Benjamin Kronenberg, who graduated with a Master of Landscape Architecture in 2012, won the HASSELL Robin Edmond Travelling Scholarship in 2013, which recognises landscape architecture students who show outstanding potential for future contribution to the profession.

Benjamin is the second RMIT landscape architecture alumnus to win the scholarship, following Matthew Hamilton’s success in 2012.

HASSELL is an international design practice with 14 studios in Australia, China, south-east Asia and the United Kingdom. The Robin Edmond Travelling Scholarship helps support universities that train the leading landscape architects of the next generation.

Benjamin’s winning project, ‘Fault Line Living’, focused on the town of Shibitachi, Japan, which was affected by the 2011 tsunami.

The project explored how landscape architecture can contribute to making townships that exist in volatile environmental conditions more resilient.

His research found that existing plans catering for physical loss in earthquake and tsunami regions were not responsive enough to the conditions, relationships and social micro-systems within these landscapes.

Benjamin’s response was to engage a strategy that accepted water inundation and non-solidity of territory around the water edge of tsunami-affected townships.

His work explored new interpretations of ocean-edge relationships, degrees of permanency to infrastructures, urban conditions and land ownership for these regions.

‘The experience of environmental trauma is most often coupled with unexpected loss, and the work I’ve developed may be useful in alleviating this,’ Benjamin said of the project.

‘To have been recognised by such an esteemed scholarship was very exciting.’

His work was chosen by the HASSELL landscape architecture discipline leaders, who were impressed with Benjamin’s depth of thinking, design ability, presentation skills and level of project rigour.

‘Ben delivered an outstanding and engaging body of research. HASSELL was excited to be able to support him in furthering his investigations into this challenging, yet vital aspect of urban, environmental and social resilience’, said the judges.

‘Transient Public Amenity’, an element of Benjamin Kronenberg’s project. The project explored how landscape architecture can contribute to making townships that exist in volatile environmental conditions more resilient.

Interior designers create environments for people. At the heart of this program is the relationship between people and space.

This program promotes interior design as a practice concerned with the spatial and temporal relations between people and the surrounding environment. Different interiors are considered from architectural, retail, exhibition and urban environments; digital and filmic spaces; performance and theatre design; art installations; and more.

You will learn to design through the process of developing your own design response in relation to a range of design briefs from the conceptual to real life situations. You will be provided with technical and communication tools such as Autocad, 3D imaging, hand drawing, film production and model making as well as verbal presentation skills.

This program will challenge your assumptions about interior design and allow you to push current boundaries and engage design as an agent of social and cultural change.

What You Will Study

Year One

You will undertake courses in design and communications, history and theory, and technical studies that introduce you to concepts of interior design.

Years Two and Three

Studies are integrated in design studios and there are electives in technology, communications, specialisations and history/theory.

Each semester, practising professionals and academics offer a selection of studios and specialisations investigating timely and industry-relevant topics.

In second and third year, you will have the opportunity to choose overseas design studios and projects, which will help you develop your design skills at an international level. In third year, you may also choose to study overseas for a semester.

Year Four

You will pursue an individual research proposition and design project based on your accumulated skills and interests in design, theory, technology and communications. Final year work is celebrated through a public exhibition, INDEX.

Specialisations include furniture design, retail design, design for film and TV, design for theatre, exhibition and event design, model making, design publishing, lighting, materials, computer-aided design, projection, digital video and website design.

Industry ConnectionsEach semester, practicing professional designers present studios or specialisations that engage directly with contemporary design projects and/or issues. These projects may involve clients and actual projects where you will develop your design proposals within a scenario-based, simulated design practice environment.

The program has developed strong community and industry relationships, which allow you to be exposed to ‘real life’ projects. Examples include projects with HASSELL, design proposals for the re-design of the Quiksilver Head Quarters in Torquay, and prototyping lighting design in collaboration with Euroluce.

Work placements are available in the third and the final year of the program in a range of organisations and practices which in the past have included National Gallery of Victoria, Assemble Papers, HBA, and MEME.

CareerMany graduates work in interior design and architectural practices where commissions may range from domestic interior, retail and entertainment, to hospitality, corporate office and public building design. These practices range in scale from large corporate offices to teams of two or three.

Design practices are becoming increasingly multidisciplinary, with interior designers, landscape architects, architects, industrial designers and graphic designers collaborating on large-scale projects. Many graduates also establish their own design practices.

Landscape Architecture/Urban Design

Bachelor of Landscape Architectural Design

RMIT Code

Duration and Application

2014 Clearly- in ATAR

BP256 FT3— V T RC

CITY CAMPUSwww.rmit.edu.au/programs/bp256

More than about plants and gardens, landscape architecture is about spaces - natural, urban, private and public. It’s about investigating and proposing better ways of living in a complex, rapidly changing world.

Landscape architecture involves the design of outdoor public and private spaces. This multifaceted discipline blends design, art, science, nature and culture to achieve environmental, socio-cultural and aesthetic outcomes.

Landscape Architecture at RMIT is a world-leading program. In 2012, this program won the International Schools Award at the European Biennial of Landscape Architecture held in Barcelona, taking first place ahead of more than 90 universities involved. The judges declared that the work from RMIT showed our students’ ability to ‘respond to modern challenges in society through critical analysis, innovative design and clever use of space’.

In this program, unlike in many generalist degrees, you will learn from staff who are current practitioners and actively engaged in the field. They will offer you invaluable and specialised knowledge and feedback. Studying in the heart of Melbourne will provide you with a stimulating urban laboratory with countless opportunities for research and design inspiration.

What You Will StudyDesign studio typically makes up half the program each semester and is taught in small groups. You will focus on a particular theme and project each semester. After the first semester, you will select which design studio you wish to follow from approximately 15 on offer, completing one per semester during the course of your studies.

Supporting courses such as technology, communication and history comprise the remainder of your program and provide an understanding of the social and physical contexts of the built environment, as well as teaching you drawing skills.

In the first semester you will complete a structured, foundational design and communications course. Subsequent semesters include four ‘lower pool’ design studios. In the final semester of study, you will move into ‘upper pool’ and complete an upper pool design studio working with Master of Landscape Architecture students. Study in the master degree consists of three additional upper pool design studios, general elective courses and supporting courses such as professional practice.

Lower and upper pool studios are vertically integrated, i.e. grouped with students from various year levels.

Recent design studios include creating an innovative landscape installation for an indoor environment at the Grand Designs Live exhibition. The students received feedback and critiques from Kevin McCloud (‘Grand Designs UK’) and Peter Maddison (‘Grand Designs Australia’). Another design studio asked students to look at the future of farming in Victoria.

Industry ConnectionsAcclaimed and award-winning international and Australian landscape architects, architects, urban designers and experts in related fields are consistently involved with the teaching and research projects undertaken within this program.

Industry-based projects occur throughout the design studios, such as working with Grand Designs Live and the award winning landscape architecture practice Oculus. Many public lectures are also held throughout the year, led by prominent local and international landscape architects and urban designers.

CareerThis program is a stand-alone award that provides employment options for those who seek to work in landscape design or design more generally, in roles that do not require professional registration. Students must complete the Master of Landscape Architecture to become accredited as a landscape architect.

Professional RecognitionAustralian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), landscape architecture’s accrediting body, accepts graduates of the Master of Landscape Architecture by coursework.

Global OpportunitiesThe landscape program offers a huge range of international exchanges and design studios as well as internship opportunities. In recent years students have participated in design studios in Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, France, Spain, and Africa, been on exchange to universities in Berlin, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and the USA, and participated in international internship programs in the USA and the Netherlands.

An internship elective is offered to selected students in both the Bachelor of Design and the Master of Landscape Architecture degrees at a range of firms including the Karres en Brands office in the Netherlands and Stoss LU in Boston. Karres en Brands was the appointed landscape architect firm for Melbourne’s Federation Square.

Entry Requirements

Prerequisites

Units 3 and 4—a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English (EAL).

Selection Tasks

Applicants must complete and submit a pre-selection kit. Short listed applicants will be required to present their folio to a selection panel.

Please refer to the 2015 VTAC Guide for full details on selection tasks.

CITY CAMPUSwww.rmit.edu.au/programs/bh113

This program provides you with a good level of applied knowledge in the broader property profession and enables you to specialise in all the subsets within property and valuation.

The majority of individual and company wealth is made or held in property assets. Having a good understanding of property fundamentals including valuation management, development and property investment markets is critical to the success in the property industry.

You will develop your competency to identify, analyse and resolve problems relating to business in general, and property and valuation in particular. The word ‘property’ is used to link a number of related professions, all of which deal directly with the built environment.

With over four decades of experience in property education has given RMIT an ability to gauge what is occurring within the property professions. The skills that employers and professional bodies seek are well reflected within this program. Staff members are heavily involved with the professional bodies, and regularly liaise with industry and employers.

As a property professional you will understand the features and characteristics of the diverse range of property types and property investment instruments.

What You Will StudyYou will undertake 28 property-related courses within a broad business and management context, offering you a breadth of variety and specialisation of knowledge. You will develop an understanding of, and the ability to identify, analyse and resolve problems relating to all aspects of, the property profession.

Year One

You will be introduced to the property industry, forming the framework for the following three years. You will be provided with an overview of property principles, valuation techniques and property investment strategies. You will also be taught basic construction and project management skills that will aid you in your work and studies.

Year Three

You will build on the material of second year and look in-depth at valuation procedures, asset management and the property investment markets. You will gain deeper knowledge and skills relating to analysing the features and performance of individual properties and the associated marketplace.

Year Four

The final year prepares you to be industry-ready. You’re given an insight into the industry environment and its latest trends. The year culminates with the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge to the following three exciting capstone projects:

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice.

CareerCareers within the property industry are stable, due to the physical nature of the requirement for a place to live and work. Property forms the foundation of the economy and is a necessity for all businesses whether they purchase or lease their place of occupancy, or need it to expand or contract.

The economy may rise or fall but in all economic environments, there is a need for people skilled in managing, protecting and growing the investments of others.
