Perfectionism

‘puts your healthat risk’ suggestsnew researchEMPLOYEES who strive for perfectionin the workplace are being driven toextreme stress and burnout, researchhas found.

The personality trait – featuringexcessively high personal standardscoupled with harsh self-criticism – isusually associated with virtue, highachievement and being conscientious.

Researchers from York St John Uni-versity and the University of Bath havefound it is “largely destructive” and canlead to poorer performance at work.

The work, published today in the jour-nal Personality & Social PsychologyReview, is the first to aggregate the fulleffects of perfectionism.

It found the trait is closely associatedwith burnout, a syndrome associatedwith chronic stress that manifests asextreme fatigue, perceived reducedaccomplishment and eventual detach-ment.

The link is particularly strong inemployment settings, which research-ers suggest could be due to a “prevail-ing performance-outcomes focus” in themodern workplace.

Perfectionist tendencies are exacer-bated when poor performance carriessignificant costs, leading to increasedstress for individuals and a lack of in-

novation for organisations.Dr Andrew Hill, associate profes-

sor and head of taught postgraduateprogra mmes at York St John University,was lead author of the review.

“Too often people confuse perfection-ism with more desirable features suchas being conscientious,” Dr Hill said.

“Rather than being more productive,perfectionists are likely to find theworkplace quite difficult and stressful.

“Our research suggests that if perfectionists are unable to cope withdemands and uncertainty in the work-place, they will experience a range of emotional difficulties.”

Dr Thomas Curran, lecturer in sportpsychology at the University of Bath,added: “As a society we tend to holdperfectionism as a sign of virtue orhigh-achievement.

“Yet our findings show that perfec-tionism is a largely destructive trait.We suggest its effects can be managedand organisations must be clear thatperfection is not a criteria of success.

“Instead, diligence, flexibility andperseverance are far better qualities.”

In recent years, companies includingGoogle have established initiatives tocounter perfectionism and drive upquality by rewarding staff for failure.
