THE INITIAL TASK FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT WAS TO DESIGN A RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX THAT COM-PRISED FIVE EQUAL ROOMS, TWO BATHROOMS AND A SECOND FLOOR DESIGNED TO CODE. A GRID SYSTEM SEEMED LIKE A LOGICAL STARTING POINT.
IN TERMS OF PROGRAMMATIC LAYOUT, WE DECIDED EARLY ON THAT PRIVATE SPACES WOULD BE SEPARATED TO ONE SIDE OF THE HOUSE, WHILE THE PUBLIC SPACES WOULD BE CONCENTRATED IN THE OTHER. THE CARVING OUT OF THE COURTYARD PLAYS AN INTEGRAL IN-BETWEEN SPACE THAT LINKS THE TWO AND ACTS AS A CIRCULATION HUB, ENTRY VESTIBULE AND LIGHT CORE.
THE SITE WHICH WAS PROVIDED HAS A SIGNIFI-CANT GRADE CHANGE FROM THE STREET TO THE LANE. WE DECIDED TO EMBRACE THE SLOPE, AND USE IT TO OUR ADVANTAGE IN TERMS OF THE SEPARATION OF PROGRAM AND LATER THE LARGER CONCEPTUAL MOVES AROUND THE STAIRS, EXTERIOR SPACE AND LANDSCAPING IN GENERAL.

GRASSHOPPING
USING PARAMETRIC MODELLING, WE CREATED A CODE THAT ALLOWED US TO DESIGN A SET OF STAIRS THAT FIT WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF OUR LARGER CONCEPTUAL PROCESS. INSTEAD OF ALLOWING GRASSHOPPER TO SIMPLY CREATE THE BEST SET OF STAIRS WITHIN THE BYLAW REQUIREMENTS, WE FOUND IT NECESSARY TO USE GRASSHOPPER TO FURTHER OUR BROADER DESIGN AMBITIONS FOR THE PROJECT.
THROUGH A SERIES OF EXPLORATIONS WE DETERMINED A WAY TO INCREMEN-TALLY SCALE THE STAIRS, CREATING A STEP-DOWN EFFECT AND MIRRORING THE SITE CONTEXT.

IN THIS PROJECT, WE WERE ASKED TO BEGIN BY GENERATING SCHEMES FOR A TRANSIT HUB IN SURREY-NEWTON BASED PRIMARILY ON STRUC-TURAL SYSTEMS EXPLORED IN PREVIOUS PREC-DENT STUDIES. PROGRAMMATIC DETAILS WERE PROVIDED TO US INCREMENTALLY, AND INCLUDED A RETAIL AND COMMERCIAL PRO-GRAM AND A ROLLER DERBY RINK.
MY PROJECT EXPLORES THE POSSIBILITIES OF COMBINING THREE SYSTEMS: POST AND BEAM, GRID SHELL AND CONCRETE SHELL. IN MY SCHEME A LARGE CONCRETE SHELL, WHICH COVERS NEARLY THE ENTIRE SITE, BECOMES A SECOND GROUND PLANE WHICH CAN BE ACCESSED WHERE IT MEETS THE GROUND AT THE CORNERS OF THE TRIANGULAR SITE. THE SHELL IS PUNCTURED BY BUILDINGS WHICH SUPPORT IT AND PROVIDE RETAIL AND COMMER-CIAL SPACE, AND BY GRID SHELLS WHICH ARE LENDED LATERAL STABILITY BY THE CONCRETE SHELL AND PROVIDE THE LARGE SPANS NEEDED FOR A ROLLER RINK AND A MARKET SPACE.

THE STATION WAS A PART OF A PRECEDENT STUDY IN WHICH STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS WERE INVESTIGATED. THE MODEL DESCRIBES THE SYSTEM OF PRE-TENSIONED ORIENTED STRAND BOARD PANELS WHICH MAKE UP THE ROOF.

THE SITE THAT WE WERE GIVEN FOR THIS PROJ-ECT IS A NARROW TRIANGULAR LOT LEFT OVER FROM THE INTERSECTION OF TWO CITY GRIDS. WE WERE ASKED TO ANALYZE AN ASPECT OF THE SITE AND THEN TO PROPOSE A RESIDENTIAL HIGH RISE WHICH UTILIZED OUR FINDINGS.
I RESEARCHED THE IMPACT OF WIND AND AIR MOVEMENT ON THE SIGHT AND DETERMINED THAT THE BEST APPROACH FOR MAXIMIZING NATURAL VENITLATION WAS TO DESIGN THE BUILDING TO BE LONG AND VERY THIN. THIS WAY ALL UNITS WOULD BE EXPOSED ON EITHER SIDE AND AIR WOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO MOVE THROUGH THE BUILDING.
I DEVELOPED A SIMPLE SYSTEM OF NESTING LARGER AND SMALLER UNITS SO THAT EACH UNIT HAD TWO LEVELS AND A CORRIDOR WAS ONLY REQUIRED EVERY THIRD FLOOR.

IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW TO COMMUNICATE IDEAS VISUALLY, WE WERE GIVEN THE TASK OF DESCRIBING TWO EVENTS DIAGRAMATICALLY. THE CHALLENGE WAS TO FIND WAYS OF EFFECTIVELY DIAGRAMMING EVENTS, TIME AND MOVEMENT IN ONE POSTER.
