P01Exhibition space

1st SEMESTER

The purpose of this project was to create an exhibition

space for a single exhibit, within a given space. The

exhibit I chose determined the compositional idea. The

harmonic curves of a female body spatially translated

through a curved wall, which is the basic element of

space organization. This curvature also achieves to

gradually reveal the exhibit to the visitor while providing

a 3D peripheral view.

P022nd SEMESTER

Dance Studio at Exarchia, Greece

This is a small scale (210 m²) project in the heart of

Athens. The building volumes are placed on both

sides of the plot, in such a way that they follow the

existing building line and massing. At the same time,

it provides a private courtyard on the back side. To

better integrate the adjacent buildings, we keep the

same height. However, the building demonstrates

a modern aspect through the forms and materials

used.

P03Contemporary Museum at Piraeus Port

This major project (2700 m²), began by attempting to redefine the concept of the mu-

seum. We decided that it should be monumental in its expression. To legitimate this

monumentality, the concept of togetherness, joint ownership and easy and open access

for all came up. To achieve monumentality based on these notions, the museum offers

accessibility in the widest possible sense. A “carpet” of horizontal and sloping surfaces

rises from the ground level and covers the building acting as a public platform, as well

as to connect the lower with the upper part of town . At the same time, taking into ac-

count the relationship with an important neighboring building, we created a common

public space.

5th SEMESTER

Page 13: Architecture Portfolio

The first synthetic gesture was to place the main building volumes in such a way as to create the feeling to the visitor of an enclosed space. This space will act like the main courtyard of the museum which will also be used for outdoor exhibitions. This placement was also meant to ensurea good relationship with the adjacent important building.

This diagram shows the attempt to exploit the roof of the building with a sloping path. It looks as if it is “raised” from the ground. Pedestri-ans along the roof of the museum can enjoy the stunning view to the port

Following the previous idea we choose to slope up the roof of the rest of the building aiming at con-necting the lower part with the upper part of the town so it will act as a passage.

The diagram shows the final building volumes formation, which concentrates all the above synthetic ideas

9th SEMESTER

Residential complex at Galata, Istanbul

The brief for this project was to build a residential

scheme (15.000 m²) at Galata, a historic part of

Istanbul. Studying the area, we were charmed by

its “art and craft” character. To help maintain this

character, we decided to include a small technical

school along with dormitories for the students.

Our synthetic idea arises from site analysis and study. Intensive pedestrian flows links Galata bridge with metro station as illustrated in the adjacent diagram. In result, one of our main objectives were to integrate this flow to our design. Building volumes are placed along these flows creating long stripes. Having ramps at the beginning and ending of each stripe, we trans-form our building to an active path for the pedestrians, discharging this intensive flow. Taking advantage of the roof in our buildings, we create views to the religious landscape of the opposite shore. Volumes are also placed in such a way in order to fill the urban network creating a feeling of continuity. The intermediate space between the Zig zag building stripes, gradually reveals the city to the pedestrians - a reference to the narrow streets of the old town.

Urban space at the centre of Athens

The study area is probably one of the few central areas of city that hasn’t yet been formed into its final shape. Thanks

to future removal of Panathinaikos football stadium, the brief was to create a public urban space in the heart of Athens.

The plot extended in between a very busy avenue in the city (Alexandras avenue) on the north and a more quite area

in the South. Our intention was through the design to keep this distinction between the two parts of the plot. We chose

to create a big entrance space along Alexandras Avenue - where the pedestrian flows demand this - while smaller

plateaus encountered at the south part of the plot. Our intention to distinguish the two parts can be seen also from the

materiality. We choose solid surfaces for the busy part whereist we have more natural surfaces for the quite path of the

park. . We tried to keep some areas without any vegetation, to allow space for play whereas in other points, especially

the boundaries of the park, we chose to have dense tall vegetation to act as a noise reduction feature for the site .

8th SEMESTERP05

Page 25: Architecture Portfolio

Our solution was based on the idea of a grid of modular unit. Our unit is a 5x5 me-ter precast conctrete slab. This unit, when placed in series it creates parallel strips. In the same way, the strips creates a path which starts from Alexandras Avenue and ends at Lycabettus hill. We decided to take advantage of the site topography so the units follows the natural inclinations. On these inclined surfaces you can sit, lie down, play etc.

Page 26: Architecture Portfolio

Digital materiality

The brief was simple. How to connect with arches two curved walls using paramet-

ric design. From an architectural standpoint, the two walls could be an istallation on

a public place, where to project different information or artwork. The connection of

two walls with transverse arches provides shade in the pedestrian passing through

it, but also creates a more intimate space.

In this exercise I followed the constructional logic “file to factory” where there is a

direct relation between design and construction. Through parametric design soft-

ware “Grasshopper” I built the model by introducing the parameters as well as data

from geometries designed in Rhino software. Pieces of construction were organ-

ized in a two-dimensional surface so that to be ready for cutting using Laser cutter.

02. Diploma ThesisPedieos river: Activating an axis of public space at Nicosia, Cyprus

The The aim of this thesis is to attach to the bed of Pedieos river its landscape and

environmental value. In a small Mediterranean town, such as Nicosia, public space

didn’t always have the importance it deserved. In the contrary, until recently it was

rather neglected. That’s why we saw in the case of Pedieos river - crossing the island’s

capital - a latent potential and a first class opportunity to design an axis of public

spaces in the form of a linear park, that could potentially lead to a broader network of

public spaces throughout the city.

Pediaios river is the longest river in Cyprus, with a total length of 98km. Stems from the

Troodos Mountains and flows into the Bay of Famagusta, crossing the city of Nicosia.

In the next map shows the wider urban area of Nicosia, while within the circle with a

diameter of 3.5 km is the area in which we will focus

RIVER POSITION

Page 31: Architecture Portfolio

Pedieos river: Activating an axis of public space at Nicosia, Cyprus

The synthetic route begins with a more comprehensive response to the green spaces of Nicosia. So, according to the modern dynamic addressing of green spaces in total, the answer lies in the design of a wider network of green space that appeals to the whole city. These networks consist basically of linear elements that integrate surface elements. So when the river is an eminently linear element in the city, we consider that it may have an important role in this network, becoming the backbone.Regarding the linear elements of our network, beyond the river, is of great importance for us and the axis of Athalassas avenue who integrates directly the two most important green areas of the city - the Pedieos river and Athalassas Park - and has a magnitude sufficient that can receive a pedestrian and bicycle zone as well as planting.

GREEN NETWORK

Page 32: Architecture Portfolio

DESIGNPART

CONCEPT

Using data obtained from the green network we

move on to focus on three sub-study areas.

The first area is an entrance point from the

network of green spaces in the riverbed. It’s

actually the most important entrance to the river,

considering the green network that we have sug-

gested. Its exactly the point were the major axis

of Athalassas avenue meets the Pedieos river.

The second area was selected with natural inter-

est criteria since it is a small eucalyptus forest

in which we attempt to draw a wandering path.

The third and last area was selected equivalently

to the first one scheming an exit from the park

to the town center via a bypass that crosses the

neighboring Municipal Garden.

03. Competitions

The aim of the competition was to design a structure that combines seating, table and

shading in a single morphological whole. At the brief was also the easy assembly and

disassembly.

The basic idea was the transformation of a 50cmx50cm repeated panel, which deter-

mines the whole design. Panels will be combined together creating the surfaces of the

structure. Timber panels will be either solid or louver as shown in the pictures. Exterior

grade timber will be used.

My design idea was awarded 2nd Commendation on youth competition “Loving Out-

doors Product Design Competition”

03. CompetitionsB. Student competition: ”Urban Container”

The proposed solution is based on the transformation of a

rectangular prism with a square floor plan and harmonious

proportions of the golden section in the sides. The specific

form was chosen for ease of manufacture and assembly,

and lower cost of orthogonal structures. The closed phase

is a rectangular prism with dimensions L1.7m W1.65m

H2.60m. When ‘Urban Box’ is open, then with a few simple

gestures by the user, the box is transformed and creates

the necessary spaces. In a full operation mode, it expands

and reaches the external dimensions of L3.00m W2.65m.

Factors such as passive solar shading and ventilation were

also taken under consideration.

My design was awarded 7th place at Greek student com-

petition ”Urban Container” organized by the Greek Institute

C. Young architects competition:

”Smart harbor”

Competition brief was to redesign an old dismissed Adri-

atic harbor area in a play-area / wellness-entertainment

centre that can amuse tourists and citizens. Our idea is

based on a pulsating surface that would act as playground.

The smooth slopes would make possible for the visitor to

walk on every part of the surface. However on some places

where the height below the surface is sufficient we create

some spaces that are related with public spaces, like an

exhibition space, a coffee area and an open theatre. Our

design idea also aims to connect of our area with the rest

of the city network through pedestrian lightweight bridges.

A 01Second-floor additionOriginally built in 1990s with a two whole-floor apartments.

Building coefficient of the region have increased, so the

owner wants an another floor. Based on the current frame-

work I design an open space plan for the more “public”

spaces of the residence. All the rooms open onto a patio

which can function as an extension thereof. The house is

located in Cyprus where outdoor space is very vital part

of a house. A part of the new roof is shaded and can be

utilized.

A 02Suburban residence

The plot is located in a sparsely populated suburban area of Cy-

prus. For the house positioning I took into account its orientation in

order to have shading in summer and solar gains in the winter. The

house is “closed” towards the side the street and “opens” back-

wards with a big backyard.
