concept INTEGRATION• Purpose and function intertwined with water.• Atrium concept taken from Bologna and Roman Antiquity.• Day-Spa must be close to acqua zones. • Centrally located water core space of gathering.• Surrounded by positive, closed spaces• Flat Building of simple geometry

CONSTRUCTION• Structural grid 2x2m, apparent in the roof• Boxed, enclosed spaces with load-bearing walls. The grid also becomes functional.• Retain temperature and privacy.• Extra transparent spaces, seperated from the boxed spaces. • Sense of place and scaling

SUSTAINABILITY• Bologna stone, local material plentiful in the area, used for boxed spaces.• If mixed with granite it is ideal for heating water spaces• Solar panels on the roof to fulfil energy needs.

MOVEMENTThe seperation between the greeting and food space, which is mostly related to FICO, and the more private wellness services, was fundamental for the design concept.People enjoying the food services, normally dressed, take different routes than those relaxing and enjoying thespa and water spaces, in bathrobes and swimsuits. There is no intersection between the routes of the two activity groups. The space connecting the two are the lockers, that also connect them with the in-betweenactivities of the gym and the meditation space, where someone is dressed casually but shouldnot be as exposed.

The underground acqua zone receives indirect lighting from above, where the foiller is. Apart from its function as a water zone which also communicates with

the massage area and the turkish baths, there can also be projections there relative to wellness and/or FICO.

piraeus center of contemporary art - ntua semester8

The entrance and the space of the art center is clearly marked. The public space surrounding the building also tends to have an upward slope towards the side of the hill in order to facilitate movement towards the back of the

building and to Kastella Hill.

prerequisitesOpen platform for artists and the public to work on, share and showcase art. Flexible spaces to host a wide range of art projects (sculptures, paintings, installations, performances, video art etc).Back 22 meters high wall (Kastella Hill). mountaineers shelter cabin - ntua semester6

PREREQUISITES• A small cabin, made by light materials, located near a cartographed

mountain path. • Constructed in parts, on site, using simple tools and a small workforce. • Surface area totalling 20m2.• Integrated with the wild natural surroundings.• Used by mountain-climbers or trekkers, either for the whole year or just

during winter.• Shelter from the cold, storms and snow.• Reversible structure, without leaving permanent marks on the landscape

apart from the inevitable concrete foundations.• Assumption that it will be situated in a 15-30% slope.

CONCEPTThe structure was designed in wood and the exterior faces in plywood. An intention was to make the building seem like “levitating” above the ground by using this particular base of triangulations, without losing much in rigidity. The building was designed with two spaces, one more public with a wardrobe and a table, to prepare and consume food and drinks, and one more private where the sleeping would occur.

vernacular settlement in corfu - ntua semester5

Systematic AnalysisAnalysis of traditional buildings and complexes from the perspective of both form and construction. In this

case of the vernacular settlement of Kynopiastes, Corfu island, Greece.

The analysis aims to identify its distinct architectural character and

the structural model of its buildings. The roads are pretty narrow, like alleys, and they have that feel even though the houses are not taller than two floors. They are also crooked, with many turns and you never have the sense of walking in a straight line. Their shape is defined by the hous-es’ walls, which are very condensely built and have no regular shape, therefore there is no straight facade line.

Entrance to a house can be in one of 7 different ways:

1) Directly. 2) By broadening the street 3) Through an intermediate space, a front yard.4) Through the road after climbing 2-3 steps5) By making a small recedence, visually marking it.6) Through an outdoors stairway7) From under a dome.

Apart from the main street and a few substreets, which are asphalted, in the old cradles of the settlement they are cobbled, with four different pat-terns using various stones.

lighthouse - a climb to the light - ntua diploma thesisThe old, problematic existing lighthouse, which also lacks any authenticity or a par-ticular architectural value, was decided to be replaced with a new edifice.

The first architectural “gesture” was to place two vertical walls on the cliffs of lefkata, in the most fascinating and characterizing spot in the landscape. That way the lighthouse “joins” the vertical linaments of the cliffs while its base fades inside them. These walls create the impression that they are two blades that come out of the rock, from the earth to the sky, jumping forward towards the sea. That lean forward also illustrates the concept of the leap.

requirementsLighthouse in Cape Doukato in the Southeast end of Leukada island. The cape is a place of great wild beauty and awe, with a lot of history and myths surrounding it. The new intervention proposed will include a museum with exhibitions relative to the history and mythology of the land (the myth of Sappho’s suicidal Leap and other legends and stories from the area), as well as a cafe, an open space and a usability as an observatory. The lighthouse’s incorporation to the landscape is of critical importance, as well as its function as a landmark. The aim of the project as a whole is to design for the visitor a complete spatial, experiential and teaching experience that replaces the prob-lematic current situation (spatial, structural, public and symbolic problems).

underground museum part related to sappho Widely famous is the myth of the suicide of Sappho from the cliffs of Lefkata. Sap-pho, a prominent female poet of antiquity (7th century BC), jumped off that cliff because of her unrequited love for Phaon. There have been many other recorded suicides for heartbreak connected to this locus in history, as well as testimonies of symbolic sacrifices by jumping from the top of the rocks to the sea. This interven-tion preserves the mementos of the place, and aims to alter the negative, frighten-ing and dark tales with the positive, powerful symbol that is the lighthouse.

The spatial quality and the required gradation of light demand this part of the building to be digged, and this was also desired so as to not visually violate the landscape. The underground part instead is a reference to the “darker” me-mentos of the locus, it has to do with a buried past and memories of deaths, so it has an inverse light character: The visitor is guided by light, which pierces the blackness, in contrast with the lighthouse lamp. Walking in there, the path is not straight like a tunnel where only the beginning and the end matter, but it’s crooked, like a wandering, with exhibition spaces in either side.

SECTION bb 1. Stands overlooking the central gathering space. Being roofed, they are a pleasant resting space, while connecting the main route with the heart of the park.2. In that point the skeleton is a tension structure. It has an inclination to drop shadow on part of the route and to define the space of the park.

SECTION cc 1. Game space is in direct correlation with the school. For vegetation high-reaching pine trees were selected to grant a sufficient shadow while being especially resilient.2. Path seperating the playing zone.3. Roofed resting space - hosts bazaars and markets. For vegetation citrus trees were selected, creating a pleasant environment, granting an aroma and needing no special care.4. Part of the main route. 5. The vined skeleton seperates the park from the street traffic at the point where the pedestrian road approaches it.6. Slope with sitting area and view towards the park.

SECTION ee 1. Sidewalk with sitting area and a view towards the park. Vegetation of flowers and citrus trees.2. Square with a double view towards Lycabettus hill and the park.3. Cafe-Bar.

4. The skeleton hides the building behind it and allows the view to the left towards the hill. alexandras avenue park in athens - ntua semester8

SECTION aa1. The slopes are a “barrier” towards the noise of the avenue and turn the attention towards the interior of the park. They are also a pleasant sitting space with a view to the water.2. The water creates a micro-climate and a desirable sound level. In combination with the plants it creates a tranquil atmosphere.3. The continuation of Filimonos Str. interrupts the lake creating a nice passage to Alexandras avenue. 4. A metal skeleton covered by vines - allowing the passing of the street through it. In this point one of its edges can be seen in section.
