Perimeter of a Rectangle
• The perimeter is the distance around a figure.
• The formulas are:P = 2L + 2WP = 2 (L + W)
• Measured in single units.
15 in.
8 in.
P = 2(8 in.) + 2(15 in.) P = 2 (8 in. + 15 in.)
P = 16in. + 30 in. P = 2 (23 in.)
P = 46 in. P = 46 in.
Perimeter of a Square
• The perimeter is the distance around a figure.
• The formula is:P = 4s
• Measured in single units.
9 in.
P = 4s
P = 4(9in.) or 4 x 9 in.
P = 36 in.
Perimeter of a Triangle
• The perimeter is the distance around a figure.
• Add up all three sides. P = A + B + C
• Measured in single units.
5 inches
5 inches 5 inches
P = A + B + C
P = 5 in. + 5 in. + 5 in.
P = 15 in.
Area of a Rectangle
• The number of square units needed to cover the surface of a figure.
• The formula is: A = L x W• Area is measured in square units.
14 in.
9 in.A = L x W
A = 14 in. x 9 in.
A = 126 square in.
Area of a Square
• The number of square units needed to cover the surface of a figure.
• The formula is: A = s² or A = s x s• Area is measured in square units.
6 in.
A = s² A = s x s
A = 6 in.² A = 6 in. x 6 in.
A = 36 sq. in. A = 36 sq. in.
Area of a Triangle
• The number of square units needed to cover the surface of a figure.
• The formula is: A =½bh or A = bh
2• Area is measured in square units.

A =½bh A = ½(5 in. x 4 in.)A = ½ (20 sq. in.)A = 10 sq. in.
Volume• The volume is the amount of
space occupied by a three-dimensional object.
• The formula is V = L x W x H• Volume is measured in cubic units.
5 in.
2 in.
5 in. V = L x W x H
V = 5 in. x 2 in. x 5 in.
V = 10 sq. in. x 5 in.
V = 50 cubic in.
