A B O U T M E

HI, MY NAME IS GAYAN MUNASINGHE AND I AM 21 YEARS OLD. I WAS BORN IN NEW ZEALAND AND HAVE A SRI LANKAN BACKGROUND AND I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN MELBOURNE FOR 19 YEARS. I GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE IN 2014 WITH A BACHELOR OF ENVIRONMENTS MAJORING IN ARCHITECTURE. I HAVE BEEN INTERESTED IN ARCHITECTURE FOR MOST OF MY LIFE, ESPECIALLY MODERN ARCHITECTURE. AS A CHILD, I LIKED TO DRAW AND DESIGN DREAM HOMES THINKING ONE DAY I WOULD LIKE TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT. MY DESIRE TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT WAS INSPIRED EVEN MORE WHEN MY PARENTS DECIDED TO BUILD A HOUSE AND AN ARCHITECT DESIGNED OUR NEW HOME. I GOT TO SEE THE DESIGN PROCESS AND CREATIVITY PRODUCED BY THE ARCHITECT AND KNEW THAT I WANTED TO DO THE SAME IN THE FUTURE AND HERE I AM ON THE PATH TO BECOME AN ARCHITECT.

I HAVE MOSTLY DONE DESIGN THE TRADITIONAL METHOD OF PEN AND PAPER AS I BELIEVE IT GIVES CHARACTER AND CAN BE UNIQUE COMPARED TO CAD DRAWINGS, HOWEVER WITH TODAYS TECHNOLOGY, ARCHITECTURE CAN BE EXPRESSED IN MANY WAYS WHICH CAN WIN THE CLIENT OVER. DURING MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE, I GOT THE CHANCE TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT SOFTWARE AND DESIGN TECHNIQUES SUCH AS USING GRASSHOPPER TO DO PARAMETRIC DESIGN AND USE PROGRAMS SUCH AS ECOTECT ANALYSIS TO TEST PASSIVE DESIGN.

AT THE MOMENT, I AM LOOKING TO GET EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A DESIGN PRACTICE TO GAIN VALUABLE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE BEFORE STARTING MY MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE AND KEEPING ON TRACK TOWARDS THE FUTURE.

V I R T U A L E N V I R O N M E N T STHIS SUBJECT LOOKED AT DIGITAL DESIGN AS WELL AS FABRICATION. THE BRIEF WAS TO CREATE A LANTERN DEPICTING A NATURAL PROCESS AND MY PROJECT WAS ON THE PROCESS OF A TSUNAMI.

THE DESIGN STARTED FROM CLAY MODELLING WHICH WAS THEN TRANSFERRED INTO RHINO TO CREATE THE DIGITAL MODEL. THE MODEL WAS MANIPULATED IN RHINO USING PANELLING TOOLS TO CREATE SURFACES WHICH COULD BE FABRICATED. THE DIGITAL MODEL WAS UNROLLED AND A CNC PAPER CUTTER WAS USED TO FABRICATE THE PANELS TO CREATE THE PHYSICAL MODEL.

VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS INTRODUCED ME TO RHINO AND 3D MODELLING AS WELL AS FABRICATION.

D E S I G N I N G E N V I R O N M E N T STHIS SUBJECT WAS THE FIRST ACHITECTURAL DESIGN SUBJECT OF THE DEGREE. FIRST WE HAD A SMALL PROJECT TO DESIGN A RIVER STATION FOR THE FERRY ON YARRA RIVER (ON THE RIGHT). THE ANALOGY OF A SNAKE WAS USED TO HAVE A FLOWING MOVEMENT THROUGH THE DESIGN IN MOVING PEOPLE TO AND FROM LAND AND WATER.

THE MAIN PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN AROUND AN EXISTING HERITAGE JUDGING TOWER ALONG THE BANK OF THE YARRA. THE DESIGN WAS A VIEWING DECK FOR ROWING EVENTS AS WELL AS TO SHOWCASE THE SPORTING PRECINT OF THE AREA OF MELBOURNE WITH DIRECTING VIEWS TOWARDS MELBOURNE AND OLYMPIC PARK AND THE MCG. THE DESIGN ALSO ALLOWED USERS TO GET A CLOSER LOOK OF THE HERITAGE LANDMARK JUDGING TOWER.

SITE ANALYSIS IS DONE TO UNDERSTAND THE SITE BETTER AND TO AID DESIGN CHOICES AND TO DESIGN TO THE SITE MORE EFFCIENTLY.

S T U D I O E A R T H‘Herring Island Reconciliation Centre ’

THIS PROJECT WAS LOCATED ON HERRING ISLAND, VICTORIA AND WAS A DESIGN FOR A RECONCILIATION CENTRE ABOUT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT. THE DESIGN CONSISTS OF THREE MAIN AREAS FEATURING AN INDIGENOUS AREA, EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT AREA AND A THEATRE. I USED ELEMENTS OF HIERARCHY AND SEPARATION TO REPRESENT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE INDIGENOUS AND SETTLERS. THE USE OF MATERIALS ALSO REFLECTS THESE ELEMENTS NATURAL EARTHY MATERIALS USED IN INDIGENOUS AREAS AS WHERE CONCRETE AND STEEL ARE USED FOR EUROPEANS AREAS.

THIS PROJECT WAS TO RECREATE THE STUDLEY PARK BOATHOUSE FOLLOWING A MASTER IN WHICH OUR STUDIO HAD FINNISH ARCHITECT ALVAR AALTO.

MY DESIGN INCORPORATED AALTO’S DESIGN ELEMENTS OF USE OF NATURAL LIGHT AND CONNECTEDNESS TO NATURE THROUGH THE USE OF MATERIALS AND SPACE OF THE PROJECT. THE PROJECT FEATURES CLOSED, SEMI-OPEN AND OPEN SPACES THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. A MAIN FEATURE IS THE CENTRAL VOID ALLOWING NATURAL LIGHT TO ACCESS THE BUILDING. THE DESIGN ALSO FEATURES ONE OF AALTO’S MAIN ELEMENTS OF A COURTYARD WHICH CONNECTS THE BUILDING TO THE SURROUNDING SITE.

C O N S T R U C T I O N D E S I G NTHIS SUBJECT COVERED THE PROCESS AND STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION AND THE ESSENTIAL DETAILS NEEDED IN DESIGN TO PREVENT ANY FAILURES SUCH AS WEATHERPROOFING AND FOLLOWING AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS.

THE MAJOR ASSIGNMENT WAS TO CREATE A CUT AWAY MODEL OF A SECTION FROM AN ASSIGNED PROJECT. OUR PROJECT WAS THE DANDENONG EDUCATION PRECINCT BY HAYBALL. THE MODEL WAS CONSTRUCTED IN STAGES OF ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION IN A PROJECT FROM THE FOUNDATION RIGHT THROUGH TO THE FINISHING DETAILS. AS WELL AS THE MODEL, 3 CUT AWAY AXONOMETRIC DRAWINGS WERE PRODUCED TO SHOW FINER DETAIL WHICH CANNOT BE PRESENTED ON THE MODEL.

THE MODEL WAS CREATED AT THE SCALE OF 1:20 AND WAS COMPLETED OVER 8 WEEKS WITH GROUP PARTNER BARRY VO.

S T U D I O A I R‘Turbox ’

THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A STRUCTURE THAT GENERATES RENEWABLE ENERGY FOR THE 2014 LAGI COMPETITION IN COPENHAGEN. OUR METHOD OF RENEWABLE ENERGY WAS WIND AND TO INCORPORATE WIND TURBINES IN OUR STRUCTURE. GRASSHOPPER WAS USED TO CREATE SERIES OF DIFFERENT DESIGNS THAT COULD HOUSE THE WIND TURBINE. WE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO CREATE A MODULE THAT CAN ASSEMBLED EASILY AND CAN BE ADDED TO OR TAKEN AWAY DEPENDING ON THE ENERGY NEEDED. THE VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE IS MOUNTED INSIDE A STEEL WIREFRAME CUBE WITH CONNECTIONS THAT CAN SLIDE TO ASSEMBLE THE DESIRED STRUCTURE.

THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED AS A GROUP WITH SHAWN LEE AND CHRISTINA CALGARO

S T U D I O F I R E - A‘The University of Melbourne Archives ’

THIS PROJECT WAS TO DESIGN A NEW ARCHIVE BUILDING FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE. THE BUILDING NOT ONLY HAD ARCHIVAL STORAGE BUT ALSO HAS A GALLERY, READING ROOM, CONFERENCE ROOM, OFFICES AND A SCHOLARS APARTMENT. I DESIGNED THE BUILDING TO BE MONOLITHIC BUT BE PUSHED IN AND OUT TO CREATE SPACES THAT DEFINE THE FUNCTION INSIDE. THE USE OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS ADDS TO THE FACT OF DEFINING THE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING. THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO CREATE AN INVITING FEELING FOR ALL USERS.

S T U D I O F I R E - B‘The Outre Gallery ’

THIS PROJECT WAS FOR A NEW SHOP FOR THE OUTRE GALLERY. AS WELL AS A GALLERY, THE BUILDING ALSO INCLUDED A BOOKSHOP, CAFE, ROOFTOP BAR AND AN APARTMENT. AS THE PROJECT WAS SITUATED ON THE STREET CORNER OF BRUNSWICK ALSO KNOW FOR ITS STREET ART, I CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT OF THE GRAFFITI PYRAMID. THE BUILDING DESIGN ALSO ACTS AS A CORNER STREET ICON DUE TO THE FORM OF THE BUILDING.

THE ACTUAL BUILDING IS TWO STOREYS PLUS A ROOFTOP TERRACE BUT IS MADE UP OFF FIVE LEVELS. THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED FOR THE FACADE TO BE ACCESSIBLE AT ANYTIME THROUGH EXTERNAL STAIRS AND STEPS. THE IDEA IS THAT OVER TIME, THE FACADE WILL BE COVERED IN GRAFFITI BY LOCAL ARTISTS AND BECOME AN ICON OF THE SUBURB. THE ACCESSIBLE FACADE ALSO HAS HABITABLE SPACES TO SIT DOWN OR TO LOOK INTO THE BUILDING SUCH AS THE GALLERY AREA. THE CENTRAL VOID ALLOWS NATURAL LIGHT INTO THE BUILDING AND ALSO ACTS AS AN ORIENTATION POINT.
