Arctic Stud Survival Guide

"This is the frozen heart of the Upper Hassayampa River...Home to the world's greatest Winter Sporting Event:

THE ARCTIC STUD CHALLENGE!Jack Zorbetta, 3 Time World Champion

"During the wintry weeks that surround the saturnalian solstice, denizens of this densely forested, sparsely populated and generally inhospitable glacial anomaly, (rumored to be somewhere betweenMinocqua, Wisconsin and Fairbanks, Alaska) spend their sub-zero days and nights riding, racingand rampaging through the snow-covered wilderness in a frenzy of fierce, albeit friendly, competition!

Gloria Skeester, WIDB-TV Anchorwoman

"Card-Playing, Sled-Racing, &/or the occasional Hunting Trip might get the average man through anaverage winter, but here on the Upper Hassayampa, where the average winters are fifteen monthslong, folks need a bit more excitement."

Ivan Awfolich, Legendary Rider

"Poker is a game of chance; the outcome dictated by the hand that is dealt. But if you give everyplayer an equal opportunity, 'level the playing field' so to speak, …then it becomes less about chanceand more about strategy, skill, perseverance and, dare I say it, courage. I put it to you, gentlemen, there is more "scrambling" than gambling going on here."

Bjorn Tewryde, Infamous Super-Fan…in the opening to his landmark "Legalize Scrambling" speech to the Hassayampa Indian Gaming Commission.

"OK, some of the rules have changed this year, so pay attention. The basic concept is still just a “Poker Run”. Grab asled, find five cards, and then head to the Finish Line. The Race Ends 90 seconds after the first player finishes, andthe Player holding the best 5-card poker hand at the end of the Run Wins the Round!

"As in previous years, Players who think they have a winning hand can "Bump the Bet" (which raises the stakes forall other Players) at any time throughout the race. This year, however, players who wish to "Fold" (to minimize theirlosses) must finish the race first.

"Violent Player-to-Player confrontation is, as always, greatly discouraged… except when absolutely necessary. EachSled is equipped with a Turbo Booster, Chassis-Mounted Machine Guns and "Lil' Stinker" Heat-Seeking Missiles. Inaddition, the following auxiliary weapons and upgrades have now been approved for use: Dual Chainguns, Tri-Nitro-Toluene, Toxic Sludge, Turbo After-Burners, Snowplow Armor and of course, Snowballs.

"…Moreover, thanks to some spirited lobbying by CARP (Citizens Against Religious Persecution),Players are now free to recite prayers, carry talismans and/or invoke the wroth of the Ancient DampOnes in accordance with their individual beliefs.

"Lets all thank all of our local sponsors, who maintain the trails all season long, and welcome back our biggestcorporate sponsor: Evilbrau Beer, whose generosity has made possible this year's One Hundred Thousand Dollargrand prize!"

Karl Bratslinger, Restaurateur

EVENT SCHEDULEOver 126 levels & 81 squaremiles of unrestricted chaos!

Hazelhurst Open InvitationalOpen Event… Sponsored by the

Hazelhurst Ice Hogs

This is the most straightforwardcourse, in every sense of theword. The Event consists ofseveral “upriver” Runs from theHazelhurst Marina to a point justnorth of the Awfolich Industriesdistribution center. Cards areplentiful and the Finish line iseasy to find…. making this theperfect course for NovicePlayers to learn the basics.

Boskeydell Delta DashStud Event… Sponsored by

Billy’s Burger Bungalow

This Event introduces players tothe challenges of cross-countryracing. The Event consists offourteen Runs from a singlestart location to a variety offinish locations in the parkinglots of prominent Boskeydellarea sponsors. Remember thatthis is an Stud Event, (3 CardsUp, 2 down), which means thatRiders may now try to Bluff theirway to victory.

Arctic In DarknessStud Event… Sponsored by the

Snickering Pines Motel

This optional Midnight Runplaces greater emphasis on theuse of stealth to avoid potentiallydangerous situations. Limitednight vision and the effects of"toxic sludge" play a large part inthese Runs. Be warned... theRiders that frequent these latenight Runs will do anything for abuck. It's not uncommon for oneRider to put a cash "Bounty" onan opponent's head!

Bear-Dump BlacktopStud Event…

This is NOT an Official Event!

Warning: Thrill-seekers love thisdangerous and almost certainlyillegal misuse of a 5-mile stretchof the Hassayampan Highway. This "Endurance Event" wasofficially stopped years ago dueto the number of incidentsinvolving foul-tempered Bears.Riders without adequate healthinsurance are urged not toparticipate.

Makanda Canyon CircuitStud Event… Sponsored by the

Dire Wolf Gun Club

Navigation skills enter into playin and around this historicmining town, since each of thefourteen Runs that comprise thisevent begins and ends in theparking lot of a differentMakanda Area sponsor. Ridersare urged to exercise cautionwhen exploring abandoned MineShafts. It is rumored that it ispossible to "teleport" from oneplace to another through the useof certain ancient ruins.

Lost WeekendStud Event… Sponsored by the

Porcupine Pub Darters

The Porcupine Mountain"Mystery Runs" feature finishareas which are undisclosed atthe start of each Run, soPlayers don’t know wherethey’re going until after they’vepicked up five cards. ThePorcupine Mountain sponsorsfor this event pride themselveson the difficult, and oftentreacherous, course conditionsinherent in this rugged mile-highcourse. These Runs are alsothe first to use Wild Cards.

Blindman’s BluffBlind Event… Sponsored by

Arcatonic University

The folks of Finnsmouth Bayhave been hosting these "BlindMystery Runs" for longer thananyone can remember. Expectto see Spellcasting playing agreater part in this contest thisyear, since the rules againstdemonic interference have beenset aside.

The Evilbrau BreweryBlind Event… Sponsored by the

Evilbrau Brewing Company

The Hassayampa River Run isseldom won by anyone otherthan an Evilbrau Employee. Notsurprising, since much of thisfinal part of the course is oncorporate property. It’s almostas if employees have a “homefield advantage” …since they

always seem toknow just where tolook for the cardsthey need. Playerwill have to useevery skill, strategy

and weapon they’ve acquiredalong the river if they hope totake home the Grand Prize!

Dagonaway BayMixed Event… Sponsored by the

Mystic Order of the Velcronomicon

Warmer temperatures and openwater, caused by unusualvolcanic activity here at theheadwaters of the Hassayampa, make this a particularly odious, hazardous and unpredictableseries of Runs. This island-hopping, "Champions Only"Event usually marks the end ofthe Arctic Stud season.

WEAPONS AND ITEMS

Machine GunsThere are Dual Mounted Machineguns built-into each Sled. A full clipholds around 45 Rounds. Each Bullet = 1 Damage Unit

Heat Seeking MissilesMissiles automatically target thenearest mechanical heat source.Though HSMs don't target playerson foot, "splash damage" can stillbe quite deadly. The "Missile LockIndicator" tells the player how manymissiles are heading his way; morethan two is a very bad thing.Direct Hit = 40 Damage Units

DynamiteSome enterprising fan has hiddenTNT all around the course in theguise of an innocent-lookingSnowman. TNT can be droppedfrom a moving Sled or tossed like aSnowball when on foot.Direct Hit = 35 Damage Units

Toxic SludgeToxic Sludge will temporarily causecharacters to become transparent;…virtually “invisible” to Radar, Botsand other Players. Note thatshooting or similar aggressiveactions may cause the Riderto become visible sooner.Possible long-term side effects?

Turbo FuelPicking up either the gas can or thegas pump will add turbo to yourSled’s tank. The can adds twoTurbo units; the pump adds four.Watch out, both of these items willexplode if shot!Explosion = up to 30 Damage Units

StaminaThe various food items scatteredaround the landscape will refill yourstamina when on foot. Staminahelps you run faster, dive farther, and endure more direct snowballhits before falling down.

JokersIf Jokers are available, grab them.Jokers automatically change to giveyou a better hand. (Real Handsonly, though… no “Five of a Kinds”)

Poker ChipsPoker Chips "cover" the Player'sinitial bet. Finding the Chips is likegetting your entry fee returned toyou.

VelcronomiconThe Fish-or-men of FinnsmouthBay have convinced the rulescommittee that Spellcastingbelongs in the Game. A variety ofunique and disturbing Spells willbecome available to any Playerwho holds the Book.- Card SeekerThis helpful Spell shoots off 5-8glowing spheres that search foravailable Cards.- Radar InterruptusThis annoying Spell makes it nearlyimpossible for other Riders to findCards or use their Radar.- CthundheitThis vicious Spell summons the aidof a damp demigod who slaps thesnot out of other Riders.Note that Spellcasting requires fullconcentration. Get off your Sled, use the MouseWheel to select thedesired Spell, and Fire Away!

Sled UpgradesWooden crates may be found thatcontain Sled Upgrades. Drivethrough a crate to smash it open.- Snowplow ArmorNearly doubles a Sled’s structuralintegrity as well as the damage tounwary pedestrians.- Turbo AfterburnerTop speed and acceleration areincreased dramatically. Some claimit’s possible to “really fly” with thisupgrade.- Gatling GunsThese dual chain-guns have twicethe capacity and firepower of aSled’s existing Machine Guns. Each Round = 2 Damage Units

Note that upgrades remain on theSled ONLY if the Sled is occupiedat the end of a Run.

Page 7: ARCTIC STUD POKER RUNThough Arctic Stud Poker Run was designed to be a Multi-Player experience, the Single-Player game is an excellent way to improve your understanding of the sport.

Arctic Stud Survival Guide

Did you Know…?An average Sled can absorb100 Damage Units beforeExploding, and an averageRider can withstand up to100 Damage Units before

losing consciousness.

SnowballsWhile off-sled, players can useSnowballs to grab difficult-to-reachCards and smaller items. As aweapon, Snowballs cause damageproportionate to the thrower’sstamina. A Snowball barrage caneven be used to free a sled that'sstuck in a snowdrift. Note thataiming is more-or-less automatic.(You need to be facing in the rightdirection, of course.)

GETTING AROUND

TeleportationThe ancient worshippers ofCthundheit were masters of thearcane art of teleportation. Recentrule changes have restored theseArcane Altars to active use. Thepulsating blue glow that indicatesan active Altar is unmistakable, butthe only way to learn where it leadsis to pass through it.

Propane TanksRunning into one of these will senda Sled flying high into the sky.Sometimes this technique can beuseful; to attain otherwiseinaccessible items. However,“splash damage” is sustained fromthe explosion, so make sure youhave full health before attempting it!

Radar ScreenThe On-Board Radar Screen is thesingle most useful tool a Rider has.You are always in the center ofyour Radar, and your Field-of-Viewpoints upwards no matter whichway you turn.

Using MapsMost events have a detailed Mapthat displays major areas ofinterest. The Course Map is usuallydisplayed while the level is beingloaded, but can also be accessedduring a race to find where theFinish Area is located, view Playerrankings and other useful tidbits. To view a Map, Hit the "H" key.

HydroBurst new

Each Sled is equipped withHydraulic LowRider Technologythat allows Riders to lift their Sledsinto the air for short distances.Must recharge between Hops.To use HydroBurst, Hit "Enter"

Environmental HazardsThe Upper Hassayampa River is anuntamed wilderness; one shouldnever underestimate the dangerthat waits around the next bend.Open Water…should be avoided. Sleds willfloat for a short period of time, butcontrolling a sled in deep water isnext to impossible.Open Flame…will damage your Sled; try not todrive through it.Heavily Wooded Areas…block visibility, and some treesare harder than others. Proceedwith caution & watch out for bears.Toxic Sludge Pits…are more common in recentyears. While some riders use theunique properties inherent to thesludge to sneak around unnoticed, the long term effects have not beendetermined.

Troublesome LocalsWhile a Green Blip on the RadarScreen will usually indicate a Rideron foot, this is not always the case.Wild Bears…have been known to knockRiders from their Sleds and stealthem. Joyriding Bears usually tire oftheir sport within a few hundredyards.Undead Skinwalkers…still haunt manyancient native burialgrounds. Fast andfearless; these spiritshate humankind.Disgruntled Kamikaze Goblins…wearing dynamite kimonosshould be avoided at all costs.

Incantations new

It is rumored that if you shout“Cast Maxgas” while playing, allTurbo items will be worth 4X!…or, if you say “Cast MaxPup”you’ll get all Power Upgrades in asingle Crate. But that’s just silly.

GAME VARIATIONS

"OPEN" - All Players' Cardsare displayed Face Up at the topof the screen beneath theirnames. Being able to seeeveryone else's cards makesit more difficult to "Bluff"…and therefore most veteranRiders consider it to be agame for beginners.

"STUD" - All Players' Cardsare displayed 3-Up / 2-Down atthe top of the screen beneaththeir names. This peek into thehands of other players is thepreferred method of play formost Riders… since it allowsplayers to "Bluff" otherPlayers.

"BLIND" - All Players' Cardsare displayed Face Down at thetop of the screen beneath theirnames. This version is not forthose who take a lightheartedapproach to competition.

The Stud RidersEach of the 37 Riders has their ownunique personality and abilities.Individual attributes like Normal,Nasty, Stupid, Speedy, Vengeful,Hunter, Bluffer, Coward, Crafty,Shortsighted, Farsighted, etc., willaffect the way they interact withyou. The descriptions in the RidersFolder in the Single Player Menuwill help you learn their strengths &weaknesses. Select the “DifficultyLevel” that’s right for you.

BotsIn terms of their “skill”, Non-PlayerCharacters, or “Bots” have thesame abilities as human players. They have limited vision and useline-of-sight to find cards andopponents, so Spells that affectsight and visibility will affect themas well. They don’t cheat. Theydon’t know where the “good cards”are any more than you do. They arefamiliar with the terrain, however, and they’re smart enough to targetJokers and other Items when theyneed them.So don’t underestimate them.
