It has been truly wonder- ful to see all of our students growing academically, emotionally, and socially. Much of our academic focus continues to revolve around STEM. Specifically, Engineering Design Pro- cesses and supporting students’ development in thinking like scientists and engineers through Claim-Evidence-Reasoning scientific writing opportunities. It was great to see so many of you at Ardmore’s STEM Family Engineering Night on Tuesday, 3/31! Energy around STEM seems to be contagious! Staying committed to our STEM focus, most class- rooms are embarking on their second STEM teach-back events; be looking for information from your student’s classroom teacher regarding upcoming times/dates. Additionally, I’d like to remind you that we are holding Ardmore’s inaugural Parent University on Thursday, 4/23 from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. We hope to see you there! The months of April through June also signify that for 3rd through 5th grade students, state testing season has arrived. Third grade students completed the English-Language-Arts portion of the new state assessment over a three-day span during the last week of March. However, the bulk of our testing will take place during May and even into the first week of June. As educators and parents, we know that students perform better on assessments when they have a full night of sleep and eat a balanced breakfast the morning of assess- ments. We encourage parents to be mindful of these two factors during state testing sea- son. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Ardmore’s amazing PTSA for supplying snacks for all our 3rd through 5th grade students on their respective testing days. There have been many questions from both educators and parents alike regarding Wash- ington’s new Smarter Balanced Assessment. If you are curious about Smarter Balanced, and would like to know more about Washington’s grade-level standards (Common Core State Standards), please consider reviewing two terrific resources below: http://yourchildsprogress.com/ http://wa.portal.airast.org/ Thank you so very much for all of your support in helping our students continue to grow and flourish. "Kaboom!"

Congratulations to the team of Abdul H., Abdul M, Aidan, Colin, Ian, and Riley (the "Kaboom Boys") for an amazing job in the Global Reading Challenge. It was the first time a team from Ardmore has made it to the city finals! The boys first won the East Bellevue compe-tition (on home turf!), then performed great representing Ardmore at the city finals. What is the Global Reading Challenge? Each year, King County Li-brary System (KCLS) and local public school districts encourage 4th and 5th grade students of all reading levels to engage in teamwork while reading some of the best in children's literature during the Glob-al Reading Challenge. KCLS children's librarians choose 6 titles suit-ed to young readers' interests. Teams of 4th and 5th graders across the county challenge other schools to answer questions about the selected books. Some of the objectives of the challenge are to:

• Promote the love of reading and have fun

• Foster teamwork among students with diverse reading skills

• Promote the use of public libraries as neighborhood and community resource centers

Introduce children to a wide variety of literature and multicultural reading materials

Art News During the last couple weeks, stu-dents have been finishing up their painting projects that they started in February. During the end of the month and start of April, students will be moving on to a new topic- print-making.

Printmaking is an exciting art-making technique, and students will be learn-ing about the variety of printmaking processes that artists use. For their own printmaking project, students will be exploring some different printmak-ing processes. Kindergartners will be making collagraphs using cardboard and foam. 1st and 2nd graders will be creating their images with glue draw-ings. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be using foam sheets to draw their imag-es. They will be focusing on the ele-

ment of texture, and including differ-ent kinds of texture in their drawings. All grade levels will learn about the process of printing their image and make their own edition of their image. Students will be able to print their im-age multiple times using different col-ors, which is one of the great things about printmaking!

In addition to printmak-ing, 3rd graders will be learning about the pro-cess of making glass art. In April they will be visiting the Museum of Glass on a field trip and will also have a Museum educator visit the school to teach them about this fasci-nating art medium!

If you would like any more information on what your child is

learning in Art Class and their pro-gress, please feel free to visit the Art Room or send an email to Ms. Eggink at [email protected].

The Northwest Opera In the Schools, Etc. (N.O.I.S.E.) performed at

Ardmore Elementary for all kindergar-ten through fifth grade students on

March 17.

They performed a shortened version of the opera “Daughter of the Regi-ment.” Students had preview and

follow-up lessons during music clas-ses. Performers answered questions afterwards and students showed their appreciation with thoughtful questions

and enthusiastic applause.

What a great experience for our Ardmore students!
