Welcome to Issue 3 of Ardea, the multilingual short-form poetry journal.
It contains the work of poets writing in the modern traditions of haiku, tanka and haibun, and once again with several new languages and contributors. All poems are presented in two or morelanguages, one of which is English.
We hope that you will enjoy reading Ardea, and look forward to your submissions.

Abraham Freddy Ben-Arroyo is a retired professor of Structural Engineering atthe Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Born in Bulgaria, he immigrated to Israel during WWII and since then has lived in Haifa. He began writing haiku more than 25 years ago, after attending Zen training. His work has appeared in Notes from the Gean, Multiverses, The Mainichi and Shira Hadasha (in Hebrew).

Mother tellsThunder and lightning. A crashing sound. In the corner by the stove, grandma, her hands folded on her apron. She is praying. That is what she does during thunderstorms.
We children, five in all, at the kitchen table, quiet like mice. Another lightning flash. We wince. Jochen, my little brother, slips his hand into mine, his eyes closed. The candle-light flickers. Finally the intervals become longer.
Then silence. We breathe a sigh of relief.

Naturally, we liked the jolly drivers best, the ones who joked with us or just smiled silently to themselves when things got a bit uproarious on the back seatsof the school bus. When one of these popular drivers was dismissed, we were shocked and upset for the day or two it usually takes school kids to get over things that don’t menace them directly. There was a hushhushness about the whole thing and we never found out what transgression had taken place.Driver Shaikh, always stern-faced under his khaki turban, was not one of the popular drivers. He tolerated no nonsense on his bus. It was only much later that it occurred to me that he wore a turban because he was bald.Driver Shaikh was employed by the institute my father worked in. One day he came home to pick up my father in one of the institute cars. “Your father is a noble man”, he said to me out of the blue as I loitered at the gate waiting for my father to come out of the house. I had no idea what he meant. My father was just ... my dad.When Driver Shaikh died of a heart attack, I was inexplicably sad.

Dusk faintness
There is just the faintest tinge of blue in the grey evening sky. The drizzle is so faint that I have to wait for a few more miniscule stabs of coolness on my skin before I’m sure it’s real. The movements of the black and white cat in my
neighbour’s garden are so slow and deliberate that it’s tempting to think it too is under the spell of this crepuscular timidity.But there’s nothing faint about the bee eaters. Though their trills are not loud, they have a bell-like clarity. Flying in purposeful squadrons, they flit back and forth across the sky in their untiring search for insects. And now the rain drops have become a little bigger and make a soft sound on the leaves …

For some strange reason, I was thinking of Mars. I’m not sure why. But, the thought came to me that there isn't any more mystery to the planet. Rovers and scientific exploration have ruined its magic. The canals are gone and so are the tentacled Martians. Someone else’s Garden of Eden is no more. Mars is now a celestial object of rocks and dust with a bit of ice and lots of wind.
