the full gure of womenwho are currently lookingfor employment in the UKOFFICIAL figures are understatingthe number of women looking forwork, a new study has claimed.

The TUC said that in the past threeyears, the headline unemploymentfigure fell by more than 800,000, to1,827,000, but the number of other

economically inactive people whowant work hardly moved, from2,371,000 to 2,298,000.

During the same period, thenumber of economically inactivewomen seeking work increased from1,363,000 to 1,379,000.

A study of official statistics showedthere are 1,379,000 economically inac-tive women seeking work, comparedto 920,000 men.

The TUC said the full “want work”count – a combination of the unem-ployment count and economicallyinactive people seeking work – is

4,103,000 people. Of this, 2,194,000 arewomen, and 1,910,000 are men – a dif-ference of 284,000.

TUC general secretary FrancesO’Grady said: “Six years on from therecession, the culture of low expecta-tions on jobs and pay is well past its

sell-by date.“Reducing the claimant count aloneis not good enough if there is still anadditional two million people whowant a job but don’t have one.

“The government should beespecially concerned about the lackof progress for women with caringresponsibilities who want to work.There are nearly 300,000 more womenlooking for work than men, and thegap is not closing.

“Given the number of women whowork in public services, there’s a bigdanger that cuts due to be announced

in November will mean major joblosses, along with a reduction infamily friendly job vacancies and afurther rise in the number of womenseeking work.”

Stephen Timms, acting shadowsecretary for work and pensions,

said: “This important analysis showsDavid Cameron and George Osborneare failing to help hundreds of thou-sands of women into jobs.

“The government is letting downwomen who want to work, but arebeing left behind as the economyrecovers.

“The government should be givingevery woman the opportunity to goout and work by ending delays to freechildcare, tackling discriminationand to make sure work pays, drop-ping their plan to cut tax credits forworking people.”
