Introduction

The Tiny Kiwi MeditationCabin competition is calling for

submissions for a small, dedicated meditation space to be built

on the Earth Energies Sanctuary property. Set within a clearing

of local New Zealand bush, the owners are looking to make the

most of the natural beauty and tranquility to allow small groups

of guests to follow guided meditations and relax while

reconnecting with nature.

Earth Energies Sanctuary NZThe Earth Energies Sanctuary is located on a 200-acre farm in

New Zealand, where owners Marie and Duncan have spent many

years developing it into a beautiful and secluded wellness

retreat. This 25-paddock cattle farm is nestled in the

awe-inspiring New Zealand countryside, with only the herds of

cows as neighbours.

Guests at the sanctuary stay in a secluded cabin with 2

bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and stunning 360-degree views of

the surrounding countryside. Designed for seclusion and

relaxation, the cabin allows guests to relax in a bath while gazing

over leafy tree views, or curl up next to the wood fire and

unwind.

The Earth Energies Sanctuary is also a functioning organic farm

which uses seaweed fertilisers and follows the principles of natural

solid biology to create a more balanced ecosystem on the land. In

addition to building their forever home on the property, the couple

spent a year building their Kawakawa product rooms which allow

them to craft native natural remedies.

The property has 2 bee yards which, in addition to providing

beeswax that can be used in products and natural remedies, also

work as part of the natural ecosystem, enhancing clover pollination

in pastures and improving native bush.

As a result of their efforts, the natural ecosystem is thriving, with the

return of native birds, frogs and wildlife. Earth Energies now also run

a small breeding herd of Red Devon breeding cattle that guests will

see during their stay.

Therapies

6

The Earth Energies offers a powerful combination of deep relaxation

therapies designed to bring clients to an alpha or even deeper theta

brainwave state, thus restoring balance essential for optimum

relaxation, creativity, insight, and mindfulness.

The purpose-designed rooms are at the property's summit in a

separate wing of the main entrance. This is a beautiful space in

which to discover the powers of self-healing; here, guests will enter

a tranquil sanctuary where the body and mind are rebalanced.

The Tiny Kiwi MeditationCabin competition is the first

architecture competition to be run in partnership with Earth

Energies New Zealand. Participants are tasked with submitting

designs for a meditation space to be constructed in a bush

clearing on-site. The proposed location sits roughly 300 meters

downhill from the main residence with no established roads,

therefore it can only be accessed by foot.

Four guests and a teacher should be able to fit comfortably in

the space in a seated and possibly layered lying position.

When the space isn’t being used for meditation, it will be used

to process flower essences to be used in their natural products,

and so will need to be able to direct sunlight onto a small altar

for at least 2 or 3 hours of the day. The building must not exceed

30 m2.

As the owners plan to do some of the construction themselves,

practical designs that source local timber and materials would

be considered first as they would be more in line with the

project’s budget.

Building functionality requirements• A tranquil healing space where guests can meditate, protected

from the elements but still connected to nature.

• Able to accommodate meditation sessions and the processing

of natural essences.

• No other amenities are required as the space is a 10-minute

walk from other facilities.

• Electricity will not necessarily be required as meditation

sessions will primarily take place during the day. (For full moon

or evening sessions, some form of solar-powered lighting could

be considered but is not necessary.)

• Natural heating options or some form of fireplace.

• Some form of small altar that is open to the sun for at least 2 or

3 hours of the day for processing flower essences.

The COMPETITION PROGRAMME is flexible, open for modifications

and improved development strategies.

The competition site

The proposed site is located in a sacred spot within a clearing

surrounded by native trees, with sun streaming into the clearing

from the north from around 9:30a.m. until 1:00p.m. It is a quiet

spot which holds a special energy ideally suited for meditation

and will be featured as part of a guided nature walk across the

property.

Since the designs will be considered for construction, projects will

need to offer practical solutions to building within this remote and

natural environment, while also making the most of the

surroundings.

Access to the site is limited to use of a 4x4 utility vehicle and trailer

down a steep grassy incline, so building materials must be able to

be transported by them. Therefore materials such as timber and

glass are suitable, while concrete is not, as a concrete truck would

not have access. Small amounts may be mixed on site in order to

secure foundation posts.

Jury & evaluation process

The competition jury consists of two jury panels:

• Core jury panel

• Consultative jury panel

Full jury panel members list is published at

KiwiCabin.beebreeders.com.

The core and consultative jury panels will be responsible for setting

the criteria that participants need to fulfill, based on the site and

brief, and will evaluate each submission accordingly.

Jury

Participants are advised to research both the working site and

previous similar case studies as part of the design process.

Tiny Kiwi MeditationCabin is a project competition, which

encourages participants to experiment with the limits of

architecture. The jury may choose to reward projects that show a

high degree of creativity, even if they breach any of the rules, as long

as it’s justified.

Tell the worldyour story!

Shortly prior to the results announcement, selected competition

winners and honorable mentions will be contacted and asked to

answer a series of interview questions (in writing) and submit a

video about themselves. These will be published with the

competition results.

There is a tight deadline to announce the winners on time,

therefore interview questions will need to be returned within

2 days, and videos submitted within 2 weeks of being requested.

Hence, we advise participants to consider ideas for their video and

answers to their questions in advance so that they are able to

submit the relevant material on time.

Please note – both the interview and video submission is

OPTIONAL. However, we do recommend that all participants

submit as much material as possible in order to maximise the
