ASSIGNED SITE#1On a hill, famous for its river and its

WW1 battles.

REQUIREMENTS“Aim at 3 spots with 3 axes”. (WTF?)

ASSIGNED SITE#2From our spot, nothing, either far

or close, was visible.

INTIMIDATION#1Most projects developed around the 3

directions. We had none.

QUARRELTeachers still wanted 3 axes.

DECISIONNo axe was ever said to be a visual connection. Then we do it different.

AXIS#1 - PEOPLE

Aligned towards the closest village.

AXIS#2 - WAROnly visual one, aiming at a WW1

monument.

AXIS#3 - RIVERLatent axe, toward its alpine source.

PARK#1Patternized mixing the axes directions.

PARK#2To increase biodiversity, used 4 plants typical of the area, but lost over time.

BUILDINGS#1Studying a critical mass by each

function.

BUILDINGS#2Designed a prefabricated modular cell.

BUILDINGS#3Based on needs, modules combined.

COLORSApplied on buildings after th synthesis of landscape photos into color strings.

STARTING QUESTIONHow would we react if the Lampedusa

detention center were to move to Venice?

SITES. Biagio, island on the edge of the Giu-

decca island, used entirely as dump.

APPROACHTurning imprisonment into living with

architecture, through activities, freedom on the inside, and interaction.

>ARCHITECTURE BUILDS SOCIETY<A unifying super-surface to dwell, work,

teach, learn, develop, evolve. To live.

INSIDE WORLDworking and learning - continuous

coming and going - inner city

OUTSIDE WORLDexchange - pubblic services- humanitarian associations

APPROACH#2Not a structure, but an infrastructure to

make life happen in between.

APPROACH#3A facade, a shape is a statement in con-

servative countries. Not in China.

REGULATIONSNo building can overshadow any

other in the neighborhood.

SITEPalladian villa, restoration+intervention.

RESTORATIONJust follow procedure.

INTERVENTIONNo catalogue stuff. I'ma do me.

INTIMIDATION#1Very few f*cked with Palladio and won.

INTIMIDATION#2Prof.Piana is the main expert at restauration in Northern Italy.

PROF.PIANA#1“Use no glass floor for internal

footbridges: you don't want paparazzi waiting for upskirts.”

GIRL REACTION“I must start from scratch” (WTF?).

GUY REACTION“I could sand the surface” (bullsh*t!).

MY REACTION“Screw that, i'll use glass. But better”.

ENLIGHTENMENT#1Glass as structure is good, as pavement is bad: let’s do a structural pavement.

OUTCOME#1Same resistance, -27% glass used.

OUTCOME#2Less steel needed, -35/40% tot weight.

OUTCOME#3Translucency, no banal transparency.

PROF.PIANA#2 + GLOAT“Very good idea. Fix this thingie and

BUSINESS IN CHINA#1The moods of the Market guide the

construction business in China.

BUSINESS IN CHINA#2The lack of strong planning results what appears to be spontaneity.

BUSINESS IN CHINA#3Soon after construction, people will

start a constant change of the building

APPROACH#1Include this chinese dynamicity in an

ongoing re-design of the highrise.

APPROACH#2Not a structure, but an infrastructure to

make life happen in between.

APPROACH#3A facade, a shape is a statement in

conservative countries. Not in China.

CLIENTWinery in an historical building.

CONTRADICTION#1The building did not look historical at

all.

CONTRADICTION#2In China, historical means also “done

LIKE in the past”.

APPROACH#1“European” historical approach: no

wall touched.

MATERIALSThe bubble structures are local inter-

twined bamboo.
