Coastal Nature Reserve of Mas Larrieu

“A genuine, living nature”Your guide will accompany you in this wild site along the Roussillon coastline revealing a number of sceneries: dunes, meadows, wetlands, close proximity of the Tech river - a Mediterranean coastal river. Argelès-sur-Mer should be related, visited and debated…The name of Argelès is derived from the French word ‘argile’ (clay) because the town was built on a clayey soil. This ancient city dating back to the 9th century stretches for nearly 10km along the Mediterranean Sea: 7km of sandy coast from the Nature Reserve of Mas Larrieu to Le Racou, and 2km of rocky coast from Le Racou to the beach of L’Ouille. The starting point of most of the waymarked routes is located in Valmy car-park where you can find a notice board with a plan.

Beach InformationQuality of bathing waters From 15 June to 15 September, ARS (French regional health authority) regu-larly inspects the quality of bathing wa-ters.

Supervising beaches and public bathing from 1 May to 29 September 2019.6 first-aid posts receive MNS (lifeguards) for the summer season. They are num-bered from North to South: P1, P2, P3, P4 (central first-aid post), P5 and P6 (see plan on p. 12).

Kids’ BraceletsFluorescent location bracelets of various colours depending on the areas are avail-able at first-aid posts: P1: red, P2: blue, P3: green, P4: fluores-cent yellow, P5: purple, P6: pink.

DogsThe presence of dogs and other pet mammals is forbidden in all the beach of Argelès-sur-Mer, except in the two following areas: - in the south part of the dyke, near the

“Les Pêcheurs” car park (swimming forbidden at harbour area),

- to the north (near the coastal nature reserve of Mas Larrieu).

In the areas where their presence is per-mitted, they should be kept on a lead on their owner’s responsibility; they must not bathe or be trained from 10.30am and 7pm

Actions in favour of the environment

Argelès pays particular attention to pre-serve its environment and guarantees the quality of life of its inhabitants and guests. We like our region as much as you do, and this is the reason why we would ask you: • to use the litter bins put at your disposal

on the beach and all the resort, • to keep your dog on a lead and respect

the regulations concerning pets on the beach,

• to use dog waste bags available free of charge at Tourist Office,

• not to throw your cigarette butts, • to help us keep our Blue Flag for Clean

Waste Recycling CentreDoor-to-door bulky waste collection is provided free of charge and takes place on the 1st Tuesday of the month after registration on 09 54 61 07 83. It is also available on request from private individuals and professionals (only for objects in good condition). Collected items (furniture, electrical household goods, tableware, computers, games and toys,…) can have a second life. They will be sorted, cleaned, repaired and recovered if need be, and then sold at the solidarity shop (Elne).
