The private residence club is the latest phase of the Grand Okanagan Resort and Conference Centre. It consists of 70 suites in a low-rise configuration. The one and two-storey suites are complemented by a private health spa on the upper roofdeck.

ALTA DE LISBOA Lisbon, Portugal

Alta de Lisboa is an urban renewal project in Lisbon, Portugal, being developed by SGAL (Sociedade Gestoria da Alta de Lisboa). It is situated on the northern boundary of Lisbon and spreads over 300 hectares.

Alta de Lisboa enjoys the unique opportunity to become the driving force behind the development and growth of Lisbon, in its natural trend from south to north, occupying the last extensive area still undeveloped.

BKDI Architects has worked on two separate developments in Alta de Lisboa. The first site includes residential, commercial and retail development, theatres, public amenities and a 150 room hotel.

The second site features a 200 room hotel along with commercial space.

STONEY NAKODA CASINO Kananaskis, AB

The Stoney Nakoda Resort is a full-service gaming and entertainment complex on Stoney Nakoda First Nation's Land near Morely, Alberta. The first phase of the facility opened in June 2008 and features a 300 slot casino, cultural gallery, restaurants and banquet facilities. BKDI worked in close collaboration with the three participants Stoney First Nations – Bearspaw; Chiniki; and Wesley. To develop a high quality project, sensitive to the environments and incorporating first nations symbology in a contemporary design solution.

THE GRAND OKANAGAN RESORT AND

CONFERENCE CENTRE

Kelowna, BC

The Grand is a 525,000 ft2 resort and conference centre located on Lake Okanagan. The first phase, which opened in 1993, includes a conference centre and trade show facility, 150 hotel rooms, 55 vacation homes and an assortment of restaurants, bars and retail outlets. The conference centre can accommodate up to 1,200 guests. The second phase, completed in 1999, consists of a 100 room hotel tower, parkade, retail space and a 21,000 ft2 casino.

This successful landmark facility is made up of a number of high and low-rise buildings designed to complement the waterfront and the high profile downtown location. BKDI’s work included the design of the entire master plan for the waterfront lands, inclusive of the adjacent highrise condominium portions of the development.

The Grand Okanagan Resort reflects BKDI’s longstanding relationship with Royal Host Corporation.

MARRIOTT’S NEWPORT COAST VILLAS Newport Beach, CA

A luxury resort complex constructed on 70 acres, this development contains 700 timeshare units set in a Tuscan Italian village theme. A plaza featuring fountains and stone paving, along with six-storey theme buildings. A two-level parking structure with guestroom villas above complement the views of the harbour.

The Town Centre creates a distinctly Tuscan ambiance featuring dramatic lighting to accent the theatrical nature of the project. Landscaping appropriate to Northern Italy complements the design. With 39 buildings, three swimming areas, a tennis centre, a luxury spa, a restaurant and retail areas, the entire project will encompass 1,000,000 ft2 upon completion of the final phase.

TRICKLE CREEK RESIDENCE INN BY MARRIOTT

Kimberley, BC

The Kimberley Alpine Resort is an all-season recreational village at the base of the Kimberley Nordic Ski Area. This high-quality building is based on the Rocky Mountain design theme, originally outlined in the Kimberley Mountain Village Design Guidelines. These guidelines indicate general building volumes with highly articulated forms.

The Marriott Residence Inn is the first building to be designed at the village. The 80-room hotel is planned within a 19,300 ft2 Z-shaped ground-floor footprint and a four-storey stepped building above. The ground floor includes reception areas and meeting rooms, retail space and a 5,900 ft2 restaurant/bar with an additional outdoor patio area. A broad covered walkway graced by stone and timber framing, wrap around the building from the main entry to the restaurant patio providing the transition to the pedestrian street.

THREE SISTERS MARRIOTT RESIDENCE INN

Canmore, AB

A destination residence hotel and time-share development, this carefully modulated, serpentine plan building nestles in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, at the edge of Banff National Park. Forest and mountains surround it with breathtaking vistas in every direction. The building sits on an underground parking structure and a deliberately low profile responds to the contours of the surrounding mountain slopes.

Thirty-two time share units and 118 hotel suites are configured within a lodge-like structure featuring steeply pitched roofs with dormers. An outdoor recreational area allows users to enjoy the spectacular view to the west.

ARRIVA Calgary, AB

ArriVa is a mixed-use development that occupies an entire city block of land in Victoria Park and serves as the focal point of the redevelopment of this area of downtown Calgary. The project is comprised of 3 high-rise residential towers—one of 34 storeys and two of 43 storeys. Each tower is constructed of a pale green glass curtain wall. The first tower houses 200 condominium units.

The towers are anchored by a two-storey brick and limestone podium base containing 54,000 ft2 of retail and commercial-use space on the east end and residential townhouse units on the west end.

The centre portion of the 3.1 acre site features the adaptive reuse of two historic structures; a sandstone school, which will be transformed into an office building and a wood bungalow school, which will become a restaurant positioned within a lush urban garden.

LE GERMAIN Calgary, AB

Designed in collaboration with Lemay Michaud Architects, Le Germain Calgary is a mixed use design that enhances the streetscape, and demonstrates the benefits of good urban design.

The distinctive architectural design of Le Germain Calgary incorporates the warmth of wood and the beauty of glass, trademark elements of Groupe Germain Boutique Hotels.

The 150,000 ft2 office component, a sparkling glass curtain wall, connects to the hotel. The two are bridged by 40 penthouse residences, dramatically staggered with large green roof concept terraces that offer breathtaking views of the Calgary skyline. The project also incorporates many green technologies.

The building is a highly innovative addition to Calgary and is destined to become one of the signature landmarks for the city. The project focuses on providing public art as an integral element of the design, making it a leader in the continuing development of Calgary’s dynamic and vibrant cityscape.

11TH & 4TH HIGH-RISE TOWER Calgary, AB

The project is a 45-Storey mixed-use tower. It incorporates the existing mid-block Duff Building, a 25-year old Office Building, into the Project.

The final tower will contain approximately 515,000 ft2 of building area, with 6½ levels of underground parking, ground floor lobbies, retail and restaurant tenancies. There will be 10 storeys of professional office space, Mechanical spaces, a residential amenity space and large exterior amenity gardens. The project will be designed to achieve a LEED® certification.

Floors 16-45 will included 198 residential units, with 14 executive suites. The residential tower is built in a unique elliptical shape, with exterior silicon glazing to achieve a smooth and dynamic landmark appearance. The elliptical shape will maximize views, and will originate in a water feature at ground level. Elegant glass canopies, rich paving palettes, mature boulevard trees and dramatic theatrical lighting will enhance the pedestrian level experience of the final project.

The Montana is a 27-storey, 189 unit residential tower in Calgary’s Beltline district. Located next to the vibrant “Uptown 17th Avenue”, the Montana represents the new direction in height and density for Calgary’s inner city.

Loft units form a classically detailed podium, with ground floor and roof top terraces. The predominant character of the building is distinguished by its skyline. A second empire mansard roof with classical elements.

UNION SQUARE Calgary, AB

Union Square is a mixed-use development, fusing historic preservation and urban design. The two tower development (26-storeys & 28-storeys), situated between Haultain Park and a revived commercial 1st Street, wears two faces. The podium’s commercial face along 1st Street reinforces the historic brick Underwood Building, while the podium facing the Park responds to the historic sandstone Haultain School and park environment.

The towers themselves are contemporary, light, and glassy. New commercial outlets will reinforce the existing streetscape. The new shops will have a similar module to the existing storefronts to maintain a familiar pedestrian scale along 1st Street.

This development is a result of a collaborative planning with the City, Beltline Community, West Victoria BRZ and the Parks Foundation.

This high density residential tower is located in the Inner City Community of Connaught. The Emerald Stone is considered by the community and area Alderman to be a “Landmark Project” reflecting the desire to increase the population of the area and thus reinforce greater vitality and community involvement.

Standing twenty-two storeys high, with 162 residential units commanding fantastic city and mountain views.

Amenities includes a fitness centre, outdoor patio, and a 5000 ft2 restaurant facing onto the 8th Street Commercial corridor. Three levels of secure underground parking is included in the project. Exterior finishes such as red brick, emerald green curtain wall glazing, stainless steel/glass railings, and rich terra cotta stucco, reflect the vernacular of the district while supporting the Landmark Image and direction of the community.

Providing 77 luxury condominium residences, the project consists of a 19-storey tower with one and two suites per floor and two low rise buildings with 19 and 20 suites. Underground parking is provided for 160 cars. Materials used are brick, tyndal stone and precast concrete. The gross floor area is 265,000 ft2.

STELLA – CONDOMINIUMS Calgary, AB

Located in the heart of Calgary’s fast growing design district at 12th

Avenue and 11th Street SW, Stella offers some of the most efficient living space in Calgary.

The first phase is a 21-storey, 162 unit development including six-two-storey townhomes and a seperate guest unit. The building is a reinforced concrete structure, clad with aluminum glazed window walls, and prefabricated exterior insulation and finish system panels.

The balconies feature aluminum rails with pickets or glass infill panels. The highlight of Stella is a beautiful 5,000 ft2 private park, the “Stella Ever Green Space”.

THE RENAISSANCE AT NORTH HILL Calgary, AB

The Renaissance, a 170-unit luxury apartment-style twin tower condominium project, is located on the south side of the North Hill Shopping Centre. The original top level parking lot is the base to a two level secured parking garage, a 31,400 ft2 office component and landscaped terrace gardens.

Residents benefit from spectacular city and mountain views, proximity to parks and the LRT station, as well as direct access to North Hill Mall. The unit sizes range from a 760 ft2 one bedroom unit to a 2,500 ft2 penthouse suite.

THE CALGARY ZOO DESTINATION AFRICA Calgary, AB

Destination Africa opened to the public in January 2003 as the largest and most significant new facility developed at the Calgary Zoo in several decades.

This unique cultural environment includes two pavilions: The TransAlta Rainforest pavilion is a tropical adventure whereas the African Savannah pavilion includes a Safari Lodge, a 350-person capacity banquet facility and an African-themed restaurant. Here, animals are viewed in a natural context; bars are non-existent, as other means of containment and safety are employed, creating a visually seamless interface between visitor and animals.

While the size of the buildings are very large, considerable attention has been given to reducing their relative scale, Massing is broken down into smaller elements so a large building is perceived as a small cluster of buildings.

This office tower is located in the heart of downtown Calgary, within the eastern portion of a full block development.

The one million ft2 building is designed to LEED® Silver requirements, with a unique sculptural appearance. It features an inset column structure providing an unfettered, free glass line.

The project has been carried out in a relationship with the Zeidler Partnership, working together as a fully registered firm – Zeidler BKDI Architects.

The project is currently proceeding through the City review process in anticipation of a development permit.

The subdued modernist aesthetic of this 10 storey building projects a strong image in Calgary’s downtown core. A curtain-wall system of grey and blue tinted glass maximizes light and showcases the views of the downtown skyline to the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west. The street level offers 7,800 ft2 of retail space and there is one level of underground parking. The design minimizes the intrusion of columns, providing optimum flexibility for interior office-planning.

THE HOME DEPOT: NORTH HILL Calgary, AB

BKDI worked with closely with Home Depot, City Planners, the Banff Trail and Capitol Hill Communities to design a mixed development combining retail with residential.

The site incorporates a new urban concept Home Depot store fronting 16th Avenue across from North Hill Shopping Centre. To create a transition into the community, a row of townhouses has been constructed on 17th Avenue in the north west corner of the site.

Hanson Square is a mixed-use retail/commercial building at the focal point intersection of 17th Avenue SW and 8th Street SW. The four storey building, which contains two levels of retail and two levels of professional office space, will be a vibrant addition to this important location. It is composed of brick and glass, and is designed to be fully compatible with the scale and unique character of the community. The building is directly across the street from the historic Devenish Building, a well-known community landmark. It's immediate vicinity contains the upscale Emerald Stone and The Montana condominium towers, as well as the Mount Royal Shops and Restaurants, and Tompkins Park.

ASPEN LANDING SHOPPING CENTRE Calgary, AB

Aspen Landing is a 23-acre “Main Street” pedestrian oriented Village development that incorporates retail, office, restaurant and residential components. It is located between a naturally landscaped hillside and a large 314,000 ft2 water feature.

One and two storey retail spaces are dispersed throughout the centre, all facing the Main Street which opens onto a central pedestrian spine. This spine connects the village core to the residential community to the north. The well-landscaped Central Village Plaza, with distinctive shops and restaurants, help to create an intimate gathering place at the heart of the centre. Unique architecture and public spaces evoke a Village ambiance unlike any other development in the area. The centre contains a major grocery store, drug store, gas bar and a number of independent retail pads.

The integrity of the development is maintained through carefully developed design guidelines that ensure continuity of quality while still encouraging a customized storefront for each tenant.

BKDI was engaged by Corporate Properties of the City of Calgary to define and establish Land Use, Outline Plan, and Architectural Guidelines for the 33-acre site, formerly that of the General Hospital. The intent of the development is to accommodate 1,500 residential units. BKDI worked from the base of an Area Redevelopment Plan to determine: dimensions of proposed city blocks; roadway widths; traffic calming measures; pedestrian systems; building heights and massing; approaches to landscape design; provision of open space public amenities; etc. This is a very comprehensive process of concept design, that includes budget analysis, significant community participation, approvals processing, and political interaction.

The Stoney Nakoda Resort is a full-service gaming and entertainment complex on Stoney Nakoda First Nation's Land near Morely, Alberta. The first phase of the facility opened in June 2008 and features a 300 slot casino, cultural gallery, restaurants and banquet facilities. BKDI worked in close collaboration with the three participants Stoney First Nations – Bearspaw; Chiniki; and Wesley. To develop a high quality project, sensitive to the environments and incorporating first nations symbology in a contemporary design solution.

In 2006 the Penny Lane Entertainment Group again engaged BKDI for the design of their new restaurant, Wild Ginger. Wild Ginger has set a new standard for Asian cuisine in Calgary, offering authentic recipes from the Pacific Rim.

The design is based on a cool, edgy Pan-Asian interior. Wild Ginger caters to a range of customers during the day: the business crowd at lunch; and the night club crowd in the evenings. Having been open for several months now, it is widely seen as one of the finest dining experiences in Calgary.

Casino Nova Scotia is a 140,000 ft2 casino situated on the historic waterfront in Halifax. The new owners, Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, have undertaken the retrofitting of this facility to create a first class entertainment destination. The design is in keeping with their award winning brand and standards in casino design and operation.

In addition to the upgrade of the existing gaming facilities, a new Poker Room and Coffee Shop & Deli were introduced to further enhance and support this revitalization program.
