ALK stands for “Automated Lamellar Keratomileusis”. This procedure has been performed for over 40 years. This is very similar to LASIK. A corneal flap was created with the same type of device.
Tissue was then removed by another pass of the same device, removing a pre-calculated thickness button of tissue and then the flap was replaced. The problem with this procedure was in the accuracy and predictability.
PRK or Photo Refractive Keratectomy has been performed for 10 years. This procedure involved using an excimer laser through all the layers of the cornea
Although it was very accurate it did not heal rapidly because the top layer of epithelium required up to 3 days to heal. Stability has been shown with this procedure for 10 years with no loss of effect
LASER procedures much more accurate
