th of April. At the movie theater Tuškanac, a discussion entitled “Cultural Heritage as a Nation’s Identity “ was held.

Participants were: Prof. Dr. Tvrtko Jakov-ina, Professor of the World History of the 20th Century at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb; Lana Lovrenčić, one of the authors

Art program of the Festival of Toler-ance over the years became an increas-ingly important part of the Festival. Presentation of domestic and foreign artists is an indispensable segment in realizing dialogues with local, regional and international media. At the Festival artists from all over the world who pro-mote the idea of tolerance through their work and talk about the uniqueness of human existence and humanism, while at the same time problematize certain positions in society, through which we strive to show those differences that unite us.

“From Generation to Generation:

New Haggadah by Arik Brauer”

Museum of Arts and Crafts, April 3 - 16, 2017.

The versatile Viennese artist of Jewish origin Arik Brauer presented himself to the Zagreb audience with a series of paintings that came about as

an illustration of the Haggadah, a Jewish book of stories read at the time of Sedar Pesha. The exhibition was opened on April 3, 2017. at the Museum of Arts and Crafts, where 25 paintings were exhibited.

Art of Arik Brauer brought Jewish tradition and culture closer to the visi-tors. Visitors had the opportunity to get acquainted with Jewish history through New Haggadah, which illustrates biblical events and provides a rich insight into one of the most important holidays in Jewish tradition - Pesah. Transferring tradition and memories from one generation to another is an important Jewish principle.

Arik Brauer is the founder and representative of the Vienna School of Magical Realism. A great retrospective exhibition by Arik Brauer was held in 2014/15 at the Leopold MuseumIn Vienna, on his 85th birthday. The exhibi-tion included his works from the period

Festival of Tolerance and Italian Cultural Institute started with the wish of the or-ganizers to expand the cultural content of the Festival and the City of Zagreb, as well as to create changes within the community regarding openness to foreigners and other cultures, all in the spirit of development of civic society.

Gianluca Capri has exhibited in Zagreb over 40 photographs illustrat-ing his trip to 4 continents and across 11 countries. Through the series „Uni Diversity”, the artist challenges the pro-cess of globalization, and challenges the equalization of cultural differences.

Through the „Uni Diversity” series,

the artist challenges the process of globalization and the equalization of cultural diversity. The artist states that in the last two centuries the world has opened to all of us thanks to technolo-gy - distances seem to have diminished, newspapers, photographs, and ulti-mately Internet and television remind us that every place in the world has already been discovered and is known, so it seems to us that we can look at the world as if it were an unlimited landscape we are watching from the windows, glittering in thousands of colors we admire, but whose contrasts we do not perceive: economic, social, cultural, geographic and anthropological differences are still hidden to us.

The photography project was created in Italy, Egypt, Morocco, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Peru, Indonesia, Bolivia, Cuba and Namibia.

After the opening ceremony of the exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute, a talk about tolerance and globalization was organized and mod-erated by Stefania Del Bravo, director of the Italian Cultural Institute with participation of Gianluca Capri and Na-taša Popović, director of the Festival of Tolerance. They talked about the trends of globalization, migration and the ne-cessity of understanding the differences and all those who are different from us.

Introducing special lectures by top experts and presenting European cinematography at last year’s Festival, through the presentation of Svetlana Agrest - Korotkova, Zagreb audience had an opportunity to learn about the „New wave” of the Ukranian cinema-tography. Guided by the idea that ed-ucation is the only answer for a better future and the development of a more tolerant society, we have decided to continue with this special programme so this year we are presenting another European country - Lithuania.

Linas Vildžiunas:

“The dimension of time

in Lithuanian cinema”

12. 04. 2017., Cultural Information Center - KIC

A film critic, president of the Lithu-anian Chamber of Film Critics and chief editor of the renowned newspaper ‘7 meno dienos’ and the magazine ‘Kinas’,

Linas Vildžiūnas, gave a lecture about the Lithuanian film industry, especially focusing on the period of political and social changes from the 1960s to 1990s. It was extremely interesting to hear the insight of this well-known film critic about the influence of social changes in Lithuania on the film language and themes of Lithuanian documentary films.

Four documentaries were shown as part of the lecture - „Time Passes Through the City” by Almantas Grikev-ičiusa, „A Trip Across Misty Meadows” by Henrikasa Šablevičiusa,, „Illusions” by Kornelijus Matuzevičius, Diana Matuzevičius, and „10 Minutes before the Flight of Icarus” by Aršnas Matelis. The screening of the films was followed by a brief discussion involving specta-tors that addressed their questions to Mr Vildžiūnas, to which he voluntarily responded, providing a deeper insight into Lithuanian cinematography and society.

The Festival Market was introduced in 2014 to represent domestic and for-eign film festivals on an innovative, new way. The concept of the Festival Market, free and accessible to all, is an excellent training ground for the exchange of experiences of film professionals and people from the industry, exchange of ideas, which in one place and from the ‘first hand’ can get information on relevant topics.

We have had the opportunity to get to know work and festival staff from numerous European festivals like IDFA (International Documentary Film Festi-val Amsterdam), DOC POINT - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival, Pula Film Festival, the Sarajevo Film Festival, Rolling Film Festival, Jameson CineFest - Miskolc International Film Festival , MIX Copenhagen LGBT Film Festival, Kino Otok - Isola Cinema International Film Festival, Cinedays Festival of European Film and Riga International Film Festival 2ANNAS.

Third edition of the Festival Market, held this year, hosted the Human Rights Film Festival Barcelona-New York-Paris, its director Toni Navarro, and producer José José Prieto, who presented their work to the industry professionals as well as to the general public.

HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL

Barcelona - New York - Paris

10. 04. 2017., Cultural Information Center - KIC

The primary objective of the Human Rights Film Festival Barcelona-New York-Paris is to promote empathy and active participation in society by showing films dealing with reverse human reality. Festival of Barcelona with its program influences the values, behaviour and view of human life. This event is a central meeting place for filmmakers, activists and citizens which encourages dialogue, social, ecological, democratic and pacifist engagement.

Human Rights Film Festival Barcelo-na presented their work at the Festival of Tolerance with an extensive Power Point presentation; the film program was presented with a projection of the German documentary film ‘#myescape’, which brings the original refugees video recordings that they took themselves via theirs cell phones and interviews in which their journey from Afghanistan, Syria, Eritrea to Europe is shown.

Toni Navarro and José Prieto gave insight into the human rights situation in Spain as well as the world. At the same time, they have devised concrete ex-amples of how a film festival can be the initiator of social change and contribute to the promotion of human rights and fundamental values of humanity.

The presentation was organized in cooperation with the Spanish Embassy in Croatia.

Books by the Italian writter and translator Primo Levi, a Holocaust sur-vivor, novel „If This is a Man” and book of essays „The Drowned and the Saved” were presented on April 11th at Müller hall of cinema Europe, as a part of 11th Festival of Tolerance.

Books were published by publishing house „Fraktura” and translation was done by Tvrtko Klarić. The novel „If This is a Man” is once again available to Croatian readers after 25 years since it’s frst Croatian edition, while the book of essays „The Drowned and the Saved” was published for the first time. Transla-tor Tvrtko Klarić said that the publisher’s main editor Seid Serdarević, by publish-ing these books, shown «courage as well as madness in these times when books don’t sell and the fascism of the society is on the rise».

Book promotion

Serdarević, who moderated the pre-sentation, recalled that it was happening on a sad anniversary - exactly 30 years after the suicide of Prima Levi.

Branko Lustig, a Holocaust survivor and President of Festival of Tolerance, is convinced that Primo Levi has given his writing to all those who could no longer write because they did not survive the Holocaust. He argued that it was unthink-able that such a thind as the Holocaust could happen and recommended to all, especially to young people, to read Levy’s books because they were “a confirma-tion that the Germans broke us but did not break our sense of art.” And while personally, as he said, “supressed numer-ous images of memories of the terror of the Holocaust,” Lustig «would be glad if young people would read the books and watch Holocaust films, to realize their importance as a mean of creating a better life in the future with not allowing fascism and neofasicm to happen again».

Publicist Vuk Peričić said that the Ho-locaust was the ultimate consequence of anti-Semitism that existed long before the Holocaust, and that the “gas cham-bers were at the end of this trackside of hatred”. Text was read by actor Frano Mačković.

Italian writer and translator, a chemist by profession, Primo Levi was born in Turin on July 31, 1919 and died in his native city on April 11, 1987. As a Jew and a member of the Italian anti-fascist movement in 1944, he was deported to Auschwitz. That experience was marked by his opus and, as he said, forced him to become a writer.

Free screenings, lectures, round tables, exhibitions and various educa-tional programs are only a part of the 11th edition of the Festival of Tolerance. Every year the festival tries to present the best possible music program with the intention to attract a large number of young audience and to introduce to the public the additional music expression such as klezmer music, which came into being as a fusion of different cultures and the traditional Jewish music, that with jazz rhythm creates a good mood and invites to dance.

Aside from hosting klezmer bands for years now, we can also boast to be a film festival with the electronic music pro-gram of the highest order. 11th Festival edition brought three concerts and one club program.

This year, ones that made us dance with their music, were: DJ Kuna, young Zagreb DJ on the rise, mand bands Va-lami Swing, KIDS N CATS and Edi Nulz.

The program was, just like in the previ-ous years, prepared in cooperation with our long-time partners Austrian Cultural Forum and Balassi Institute in Zagreb.

First music program was organized on the very opening of the Festival, on Saturday April 8th, in newly opened club Pločnik where, with his eclectic mix of funk, disco, breakbeat, cumbie and afrobeat, DJ Kuna made us dance, additionally seasoning the dancing with an abundance of positive energy that he brilliantly transfers to his audience, com-pletely erasing the boundaries between subcultural styles, bringing together a diverse bunch of people.

Mario Kunštek, better known as DJ Kuna, is a new reinforcement on the urban clubbing scene. His opus includes a variety of styles upgraded by personal interpretation through humorous rap improvisations. DJ Kuna has been active on the scene for more than five years, so far most frequently appearing at clubs

such as Brvnara, Swanky, Depot and Funk, which are now an integral part of the monthly clubbing programme.

Since the beginning he has been active on the alternative cultural scene and participated in numerous artistic projects such as Art Park, Yeti Snow-boarding Club, Graffiti na Gradele and SC Culture of Change.

To our mutual satisfaction, we continued our cooperation in concert organization with Swanky Monkey Gar-den and, third year in a row, organized a concert there in cooperation with Ballas-si Institute Zagreb. This year Swanky hosted the concert of Valami Swing band whose members were brought together by love for gypsy jazz, a style

that was started by guitarist Django Reinhardt in the 1930’s in Paris. This is the earliest European form of jazz that in a virtuoso manner combines swing, hot jazz and classic jazz tunes together with traditional gypsy music, chanson and Balkan melodies. With music rooted in free improvisation, Valami Swing plays their own virtuosic gypsy jazz composi-tions in an individual style, evoking a café atmosphere, nights of swing dancing and the golden age of jazz.

Pločnik hosted one more musical segment of the 11th Festival of Toler-ance where, on Thursday April 13th, KIDS N CATS for the first time pre-sented their music to Croatian public. This electropop quartet from Vienna brought to the stage wild, colourful,

chaotic music open to many different musical styles, fusing them into one big harmonious whole.

Vinyl hosted the closing concert of the Festival of one more Austrian band - Edi Nulz (organized in cooperation with Austrian Cultural Forum) that plays jazz counteracted by rock elements. Their performances are pure anarchy - at their concert we watched and listened to a bassless jazz trio or a rock band without a singer, depending on how we experience it. It was a unique experience where the bass clarinet becomes a solo instrument, a vocalist and a bass instru-ment all at once. Their concert turned into a music performance between a grand audio drama and an auditory expression of happiness.

This three day art event, from 26th until 28th of May, introduced Zagreb with world- renowned street artists as a part of the 11th edition of Festival of Toler-ance.

Meeting of Styles project gathered more than 40 well known street artists who painted walls and billboards at Zagreb’s popular street art location Art Park.

Artists involved were carefully chosen, not only because of their impressive art skills, but also because of their social engagement and messages of peace, happiness and mutual respect they are conveying to the community through their artwork.

In addition to painting, second day of the event brought at 19:30, a discussion on the topic off “Culture of Graffiti”. Insight into graffiti, street art and their cultural and social impact were given by Slaven Lunar Kosanović, known Croatian graffiti artist, Rienke Enghardt, a graffiti artist and founder of the Dutch project Hope Box, Manuel Gerullis, founder and organizer of the world project Meeting of the Styles, British street artist Edward

Tizer Shearon and GrisOne who came to Meeting of Styles from Columbia.

They concluded that graffiti and street art have a great impact on society, mainly because of the fact that street art is often commenting on or pointing to social issues as well as due to its extraor-dinary availability - “when museums are closed, one exhibition always remains open, one that takes place in the streets of a city - that is street art.”

The discussion was followed by a screen-ing of the French documentary “Paris Tower 13” directed by Thomas Lallier, that shows us, in and out, one of the largest gatherings of street artists that have, in 2103., painted in Paris a whole skyscraper designated for demolition and created more than 400 works of art. The skyscraper was a gallery for a month making created art works available to the public before the final demolition.

During the weekend, the entire Art Park area was a place for socializing, fun and learning that united multiculturalism, art and tolerance in the best possible way and brought together 1 568 visitors.

Discussion „Culture of Graffiti“: Tizer, Manuel Gerullis (Meeting of Styles), Lunar, GrisOne, Rienke Enghardt (Hope Box)
