Back then, Montana lacked interstates, bridges, and modern-day transportation systems. In fact in many parts of the state, transportation was nothing more than single-lane, dirt roads. Conversations and collaborations at work made John and Joe realize they shared a common goal—they wanted to create solutions to help pull Montana “out of the mud.” So they put their passion to the test, and in 1945 built a start-up business housed in John’s home. From day one at Morrison-Maierle, John and Joe decided their main goal was client satisfaction and the way they were going to achieve that was to create solutions that helped them build better communities. They approached their business like they built engineering projects—one step at a time and with integrity, commitment, respect, and excellence. These four words became our building blocks and symbolize the way projects are designed and clients are served today. As a result, Morrison-Maierle has been creating solutions throughout the western U. S. for more than 70 years. From two engineers with deep commitments to communities, Morrison-Maierle has grown into a Top 500 Design Firm that is built on four core values. WHO WE AREJohn Morrison and Joe Maierle met while working for the

Bridge Division of the Montana Highway Department in the 1930s.

Our firm uses these building blocks to create solutions for buildings, airports, land development, natural resources, mining, surveying, transportation, and water-wastewater projects.

■ ARFF Training CentersOur staff of experienced engineers, planners, and

construction representatives provides a full range of services

like grant administration, planning, design, and construction

management. For more than 70 years, Morrison-Maierle

has steadily built relationships within the ARFF aviation

community. We deliver quality projects that meet our

clients’ needs and comply with federal and state regulations.

We take very seriously the risk emergency personnel put

themselves into on a daily basis and work hard to ensure

that every training center we design is up to the challenge.

■ Rocky Mountain Emergency Services Training Center

Features and Highlights• Spill Fire Trainer (Propane)• Specialized Aircraft Fires Trainer (Propane)• 11,700 SF Training & Classroom Building• Cost - $7.0 Million• Location – Helena, Montana

Morrison-Maierle provided full service engineering services required to bring the Rocky Mountain Emergency Services Training Center (RMESTC) on line in 1996. The RMESTC is a state-of-the-art ARFF simulator with a full Spill Fire Trainer (SFT) and a specialized Aircraft Fire Trainer (SAFT) driven by computerized control for consistent, safe and realistic training.

■ Alaska Region Aircraft Training Center

Project Features and Highlights• Spill Fire Trainer (Propane)• Specialized Aircraft Fires Trainer (Propane)• 23,460 SF Training & Classroom Building• Cost - $13.0 Million• Location – Kenai, Alaska

The all-weather Alaska Regional Fire Training Center went into operation in 1998. Unique to this design is a Non-FAA lease areas on the second floor that included provisions for future expansion of the class room area and vehicle storage area. The owner chose to pay the additional cost of the non-FAA areas in order to take advantage of the building costs which were provided by the FAA AIP grant.

■ Dallas/Fort Worth Int. Fire Training Research Center

Project Features and Highlights• Burn pit reconstruction• A-380 Trainer› A-380 mockup with correct height and access dimensions› Multiple access points› 10 internal fireplaces with multiple flashovers› 2 levels of internal firefighting› Engine, APU and wheel/brake fires› Running fuel fires utilizing hydrocarbon fuel› Cargo firefighting level skin penetration points› Complete access drive on surface• Fully automated drain system• Treatment area for unburned hydrocarbon fuels and training form• Ability to recycle water for use in the burn pits

A-380 Multi-purpose Trainer is currently the only A-380 mockup in the United States, providing students a one-of-a-kind, realistic experience necessary to prepare for a real aircraft incident. The trainer offers multiple perspectives challenging everyone from the first responding ARFF firefighters to incident command staff.

■ San Bernardino Emergency Services Training Center

Project Features and Highlights• Spill Fire Trainer (Propane)• Specialized Aircraft Fires Trainer (Propane)• 25,180 SF Training and Administration Building• Cost - $15 Million • Location – San Bernardino, California

The two story building includes a second level control tower used as the computer command center and observation site for live-burn training exercises. The center is designed to facilitate aircraft fire training, runway incursion, command/control and aircraft crash victim evacuation curriculum. The building houses training vehicles

and other equipment. It serves as the maintenance shop for the Training Center. The ARFF vehicle bay also doubles as open air classroom space to facilitate hands-on equipment repair exercises.

■ Los Angeles Co. Emergency Services Training Center

Project Features and Highlights The Los Angeles County HAZMAT City Trainer is a state of the art facility that uses multiple types of props to simulate the presence of hazardous material by using sight, sound, touch and smell. Each of the trainee’s senses are put to the test when each scenarios begins. The fully automated touch screen control has complete control with the ability to change and modify each training scenario as they progress. The HAZMAT trainer has live fire, simulated smoke, odor, realistic light, sound and color liquids emitting from actual props found in warehouse situations.
