Urban Installation

The goal with this project was, by taking a deeper look into the city, choose spaces that called our attention and made us uncomfort-able. The area chose by the group was the back entrance of the university. This area doesn’t re-ceive much care from the administration of the building, generating a very degraded space. This is proven by the amount of graffiti done to its walls. The objective was to bring what was inside of those walls to the outside. The rooms that are turned to this side of the building used to be a model lab and now was turned into a old-chair-storage. A composition was made and with the help of electronic circuits we where able to de-velop a system that was activated when people passed by, and sounds of dragging chair started playing.

Park Brejinho Landscaping The ‘Park of Brejinho’ is located in the city of Belo Horizonte, in the interior of Brazil, and has in its area, seven sources that feed an im-portant watershed. Unfortunately, the growth of the city has damaged those sources. In an at-tempt of preserving this area, and not letting it be ‘consumed’ by its surroundings, we made a proposal of a park were people can go visit and learn more about the importance of its mainte-nance. It has also great potential to be a recrea-tional area to the local population, composed mainly by young couples who live nearby and students from the two universities located in the surroundings. And even just as a short cut to pedestrians. Having that in mind, we proposed a park that could be used by people from different ages at different times of the day. So we pre-dicted areas that could be used by kids and youngsters, such as sports court, playgrounds and a arena for concerts and presentations in general. To elderly people, running and jogging tracks and places to rest and eat.

Office Building

Headquarters of the Regional Energy Company

In an high-density area and the cross-ing of two important avenues, we worked in a ground with high inclination. By analyzing the surroundings we found that, due to its proximity to two important hos-pitals, the office building room’s could be used by doctors and other people working in areas related to health care. To deal with the acclivity of the ground, we planned that both towers would be support-ed by pilotis and a common area was designed to be under the buildings, so people passing by could use it as well. The top floor of the lowest tower would house two restaurants, both for the people who work there and to others.

Infrastructural BuildingLocation: Federal University of Minas Gerais Campus at Belo Horizonte - BrazilSize: 45.717m2

The concept of this building was to design a infra-structure. The only thing that is pre-defined is the main structure made of steel which are modules of 6x12meters. We combined this modules to be ad-justed to the ground. The plan is free and it can be divided as with partitions. Each facede has a range of different types of closing that could be used as needed, considering light, ventilation, sight, rain and direct sunlight. Shades were also designed for each facade.

The modules where arranged in a way a person can come inside the building from different levels, so it can be also used as passage. The levels that can only be accessed by stairs or elevator are considered more private. With this we created a range of differ-ent uses whithin the same building.

Low Budget HouseLocation: Belo Horizonte - BrazilSize: 200m2

Structural walls

Mold to selfmaid bricks

With the budget of approximately 22 thousand dollars, and a ground of 200m2, this house was build we very simple materials and constructive systems the house was planned to be versatile, and to be able to house a family with up to 10 people. The walls were designed with an “U” shape so they could be more ridged and do not need any kind of structure. There is also another kind of wall composed by a brick that can be made in the site. The house can be oriented and po-sitioned in the ground according to the direction of the sun. Ventilation studies were also made to insure its thermic com-fort.

PopUp Architectures that Appear and DisappearLocation: Bastøy Island - NorwaySize: 160m2

This project was made with students from UPM-ETSAM in Madrid. Each week we would exchange docu-ments and by the new data added by our colleagues we developed the program as well as the design. Bastøy Island is a prison known for the comfort its prisoners have. We had to develop a program that was not visible the entire time, so we made a hidden place to those who wished to spend some time relaxing and thinking alone. The entrance to this place is hidden under the pool, so the person has to swim there. This place its composed by 10 levels and the per-son has to climb up and down until the last one in order to get out. The most important feature of this project was that we focus on the process not on the product. We worked with protoplans, protesections and diagrams. The final product should be a plan and a section of an area of 160m2.
