The Millennium Stadium

• The Millennium Stadium is the national stadium of Wales, located in the capital city,Cardiff. It is the home of the Wales national rugby union team and also frequently stages games of the Wales national football team, but is also host to many other large-scale events, such as the Tsunami Relief concert, the Super Special Stage of Wales Rally Great Britain, the Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain, and various music concerts. It was built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

• The stadium opened in June 1999, and the first major event to be held was an international rugby union match on 26 June 1999, when Wales beat South Africa in a friendly by 29–19, before a test crowd of 29,000. With total seating capacity of 74,500, it is the third largest stadium in the Six Nations Championship behind the Stade de France and Twickenham, which is the largest. It is also the second largest stadium in the world with a fully retractable roof, and was the second stadium in Europe to have this feature.

National  Eisteddfod of Wales

• An eisteddfod (Welsh: [ə(i)ˈstɛðvɔd]; plural eisteddfodau [ə(i)stɛðˈvɔdaɨ]) is a Welsh festival of literature, music and performance. The tradition of such a meeting of Welsh artists dates back to at least the 12th century, when a festival of poetry and music was held by Rhys ap Gruffydd of Deheubarth at his court in Cardigan in 1176 but, with the decline of thebardic tradition, it fell into abeyance. The present-day format owes much to an eighteenth-century revival arising out of a number of informal eisteddfodau. The closest English equivalent to eisteddfod is "session"; the word is formed from two Welsh morphemes: eistedd, meaning "sit", and bod, meaning "be".

The Highlands

• The area is sometimes referred to as the "Scottish Highlands." It was culturally distinguishable from the Lowlands from the later Middle Ages into the modern period, when Lowland Scots replaced Scottish Gaelic throughout most of the Lowlands. The term is also used for the area north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault, although the exact boundaries are not clearly defined, particularly to the east. The Great Glen divides the Grampian Mountains to the southeast from the Northwest Highlands. The Scottish Gaelic name of A' Ghàidhealtachd literally means "the place of the Gaels" and traditionally, from a Gaelic-speaking point of view, includes both the Western Isles and the Highlands.

• The area is very sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges dominating the region, and includes the highest mountain in theBritish Isles, Ben Nevis. Before the 19th century the Highlands was home to a much larger population, but due to a combination of factors including the outlawing of the traditional Highland way of life following the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the infamous Highland Clearances, and mass migration to urban areas during the Industrial Revolution, the area is now one of the most sparsely populated in Europe. The average population density in the Highlands and Islands is lower than that of Sweden, Norway, Papua New Guineaand Argentina.

the Scottish National Gallery

• The Scottish National Gallery is one of Scotland’s top free visitor attractions and Edinburgh’s second most-visited attraction after the Castle. It is made up of three interconnected buildings, right in the heart of Edinburgh. The Gallery is home to a major part of Scotland’s sensational national collection of fine art; the Academy is one of Europe’s premier venues for international exhibitions; and the Gardens Entrance, which lies beneath the two buildings, connects them together with areas for shopping, learning, eating and drinking.

the Giant’s Causeway

• Situated on the North coast of Ireland in County Antrim (about two miles north of Bushmills, 11 miles from Coleraine and 13 miles from Balllycastle), the Giant’s Causeway is an area of approximately 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption; however the legend is more convincing for those who prefer a more colourful story.

• The Giant’s Causeway plays a major part of Ireland’s heritage, attracting visitors from around the world each year since it was first documented in 1693 and realistic sketches were published in 1740. The Giant’s Causeway has often been described as the Eighth Wonder of the World and was declared as Ireland’s first World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1986. Once you have visited, you will quickly see why it has become Ireland’s top tourist attraction.

• Употреблениtу артиклей с именами собственными (articles with the proper nouns).

конференц-залов и памятников: the Bolshoi Theatre (Большой театр) the Coliseum Theatre (театр «Колизей») the Royal Opera House (Королевский оперный театр) the Hermitage (Эрмитаж) the Royal Academy of Arts (Королевская академия художеств) the National Gallery (Национальная галерея) the British Museum (Британский музей) the Michelangelo Hotel (Отель «Микеланджело») the King David Hotel (Отель «Король Давид») the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Концертный зал королевы Елизаветы) the Hilton Hotel (Отель «Хилтон») the Red Lion (паб «Красный лев») the Lincoln Memorial (Мемориал Линкольна) the National Film Theatre («Национальный дом кино») the Nelson’s Column (Колонна Нельсона)

Названия кораблей, известных поездов, а также музыкальных групп, только если имя существительное во множественном числе (в иных случаях артикль не требуется): the Titanic (Титаник) the Trans-Siberian Express (Транс-сибирский экспресс) the Oriental Express (Восточный экспресс) the Bullet Train (сверхскоростной пассажирский экспресс) the Beatles («Битлз») the Rolling Stones («Роллинг Стоунз») но Gorky Park («Парк Горького») ABBA Queen

Названия английских и американских газет: the Times the Observer the Sun the Washington Post the Morning Star the Mirror the Independent и т.д. (исключение – газета «Today»).

Page 18: Are you proud of your country? Year 7, unit 6, lesson 5.

Перед названиями иностранных газет артикля нет: Le Monde Pravda Обычно у журналов и некоторых периодических изданий артикль отсутствует, но определенный артикль с именами собственными такого плана тоже возможен, поэтому встретить можно и его: Newsweek Wall Street Journal New York Post Geographical Magazine Reader’s Digest Sporting Life the Economist the Journal of Psychology the Guardian the New Dawn the New Musical Express the Sunday Telegraph

Наименования организаций, политических партий: the UN (the United Nations) – ООН, Организация Объединенных Наций the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) – Британская радиокорпорация the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) – ФБР, Федеральное бюро расследований the Red Cross – Красный Крест the Democratic Party – Демократическая партия the Labour Party – Лейбористская партия the Cooperative Party – Кооперативная партия

General Electric

Названия большинства политических и государственных учреждений: the House of Commons (Палата общин) the Senate (Сенат) the Supreme Court (Верховный суд) the Foreign Ministry (МИД – Министерство иностранных дел) the Navy (Военно-морские силы) но: Parliament (но The Houses of Parliament) (Парламент) Congress (Конгресс) Whitehall (Английское правительство) Westminster (Вестминстер)

Page 19: Are you proud of your country? Year 7, unit 6, lesson 5.

• Названия спортивных событий: the Olympic Games (Олимпийские игры) the World Championship (Чемпионат мира) the British Grand Prix («Британский Гран-при») (автомобильные гонки)

• Названия сооружений, отдельных уникальных зданий: the Great Wall of China (Великая Китайская стена) the Kremlin (Кремль) the Tower (Тауэр) the Winter Palace (Зимний дворец) the Royal Pavilion (Королевский павильон)

Westminster Abbey Hyde Park London Zoo

Page 20: Are you proud of your country? Year 7, unit 6, lesson 5.

Carnegi College Allhallows School Birkbeck College Cambridge University Marlborough College

Menginsky Street Gorkii Street Regent Street Broadway Park Lane Trafalgar Square St. James’s Park Red Square Central Park Piccadilly

• Но и здесь присутствуют исключения: the Wall Street the High Street the Strand

Кстати, у названий шоссе и автотрасс вполне возможен определенный артикль: the A2 the New Seattle Highway

Page 21: Are you proud of your country? Year 7, unit 6, lesson 5.

Например: We met on Tuesday. We met on a Tuesday.

д. Однако не забываем про употребление определенного артикля с именами собственными данной группы в присутствии слова «language»: the English language the French language и т.п.
