Sick staff shouldn’t be pushed back in

work before they’re ready, doctors warnGPS HAVE warned that the government’s Fitfor Work service could force people back towork before they are ready.

The voluntary scheme, launched at the endof last year, enables GPs and employers torefer people who have been absent from workfor four weeks to be assessed by occupationalhealth professionals and assisted in re-turning to work.

Yet GPs have stated that they will notsupport a scheme that is “punitive” andpressurises patients to go back to work orcome off benefits.

Dr Maureen Baker, chairwoman of theRoyal College of GPs, said: “It is not our job – and it must not become the job of GPs – to police who is and who is not enti-tled to welfare support.

“The best thing for patients, and for soci-ety at large, is to have a healthy, produc-tive workforce. Any changes to the systemmust support patients to return to workas soon as they are ready, not pressurisethem into doing so before they are wellenough.”

The British Medical Association said itwould boycott the scheme if doctors believedit was forcing people back to work.

“If GPs feel that this is a helpful and sup-portive service with occupational adviserswho are very much on the side of the patientand doing their best, then GPs will support

it,” Dr Richard Vautrey, deputy chairman of the BMA’s GP committee said.

“If they feel it’s somehow a punitive or lip-service arrangement without any meaningfulsupport, or is seen as an arm of the benefitssystem to effectively drive people off benefits,then GPs will very quickly disengage.”
