BIOI was born in Pisa, April the 22nd 1990. I’m a student in Building Engineering and Architecture at the Pisa University, and I try to expand my knowledge on various aspect of my field of studies and interests. I’m also interest-ed in photography, and achieved a wide-ranging knowledge in this field. I totally fell in love with graphic design, illustra-tion, editorial design, typography... + Architectural and photograophic surveys of the an-cient Sapienza Building in Pisa, the first Pisa’s Uni-versity Headquarter rised in XV century. This work is the base for futures studies on the building for its restoration after 2012 earthquake.

2012 + Architectural survey of Mazzolla village, Volterra, Pisa, for Architectural Drawing 2 Exam, with prof. ing. M. G. Bevilacqua.

+ Architectural survey of Montecastello city, Pontede-ra, Pisa, for Architectural Drawing 2 Exam, with prof. ing. M. G. Bevilacqua.

+ Six months workshop at the Pontedera’s Urban Center: study of the Montecastello city, analysis of its values and problems, and project of varius ur-ban-scale and architectural interventions.

+ Architectural and photographic surveys of an an-cient Venetian Castle in the Butrint Archeological Park, Tirana, Albany, for Cooperlink Project 2011 whith Pavia University, Elbasan University, ETSAB Spain; collaboration with ing. M. G. Bevilacqua. Be-ing tutor for other students which was working on the site for the survey.

2011 + Architectural survey of the building “Ospedale degli Innocenti” in Volterra, Pisa, for the Volterra’s Univer-sity Laboratory, whit M. G. Bevilacqua.

+ Architectural survey and photogrammetry of San Gavino Church, Porto Torres, for San Gavino’s Study Center and A.S.T.R.O. Laboratory, with prof. ing. G. Caroti.

2010 + Realised various web sites: for private business, for my university class and for my photography studio.

+ Photographer for the book “L’arte dell’abitare in To-scana, Forme e modelli della residenza fra città e campagna”, by Emilia Daniele and Paolo Bertoncini Sabatini, that is, “The art of living in Tuscany, forms and models of the housing between city and coun-try”. A massive photography book on Renaissance villas and homes in Tuscany.

Diving into the greenThe case study selected for the workshop is the water-front of Marina di Pietras-anta: a context with a high environmental value and a great economic poten-tial, but actually mined by a strong social fragility.Starting from the compre-hension of the historical evo-lution of the territory our way passed through the study

of fluxes, car traffic, use of the public areas, architectur-al and urbanistic aspects. Working with Joao Nunes from Proap we developed a masterplan wich re-think the rule of beaches parkings, creating a green belt which connects the sea with the city, giving the waterfront a new rule of suture infrastruc-ture.

Interconnections: the water-front of Pietrasanta appears as a linear system extended for about 3 km, boring and without social qualities; the

parking lots work as a series of closed chambers, usable only along the road-parking-beach axis. Ridiculous green, overwhelming parking lots,

no sea sight, fast traffic: the waterfront is a mere pipe for reaching B point from A. Showing several critical points as, repetition, melan-

cholia, flatness, separation, inconsistency, noise, the wa-terfront is definitely a car-ori-ented system.

Rooms and boxes: The se-ries of private parking lot on the seaside becomes a coor-dinated and interconnected system: the seaside isn’t

usable only transversely, but also longitudinally through a series of green chambers; Inside these chambers an ar-chitectural module, the ‘box’,

can be filled up with ideas, functions, activities, feelings

The box self-generates: the citizens shape it thanks to needs and ideas, through the sharing principle.

A barn in MigliarinoThe project seeks to bring back to life an old and semi-destroyed barn, located in Migliarino–San Rossore–Massaciuccoli Natural Park in Tuscany. With its great internal hight, nearly every combination and solution of space and volume is possi-ble: the project’s goal isn’t a 100% use of the horizon-

tal space, searching for the highest number of rooms and walkable surfaces, but the optimization of light, vol-ume and dynamicity of spac-es, playing with layering of surfaces at different height, juxtaposition of materials and finishings.

It’s all about layers: scat-tering surfaces on different levels, “Layers of life” as Italo Gamberini named the floors,

we achieve a dynamic space and fluid, endless light and prospects troughout all the barn.

Dichotomies. The materials used are few and balanced: clear plaster, white corian, rammed earth, polished dark aluminum framing, birch.

Contrasting with the white-ness of the horizontal sur-faces in corian (which allow continuity between the floor and work-surface of the

kitchen) and warm-white walls with rough finish, both east and west walls are lined with blocks of raw rammed earth — recalling the simple,

rural origins of the building and its context. The birch wood stands be-tween these dichotomies — colors and tactile roughness

of surfaces — used for furni-ture by Alvar Aalto, the Scan-dinavian Maestro was one of the greatest theoreticians of the man-environment

relationship and of romantic functionalist design.

A Library in Gello.Being a point on the edge of a city can be a huge prob-lem for an architecture: fortunately norten districts of Pisa have a high-quality housing, where families and students go searching for low-cost and handy-reaching houses.So a library sitting on both a urban zone and open fields can be the starting point for a new “sub-city-center”.

Inspired by studies, locad examples, journeys, dreams and and chance, the library meets a court-based plan, which is the perfect exam-ple of how a building can create in itself a seed of ur-ban meeting place, a micro city-center where people can — and shall! — interact.The skin is both transparent and protective, creating open spaces, but peaceful.

If everything is well-joined conceptually, why can’t be so in a plan? After studying the optimal dimentions of each space, the only problem is combine every piece, linked as the mindmap shows.

Optimising sun exposure for each zone is necessary, since every room has its needs. Zenith lighting, pho-tovoltaic brise-soleil and micro-pierced panels work togheter for a perfect envi-ronment.

How to plan such a complex building as a library?Creating list of functions re-quired and, of course, joining them together in the easyest, simplier and most functional way: a funciton-mindmap.

Open spaces. Thanks for its position, the library has a wonderful view on Luc-ca’s mountains and endless fields of sunflowers and

corn. Gazebos, benches and stair terraces create a nice and dinamic place where rea-lax, read a book and meet

ing, a cross between reading rooms, offices, hall, audito-rium and the bookshelves. And a great source of light.Inside, all is glass and open

space: everything is perme-ated of light and visible from every corner of the building.

User Friendly.0pen space, full-hight win-dows, zenith windows and clay wall-coverings create a friendly and relaxing space.An open space plan give access to all library’s zones easyly and without efforts.Outside, a series of stairs and terraces, monolithical benches and paths, trees and table-shaped coverings offer a dinamic public park where meet peopel, read a book or simply walk the dog.

Joining the City and the Quarry.An old stone quarry bound-ing a greenless city. What if raw rock spaces become a place where meet each other, live the nature and do climbing?

Entropy. Searching for order into wildness, this projects aim to use geometry to put rationality into casuality.Using the paths trough this

natural/artificial space, the user can “measure” its di-mensions, understanding and admiring the force of nature standing upon men’s

destruction. Three feet under the grass these paths can be easily crossed, reaching again the nature through bo-tanical tracks.

The incredible wall of stone is perfect for climbing. But for beginners and kids, two great sculpture/boulder block rise near the sport shack.The key-word is volume: as the quarry was made from a subtraction of volume of stone, generating new vol-

ume of usable spaces, the project use the same princi-ple to generate public spac-es. Subtracting volumes of stone creates squares where geometric building-pavilions are made of the stone re-moved itself, creating meet-ing places, temporary expos, sport facilities.

A house in San Miniato.Working in an historical context is always hard and interesting. Suturing the old housing tissue with mod-ern interventions needs a careful site’s history study, a deep reading of architectural types, styles and material. The new buildings have to dialogue with the older ones, maybe arguing, but as old lovers, they’ll never split.

Stone and light. A careful study of introspection from the street into the house led to a brise-soleil solution, made with rectangular block

of “pietra serena”, a local stone used since Renais-sance.

Synthesis.Reducing a masterpiece to a paper leaf can be a crime, but sure is a good exercise to learn how to focus on main things.Here’s how color and geome-try explode into Casa Gilardi in Mexico City, by Luis Barra-gan.
