What is a Rubber Dam?A Rubber Dam is a highly efficient water controlling structure whichsignificantly outperforms conventional steel gate systems. It comprises of aflexible, high tensile, rubber-coated fabric bladder, which is permanentlyclamped to a reinforced concrete foundation. The bladder is inflated eitherby air or water, which in turn impounds and controls water flow, and islowered by releasing the air or water from inside the bladder.

FlexFlector® deflector withoverflow during flow control

Arcon AquaPro, in partnership with Floecksmühle, supply thehighest specification Rubber Dam systems available in theindustry today. We have been designing, developing, manufacturing and installing custom built air-filled and water-filled Rubber Dams worldwide since 1984, using the highestgrade Continental® rubber and internationally recognised qualitycomponents, exceeding materials used elsewhere in the industry. These advantages combined with the inherent simplicity of thedesign and unrivalled intelligent control systems, flow controlsand advanced fail-safe systems, make Arcon AquaPro RubberDams the new standard available today.

How does an Arcon AQUAPRO Rubber Damcompare to conventional alternatives?

Simplicity of Design

The rubber bladder is filled using a blower or water pump which is operatedby a sophisticated yet simple to use control system. The bladder is lowered

by means of an exhaust system, which is backed up by a mechanicallyoperated failsafe deflation system in case of a power failure.

Air Evacuation Spacer SystemIn case of air-filled rubber dams, it is important that thebladder lies flat when fully deflated. A unique spacersystem channels the evacuating air to an air-exhaustoutlet, making sure no air pockets are formed thusensuring a flat profile when fully deflated.

FlexFlector® Anti-oscillation &Anti-vibration DeflectorsDue to a number of factors, including variable flowconditions, high overflow, and tailwater, the rubberbladder may oscillate and/or vibrate in fully or partiallyinflated positions. This is resolved by using FlexFlector®deflectors which equalise the ambient pressure with theair pressure behind the curtain of water overflowing thedam. The bladder is additionally stabilised by an antioscillation function in the main Control System.

Anti-abrasion Protection LayerTo provide complete protection against abrasion andimpact by water borne loads and preventing debris fromlodging beneath the bladder, a specially designed Anti-abrasion Protection Layer is attached to the concretefoundation on the downstream side of the Rubber Dam.

Rubber BladderThe AquaPro Rubber Bladder is made up of 100% EPDMrubber which resists weathering, ozone, ultra violet light, the effects of extreme temperatures and significantlyout-performs CR rubbers which are more commonlyused. The AquaPro Rubber Bladder incorporates areinforcement Polyester fabric which gives the bladderits high tensile strength and has a significant advantagein terms of its ‘memory’ of shape during long periods ofdeflation, as well as being 100% watertight incomparison to the absorbent Nylon fabrics traditionallyused. The bladder is available in a range of thicknesses, used in accordance with the conditions on-site.

Anchoring & Clamping SystemThe Anchoring & Clamping System is simple, easy toinstall and provides an airtight/watertight seal.Depending on factors such as the overflow and thedown stream water level, a single or a double anchorline is used to fix the rubber bladder to the foundation. The embedded plates and anchor bolts are normallycast into new concrete foundations, however, they canalso be effectively fixed with resin on existingfoundations.

Integrated and Intelligent Control systemOur sophisticated and fully programmable Control System can beintegrated with operation systems of other related equipment andis designed to accurately retain maximum storage levels, even inthe event of a power failure. The weir can be operated bothmanually and automatically and the PLC programmed to a client’sspecific operation requirements.

Condensate Drainage SystemIn the case of an air-filled Rubber Dam, condensation canoccasionally form inside the bladder, especially where there hasbeen a significant difference in temperature between night andday, and during warmer months. Under these conditions, theCondensate Drainage System effectively evacuates any waterwhich has accumulated inside of the bladder.

Upstream Water Level Control The full range of control offered in Arcon AquaPro Rubber Dams is unique. There are two alternatives to control the upstream water level:

Control Systems

Failsafe SystemsFailsafe Mechanical Deflation SystemUnlike conventional steel gate systems, which require manualoperation of often poorly maintained mechanical parts, theArcon AquaPro Rubber Dam utilizes a failsafe mechanicaldeflation device, which lowers the bladder in the event of powerfailure. Deflation is triggered when the upstream water level risesto a mechanical deflation set point. This set point is configured ata level above the standard electrical set point, thereby allowingfor a safety margin during which either the flow can stabilize orthe power can be restored before deflation occurs. Thisminimises the risk of unnecessary downtime whilst still ensuringsafe operation.

Over Pressure Relief ValveA pressure relief valve is supplied to ensure that the bladderdoes not exceed the allowable inner pressure in the event ofeither equipment or power failure.

Pressure Control SystemThe PLC automatically monitors the pressure within the bladder.Should the pressure significantly decrease below or increase abovethe pressure set point, the PLC will operate either the inflationblower or the deflation valve to correct the deviation and returnthe internal pressure to that of the pressure target. This pressuredeviation is often encountered during the normal diurnal cycle.

Dynamic Level ControlThe control system provides the flexibility to accuratelycontrol the upstream water level to a variable set point. ThePLC automatically responds to water levels above or belowthe set point by decreasing or increasing the internal pressureof the bladder to either pass or store water. This is particularlyimportant in applications involving Hydroelectric Power.

Fixed Level ControlThe control system is also capable of maintaining the bladderin either a fully inflated or fully deflated condition. The PLCautomatically responds to a water level above the deflationset point by fully deflating the bladder. When the water leveldecreases below the inflation set point, the PLC responds byfully inflating the bladder.
