current solutions – stove pipes

› Single purpose M2M device deployments

› Vertical silo solutions for each single M2M application with a tight end-to-end integration

› Re-development of ”same functionality” in every vertical

› Complexity in solution realization› Lack of cross-industry standards› Add also long life-times of

deployments – life-cycle management is important

Efficient, flexible and open M2M service enablement is critical

Generic SERVICES- COMMON REQUIREMENTS FOR VERTICALS

› Flexible and cost efficient connectivity– Device life-cycle provisioning of connectivity, e.g.

MCIM– Flexibility in tariffs and roaming agrements– Different traffic characteristics and requiments on e.g.

availability

› Hide underlying heterogeneity and complexity– Diversity in different devices– Use of different network protocols and networks

› 2G, 3G, SMS, fixed, IP, SIP, REST, XMPP,...

› Data collection, processing and management– Collection and storage of sensor data for later bulk

retrieval– Historization of data and data mining

› Remote device management– Device diagnostics– Software upgrades

Why horizontal?business processes and re-use

Generic business processes› Similar process needs across verticals› Process decomposition – service enablers

– Communications services– Media and content services– Data capture and processing services– Directory services

› Work-flow orchestration in SOA approach

Re-use for cost efficiency and service innovation› Vertical applications vs. vertical solutions› Move away from tightly integrated solutions

– Multi-purpose device deployments– Applications using multiple devices

› Long-tail support via re-use and cloud› Inherent horizontals vs. “pattern recognition”

Sensor and Actuator services

› Service enablement components to handle services from sensors and actuators

› Modular approach allowing different value offerings

– basic functionality like uniform device access

– extended functionality for sensor-centric data services

– advanced functionality for domain specific information processing

› Service oriented approach based on service orchestration of service components

Business Process Integration- Service orchestration› Vertical applications are envisioned to be compositions of several enablers (not only

M2M or Sensor and Actuator services)› Orchestration of service components according to application skeletons even allowing

ETSI M2M objectives

– to collect and specify M2M requirements from relevant stakeholders;– to develop and maintain an end-to-end overall high level

architecture for M2M;– to identify gaps where existing standards do not fulfil the

requirements and provide specifications and standards to fill these gaps, where existing standards bodies or groups are unable to doso;

– to provide the ETSI main centre of expertise in the area of M2M;– to co-ordinate ETSI’s M2M activity with that of other standardization

groups and fora.

Define an end-to-end horizontal architecture for M2M

Summary and conclusions

› A horizontal approach is needed towards both business and technology– Key interfaces in the architecture to separate communications from services– Hide heterogeneity and complexity from applications – Exposure of the right service enablement tools to application developers

› Re-use is a key feature– Generic business process needs relying on generic components– Service orchestration is the framwork for applications– Allow multiple usages of deployed devices– Allow application to make use of any deployed device

› Mass-market applications require openness– Need for necessary standardization of communications and service enablement– Open but secure market place of sensor data and information and actuator services

The Internet of Things is already Happening
